Scales Portland Reviews from The Last Year

Amazing! Eating solo I made a resy for a bar seat and was so glad I did! The bartender was delightful my cocktail was perfectly on point. I ordered the scallops which were fabulous! I would recommend those or the halibut both are wonderful. I would never go to Portland without adding Scales to my dinning experience! Hint make a reservation way in advance!

Had an early dinner at Scales this week on our trip to Portland. The restaurant was a little difficult to find, but once we found it, we were very pleased with our meal. Some of the best mussels and oysters we had in Portland. The outdoor seating was completely covered, and our waitress was very nice and professional. Definitely a must try in Portland!

I had a Big Mac tonight, but it was fancy! The burger was so simple yet elegant. I highly recommend it. Our waitress, who was top-notch, enchanted us with the story of their house-made brown bread. We were nearly convinced to order it, but ultimately decided on the ramp rolls. These ramp rolls were nothing short of phenomenal. We could have devoured them as both appetizers and dessert. The Branzino was a masterpiece, perfectly cooked and bursting with flavor. And the broccolini? It was so delicious, it disappeared first.

Fourth of July weekend, we walked up around 8 pm, immediately got an outdoor patio table. The whole flounder was great, the stew was delicious and service was immediate and attentive. Recommended to other friends passing through to Bar Harbor. On the way out, we had a nice chat with staff about the massive tuna head on the iced display table.
Went to Scales on a recommendation from a friend.
Made a reservation about a month in advance. We had a wonderful time. Drinks were delicious, setting was beautiful. I had steamer for an appetizer and they were plentiful and wonderful! Butter sauce was delicious. On to the lobster which was really good and came with cornbread and coleslaw. My husband had the scallops which were delicious. We had a popcorn Carmel ice cream dessert that was out of this world! Service was great- thank you Tim. We will be back for sure!

Delicious! Outside of a local seafood boil, this was fantastic. Highly recommend. Staff is equally amazing!
Updating my review for the better.
Came in and sat at the bar close to closing time and was happily accommodated. Just drinks and apps. Had the oysters and wow, they were one the best raw ones I've ever had, sweet, briny and leaves a good aftertaste. We also shared steamers and mussels and garlic bread and they were divine. Good drinks and pour too. It was a good night!

This was the perfect high tier restaurant with great seafood options! The ambiance was perfect. I would highly recommend the mussels as an appetizer - included was a generous amount and the flavor was very nice. For a nicer restaurant this is the perfect spot!
Our family had a wonderful meal here.

Had a beautiful meal at Scales while visiting Portland.
I had the halibut and my husband had the scallops...both were excellent, as were our appetizers and dessert. The atmosphere is elegant but modern with great views of the docks. No wonder all of the locals we've talked to on our visit urged us to go to Scales! Don't miss it! Tip: we didn't make reservations in advance of our trip because the Yelp reviews, while good, didn't particularly stand out to me. (Can't believe we almost missed out on this incredible place!) I suggest making reservations in advance but, if you fail to do so, show up right at 4 PM and go to the hostess stand to see if they can squeeze you in that evening. Apparently, they set aside a certain number of seats for walk-ins each day. It worked for us!

My husband and I walked in the day we got married from city hall to have dinner here. We didn't share it with our server because it was SO busy and didn't want to add any extra stress to her plate. We didn't catch her name, but she was very attentive and nice. The place was packed on a Monday at 6pm. But we were seated quickly with no reservations so lucky us. We started with espresso martinis, appetizers were: grilled octopus, half an order of oysters and half order of clams. They were both sooo fresh and delicious. The food was all truly amazing. For our entrees we had steak special, which was steak frites with chimichurri sauce. SPECTACULAR. I ordered the scallops, which were also amazing. This was the best food we've had in a long time. Absolutely nothing to rate less than 10/10. It began to rain right as we were ready for the bill. But that changed nothing. Hopefully we will be able to see this place again sooner than later. We're from California and we'll be raving about this place forever.
The steamed claim appetizer was awesome.
Halibut, fantastic; lobster roll was money. Skip the Branzino and seafood stew, not worth the money.
The staff were all kind.
The ambiance is very open and lively. We had a nice seat overlooking some of the water. We ordered some non alcoholic beverages that hit the spot. We ordered the clam chowder that had a beautiful herby flavor we also ordered the steamer clams. I was a little put off by the tails that you have to pull off. The broth was very good. My husband enjoyed his sea scallops. The tuna dish was not something I would order again. It just was more raw than seared and I recognize that may be the way it's done in Maine but it's still not my favorite flavor combination with the purè. The presentation of each dish was gorgeous.

