Excellent vegetarian Japanese food
Before any work related travel, I usually do an internet search scoping out local vegetarian restaurants. I was excited to discover Shojin, a vegan Japanese restaurant. I never thought I would ever find a 100% meat-free Japanese restaurant. I went to the downtown LA location and the restaurant is in a mall which was fairly desolate the day I was there. Food was great! Service was good. Appetizers 1. Various flavored edamame (sea salt, spicy) 2. Pirates of the Crunchy :Crunchy garbanzo beans and tempura flakes mixed with spicy oat cream on an avocado, cucumber, and shiso herb leaves roll Excellent! Main entree: Spicy tofu & avocado roll topped with slightly torched spicy oat cream, served with dynamite sauce Excellent! Dessert: Matcha green tea cake. OK. I think I didn't like the Matcha flavor much. Shogun's website has a beauful page describing the concept behind their food. They wrote "Our idea of luxury is satisfaction of the soul. A smile that shines from the heart.". I certainly left with a smile from the heart.

Having dined in many of London’s best sushi restaurants I can honestly say Shojin rivals the best of them. My boyfriend is a non-vegan and agreed! Indeed, this is the best vegan restaurant either of us has ever been too! An absolute must visit and has been one of the highlights of our trip so far! The tasting menu is incredible value and did not disappoint - the staff explained it changes regularly too (if we lived in LA we’d be back all the time)!

So impressed with their food. Just phenomenal. I can’t pick a favorite item because everything was soo delicious.
My top three rolls would definitely be the purple treasure 5.0, kiss of the spider woman and their dragon roll.
The maple glazed Brussels sprouts were sooo good and their sparkling lavender limeade was so refreshing.
First time trying Dassai Nigori and it was soo smooth. I highly recommend.
We had to try the dessert and it was the perfect ending for a delicious feast.
Organic, vegan and gluten free heaven.
The staff was so friendly and kind even though we showed up at closing time.
I also appreciated the mouthwash in the bathroom.
Vegan and Gluten Free and Wonderfully Japanese
Most of my experience with vegan restaurants has been little vegan cafes with muffins and veggie sandwiches topped with cashew cheese. So actually, it's rare that I have found a place that has Vegan and Gluten Free put together, and even rarer that a vegan restaurant can make you feel immersed in a culinary experience. Shojin blew me away. This location is in Little Tokyo on the third floor of a shopping galleria where there are several restaurants, but I highly recommend making a reservation. The entrance is hung with a blanket behind the person currently checking vaccination cards and reservation times, giving it the feel of a speakeasy.
Inside, the ambiance is soft and artsy - during the holidays when we were there, the music was jazz for the season.
The biggest and nicest surprise was that whereas the menu may mention words like "tuna" or "shrimp" (we avoid shellfish) the dishes are actually vegan, all flavored to taste like those kinds of sushi. For example, mushrooms are made to taste like mussels, tofu like shrimp, tapioca like fish roe. Also, the cocktails are all made with sake - for instance they had a warm vegan egg-nog spiked with a sake that was reminiscent of rum. That they had a rum-reminiscent sake was no surprise as the sake menu is very impressive.
We ordered the seasonal taster special: one price for two people, which had dishes like pumpkin croquettes, brazed Brussels sprout, and eggplant sushi as part of the ten or so offerings that included a delightful amount of gluten free tempura crunchiness. We also ordered some "sushi" rolls and an amazing green matcha tea cake with an in-house made vegan coconut banana Ice cream.
I would say this is comfortably an $80/person experience or more, depending on what drinks are ordered.
By the way, after paying the bill, we left something at the table, and our server chased us down through the mall to bring it back to us. I mention this because it typifies the care and dedication of the wait staff. They kept our water full, offered to customize anything we wanted, and made it an amazing experience. A must try in LA.
Good vegan sushi
We went to that restaurant and had a quite experiences . The staff are very nice and attentive. The food are delicious. We were surprised that vegan sushi turned out so great. The only bad thing is the music is so loud especially for my man who's wearing a hearing aid. It was so uncomfortable for him.
Anyways we love the restaurant, the foods and highly recommended to everyone.
Awesome Vegan
Our friends took us to this restaurant and it did not disappoint! The vegan food was the best I have ever eaten! My husband and I have been eating vegan for a long time, but this was so superior to what's out there for us to eat, we wish we had one that we could enjoy on a regular basis, the Shojin Dynamite roll was so delicious, I think I could of had a plate of those and been happy, but onwards to the meal, they picked what we should try and it ws all great! Tsugu was there to make sure it was a perfect evening, and it was, the service was impeccable and it was a great meal! We will eat there again when in LA!!
Be the first to ReplyGood food but music was too loud
Fusion Japanese Vegan food with several items customized without garlic and onion. Special anniversary menu was very appealing but absolutely no substitutes.
Music was on the loud side so the customers on either side spoke even louder.
BEST VEGAN SUSHI
Amazing discovery with this restaurant in a mall, in a strange area... but the discovery menu, tasting menu was so good we went back twice!

Not only is this food tasty, but healthy, and rare find, dedicated gluten free! Plz experience some authentic Japanese food, as well as some fun rolls, all while having a break from unnecessary gluten.
A must visit for vegans a
Vegan sushi
Had a lovely, very filling meal after a long flight. The ramen was tasty, the sushi dish had intense flavour. The cauliflower tempura was good. Didn't have space for dessert. Took a while to find the restaurant.

This is my favourite restaurant in LA. The first time visiting, I was confused as I wandered through the mall and then through the curtained entrance to the restaurant. But once you pass through the curtain, the space is beautiful and it is such a relaxed atmosphere while maintaining the air of a special night out.
The service is wonderfully attentive: the servers are there when you need to order, delivering the food with such friendly explanations and then revert to stealth mode as you enjoy the meal (l love hover-free service, so really appreciate this). The music is loud enough to enjoy, but not overpowering: you can have normal conversation with your table , no shouting over the background, which is such a plus. The food is delicious. Vegan Japanese and all of it is fresh and original. My eyes are always bigger than my stomach at this place! The menu is varied enough to be interesting, but not so big to cause too much indecision. You can't lose, the food is all great here. This last time we ventured into the tasting menu and it was fabulous.
