St. JOHN Restaurant London Reviews from The Last Year
All good. Spectacular puds.
We went, in truth, because we thought we ought to, living nearby. Turned out that St John was fantastic - good ambience, unpretentious, lovely service, great food. I'd guess that most diners don't get to the puds, but let me tell you: they are wonderful - cherry trifle and apricot pavlova for us. I'm not sure puddings get much better than those.
A must visit, every time we are back in London
This is a classic go to, every time we are in London. The meaning of good quality food. The Bine Marrow is simple heaven. Feels like home every time.
My favourite spot
Always the highlight of trips to London Impeccable, knowledgeable staff The menu and wine are well thought out and the delivery of all the dishes was perfect
All around great food experience with high quality
All around great food experience with high quality ingredients! Highly recommend the chicken liver toast to start! Dishes were full of so much flavor! I got the monkfish and my husband got the park beef, it was extremely tender. Menu does change daily though. Our server was helpful and walked us through the menu and his favorites. Reservations are a must! With seats still available guests walking in were turned away. I believe they run out of food and only have so much to serve each day. In other words, ingredients are fresh!! You won't be disappointed with any of the dishes you can't go wrong, it's truly an explosion of great flavors in your mouth with each bite!
A must visit in london
A must visit when you are in London. Tables get booked up for weeks so i recommend going for weekdays. I was really looking forward to the bone marrow dish but all the dishes on the menu were superb and in fact i enjoyed other dishes such as the liver way more(coz you cant get them anywhere else) also i strongly suggest you leave room for Madeleine(get 12 as they disappear in your mouth!)
Nice Lunch
I have heard so many good reviews about St Johns but it is one of those restaurants that you can't really dine alone. The only item I have tried from them was their doughnut from the Bakery however recently I got hyped on Calves liver because it was done right so found out that St Johns had it too hence went there to have a nosy at the menu. It turns out they also have a Wine bar which is casual featuring smaller plates tapas style which was perfect for me. They also had Ox liver which made my day so I dined there. As well as that, I had the Nettle and Ham soup and the Roasted Bone marrow with parsley Salad. Roast Bone marrow and parsley salad. I ordered this by impulse and definitely do not regret it but looking around everyone else's bones were taller and bigger than mine! Anyway, it was probably for my own good as I wasn't sharing especially all that cholesterol. It is really good how they just baked it like that and did not cut the bone horizontally as you lose a lot of the good stuff like that. This was the best bone marrow experience I have ever had because it was not ruined by garlic or herbs. The parsley salad was a match made in heaven as it was literally soaked in lemon juice which makes it appetizing on the sourdough with the marrow and its grassiness. It would have been nice if the toast was not so burnt because the edges were not edible. Ox Liver, Chicory and Anchovy. After tasting some amazing Calves liver that was done right, I have been trying to go somewhere that also delivers. Most restaurants that I wanted to go mainly do liver and onions or bacons using Calves Liver or Ox. I stumbled upon St Johns which serves this and found out that it was on the daily specials menu so how could I not try. I had the Ox Liver, Chicory and Anchovy which was from the wine bar. It really made my day as it was something different from liver and onions yet it was so tasty. The Ox liver was sliced and tossed with chicory in a creamy sauce flavoured by the anchovies and chopped parsley. It was simply delicious and the texture was beautiful a it was soft and velvety just like pigs liver when it is done right but it does not have that offal taste like pigs liver. I was expecting the Ox Liver to not be as good as Calves but it was just as good. Overall, I was really impressed to try another liver dish served so differently to liver and bacon. Nettle and Ham soup! This was my second time having nettle and again it was blended. The first time was nettle pasta as a sauce and now soup with ham. Basically the nettle was blended. I kept finding white cubes which I thought was potato but it was the fat from the ham which was horrific. There were tiny pieces of ham here and there though.
This restaurant has been on my list for years, and I
This restaurant has been on my list for years, and I finally got to it on a recent trip. Came with a large group and booked the private room, which was perfect for our needs. Service was excellent. We ate: + Roast Bone marrow and parsley salad + Kohlrabi + Whole roast suckling pig + Potatoes and greens + Rhubarb pavlova + Ginger loaf and butterscotch sauce The bone marrow was as perfect as everyone says - such a generous portion in each bone. Definitely the most amount of bone marrow I have ever seen in one place. It was the large format dining option, but still. The whole roast suckling pig was just ridiculous. Really good. Also enjoyed the potatoes and greens because I am a huge cabbage fiend. The desserts were tied with the bone marrow as my favorite dishes, though. I think I ate more of the dessert than anything else. This location also has a mini bakery counter during the day, where they sell the bread and doughnuts. I grabbed a vanilla doughnut the next day and it was excellent. Amazing all around!!!