The restaurant's policy requires ALL members of a party be present before a party can be seated. If you're a party of 10 but only 9 people are present - you won't be seated. The restaurant's policy requires all members of a party be present before food orders will be taken as the kitchen staff require appetizer and entree orders be taken at the same time. You are allowed to order drinks but not appetizers. The food is average at best. The clam chowder I ordered was thin and watery. The fried scallops I ordered were ok, but far from being worth the price. The wait staff were attentive and pleasant. This was my first, and will be my last, time dining at Scales. There are far better seafood restaurants in Portland.
Thank you for a wonderful evening
Our son treated us to scales last night for a 50th anniversary dinner. It was the first time each of us had dined there and it was a wonderful experience. From the moment we approached the hostess stand until we left for the evening we were greeted warmly by all the staff we interacted with and several people wished us a happy anniversary. We each ordered a different entree and we each thought they were very good. We moved to Portland 11 months ago. Last night's dinner was by far the best experience we have had. As I told our waitress when she was clearing our plates, our son ate every bit of his dinner. He is an excellent professional chef who has cooked for several celebrities and dignitaries, including a president, so we are often disappointed at the quality of the food even at acclaimed restaurants. My husband had the halibut, which I had a taste of, and it was excellent, so moist. I had the Lobster Frites, and our son had the scallop dish. Either though I have lived in Maine my whole life I had never tried "real" Indian pudding. I was nice and let my son have a taste, even though I didn't want to, LOL, and he liked that it was not as sweet as others he has had have been. Our son enjoyed being able to see what was going on in the kitchen. Thank you for giving us a memory making evening. We will be back!
Phenomenal
This is one of the best restaurantsI have ever been too. Everything cooked to perfection. Do delicious . The service was attentive and excellent. Loved the vibe. A must go if you are in Portland.
Slightly less impressed with my revisit a good year later.
The service from Ben was impeccable, I can't say enough great things about him. I was there with a group of friends (from away), and one member of their party also had Scales recommended to them as well, so they were excited to try. Lavish spenders, promising to cover my part of the bill, I took advantage and tried a few different things. The oysters were okay. Neither here nor there, though I feel like I've tasted better. The cod fritters were pretty good, though maybe not a million miles from something I could get from Trader Joe's. The ceviche was one of the better items, I feel like that's the sort of thing I wouldn't be comfortable with trying to do at home. The scallops... I love scallops and maybe it's just that I know I could have cooked this at home, I felt a bit disappointed. Even the sauce was just "meh" well cooked dish, but kind of basic. Wish I'd chosen something else. Worth noting that the group tried all the breads, and I can attest, they were all really good. Maybe I chose poorly this time, maybe the menu didn't speak to me. I know they got the goods, so of course I'll come back again and hopefully get my socks blown off like I have in the past.
Great lobster and nice service.
Patio was comfortable-- but pretty dirty windows. Didn't matter. I came for the food
Excellent food, excellent service and beautiful ambiance.
Only thing I would change would be to relocate a few tables due to the crowded feel when seated where chair backs are hitting into each other when getting in and out.
absolutely beautiful restaurant right on the water.
the building alone is so large but so pretty on the inside. it was so busy and for good reason. service was amazing. food was phenomenal. my husband and i split the steak and lobster with a bottle of wine. i don't live in portland but we will definitely be visiting again and coming here! highly recommend.
Amazing Food, Great Service, and the Atmosphere was great.
Definitely would recommend checking this place out before you head out of Portland. Possibly the best seafood restaurant in the area would recommend every time.
Nice place and ok good.
I personally didn't like it much but others I was with did like it. I thought service was a little slow and prices were very high. We spend over $350 for three people.
Continues to offer the very best of Portland
