Steve & Cookie's By the Bay Margate City Reviews
Just a great place to eat well and be treated nicely.
No pressure summer love! Good wine special too ;)
Excellent food and drinks.
We had the ugly tomato salad and halibut, and it was exceptional. Service and ambience is really good.
Great food in painfully noisy restaurant
This lively restaurant has great food but is super noisy. The uggly tomato salad is a favorite along with the blueberry pie and crab cakes. They used to have a cold seafood platter but it is a la carte now. Avoid the fried shrimp - overcooked and tough. Great cocktails!
Always a must do, but plan ahead.
Very popular, great food, great service. It's the place on the shore. So much better than the Crab Trap.
Have eaten at Steve's and cookies many times.
Excellent food. Cookie is a doll. Tonight for the first time ever we had neglectful service. Waited and waited for server. No pepper or salt offered for salad, apps or dinner. No drink refills offered. Irish coffee with no whipped cream, said he'd come back with it but did not. Not very busy, Just too busy chatting to pay attention to us. Embarrassing as we had guests with us from out of town. Food was excellent as always.
A Margate staple and a terrific experience.
The service and staff were great and the quality of the food outstanding!! I'll be back.
Gem in Margate
Large and extremely busy place that lived up to its reputation. Best Manhattan clam chowder I've ever had, likewise the signature blueberry pie. Everything else shared with several couples was very good or better. A little chaotic getting to our table (and this was on the late side on a Tuesday night! After checking in, we went to order a drink at one of the several bars only to be sternly told by a hostess that the bar seats were reserved! She suggested we wait outside (thankfully it was a cool evening but I would have been pretty angry if was a hot and humid night). Doesn't detract too much from the great food.
Expensive, but worth what you pay for.
Got the Lobster Mac and Cheese as an appetizer, which had insane flavor and remains some of the best Mac and cheese I've ever had (with or without lobster). For dinner, I got the halibut special and my girlfriend got the filet mignon with crab imperial. My dish was definitely a lighter meal, but tasted great. As for the filet dish, we ordered it medium rare. It did come out more like medium, but that was quickly glanced over with how great it was. It truly was the first time I've tried a steak that melts in your mouth. The crab on top really sealed the deal. It also comes with mashed potatoes, which were the best I've ever had. For dessert, we got the crème brûlée, which was a solid finish to the night. If you are going to get alcohol, we wish we knew earlier that the dessert menu also offered some drinks that are more sweet and dessert-like I suppose, so make sure to ask if you like those! We got the lavender lemon-drop martini, which to us wasn't anything special. Service was professional, but that's to be expected since it is a more classy restaurant. Definitely a good spot for an anniversary or other special occasion. They don't typically do change since most people don't pay in cash, so be aware of that before going.