The service was beyond slow as I thought maybe we did
The service was beyond slow as I thought maybe we did something wrong. It took 30 minutes it felt to get a second glass of wine. Food took forever and nothing really stood out. This was a restaurant recommended to me so I had high hopes. But nothing was memorable. Wouldn't recommend
Disappointing dining experience with taste and creativity of food not reflecting Michelin star status
Supposed to be one of the most well known and iconic restaurants on our Food Crawl dining venue list. This Michelin 1*,‘ nose-to-tail ‘ eatery, belonging to the legendary English chef Fergus Henderson, sadly turned out to be our trip’s only culinary disappointment! Made famous and put on the foodie map by Anthony Bourdain. He called this institution his ‘dream restaurant‘ in one of his ‘No Reservation‘ episodes, praising the ‘complete package‘ the restaurant has to offer. At that time, Henderson’s emblematic, simple and yet utterly delicious ‘ Roasted Bone Marrow with sea salt and Parsley Salad ‘ dish was just being unearthed by the culinary world……resulting in chefs all over trying to emulate it and putting similar renditions on their menus. We are by no means pointing fingers at our ordered food and giving them a ‘ thumbs-down ‘. Some of our choices, at least components of them, indeed tasted pretty good. However, based on the restaurant’s reputation and modus operandi of ‘less is more‘ and using a maximum of only 3 - 4 ingredients/components per dish. It is therefore expected that due to this simple and straightforward approach, the top-notched ingredients will be treated lovingly and prepared perfectly with skill and care. Sadly this was not the case. Our grilled Ox-Heart mains, for example, was over-cooked, dry and tough and accompanied by a bland, one dimensional, uninspirational sauce/jus. Accompanying side dishes and salads followed a similarly sad pattern and result. Identical to some Indian restaurants’ approach of using a generic ‘mother sauce‘ eir curry base. St John's mirrors a similar mannerism with their dressing. During our visit, a monotonous Horse-radish/Sour cream base concoction was broadly applied and used. Be it for our Veal tongue salad, the snails salad, the Ox-heart side dish or the side complement to our roasted Pheasant main! Where is the creativity usually found in Michelin star establishments? However, there were certain stand-out dishes worthy of mentioning. The deeply flavourful Beef Broth, with ingredients similar to the traditional Scotch broth, but using beef instead of lamb, was a definite winner. The well seasoned, juicy and moist Pheasant dish is another thumbs-up dish…... .possibly one of the best tasting poultry dishes I have recently come across! Lastly, the Blood Orange Eton Mess dessert was absolutely out-of-this-world delectable! The Pear and Almond cake was pretty fine too. Our lady server was most friendly, helpful and attentive, adding a crucial positive element to our dining experience! In conclusion, a fine example of….” You win some, You lose some! “
Well worth a visit
Very interesting concept and a great venue for last nights wine dinner. Most of the food was outstanding; brown crab meat on toast canapé and asparagus (starter), chicken pie (main) - all to die for. Some dishes less so but even then, the general standard and presentation was good. Not so sure about the Michelin star - and pricy as a result - but I’d definitely recommend.
I was very excited to eat here.
The menu changes daily and uses the animal head to tail. I fear my expectations weee too high for this place. The dishes were good but extremely simple. And that's their style. Simply dressed and seasoned. The very present Welsh rarebit and Madeline's were not to be missed. Reservations are must. Service was unexpectedly spotty but there may have been a shortage. Michelin rating very questionable in my opinion.
Relaxed Atmosphere
We went for a lazy Friday lunch. Nice and bright restaurant. Staff attentive. Food excellant. Not rushed. A perfect Friday afternoon.

St. John is a must-stop on our visits to London. Since the menus change regularly, I was concerned on our scheduled date that some of the "big hitters" wouldn't be available. Well, we hit the menu jackpot! Deviled kidneys for a starter and goat faggots & mash for a main course. Seriously, it doesn't get any better for nose-to-tail enthusiasts! Mussels, Welsh Rarebit, green salad, and braised cabbage, hokey pokey ice cream and apple sorbet w/ vodka were some our other choices - all excellent. Service was efficient and friendly. Atmosphere was energetic without being loud. SJ spaces out the dining room well so you never feel crowded. And finally, this has to be a "best value" Michelin star restaurant. We ate at Dishoom (love it!) the night before, and our tabs were pretty similar. Cheers to the staff at St. John!