Such a super good restaurant always, never disappoints. Ben was his excellent usual self as a true professional while charming and efficient. This is an expensive Portland restaurant, but we believe it's worth it (charging for the rolls etc.). Speaking of the ramp rolls the price increased to $6.50. The seafood soups were both excellent. The raw scallop tasty and the steamers superb. All so good, the seafood stew and the whole fish. We will be back with or without visitors. Thank you for not charging any type of extra fee, rather pay for the rolls!!
Great Seafood Place with a Great Vibe!
We were visiting Portland for three nights in mid May and I knew we wanted to eat at Scales. I made reservations at the bar as soon as our dates became available (2 months ahead). We were seated right away and our bartender, Guy, took excellent care of us. The place was buzzing with great energy. We had a lovely bottle of Sao Joao sparkling Rose to start, plus a half dozen oysters. It is really cool when you sit at the bar that they just put ice in the trough in front of you so when it's time to clean up, they just whoosh the ice and shells down a hole in the counter. Also, they have a guy who is a "master shucker" who opens up oysters in no time. We decided to order smaller plates and not a large meal, so we started off with the Ramp rolls. Oh my god they were good! Instead of getting dessert, we ordered another serving of the rolls. The Asparagus salad was dressed perfectly in a lovely lemon vinaigrette. The Tuna Tartare was so fresh, but preparation was just a little too much for us. It was hard to discern the tuna because the other ingredients were very flavor-forward. Our seatmates offered a taste of their Brown Bread and it was fantastic. We've never had anything like that before. I highly recommend eating here and sitting at the bar. Fun times!
Amazing dining experience, possibly the best I have ever had!
OK, if you are in Portland (or Maine in general), you MUST make your way to Scales. I have only had 1 other flawless meal in my life and my visit to Scales lands on top. From the service (ask for Meredith), to the cocktails, to the fresh from the sea taste, to the presentation and let’s not forget sitting with a view of the docks, it was a meal made in heaven. The oysters were super fresh as was the Halibut Ceviche. I had scallops in a sauce I could eat every day. Thank you Scales for an experience I will never forget.
Everything I wanted it to be
I love how bright and open this place is when you get inside. The warmly acknowledged our occasion. Pacing and service were great, and the food was excellent. Ramp Rolls are delicious. Enjoyed the oysters, and our entrees - from both land and sea - were wonderful.
A Consistently Great Choice
What amazes me is the consistency of good service and great food quality, year after year. Well done, and don't change! The menu has enough for everyone, and the mains are delicious. The desserts are equally so. Wine list is good. Service is also friendly and good. The atmosphere is nice, and unique on the pier/wharf, with high ceilings and big windows. The noise does build, but the high ceiling helps. Prices are high-ish. Best main: Scallops in the pan, with bacon, mushroom, garlic, and cream sauce. You will need some bread to soak it all up. I highly recommend making reservations in advance.
Fantastic scallops
We wanted typical Portland food and went to this restaurant. The scallops with bacon and asparagus were fantastically delicious, the lobster roll was very good with lots of fries (didn't need that many), but very expensive for a lobster roll, $36. The restaurant has a pleasant atmosphere, although a bit loud, and the service is very friendly.
The place for superb seafood on the waterfront in Portland
My brother John and I recently visited Portland, Maine, eager to savor an exceptional seafood dinner. Luckily, we stumbled upon Scales, which surpassed our expectations. We started with their delightful Cloverleaf Rolls and spectacular grilled octopus. For our main dishes, John chose the Seafood Stew and I had the Seared Scallops, both of which were delicious and perfectly accompanied by a bottle of Granbazan Albariño. Our server, Benjamin offered excellent recommendations and checked in on us frequently to ensure we were OK. Adam Beckworth manages the restaurant well as reflected by its very friendly and helpful staff. But the heart of the operation is Executive Chef Fred Eliot and his kitchen team. The quality, creativity, and tastiness of their creations are why Scales will be our go-to restaurant for future visits to this wonderful town.
Great Seafood
Excellent upscale restaurant with some stunning and creative dishes. As the name suggests, the menu focusses on seafood, but there are terrific land options as well. The only criticism I would offer was that after the slightly obnoxious demand that we order appetizers and entrees at the same time, the appetizers arrived over a span of almost 10 minutes, so we could not all eat them together.
You'll need 2 orders of brown bread......
