Shaya New Orleans Reviews from The Last Year
Middle Eastern cuisine at it's best
Middle Eastern cuisine at it's best. The homemade pittabread is to die for and matches perfectly with the well seasoned fresh spreads; baba ganoush, humus, etc ... The lamb: also amazing. Combine all this with a good bottle of red wine and you have a great dinner. Would definitely return!
A pleasant surprise
Great service and delicious food. Coming from the very diverse central NJ , I was doubtful if NOLA could beat us at Mediterranean fare. I was pleasantly surprised. The Hummus with Cauliflower, the small platter of Kabobs and the pillowy oven fresh pita bread were delicious. The signature cocktail drinks were worth it too - I had the one with hibiscus, tequila and pomegranate juice - refreshing on a very hot summer afternoon. The menu is compact and has great veg choices as well.
Perfect and Yummy at the same time
First although 5 stars it was a bit loud I thought about a 4. The menu is almost impossible to read and we really lucked out as our server walked us through the ordering. This was our first visit. We started with the chicken hummus, and then to the brussels sprouts. The hot nan bread came as we needed it, it was always piping hot. It was packed on a Wednesday night, and too hot to go outdoors. Our small plates were just as perfect. Really nothing is bad is what I quickly learned. The evening ended with a chocolate dessert in a glass. Geeeez it was just so yummy and a large portion plenty for 2.
Great Dinner
We took a bus, and walked a mile to get there and..... it was well worth it. One of the best meals I've ever had. The pita bread was warm and fluffy and just kept coming. The cauliflower hummus w/ caramelized onions was great, the smoothest hummus I've ever had. We tried Moussaka dip, and really liked it. It was refreshing and light. The waitress suggested getting food family style so we did. I felt a little weird only ordering 1 large and 1 small plate, but with the hummus, Moussaka and endless pita, it was more than enough for the 2 of us. We had the chicken thigh and brussel sprouts, both amazing. We topped it off with their recommended new dessert.....I don't remember the name but basically cotton candy on top of ice cream. It was really good. Shaya is not in the typical tourist area but when we saw this place on "somebody feed Phil" we wanted to try it. It is definitely worth going out of the way to eat here.
Yummy pitas and hummus
Pretty restaurant though we did takeout. We had the lamb ragu hummus. The hummus was delicious. The lamb was ground and strong. The pitas were thick and yummy. Pitas for the win!
Excellent Middle East food
A delicious meal with excellent attentive service. The ambiance is chic but a little noisy I also found it a little on the pricey side but worth it
Not Welcoming AT ALL!
This restaurant was an utter disappointment! I wanted to introduce a friend to authentic Mediterranean food and decided to try Shaya based on how good it's supposed to be. We walked in requesting a table for 2 and the restaurant was not full. We were asked if we had a reservation (which was not a requirement). The hostess seemed hesitant to seat us and asked if we could come back in about 15 minutes. We asked if he needed our name so we could reserve a table. He said no. We asked his name (which I don't recall). So we ventured to a few of the shops across the street to waste time. (The shops were really nice.) So after 15 minutes we walked back in and the hostess literally said 'I'm sorry, we won't be able to accommodate you today.' Like, what? You mean for the whole day?? It's only 1:30 in the afternoon. He didn't offer a wait time, he didn't encourage us to make reservation, he didn't suggest we come another day. No need... I will never step foot in there again. Saba is just as delicious and far more accommodating to people of color! But we went to Olive on Carondolet and the food & atmosphere was amazing. A true family restaurant that knows how to treat customers. Stay away from this place!
Best hummus & pitta I've ever had.
Get the fried chicken hummus & several of their salitims. Good happy hour (half off hummus & glasses of wine).
I came in with high expectations as I had heard about this
I came in with high expectations as I had heard about this place for years, and left thinking that this may have been one of my best restaurant meals ever. The smoked labaneh was something I've never heard of before, and we certainly scraped the dish clean. The chicken thigh entrée was fantastic; the bed of rice and yogurt it was served on was noteworthy. I'm usually not impressed with restaurant steaks, but the hangar steak will linger in my mind for a long time. I'm not sure I've had a bite so tender yet flavorful. I'll be recommending this place to anyone who will listen for a long time.
Food was amazing! We started with the roasted cauliflower
Food was amazing! We started with the roasted cauliflower hummus. The hummus itself was so good you could eat it with a spoon but it was served with fresh warm pita that was out of this world! We also shared the ikra, moussaka, and baba ganoush. All were really flavorful and delicious with the pita. I'd recommend sticking with shareables/small plates because we were so full by the time our large plates came out. I highly recommend the Brussels sprouts. They were delicious. For main courses we got the chicken schnitzel sandwich and the falafel sandwich. Both were delicious but we were pretty full by then and had to take most of main courses to go. My friends said that Shaya was the food highlight of their trip to New Orleans! Best meal we had! And the service/atmosphere was great too.