Informal Bar Lunch
Met a colleague here in the bar area, rather than the restaurant. Great selection of beers and wines, although the wine by the glass rather expensive. Both went for the Welsh Rarebit followed by Eccles Cake & Lancashire Cheese. Excellent.
A perfect meal.
Elevated, comforting flavours using great produce treated with care and not overfussed. The brill special of the day was exceptional as well as the date loaf with butterscotch sauce! Staff were helpful and friendly and the vibe of the restaurant is welcoming and tasteful.
A Must Do EXPERIENCE
On our final night in London, and vowing to stop and go here on every Euro Trip, my wife and I feasted on some very unique fares. I had the blood cake and she had the deviled calf kidneys. Started off with the bone marrow app. First time enjoying nose to tail dining. This is the place! Very helpful staff. To get to our menu choices we asked for a description on some of our candidate choices. Choices indeed! There. Said it 3 times. We were unprepared for what we heard. From ingredients to cooking temp to every detail of the process from kitchen to plate to table. Excellent! Check this place out. We will be back!
Michelin but not pretentious
It may sound like an oxymoron, but an unpretentious Michelin restaurant. I had a business lunch and it was great. The atmosphere is more like a bistro than a formal dining room, the service was efficient and formal rather than pretentious. I started with the brown crab, which was nice but the star was the saddleback, pork loin cooked a little pink. It was flavorful, tender, as good as can be. An enjoyable restaurant.

I was quite disappointed by this meal, from start to finish.
I'll start with the parts I enjoyed - the potatoes were great, dessert was great, and wine was great. The pigeon was prepared very well. Unfortunately, I don't have many positive things to say beyond that. We had to push through a crowd to enter the restaurant, and then we were seated in a dining room that felt like it belonged in an American bbq joint. The doors to the dining room were opened the whole time as servers were going in and out, which led to an unfortunate draft throughout the meal. This was probably a night-specific experience, but it set an unpleasant tone. Service was slow and impersonal, although allergens/dietary restrictions were accommodated well. The braised lamb was added onto the menu as a substitution for the game pie, and I truly could not eat more than a few bites of it. Flavors were unpleasant, and it was not prepared well. Everything else was forgettable - the cabbage that came with the pigeon was ok, the beef and lentil broth was ok. Altogether it felt like a disjointed, careless meal. I am disappointed because people talk about this place with such reverence, so I hoped my experience would be more pleasant. Not the place for me!
The most relaxed star meal I’ve ever had!
St John was honestly the most chilled Michelin experience I’ve ever had. The setting is brilliant, it’s 100 mile an hour with all the staff zipping about the place, it’s great to see such a different type of restaurant to the usual white table cloth, quiet Michelin spots you become accustomed too. Another thing that I’d never seen before was the coat racks around the room, normally coats are ushered off to a dark room but here they’re hung where you eat, not in the way, not a problem, just something really different. We had the Crispy pig skin for a shared starter which was just the best pork scratching that I’ve ever had. I also had their signature Roasted Bone Marrow on toast, one of the best starters I’ve ever eaten. My wife had the Duck Pate, nice but nothing we’d not had before. I also would encourage everyone to try the Rarebit, blew my mind! The mains were where I really appreciated how relaxed the place was. I ordered the Teal Duck and was encouraged to use my hands to really get all the meat off the bone. At first I was a bit skeptical but looking around and seeing other people doing it I got stuck in! My wife had crispy pig cheek for her main and again it was incredible, so filling too. Dessert was my favourite dish of the evening, I had the Buttermilk Pudding which came with the most incredible rehydrated figs. They gave a real mulled wine, cinnamon flavour when paired with the creamy dessert absolutely knocked my socks off. My wife had the Ginger loaf and butterscotch sauce, far too rich for me but she loved it. I’d been meaning to come to St John for years before I eventually made the booking, I’m just gutted that I’d not been there sooner!