Delectable specials and excellent wine selection-- I have frequented this establishment countless times during off season when the shoobies have fled! However my girlfriends and I decided to go for a Saturday night cocktail hour this past weekend and were able to get a nice table with great service on a busy summer night. The salad variety is truly extensive and impressive. The nightly specials, among a delicious grilled halibut and sesame ginger salmon dish, included a negro rosado Spanish rosé that was a phenomenal pairing with each refreshing seafood entree.
Everytime I go, the martinis are unbelievable and the food
Everytime I go, the martinis are unbelievable and the food is somehow even better than that. Highly recommend for a celebration dinner or even just a friendly happy hour in the oyster bar!
Fun time, good dinner and good vibe.
Waitress and bus boy were absolutely fabulous. They make sure you felt special and enjoyed your dining experience.
Food is fresh and delicious.
Best bartenders and drinks. Did I forget desserts? Six stars!!
Ghost crab(meat)
Have been coming here for many years and has always been terrific. I ordered the pasta with crabmeat and tomatoes. Very disappointing-should have been called tomatoes with pasta and a touch of crab. My bowl was covered in tomatoes. I searched under the pasta for the crabmeat- only a little and for $39 there should have been much more. My friends’ meals, Hal it special and seafood pan roast was great. Yummy brussel sprout appetizer. Dessert, apple crisp with ice cream was ok. Our server was very good.
Amazing dining experience! From start to finish great
Amazing dining experience! From start to finish great service and the food was excellent! The bone in veal milanese was delicious! Loved the lemon vinaigrette cascading over the arugula salad. My guy had the double cut stuffed pork chop. The fontina, bacon and apple stuffing was so flavorful. It was served over mashed sweet potatoes which were like dessert! Both dishes had a wonderful presentation and tasted phenomenal! We sat at a high top in the bar area and the service was spectacular! Loved the vibe. Never did I have to ask our waitress for anything. The entire wait staff were very attentive. This was our first time having dinner here. We usually have happy hour which is also very good. The only negative would be the banana cream pie. The flavor was good, not too sweet, but the bananas were layered on the crust then the custard. It would have held together better if the custard was on top of crust. The crust fell apart with each bite. The crust is the best part. lol. Easy fix. Other than that we had an outstanding dining experience and can't wait to return.
One of the top meals in my life.
All that you hear is true. Top notch ingredients, skillfully prepared, served professionally. My only hitch was the servers' hair - long and unwrapped, untied, unscarfed or hatted. Here's some science: "On average, the average male loses approximately 50 to 100 hairs per day. This amount of hair loss is considered within the normal range and is part of the natural hair growth cycle1. Hair shedding is a natural process, and it occurs as part of the body's renewal cycle." What are the chances of a hair or two finding its way to your palate? I'd say pretty good!
100% perfecto in every way! Home away from home.
.. service is beyond compare! Food is clean and fresh with impeccable presentation.
We've been coming to Steve & Cookie's for over 25 years.
It had been a while since my last visit, and unfortunately it's not anywhere as good as it used to be. It certainly is busy - very noisy! -- and hopefully many people are still pleased with their experience. However, we felt the food and the service both left something to be desired. Re: the food, they no longer provide complimentary bread - you have to pay for it, and it's not the variety it used to be. The bouillabaisse was salty, and the halibut/shrimp special had 1 shrimp on it. Compared to some of the other restaurants on the scene now, this just isn't worth $40-$50/entrée. Re: the service, the team supporting us (party of 6) did not serve appetizers and entrees to the right members of our party - for both courses, they served incorrectly and we needed to switch around. It also took 3 asks to get more water. Small things, but it's an expensive place and you can't help but expect smooth service. This used to be a special occasion go-to for me, but I don't feel that way anymore. :-(
Great ambience inside the restaurant and amazing drinks.
The brussel sprouts were to die for, and I don't even like them. Service was excellent and prompt. I will definitely be returning.
service was bad.
forgot about my drink order and completely ignored me when i asked again. the hostess came to my table and told my family of 15 to stop talking. you do not understand. we haven't socialized in YEARS as a family and we get told we can't talk? seriousl?
Great food and nice dining experience
Visited here in the Summer. Really lovely place and good service. Had the lamb lollichops and bouillabaisse with lobster tail. All very nice. Will definitely be back next Summer.

I've never had a bad experience at Steve and Cookies! The Crab Imperial is just soooo good.

absolutely fabulous! Your favorite is about to make a New appearance; the chefs are understated & elegant here & the desert, the crunch is worth saving a reasonable drop of room, from the beginning which is ridiculous !
Amazing, high quality food.
The service is always fantastic. My husband and I go here on our anniversary every year. We've never had a poor experience or bad food. Obviously the food is pricey, but you're paying for quality.

By far the best restaurant and bar! Excellent service from bartenders, hostess and waitress. All of our food and drinks were delicious!! Highly recommend!! A cozy latex back atmosphere
TERRIBLE Experience
My sister and my husband and her husband went to Steve and cookies on Sunday November 12 th for dinner first of all they made all of us stand outside till 5 because they didn’t open till then it was 4:45 and cold outside. Then during our dinner my husband started choking on something and it was pretty bad we went through at least 12 napkins during his choking. No one in the place of business came over to see if he was alright not one our server not the hostess no one! The only people that acknowledged him choking were a couple at a table and by the way my brother in law bought their dinner they were so nice. He was choking for quite a while. I think this is disgraceful that not one employee there came over to see if he was ok .we won’t be going there again and I will tell people about this experience. AWEFUL customer service.
A BIT ABOVE AVEEAGE
Gave Steve and Cookie's a 3 out of 5 because we had high expectations based on the reviews and the difficulty securing a reservation . The dining room feels a bit dated , the specialty cocktails and service were excellent , the wine by bottle a bit pricey . We started with the lobster Mac and cheese and the ugly tomato salad , both apps very good , for entrees we had the halibut which was good and the stuffed pork chop which was dry and a stretch to say it was stuffed , we were looking forward to the blueberry pie for dessert but they had stopped serving that in the fall . We wouldn't travel just to eat here but if we were in the area and could get in , we would return .
Wonderful night out in Margate
Excellent all around experience! Atmosphere, service and food were all top notch. Our table had 4 different entrees and everyone raved about their meal. Will definitely come back next time visiting the Jersey shore.
Disappointed
Steve and cookies was always our go to for a fabulous meal and amazing service. Our dining experience tonight was terrible. Our waiter was completely preoccupied with other tables. I was brought he wrong meal which honestly is not a big deal but the waiter barely acknowledged the mistake. When the halibut came out it was completely dried out. Forgot my wine after I sat and watched my husband eat his meal. Then I am almost done my meal and he asks if we need pepper😬. All of the mishaps are not worth the $200 we paid for dinner… for 2 people. Back in the day Steve and cookies was not comparable to any restaurant down the shore but things have definitely changed.. not for the better.
Disappointed
We have always enjoyed dinner at the bar with music …we’re so disappointed with the bartenders… absolutely no personality and almost rude… cookie should be ashamed as she has always made your experience special…
Frustrating and inefficient reservation system
For 20 years my family and I have dined at S&C as the culmination of our family vacation. This will be the first year that we will not be customers. Your reservation system is inefficient and frustrating. I followed all the rules: reserved online 30 days prior to desired dining date at the 9PM time slot( only time available). I left credit card info agreeing to your cancellation policy. I then realized that I needed to make a change in the reservation which I could not do online. No one answers the phone and no one returns phone calls. I give up. You have lost our business. We will dine elsewhere.
Decided to come try Steve & Cookies based on the reviews
Decided to come try Steve & Cookies based on the reviews prior, I was in the ocean city area for the night. Unable to get a reservation, we walked in around 6pm Saturday (off season for the shore) and were luckily able to grab seats at one of the bars! Ambiance was great, the restaurant really feels upscale. Our bar tenders were absolutely fabulous and truly made our dining experience! I had one of the best espresso martinis. The food was okay, and felt pricey for what it was. We started with the tuna sushi, it was fried and felt very diy I wouldn't get again. Burrata was great with the peppers, but lacking a balsamic/evoo topping. The breaded clams were delicious, definitely recommend. Ended up ordering the lobster Mac for an entree and it was disappointing, lobster was very much over cooked and Mac and cheese was very oily. Show stopper was our last minute addition, the brussel sprouts, they were amazing. Would love to come back to this place just to sit at the bar and try some other menu items.

