Sunnys Chinese Toronto Reviews from The Last Year

Everything about this place is so hip and cute! From the panda chopstick holders to the flower shaped soap bottles in the bathrooms, Sunnys Chinese is the epitome of an elegant elevated Chinese restaurant. The menu has lots of modern twists on classic Chinese dishes like mapo tofu & orange chicken and also creative new dishes you've never heard of before. They have dishes inspired by a wide variety of regions in China & also Hawaii, so you get a bit of everything if you order across the menu! The ambiance is so nice inside, with loud music, dim lighting, and pastel colors. Definitely a great place for a date or fun dinner with a group of friends! Everything we ordered was super flavorful and delicious. The orange chicken was nicely crispy and juicy, with a bright citrusy kick from the orange slices. I also loved the silver needle noodles! Super savory with mushrooms and big chunks of egg. The gai lan dish was also a standout -- so garlicky and also had taiwanese sausage. The soft tofu was also yummy and the crispy youtiao bits on top were so fun. Heritage pork chop was very cumin forward but super tender and not dry at all. But whatever you get for food, you absolutely must get the blackbird HK french toast for dessert!!! It's incredible and one of my favorite desserts I've ever eaten to date. It's the perfect combination of sweet, salty, and decadent. Their soy milk soft serve with soy sauce caramel was also so yummy too -- very light and refreshing, and paired really well with the richer french toast. Service here is amazing; everyone was super friendly, food came out quite fast, and we were taken care of the whole night!

This was the most difficult place to find (you have to walk into a mall-like building (on the door there is a sign that says Sunny's Chinese but it's small so you have to be looking for it. This isn't a knock on the place though, half the fun was finding it!! It was also much smaller than I expected on the inside and kind of had old school diner vibes. If my group had been on board, I would have tried the tasting menu because I'm a sucker for having someone else do the work of picking my meals but alas we went a la carte. So what did we try: XXX TÈ LÀ SPICY JERKY - Great flavor but very spicy HUSBAND + WIFE BEEF - I am usually turned off by tripe, but the way they sliced and seasoned this was delicious and unique so it was worth the try SPECKLE PARK HANGER STEAK - The group favorite STIR FRIED ASPARAGUS - the bean curd absolutely made this dish SILVER NEEDLE NOODLE - My favorite - the flavors were PERFECT TYPHOON SHELTER SQUID - like fancy calamari - this was our waitresses recommended dish and it was good but not great. Only regret was not getting the French toast at the end!! would go back if I was in the Toronto area again.
Definitely worth a visit
Unique and delicious. Definitely worth a visit. Diner meets speakeasy featuring shareable plates from various regions of China. You definitely will not stumble upon this gem, tucked away down an unassuming hallway amidst a variety of shops in Kensington Market. I’d highly recommend the bbq eggplant and sliver needle noodles, with French toast for dessert. Also a great spot for cocktails.
Not your parent's Chinese eatery.
Youthful energy. A cocktail, beer, wine, and even sake list at the ready to quench the fiery heat, mala numbness from shared plates of in your face flavorful food. The "Husband and Wife Beef", a great way to start. A meat salad. Well braised shank, tendon and tripe brought together cold, mixed with cilantro, doused in very fragrant chili oil. The initial taste is of natural chili sweetness that turns fiery as it heats up in your mouth. Oddly refreshing. The "XXX Te La Spicy Jerky", an equally good drinking starter. Essentially garlic forward beef jerky dusted with Sichuan peppercorn powder. Almost floral aroma that heightens sweet beefy flavors followed by a mala kick. It pairs surprisingly well with fruit forward wine. The must order hot dish, the "Silver Needle Noodle". A chewy, thick, hand formed noodle wok fried with broccolini, mushroom and eggs with what taste like multiple kinds of soy sauce based on the sweet / salty / umami complexity. The twice cooked tan jo farms pork blows the mind with super charged umami from the fermented chili (doubanjiang and fermented black bean. Coincidently the menu gives the region of China where each dish draws inspiration. One dish, "orange chicken" claims to be from Hawaii. That said, the cook and quality of Sunny's orange chicken is too good to be like any Panda orange chicken, just saying. Several other dishes sampled, and while not everything is to everyone's liking and the cooking / seasoning is not always authentic, there is no denying the fun factor. Very friendly service. Deserving of its Bib Gourmand status from the Michelin Guide.
Sunny's is one of a kind and has quickly become a favourite
Sunny's is one of a kind and has quickly become a favourite for those looking for elevated, yet delicious Chinese food. With the majority of the menu set up for sharing, make sure to come with a large group so you can sample a variety of their dishes. The garlicky green beans and orange chicken are two of my favourites!
Sunny's hits.
And it's cool because it's tucked away in Kensington Market. I threw off my boyfriend when I took him here, because he thought we were going into some back alley, but once you walk through that small indoor mall and find the place, it's a beautiful sight. We went in for this dinner and ate alot. Had the chrysanthemum and spinach (delicious bite), Dan Dan noodles (yum), silver needle noodle (love the texture), sticky ribs (delicious) and the orange chicken (classic). Also had the dessert which is bombbbb GO GO GO
Sunny's to the restaurant scene is what a speakeasy is to
Sunny's to the restaurant scene is what a speakeasy is to the bar scene. Hidden in an unassuming spot, lies a windowless, dungeon of good food, drinks, and vibes. The service was efficient, prompt and our server kept checking up on us. Might have felt a little rushed at times. I shared my meal with my mom this past weekend at Sunny's. We ordered ourselves a drink each - I went for a basic Chardonnay, while my mom ordered a pink-coloured Gin Cocktail which seemed to have graced every other table at the restaurant. Indeed a popular pick! For food, we shared the following: - Silver Needle Noodle (5/5) - loved the subtlety of this. Other reviews mentioned it being overly salted but I had no such experience (and I can be sensitive to salt so this was a successful shot in the dark). Loved the addition of tofu, and the sweetness of the onions that jazzed up this dish - Pork Chop (4/5) - great flavor. On the drier side - just what we wanted to pair with the noodles. The flavors were a contrast to the above order, making it perfect to go with the drinks as well. Docking a point only because I would have preferred lesser fat on the Pork Chop - main reason behind avoiding the Twice Cooked Pork item on the menu, that was made with pork belly. - French Toast (5/5) - One word, interesting! In between each of the three slices of bread laid this sweet yet savory sesame paste/butter, and drizzled on top was sweet Oolong condensed milk, and a dollop of butter. This was an indulgent order and just perfect to share amongst the two of us, since we had only ordered two other items before, instead of 3-4, that our server initially recommended to be the trend. Overall, enjoyable experience and happy to tick this off my Bucket List! Could see myself revisiting!
I really enjoyed the food -- wasn't completely blown away
I really enjoyed the food -- wasn't completely blown away -- but I'm giving Sunny's a perfect score anyway because the super cool, hidden-away space turns your dinner into a unique and fun experience. This used to be one of the best speakeasy cocktail bars in Toronto -- Cold Tea -- so well hidden, known only by those "in the know." It's located down a hallway in a non-descript mini mall in Kensington. Look for the door with the light. It seems the location has confused too many Sunny's customers, to the point that they posted a makeshift cardboard SUNNY'S sign on the front door to help lost and bewildered diners find their way to this Michelin starred restaurant. We opted to sit at the "kitchen counter," although the counter is high and I'm short, so my actual view of the chefs at work was minimal. Still, I liked sitting there. The service was top notch. Cocktails were okay. Food-wise, we didn't order anything too adventurous for our first go: Silver Needle Noodle -- definitely recommended. The chewy bouncy texture was amazing. Chiu Chow Long Beans -- very nice, nothing too memorable Orange Chicken -- a very tasty version of a standard Chinese dish: breaded and crunchy deep fried chicken morsels in a sweet sauce with green peppers and onions Charcoal Grilled Hanger Steak -- cooked to perfection and a nice portion, but the spicing was different than what we're used to when it comes to steak; this seemed heavy on paprika and low on salt. It was good though. Daily Soft Serve -- divine!! A tall swirl of beautiful soft serve; the special was apple with a hint of warming spice and chili oil. So good.

