I checked this place out when visiting san rafael and glad I did. The portion sizes are generous and I eat a lot. The food is delicious and I want to keep trying all the different dishes. the bistec was yummy and the shrimp was so good.

I have only been here once, but I was unimpressed by the food. It was ordinary and nothing special, in spite of lines being a half-block long all year around. Whatever is great about this place passed me by on that trip.

"Well, you know what they say, you don't sell the steak, you sell the sizzle."-Kramer, SeinfeldWell at Sol, they sell BOTH!Da Scene: was heading to 4th street in San Rafael to visit Marin Mystic Treasures and decide we would hang out for lunch this past Saturday. My brother in law is an officer with the SRPD and said we HAD to visit Sol... "yes officer!"Da Grub: ok, went a bit big even though it was just me and the wife, but Carla is used to me over ordering... "we can have the leftovers later..." heh, heh, heh. I went with the Mofongo Camarones which was very tasty, perfectly cooked prawns in a savory red sauce over a pile of mofongo and a side of avocado. Carla went with the steak of course (das my girl!) Bistec Encebollado was grilled with onions, with rice fried plantains, and magical black beans - addicting, I wanted to order another side, but I had to save room for yep, we ordered the Bistec Sammie as well... highly recommended by officer friendly! Believe the hype, this is close to a perfect sandwich, went with double steak, sauted onions, fantastic pink sauce, avocado, some cheese, hot pressed goodness!Da Service: You order at the front and hunt for a table... early enough we scored some seats; we'd heard that can be an issue. Tables come stocked with utensils, napkins, Pique sauce and a green plantain... not to eat, just for Puerto Rican flavor and ambiance! Service was quick, the Cafe con Leche and Coco Pina came as we were still settling down and the grub soon after. Wait staff came several times checking on things, nice folks all around.I agreed with the masses on this one... ya gotta visit Sol when out this way, you won't be disappointed. TIP: you can pick up a bottle of the pique sauce in their market next door... it is great on anything, particularly grilled stuff. Don't skip the black beans either!
Be the first to ReplyI have been wanting to try Sol Food for a while.
I ordered a few items a la carte so I could try items: mofongo, caldo gallego, a piece of chicken thigh, and camarones criollos. The mofongo had chew, juiciness, and crumbliness all at once. The soup was full of umami flavors and warming. The chicken was pretty good and moist. The shrimp dish was scrumptious and I put a lot of the mofongo bites into the shrimp sauce. The chicken broth that came with the mofongo was also flavorful and delicious. I loved everything and would want to try other things on the menu.

The first time that I came to Sol Food, a few years ago, I was underwhelmed. I expected more from this hot spot in Marin. My first assumption was "Of course it's popular in this area". I have come to really enjoy the food here and the quality that it offers. One of my guilty lazy pleasures is the egg sandwich. Although it's very simple, it reminds me of my mom's huevos con jamón breakfast. Would I come back? Of course and I have. I'm glad that they now have the pink sauce because I'm a huge fan of sauces.

I've been coming to Sol Food in downtown San Rafael at least once a month for about a decade. The food and staff are wonderful. Only downsides are that it's not open late anymore and I miss being able to go to the patio behind the 4th street store entrance (now it's just the take out and main restaurant around the corner). As far as recommendations I typically rotate between the classics: Pollo Al Horno, Cubano sandwich, Bistec sandwich, and the Nino Pobre sandwich. The Ponche drink is great too. Honestly you can't go wrong with anything on their menu.I'd definitely recommend Sol Food to anyone visiting San Rafael or to anyone interested in trying Puerto Rican food!

I've gone here a handful of times over the years and they never disappoint. They are always busy but service is fast and staff is nice. There are a few communal tables. It's a small spot. I don't remember all of the dishes we've ordered before but no one has ever complained. Everything is fresh, cooked on point and always left full and satisfied. Usuals that I get (basics): Mofongo Relleno de Camarones Bistec EncebolladoTostones con MojoAgain, all on point. Sauces and spices are not over the top, nothing is too spicy and everything cooked just right.

I drove by this place a couple months ago on my way to my son's water polo tournament. We saw a long line and I thought, "This place must be good."We're back in Marin and after my son's tournament we made time to come try Sol Food. The line wasn't too long. The service is pretty efficient. While you're in line, someone comes out and asks how many in your party and hand you a menu. Once they have a table open for you, they invite you in to order. (They don't call you in order of arrival. They call you when they have seating for you.)Once inside, we were instructed to place our order at the counter first and pay, then pointed to a table we would be sitting at. I was so confused because I did not see an open table. Maybe she meant by the time we place our order, the table would be cleared. The ambience felt very tropical and warm. Puerto Rican flags and art decorated the walls. Ceiling fans hung on the ceilings. Plantains held down the napkins. We placed our order with a very nice and patient person. She explained some items on the menu. I wanted the coconut stew but since I'm allergic to shellfish, I ordered something else. I wish someone had told us about the specials because on my way out I saw that they had the coconut stew with mahi mahi! Darn. We ordered:Bistek Encebollado - Looked good in pictures. The steak was decent. The black beans were good. The tostones were tough. I think I was expecting them to be riper or sweeter. The salad was delicious! Loved the light dressing. Chuletas Fritas - Delicious and crispy. Chuletón Sandwich - Great sandwich with the same crispy fried pork chop. Niño Pobre Sandwich - husband enjoyed this sandwich. He also loved the fries. Not crispy enough for me but my family enjoys less crispy fries. Pudín de Piña - this pineapple bread pudding was so good! Soft and moist. Makes you keep digging for more. Tembleque - this coconut pudding was so creamy and full of coconut flavor! We ordered it with mango on top. So yummy!!After we ordered, we asked where our table was because we were still confused. The other staff members didn't know either because all the tables were filled. The hostess returned to tell us that we were sharing a table. Ah! I see. I wish that was explained to us since this was our first time there. By that time, more tables opened up and we requested a 4-top. I'd like to come back and try more dishes like rotisserie chicken or pork ribs, the tacos and their ponche.