In my 55 years, I can count on one finger the number of times I've been told 'a six top is waiting for your table'. That one time was last night, at our second visit to Steve & Cookies. We were so impressed by this popular eatery, that we brought friends from North Jersey, to celebrate a 50th birthday. We were on time for our reservation and less that two hours into our meal, when the young waiter gave us this nudge. There was no line at the host stand, so this party of six was enjoying a drink at the bar. This comment, and the two undercooked salmon entrees we sent back, have taken some of the sheen from my original review. I was actively seeking the owner, to communicate this to her, but I couldn't find her. Still a great restaurant, but obviously too busy.
Haven't been in awhile.
Saw Cookie walking around talking to patrons. Very cool My family sat in dining room. The chairs were horribly uncomfortable. The bar area much more my speed with warm atmosphere & high tops Server Joanne was super nice! She had a large table next to us (bunch of asshats) felt bad. Lobster Mac n cheese was ehBeet salad, my personal favorite My daughter wasn't thrilled with filet. For $48 All in all, I'll be back-but won't sit in large dining room.
10/10 steak, great service & overall classy environment.
I would 100% recommend trying this restaurant if you're visiting the shore.

In my 55 years, I've been out to dinner hundreds of times, and I can count on one hand the number of times the owner of a restaurant approached me and asked how I was enjoying my meal. Recently, my wife and I finally secured our first reservation at Steve & Cookie's, and we responded with an answer I'm sure she's used to hearing: 'everything is excellent!' Food. Drinks. Service. Atmosphere. Steve & Cookie's is fancy, without being formal. There is an energy to the dining room, where everyone knows there is something special going on. Now we know why this is one of the hardest reservations in South Jersey. We hope to get another one soon.
Always a great meal and great service.
very good at accommodating my food allergies (gluten/dairy)!
This is a very, very good restaurant.
The food is always fantastic and nicely prepared. It's a little pricey, but what the heck it is Margate..
Great evening with friends on New Year's EveMiss the dinner
Great evening with friends on New Year's EveMiss the dinner they use to do with open bar, appetizers etc. Limited seating. Price was worth the affair
Sadly gone downhill
We waited over hour and a half for our food Cocktails came right away but we had way too long of a wait after that We asked for bread and we’re charged $6 for a few slices This seems out of line when average entrees are $40 Having the cocktail on empty stomach then waiting hour and a half for food left me with terrible headache Hope they get it together…food was good but not worth that long of a wait
Food and service were amazing! Great atmosphere.
Live music. But it comes with a pretty hefty price tag.

The hype about this place is a bit over the top, nevertheless, it is very good here. Steve and Cookie's is LOUD. A quick look around the place, you'll notice every surface is covered in padding meant to absorb the sound, and yet, alas, it's like being at a rock concert.I have to mention, charging for bread is an insult to the guests, it reeks of greed. Menu is mostly fish, but the NY Strip Steak is delicious. Wish they had more meat & chicken options. The key lime pie dessert with the oyster cracker crust was a must try. The oyster crackers really make a huge difference, fantastic.
