Shanghai 21 New York Reviews from The Last Year
We met up with a friend who wanted to explore Manhattan's
We met up with a friend who wanted to explore Manhattan's Chinatown. She picked Shanghai 21. She ordered and she ordered quite the spread. 2 orders of soup dumplings, 2 orders of shumai, squid in oyster sauce, I think, garlic snow peas, a fish, pork fried rice, a noodle dish, and a beef noodle soup. There was 5 of us! Lol, but I love that she ordered things that we wouldn't normally order with just the 4 of us like the snow peas. Soup dumplings were average. Shumai was average. I liked the squid. First time having snow peas like that. I loved them, although they were kinda sweet. I was thinking more of a oyster sauce and garlic deal like on chinese broccoli. The pork fried rice was so good. My favorite on the whole table besides the snow peas. The spicy beef noodle soup was good. Got it for my son, cuz he loves Taiwanese Beef Noodle soup, but I forgot we weren't at a Taiwanese restaurant. I just saw Beef noodle soup and my mind went there. Whoops. Anyway, I'm not sure if I would be back, but it was a decent place.
Amazing place to try some Shanghainese food.
Buns were extremely soft, dumplings tasted fresh and the spice level for general tso's chicken was perfect. Servers were friendly, and super quick.
A satisfied customer
Excellent! Everything was fresh and came piping hot. I would recommend the Shanghai hot and sour soup. Made to order, it was filled with lots of fresh vegetables. The staff was professional and friendly and very accommodating. They let you linger until you were ready to leave.
Give it a try!
What's with the negative comments about the food? We went here for dinner..had to wait in line, that is fine. Clientele was a mix of tourists and locals, I think. Ordered soup dumplings. SOOO good. Almost as good as what I remember from another local restaurant that has since gone downhill. Son ordered the duck, which came in some sort of plum sauce. This was delicious and VERY RICH, so it would have been hard for me to have as an entree. Husband and I chose the Shanghai style low mein. DELICIOUS. I was pretty nosy and kept looking at the other dishes going out of the kitchen. Everything looked amazing (and I appreciated the fact that there was plenty of shrimp in the low mein; it wasn't just weighed down with vegetables). Only glitch was that we had to ask another server for our check because our server disappeared and we sat with empty plates waiting to be cleared for over 20 minutes. I'd still come back.
Food not good. High prices, low quality
Food was poor do not recommend. One of the few restaurants that look ok from the outside but not a good choice. Full of tourists and service staff were unfriendly

Food was great and definitely worth the wait, which was half hour and I was told it would be.
Food was amazing, glad we found this restaurant, the wait
Food was amazing, glad we found this restaurant, the wait was worth it. I forgot to take pictures of the rest of the food, but everything was delicious.
Food was on point, liked the salt and pepper calamari, pork
Food was on point, liked the salt and pepper calamari, pork fried rice, kung pow pork and low main. Would def recommend and will be back again, restaurant was small and at 1:30 on a Wednesday we got last table. Worked out great.
Stumbled upon this place while exploring China town.
The hot and sour soup hit the spot since it was so cold outside, it had plenty of bamboo shoots, mushrooms and tofu. It was delicious! The soup dumplings had lots of pork and crab meat and were very filling. The wrapper was on the harder side and the skin still ripped easily so you have to be very careful when picking it up. Service was very quick and the inside of the restaurant was clean and it was nice to sit and eat.
In the center of Chinatown
In the center of Chinatown, even though it was a Tuesday evening we had to wait about 20 minutes, so I imagine it is much busier on weekends or during tourist periods. I personally got the pork dumplings (D4 if I'm not mistaken) and the shrimp and pork noodles (T8). Either way they were good. Advised
One of the best spots in the city! Great service, fresh and
One of the best spots in the city! Great service, fresh and amazing tasting food! The shengjian bao and the Szechuan shredded beef are a MUST TRY!!!