A wonderful restaurant experience at all levels
St John is special, and it's been special ever since I first came to the restaurant in the 1990s. Few restaurants get all these things right - food, service, and atmosphere - but St John does. The food is the best of British: a bit quirky, imaginative, and incredibly tasty. The service is sublime - you don't get this type of service anywhere else in London - attentive, but not overly so. You feel the waiters/waitresses could sit down with you and enjoy the meal with you. They're at the same level as you - and just really nice. The atmosphere in the impressive whitewashed former smokehouse is buzzing with people enjoying themselves - and the great food. This place is an institution. How many restaurants in London have been going for 30 years and consistently been offering all the above? Few if any. I hope to return to this wonderful place for many years yet...
Meat heaven.
A paradise for meat lovers. At first you wonder if it's old, but then you feel ashamed when you see the service and food. I suggest you prepare yourself for this feast by going early and sipping your beer at the bar.
We were super excited to dine at St John.
Many food loving people recommend this place to us. I love whole animal butchery and simple honest cooking methods so why 2 stars? Sad to say, we did not enjoy what we ate at St John Bar. Maybe it was an off night? Or I was expecting something more. I prepare similar but better food at home on a week night. For example, the bone marrows were just ordinary and needed more parsey. I prepare it the similar way but I cook local grass fed beef bone marrow over hard wood fire, sprinkle with flaky Læsø Salt & Tellicherry Peppercorns then dress it with fresh parsley from our garden and splash of white Balsamic vinegar. Other dishes were ok as well but we felt they were overly rich and not balanced. Fish was fresh and fine but I do not understand their sauce pairing. Greens were overgrown, tough and too fibrous. People call me Bunny because I love raw greens more than anything but I could not eat it. Kids enjoyed a mountain of the freshly baked Madeleines. They were 5 stars.
Great meal away from the busy tourist spots of London in quiet clerkenwell
Great find off the beaten track. Looks like some garage but wow the food was delicious. Many meat based dishes..we were four and shared many...all were great.
Great Dining Experience!
Wow! I am a bit late in writing this review, but my goodness, I am still thinking about this restaurant and my experience eating here. The restaurant atmosphere is very hip, with a bit of industrial meets "meat." I was a bit late arriving due to traveling into the UK from the EU that day and had a minor delay, but the bartender kept my coworker engaged in pleasant conversation. From the moment we sat down, we had such high levels of friendly service all the way to the end of our meal service. The food was really amazing. We shared the potted pork on toast (I still think of this) and the bone marrow with parsley salad (yum). My coworker ordered something I can't say I would expect to see on a menu in the US but there it was...lamb's liver. He said it was sweet and delicious tasting. I ordered the Guinea fowl that was so good I went cavewoman style by picking it up to eat every morsel off the bones. We ordered a couple of sides including the Jersey potatoes. ...and that bread served before the meal was so delicious. I love that this restaurant has its own winery and we enjoyed the Claret with our meal. For dessert, I tried something very unique, which was the gooseberry ice cream, and my co-worker had the ginger loaf. The gooseberry was sweet-tart and really unique. The ginger loaf was just as you'd expect - dense, sweet, and delicious. We finished the meal with a 20-year Dow port. It was a great experience, and I would definitely pop into London to eat a meal at this place again.
My wife and I dined at the Spitalfields location with
My wife and I dined at the Spitalfields location with clients some years ago and were told the raw pigeon was "cooked perfectly," but not learning our lesson we returned to the Smithfield location recently. We both became ill hours later and remained unwell for several days. Again, the restaurant confirmed the meal was perfect and deflected blame. Could be coincidence. But we won't be returning.

Great Service - amazing dinner!!
Read about the site in NYT and bought a reservation at Mother Wolf in LA 2 days later. Worked great and the food was amazing!!!
Worked perfectly!
Got the reservation (that I couldn't get anywhere else) and was able to entertain a group of friends at the infamous Bern's Steakhouse.
Got into Nobu Malibu
Wonderful! My parents are visiting and we have wanted to go to Nobu Malibu for years. I tried getting a reservation myself but it was next to impossible. So glad I was able to buy a reservation on appointment trader for a decent price!
Very easy
Was very hesitant going into this experience but am glad to say that it worked out very well ! will definitely use appointment trader in the future
Fabulous Lunch
I was veeeeeerry skeptical that this would work, particularly at a restaurant as hard to get into as Nobu Malibu, and it was perfect! We had lunch outside on the patio and it was fabulous!