Over the years we've been to Scales many times. If we stay in Portland, this restaurant has always been our favorite. The food is always good, but one thing to be aware of if you order brown bread. When you order a side of bread, you imagine it would be enough for 2. Although it was delicious, the order consisted of 3 small 2 1/2" diameter circles. It looked like half an order. Page was our server/bartender as we were seated at the bar and was terrific. She was very knowledgeable about the menu and wines. Thank you for a good experience Page.
Great seafood right on the waterfront!
What delicious seafood in a fantastic setting right on the waterfront! Best lobster roll of our 8 day trip around the New England seacoast! Great salad too! Great service! Call for a reservation! Added bonus: The neighborhood was very walkable with many interest sights and quirky shops.
Seafood at its finest
Not sure this place could be any better! Beautiful dockside restaurant with big windows on the water and pier. The food was well prepared and absolutely outstanding. Service was superb….I would highly recommend this restaurant for a true seafood experience.high end and not cheap but well worth it. Reservations essential.
Excellent!
Excellent lobster and lobster roll! Great atmosphere and service. The bar and sitting area was really nice, we got some drinks before our reservations. Highly recommend!
Great Seafood and Great Service
This is a very busy seafood restaurant right downtown. Luckily they have valet parking. The food and service was very good. I had fresh oysters then seafood stew. There was lots of fish, clams, mussels, and squid in a tasty white wine tomato sauce. She had grilled bronzino, filleted table side which was moist and nicely cooked. Our friend had seared scallops which were large and cooked just right. The chocolate chiffon cake was the perfect finish to the dinner.
Great location, seafood, service
Consistently great service and food. Timing of apps, entree's , desserts is always spot on. On this visit...enjoyed a dozen oysters, Seafood stew, sticky toffee pudding. Friends enjoyed scallops and halibut. Garlic rolls and anadama bread shared at table. Valet parking in the busy old port is a major bonus. Tips: request window seat with reservation- order the garlic rolls. Bread is al a carte.
Could Scales be Portland's Finest? And no ridiculous kitchen wellness fees
A really superb evening and dinner experience without any additional kitchen fees added to our bill. Caleb is a really good and professional waiter, knowledge and personality and attention to details. We enjoyed very much the Potatoe leek soup with crab; seared tuna; smoked fish pate and those crab fritters. We decided to share several appetizer plates. Perhaps the stilton & endive salad might have benefited from a little more stilton in the dressing. Wines were a decent Godello SP white, but unfortunately the Bonny Doone red is not what we remembered from several years ago. The dessert menu seemed to have somewhat of a British influence, and sticky toffee pudding is not something I can resist. It was a huge disappointment to this Brit. However Caleb was able to deduct this from our final bill. Excellent waiter representing ownership, but I already said that. We have been frequent customers since opening in 2016 and will continue to visit Scales a terrific restaurant with no ridiculous kitchen wellness fees. Thank you
Food, atmosphere & service on point
This spot was great for a casual night out with an upscale farmhouse vibe! Service was impeccable, Seafood and steak were on point and the oysters were a fun lil extra at the bar! Absolutely will be back 👍🏻👍🏻
Delicious Food, Fantastic Service
I took my father here for dinner following a Maine Mariners game. It was my first time, but he had been there recently. We were both very pleases and happy with our meals. We started off with a Maine Clam Chowder and Tuna Poke bowl, both were great! We then had the Pan Seared Scallops and the Fish & Chips. Both these entrees were incredible. Cooked to perfect/requested temperature, incredibly fresh, and leaving you wanting more. The Sticky Toffee Pudding was the perfect ending. The hint of orange was a pleasant delight, not seen very often. This is definitely one of our go to spots and highly recommended.
Truly magnificent
My boyfriend and I came in tonight for our 3rd anniversary, and we had the absolute best time. Our table had the best view of the Christmas lights outside, and we even got to see fireworks right from our window (although you probably won’t have a firework show, it’s still worth a visit). The food was absolutely delicious! We had oysters, ceviche, tuna crudo, lobster, steak, and the most amazing dessert! Our waiter provided outstanding service (including cleaning our table between courses and ensuring we didn’t wait for anything). I can confidently say this was the best experience we’ve had in Portland. Thank you so much to the Scales team for making our night so amazing. We appreciate you so much ❤️