Sunnys Chinese is a hidden spot for Asian inspired sharable snacks and cocktail drinks! The vibe was like an old gwei lo diner with wooden and mint green decor. We absolutely loved the panda chopsticks holders, super cute! Price is $$$$ - we enjoyed the Sticky Beef Ribs ($40 for 6-7 pieces). I was not a fan of the Silver Needle Noodle 銀針粉 ($19) because this is my childhood's FAVOURITE dish, and I had really high expectations (My grandma makes a really good one, sorry!) I love that there is a section on the menu called 'NOT TOO SWEET' lol. There is a Yuenyeung Soft Serve, and Blackbird HK French Toast with black sesame jam, oolong condensed milk, and that melted butter!! Overall, cute date spot some late night snacks and drinks ^^

Loud. Tables too long for staff to serve and clean. Food was good but overpriced. Seems a bit discombobulated. Get what they're going for. Only wish it was more harmonious. But I admire the incredible effort and uniqueness.
I was disappointed as the dishes were very salty.
We ordered twelve dishes that evening with friends. Overall I'm glad that we tried it but I don't think we'll be back.
Good quality dishes with great flavour.
A good version of Americanized Chinese food. A good place to try Chinese food if you are new to the cuisine. This restaurant is heavily overpriced compared to authentic Chinese restaurants that have high quality food and much lower prices.

The site doesn't have resources to properly execute a reservation transfer. Some places allow it however the best bet is to open a chat on the listing from the seller and communicate there

Transferring reservations is not supported in AT. Why not just use the name in the AT screenshot?