Absolutely delicious Shanghai noodles, saucy and loaded
Absolutely delicious Shanghai noodles, saucy and loaded with unctuous umami! The salt and pepper shrimp were served literally seconds from the deep frier, crisp, fresh, hot and not greasy! The sautéed greens in garlic were some of the best I've ever tasted with a marvelous sauce of garlic and soy. Service was fabulous- the host over delivered by telling us wait time about 30 minutes was actually only 20. Our order arrived to our table nicely timed with each dish seconds from the wok! Fun green colors on the photo screens made the vibe energized and fun! Judging from the smiles on the diners, Shanghai 21 is a top dining spot for Chinese Cuisine!
Great food and consistent.
Know what you're going to get and the price point is okay.
Can't go wrong when you eat here.
Everytime I'm in Chinatown I stop here for string beans and soup dumplings. Very straight and to the point if it's not packed, but if it's packed I know it's gonna be a 15 minute wait which is fine, I just get a moon cake from the bakery around the corner or grab a bubble tea from the next street over. Food is always tasty and the service is always fast and they don't harass you to get out once you're done like some spots. Always take ppl here if they are visiting me and want to see Chinatown. Only thing I'll say is that over the years the skin on the soup dumplings are getting a bit thin and can sometimes be a bit overcooked to the point where when you lift the soup dumpling from the steamer basket they stick and once pulled fall apart. Other than that, again you can't go wrong here.
Good food.
Service a bit surly. Ambiance is harried and super busy. Come here for the food.
Not sure how or why I haven't left this place a review.
I've been going here for years, even before their now name of Shanghai 21. I've always had a good experience while here, with the staff being great consistently and enjoying what we have ordered off the menu. It's gotten busier and busier, solely based on my last few visits to this establishment. If you come in during a prime eating hour, definitely expect to wait for at least a little but. They serve water on the table, and you're ready to roll once you're sat at the table. Take a look at the menu, and there are plenty of options to choose from. Over the years, I've tried quote a few items and can't remember having a poor experience. I'll continue to keep coming here in the future. Unless the quality goes completely downhill, I'll continue to patronize their business. Do note: there is now a service charge automatically put on the bill.
Good, clean, accepts debit cards
Restaurant with oriental cuisine located in the Chinatown neighborhood of Manhattan. Given the positive reviews we decided to try it and we did well. It is very clean, which is important if you decide to eat in Chinatown. One of the few restaurants in Chinatown that accepts electronic payments. Very importantly, it is advisable to book. We waited 1 hour to be seated. Good food. Correct prices.
Great choice
Great kitchen. Fast service, clean and very tasty. A large selection of dishes on the menu. Definitely recommend further. 👍
To do
You have to be patient and ignore the color of the walls but the food is very good and the service is fast. The establishment is very successful so there is a bit of a wait.
Just great 2nd visit
We tried for lunch and the wait was very short and the service and food was just as great. Truly a gem amongst a ton of average Chinese.
In the heart of Chinatown
Delicious Chinese specialties in the heart of Chinatown. Be careful of the portions which are very large :-)
Endless Chinese cuisine!!
Great place serving authentic Chinese cuisine. The options were endless. It looked like many patrons were paying with cash, and I regret not finding out if we could’ve saved some money by paying cash instead of credit card. But either way, great food, I’ll come back again.
Great fight in Chinatown
By chance we came to this site after receiving a recommendation. It is actually very good with a mix of oriental flavors. I recommend it
Nothing special
Nothing special. Good pork ravioli in soup. Spring rolls a little oily. The beef fried rice however was disappointing. The rice was not crunchy and the beef was soggy. Very generous portion but not exciting.
Ave food cheap prices
Read the reviews and tried it out. Short 10 minute wait on a Thurs At 4p. Ordered a variety of appetizers (4 total): soups, dumplings, egg rolls. They were average at best. Same ole can be found at any restaurant. The best thing was it was cheap for NYC standards. $30. No alcohol is available. They do take credit cards on a $20 minimum.

The main page will typically show you restaurants rankings based on city. I am new too and its been mostly guess work and trying the ones that are high ranking. I right now am sticking to top 10's but still waiting to hit that first sale.