First thing to mention is this place is arena loud, so yelling is a must. The quality of product is excellent. That should guarantee a great meal but it does not at Scales. The food was like a training center for inexperienced chefs. The 4 oz Halibut was seared on one side and bland on the other. It was also pretty rare but the quality saved it from being sent back. There were 2 tiny fingerling potatoes and some nuts thrown in for texture i guess and it was $42 lol. The stew had what tasted like some canned sweet tomato broth. It has 3 bland mussels and clams like they were added after the broth was made, and a burnt piece of bread, $38. I was searching for whitefish in the broth, none. I liked the crab fritter appetizer and service was friendly. Another example of a bad and absurdly prices Portland Old Port spot surviving on location location location.
One of the best meals I've ever had.
I don't normally eat at such fancy places, but I had just come into some extra money, so decided to spoil myself and a friend on our road trip. The squash soup and the clam chowder were so good and unbelievably fresh. We both ordered the scallops with bacon (which actually turned out to be more like cubes of pork belly) for our entrees and both of us practically licked our plates clean. Our server was also super friendly and nice.

Great Service - amazing dinner!!
Read about the site in NYT and bought a reservation at Mother Wolf in LA 2 days later. Worked great and the food was amazing!!!
Worked perfectly!
Got the reservation (that I couldn't get anywhere else) and was able to entertain a group of friends at the infamous Bern's Steakhouse.
Got into Nobu Malibu
Wonderful! My parents are visiting and we have wanted to go to Nobu Malibu for years. I tried getting a reservation myself but it was next to impossible. So glad I was able to buy a reservation on appointment trader for a decent price!
Very easy
Was very hesitant going into this experience but am glad to say that it worked out very well ! will definitely use appointment trader in the future
Fabulous Lunch
I was veeeeeerry skeptical that this would work, particularly at a restaurant as hard to get into as Nobu Malibu, and it was perfect! We had lunch outside on the patio and it was fabulous!
Great reviewer team
Just wanted to take a second to shout out the reviewer team. Even though they probably review hundreds of listings and bids a day, they still take the time to leave great comments and respond relatively quickly. Thanks!
Incredible
I got a reservation to Don Angie, which I've been trying to book for weeks! I am very happy with this service.
Best platform out there!
Super simple, easy, and fast to secure reservations for hard-to-get restaurants and locations!
This app is life changing
This app has opened my world up to so many wonderful new experiences I would never have the chance to have without access to this awesome app! 10/10!
Worked perfectly
Was a little nervous at first but was pleased to see that the booking went through flawlessly.
Highly recommended.
Success on Short Notice
Was able to snag an indoor table at Don Angie through an absolutely seamless worry-free process.
Worked perfectly, thank you!
This is a crazy holiday season in NYC and I was very pleasantly surprised to see that AppointmentTrader works! Will be using again!
Worked flawlessly!
Worked so well! I was a bit nervous, but everything went very smoothly. purchased the reservation, and got into the restaurant seamlessly.