Popped in for a little Linner/Dunch with one of my girlfriends. It is always light and inviting in the dining room. We opted to sit at the bar, where Neil was our bartender and waiter. He was fun to chat with and the service was absolutely top tier. He helped us choose our drinks, which we had the maramiya and the alive and well. The sage in the maramiya was so good! Very delicate drink and the herb was not overpowering at all. Always get the 5 salatim---moussaka and labneh are an absolute fav but I love the beets and baba as well, the charred green onions are great on there. And DO NOT sleep on the fried chicken hummus- extra chicken and extra salsa verde. We got the crudités, but you have to get the pita as well. Thanks for taking care of us Neil! We will be back.

Shaya has become one of our go-to restaurants in NOLA for an absolutely splendid meal. Our favorite is to sit at the bar and get some small dishes; our favorites include sujuk pride, falafel, the Brussels sprouts, and any of the salads. Service has always been top-notch, and the ambiance is perfect for a spiffy date night.

Located in a small unassuming building but with ample seating comprising of a second floor and outdoor patio. Clean and welcoming inside though the music is quite lively so intimate conversation may be difficult. Service was top notch. I had gone by myself during jazz week and it was quite busy. Definitely recommend making a reservation. They bring out fresh bread with a Mediterranean dip. Easy to fill up on just that alone. From 4-6 there's a special 50% off the hummus and possibly other small plates. It's a great deal so definitely recommend going a little early. The waiter recommended the chicken leg and thigh. Was very impressed. Crisp on the outside skin while practically fall off the bone tender underneath. Incredibly combination. I don't know how they did both but it's hard to forget! One of the better restaurants outside the French quarter according to my friend who did residency in New Orleans and I think he might be right!
I didn't get to go to Shaya on my first New Orleans trip
I didn't get to go to Shaya on my first New Orleans trip this year so I had to make that happen this time. I got a last minute late reservation (it was Passover) because they were booked. I was quickly seated and greeted by my server. He went over the menu and answered questions. I asked for a recommendation between the fried chicken or the mushroom hummus. He suggested the mushroom and I was excited. He brought out a fresh pita with an olive oil dipping sauce. It was warm and cooked right there in the dining room in the oven for everyone to see. When the mushroom hummus showed up I was beyond pleased. The mixed mushrooms had been sautéed in a brown butter sage and the flavors were so deep and satisfying. It was also topped with za'atar and hazelnuts. The hummus was extremely smooth and simply flavored. It wasn't overdone. I wanted 10 more orders! I also felt like I just had to have the pickles. They are seasonal and made in house. The selection for that day was cucumbers, turnips, and turmeric cauliflower. Now when I tell you that cauliflower was delicious I'm being so for real. I asked for a container of it to go! It was vinegary but bright and flavorful. I wanted a salad and the Fattoush with the sumac pomegranate vinaigrette just jumped out. It had pita chips on the side. There were shallots, sweet peppers, and possibly some sort of radish on it as well. I enjoyed it. For my main I ordered the lamb kofta kabobs and the Brussels sprouts. I was getting full but they both were delicious. I ended the meal with the Labneh cheesecake which had citrus notes, spiced nuts, date caramel, vanilla gelato, and a ginger snap crust. Perfect ending to an amazing meal!

Perfect spot to eat! We started with the lamb hummus and some cocktails. They make a really good old fashion and the road to kfar is awesome. The hummus was really filling so we had a range of actually meals. A small plate following like the salad or the kebab is ideal, but if you want some leftovers the arayes was a crowd pleaser. The restaurant was really busy for lunch but service could have been a little faster.

We had the best dinner at Shaya! The restaurant is cozy, yet open at the same time. Our service was outstanding, while the food was superb. We have never had hummus as tasty as this fried chicken hummus. And the naan was AMAZING! We usually stick to your typical New Orleans cuisine when we visit, but this is going on our list of MUSTS. Thank you for your beautiful food and ambiance.

