10/10! Don't walk, RUN here for the chicken teriyaki (and probably the only fork in Kyoto)!
This. Place. Was. INCREDIBLE! We initially stopped in on a whim but the restaurant was booked solid, so we made a reservation for the next evening - definitely make a reservation! We arrived and had the place to ourselves for about a half hour before the crowd arrived. My husband was so excited to see a fork in the "tool" basket, so if you're like him and just want to inhale a meal once during your visit to Japan, this is your place (but trust me, you'll want to savor your entire meal)! 😂 For appetizers we shared the fried taro and a Caesar salad. Both were very tasty and the Caesar didn't taste like anchovies so I enjoyed it. I heard rave reviews about the chicken teriyaki and it ABSOLUTELY lived up to the hype. The dish came with rice and a potato "hash" if you will (not quite potato salad but not fingerling potatoes either). If I could've licked my plate clean I would have, but the owner swipes the edge of the plate with spicy Japanese mustard and that would've been all bad for me! Even though our teriyaki plates were enough, we wanted to try the wagyu. We ordered a 100g wagyu to share and it was cooked and seasoned to perfection. It also came with rice and potatoes and we left nothing on that plate either. The young staff were SUPER friendly and accommodating, and they both spoke very good English which was awesome. Prior to ordering they'll ask you about allergies, but we were all set on that front. I wish we were in Kyoto longer because we would DEFINITELY go back. This was my favorite meal of our trip - don't walk, RUN to have a meal here. I wish I had gotten the owner's name, but arigatougozaimasu for a FANTASTIC meal Sugarhill!

We really enjoyed our meals here - we came twice as it was so good, and had gluten free options which we needed. The service was great and d friendly staff, amazing food, particularly the wagyu beef and chicken teriyaki - gluten free option chicken teriyaki and standard chicken teriyaki.
Be the first to Replygreat food + service + gf options
great service great food also very good gluten free options overall really nice restaurant would definitely recommend
Be the first to ReplyModern cuisine with great taste! Very pleasant waitress and speaking very good English! Fast, good flavors
We recommend BANZAI Appetizers to share! The Deep fried chicken salad is very good and the chicken terriaki is excellent! Let yourself be tempted by the very generous vanilla ice cream!
Be the first to ReplyA lovely little place with great food!
We ordered a few sharing starters, yuzu wine, some plum wine, sashimi selection for me and teriyaki chicken for my husband. The owner and his team were so friendly, we received the warmest of welcomes and all of the food was fresh and delicious. It was a really cool place, really popular with travellers and it was mostly a tourist crowd but having eaten in a few other places in Kyoto before this, the quality was still excellent.

Fantastic little find. Great food and great service. Would highly recommend and visit again. Menus were also available in English
Be the first to ReplyExcellent Japanese fusion
Delicious food, good portions and friendly staff. Would definitely go again. Tried Japanese chicken curry, chicken teriyaki and sashimi. Staff were very friendly and spoke great English. Is a diamond in the rough - quiet, unassuming store front, but with cosy interior and great food.
Be the first to ReplySweet SugarHill Kyoto
From the moment we stepped in the team were friendly and accommodating - “no reservation, let’s see what we can do” … so refreshing where everywhere else wants you to line up in the cold. Menu had Gluten free options, food was incredible, and all at a very reasonable price - so much better than the three previous much more expensive nights out. The same was being echoed by others sitting around us. Looking for a quality meal in a casual surrounding then hunt these guys out.

Loved the service and the food. Their crème brûlée was really good. The owner and the server were the nicest people we had ever met from a restaurant since our stay.
Be the first to ReplyDelightful Dining at Sugarhill Kyoto: A Haven for Gluten-Free Japanese Cuisine
Sugarhill Kyoto stands out as a gem in Kyoto’s culinary landscape. From the moment I stepped in, the warmth and friendliness of the staff made a lasting impression. They were not only attentive but also incredibly knowledgeable about dietary requirements, which was a relief for someone needing gluten-free options. The menu was a delightful surprise, offering a wide range of gluten-free dishes without compromising on traditional flavors. The eel was cooked to perfection, tender and flavorful, melting in my mouth with each bite. The chicken was equally impressive, juicy and seasoned just right. But the real star of the meal was the sashimi – fresh, succulent, and expertly prepared, it was a true taste of Japan. What made Sugarhill Kyoto truly special was its ability to cater to specific dietary needs without sacrificing the essence of traditional Japanese cuisine. This thoughtful approach, combined with the exceptional service and atmosphere, made my dining experience memorable. Sadly, my itinerary doesn’t allow for another visit this trip, but Sugarhill Kyoto is at the top of my list for my next journey to Kyoto. It’s a must-visit for anyone seeking a delightful and inclusive dining experience in this beautiful city.