So glad I came across this app :)
Quick table in Miami
I didn’t have my hopes high as it was a party of 4. In 24 hours I had a carbone reservation available! I was very happy as my family really wanted to come here
Prime time, great meal
So easy and had a prime time which I can never seem to get on normal res apps. So worth it
Got impossible NYC res

Worked perfectly to get into Carbone. So delighted
perfect
Worked well, got me into a restaurant with no availability
I was skeptical, and I still don't really know how they managed to find this hard-to-find reservation, but it was a win-win from my point of view, and I'll use this service again.
Last minute reservation for Delilah Las Vegas
Got a last minute reservation, dinner for 2 at Delilah Las Vegas: super impressed! The process was simple, transaction seamless. We had an amazing time! Couldn’t be happier! 😍
It works!
Ok at this point I've attended a reservation purchased on AT by a friend and sold a reservation personally. Both worked pretty smoothly, nothing sketchy about it. A few areas for improvement including a way to more directly communicate between buyers and sellers, but the app always seems to be in development. AT customer support is really(!) responsive and helpful too if you have questions!
Money transfer
As a seller, I like the fact i have the ability now to transfer money out of my AT account and into a bank account. Makes getting the money much easier then the process before.
Love this app
Got to go to places otherwise unreachable
Easy Access
Very easy to get into one of the hardest restaurants to reserve in New York.
Whose name will my reservation be under when I arrive at the venue?
It can be under your name or a name you choose! Some reservation offers already include the AppointmentTrader Transfer Service which will transfer the reservation in to your name. If its not included you can add it on after buying the reservation for a small fee. One thing on that though: As many reservations become available at last minute, taking a reservation in someone else name is quick and great for privacy. Most reservations on AT are listed with a virtual phone number, so all you need to do is present the phone number at the hostess stand and you are good to go!
Payouts Blocked Because of Sell Through Rate
Does anyone know how AT plans to handle cases where a seller is quitting the platform but has a sell through rate <25%? The error message I got said to fill more bids or find other ways to increase the rate.
Is AT really going to block sellers from withdrawing their money? Especially revenue made before the sell through rate was introduced??
Tune into NBC News - Top Story Tonight 7:40p ET
Let’s go. Get more people placing bids!
I will give you 50% of ALL of my PROFITS if you teach me how to make profits?
LOL. Thank you The New Yorker.
Appointment
Transferring reservations is not supported in AT. Why not just use the name in the AT screenshot?
Buyers interested in Bern's Steakhouse: PLEASE READ
Same goes for 4 Charles and I Sodi
Prepaid Reservation Fee
Agreed. Ultimately not addressing this month after month is clearly resulting in a drop in certain venue’s rankings & sales.
Congrats on 3 mil
🍾🍾🍾🍾🍾🍾🧨🧨🧨 now on to 30 mill!
Need to cancel a bid, not getting a response… how do I do it?
Click on "Take off the Market Option" in your portfolio
Working on your bid?
Your bid has been “matched” with a reservation. From the time a reservation has been located, the seller of the reservation must connect with moderator to give transfer information for reservation. If the seller;however, does NOT respond to reservation transfer, then your bid is reprocessed and returns to the first step, which is connecting your request to a reservation.
Process after bid is accepted.
Hey @EvocativeFold67, welcome to appointmenttrader! Once the reservation is in your portfolio, you definitely own the timeslot, the review team would not have approved the trade if the reservation wasn't confirmed - so you are going :-) Judging from your post you bid today and are going tomorrow - don't worry as long as you initiated the name transfer, you are good - the transfer service has to work with the opening hours of the reservation team of the respective venue. You will likely see the transfer confirmation a couple hours before your reservation time.
Where do the Reservations on AppointmentTrader come from?
Mostly from people who don't need their reservations or appointments any longer. AT has no relationship with places listed and acts as a platform connecting buyers and sellers making sure that listed reservations are real and that privacy is not compromised when transacting.
What happens if my bid expires unanswered?
Hey @FluffyStar64, thanks for the question! When you place your bid the amount gets transferred in a deposit account, the second you either cancel your bid or a few minutes after the bid expires the funds are moved back into your main account from where you can refund it to your payment method or use for other transactions.