This restaurant is seriously fantastic, especially the falafel sandwich and cauliflower hummus! Shout out to our server, Mason- he was so nice and attentive!! The restaurant was beautiful, clean, and cool, I can't recommend enough
Hidden Gem
We enjoyed a wonderful meal here. This is a sharing style restaurant, not that you have to share if you prefer otherwise. We thoroughly enjoyed everything, from drinks to food, service, atmosphere, everything! Upon arrival, we were received with smiling faces. Our group of 4 had not made a reservation in advance because we were unsure of how our day would unfold. They were welcoming and understanding about this detail. We requested to be seated outside since the weather was so lovely. There was a little bit of a wait as other tables needed to clear out, so we stopped at the bar for a drink. Their bartender, whose name I regret not asking, was fantastic. She is definitely an expert at what she does. She asked our flavor likes/dislikes and whipped up 4 unique cocktails, each one tailored to our preferences. Once we were seated and began selecting dishes to share, it was clear that everything on the menu sounded delicious! We did enjoyed the fried chicken hummus, mushroom hummus, beets, and brussels sprouts as our smaller plates. For larger plates, the shrimp, salmon, and lamb shank were big favorites. To top it off, dessert was a tahini chocolate mousse, which was light and refreshing in a way mousse has never been before. Service was fabulous. We were tended to, but never felt rushed at all. This place is a gem! I cannot wait to go back.
Cute restaurant
Trying to find out a kids friendly restaurant in the neighborhood, came across this warm place. Delicious food, nice service
Slightly Disappointing.
My husband and I were thrilled to visit this spot bc we love Iranian and Mediterranean food. After eating heavy for several days in the French Quarter, this was going to be a welcome respite! We met some local friends of my husband's here for dinner and chose all the appetizers, cauliflower hummus, and fresh pita to start. Their pita bread is warm and fresh and delicious - the star of the show. That, paired with the hummus was delicious. The other appetizers I didn't love (we did the choose 5 sampler) and could've just been happy with the hummus to start. I had their Iranian salad which was basically just fresh cucumbers, red onion, tomato and feta. A huge portion and fresh and light and super delicious! You can add a protein and this could've been my entire entree. I added the shrimp kabob and my husband had the lamb. Neither of us were impressed. My couscous was cold... I ordered a scoop of gelato for dessert and it was a small spoonful for $3 not an actual scoop in a bowl. Overall, the meal was extremely expensive for what we got. I loved the hummus and salad. Probably would not be back - tons of other options on this street.
Share the food - order lots of appetizers, small plates
Excellent Middle Eastern (Israeli, Lebanese, Moroccan, Turkish) food. Had 5 appetizers, 2 small plates & 1 large - enough for 3.
Very nice restaurant
Shaya did not disappoint. We went for happy hour and had really good wine and the fried chicken hummus was incredible! The restaurant is really pretty and I highly recommend!
Meet Corporate Dining
The restaurant is now part of a corporate agglomeration. The former owner, who was the subject of global restaurant television show is no longer the owner. The food was flavorful. The menu has interesting choices. It all hints of being formulaic (and not in the sense of following a good recipe).
Great food
We enjoyed our dinner here tremendously. What I was surprised to learn is that Alon Shaya no longer owns this restaurant and has started a separate one (Saba). The food was wonderful. We shared a bunch of dishes- hummus, the beets (excellent), the chicken thigh/leg with rice (fantastic). The babaganoush was also wonderful. We ate at the bar and Neil our server was great. We were there during Mardi Gras and he was great about making us special to-go cocktails as well!
Delicious Middle Eastern Food
This was our final meal in New Orleans, and we had a great time. We had a combination of appetizers/small plates and entrees including cauliflower hummus, lamb kofta, halloumi, falafel, lamb shank, and hangar steak. All were very good!
Great Mediterranean, great service
Kind of out of the way in what I think is called the Touro District, this place is a gem. Listed most places as Israeli, it's really IMO a Mediterranean place. We had one of the hummus plates and shrimp kabob. Hummus is possibly the creamiest we have ever had and smooth-tasting. Shrimp were grilled in a lemon sauce and served over couscous and a tomato sauce (haraime) with chimichurri - fabulous. And the warm pita they bring you to share is to die for. Many teas, cocktails, and wine available. Server was very attentive. Reasonably priced although not cheap.
Disappointed
Robert our server was excellent but my chicken schnitzel sandwich was so dry and my fries were cold.Unfortunately was my first and last visit