Be the first to ReplyBest meal i had while in Japan.
I am not a seafood eater so this menu appealed to me. It was the best meal i had in Japan. We had a group do we teied many things. Beef and pork curry, obanzi platter and my main dish was waygu beef which was the most flavorful beef I had. This is a hole in the wall place and the staff was great.

Fast and friendly service together with delicious food that is reasonably priced, winning in every category. Absolutely nothing to criticise, 10/10
Be the first to ReplyAmazing gluten free food
So nice to get to a restaurant and have decisions on what to order so there are so many gluten free options. Everything we ordered was amazing and the service was 10/10. Thank you so much.
Be the first to ReplyFlavour, Flavour, Flavour!!!
Incredible flavours flowed through every dish we had. The appetisers were really interesting and unusual. We took a few wild guesses and we guessed well - kingfish, yams, fried potato, and eggplant. Main course - again non- stop flavour assault. Teriyaki chicken, wagyu beef with array of daises and seasonings on the side. We sat and watched the owner chef prepare it in front of us whilst the friendly wait staff engaged us in witty conversation. Great value for money and a wonderful night out.

Be the first to ReplyFriendly, welcoming place
Similar to other review I was made to feel very welcome as a solo, international traveler. On this particular evening (cold, tired, hungry) it was just what I was after. Food was good too.
Be the first to ReplyBest chicken katsu ever!!!
Just had the chicken katsu and another chicken dish and it was outstanding - couldn't recommend this place more! They were super busy and helped me out of a bind by letting me get take out - I wish I could have stayed to eat in the restaurant though - the atmosphere was great, the staff charming and kind and it was the best katsu I have ever had!!! Great spot I highly recommend and the photo says it all!! ❤️❤️❤️
Be the first to ReplyBest meal in Japan!
Wonderful food, nice staff! So helpful for us American tourists that they speak English and have an English menu, and take credit cards. We had fried taro appetizer, Wagyu beef salad, chicken teriyaki, lemon sorbet and Catalana brulee for dessert. Also got info on sites to see here in Kyoto. Arigato for the oishii meal! 😋
Be the first to ReplyGreat spot for delicious fusion food
We walked by just in time to see the sundae being served and made a reservation for later that week. Fantastic meal! We had the spaghetti bolognese and chicken teriyaki, which was served with a surprise pumpkin croquette. Nice local beer selection. Wait staff was friendly and welcoming to us as foreigners. And the desserts… delicious.
Be the first to ReplyOishii! Go and enjoy
I happened upon this place yesterday, and I'm so glad I did. The owner-chef (working by himself when I stopped in) is very friendly and explains some of the subtle Kyoto touches to his excellent fusion cooking. I had the Obanzai (おばんざい), which came with six different delicious small dishes, including amazing squash karage and a tender beef stew. And with a plentiful serving of cold sake - oishii! I wanted to try the fried chicken as well - and I'm so glad I did: crisp and flavorful, with a tasty side salad with sesame dressing and some of the best potato salad I've ever tasted. I'll be back.
Be the first to ReplyVery friendly owner/chef, great food
Had dinner here on a grey Tuesday night in Spring. Had the teriyaki chicken and a glass of wine - the host/owner/chef/waiter was absolutely lovely, lots of great choices on the menu, wine was nice, and the food was delicious. Really fresh and tasty. Would definitely come back - I was sad that I was alone and couldn't justify ordering more food!
Be the first to ReplyA Snowy New Years Eve in Kyoto
We dined here on New Years Eve 2021 and while it was snowy outside, it was warm and cozy in Sugarhill. Karage Taro and Sashimi were delicious and the drink selection is broad, from tap and craft beer to Kara Kuchi sake and single malt whisky. Sugarhill is a great place to chill out and have a casual dining experience and/or a few drinks. The chef is lovely and very accommodating, staff are attentive and easy to talk English to. The menus are in Japanese and English and the food will give you Botha taste of Japan or Europe. I recommend the carbonara with house cured pancetta!

Amazing food, very friendly chef/owner! I’ve lived in Japan nearly a year and this has been my best meal out to date! I will visit here every time I’m in Kyoto!