Great reviewer team
Just wanted to take a second to shout out the reviewer team. Even though they probably review hundreds of listings and bids a day, they still take the time to leave great comments and respond relatively quickly. Thanks!
Incredible
I got a reservation to Don Angie, which I've been trying to book for weeks! I am very happy with this service.
Best platform out there!
Super simple, easy, and fast to secure reservations for hard-to-get restaurants and locations!
This app is life changing
This app has opened my world up to so many wonderful new experiences I would never have the chance to have without access to this awesome app! 10/10!
Worked perfectly
Was a little nervous at first but was pleased to see that the booking went through flawlessly.
Highly recommended.

Worked well, got me into a restaurant with no availability
I was skeptical, and I still don't really know how they managed to find this hard-to-find reservation, but it was a win-win from my point of view, and I'll use this service again.
Last minute reservation for Delilah Las Vegas
Got a last minute reservation, dinner for 2 at Delilah Las Vegas: super impressed! The process was simple, transaction seamless. We had an amazing time! Couldn’t be happier! 😍
It works!
Ok at this point I've attended a reservation purchased on AT by a friend and sold a reservation personally. Both worked pretty smoothly, nothing sketchy about it. A few areas for improvement including a way to more directly communicate between buyers and sellers, but the app always seems to be in development. AT customer support is really(!) responsive and helpful too if you have questions!
Money transfer
As a seller, I like the fact i have the ability now to transfer money out of my AT account and into a bank account. Makes getting the money much easier then the process before.
Love this app
Got to go to places otherwise unreachable
Easy Access
Very easy to get into one of the hardest restaurants to reserve in New York.
Whose name will my reservation be under when I arrive at the venue?
It can be under your name or a name you choose! Some reservation offers already include the AppointmentTrader Transfer Service which will transfer the reservation in to your name. If its not included you can add it on after buying the reservation for a small fee. One thing on that though: As many reservations become available at last minute, taking a reservation in someone else name is quick and great for privacy. Most reservations on AT are listed with a virtual phone number, so all you need to do is present the phone number at the hostess stand and you are good to go!
Payouts Blocked Because of Sell Through Rate
Does anyone know how AT plans to handle cases where a seller is quitting the platform but has a sell through rate <25%? The error message I got said to fill more bids or find other ways to increase the rate.
Is AT really going to block sellers from withdrawing their money? Especially revenue made before the sell through rate was introduced??

Let’s go. Get more people placing bids!
I will give you 50% of ALL of my PROFITS if you teach me how to make profits?
LOL. Thank you The New Yorker.
Appointment
Transferring reservations is not supported in AT. Why not just use the name in the AT screenshot?
Buyers interested in Bern's Steakhouse: PLEASE READ
Same goes for 4 Charles and I Sodi
Prepaid Reservation Fee
Agreed. Ultimately not addressing this month after month is clearly resulting in a drop in certain venue’s rankings & sales.
Congrats on 3 mil
🍾🍾🍾🍾🍾🍾🧨🧨🧨 now on to 30 mill!
Need to cancel a bid, not getting a response… how do I do it?
Click on "Take off the Market Option" in your portfolio
Working on your bid?
Your bid has been “matched” with a reservation. From the time a reservation has been located, the seller of the reservation must connect with moderator to give transfer information for reservation. If the seller;however, does NOT respond to reservation transfer, then your bid is reprocessed and returns to the first step, which is connecting your request to a reservation.
Process after bid is accepted.
Hey @EvocativeFold67, welcome to appointmenttrader! Once the reservation is in your portfolio, you definitely own the timeslot, the review team would not have approved the trade if the reservation wasn't confirmed - so you are going :-) Judging from your post you bid today and are going tomorrow - don't worry as long as you initiated the name transfer, you are good - the transfer service has to work with the opening hours of the reservation team of the respective venue. You will likely see the transfer confirmation a couple hours before your reservation time.
Where do the Reservations on AppointmentTrader come from?
Mostly from people who don't need their reservations or appointments any longer. AT has no relationship with places listed and acts as a platform connecting buyers and sellers making sure that listed reservations are real and that privacy is not compromised when transacting.
What happens if my bid expires unanswered?
Hey @FluffyStar64, thanks for the question! When you place your bid the amount gets transferred in a deposit account, the second you either cancel your bid or a few minutes after the bid expires the funds are moved back into your main account from where you can refund it to your payment method or use for other transactions.
