May be a great place to entertain, but food disappoints
This restaurant occupies a good location on State Street and has a nice seating area on the front sidewalk. It may be a great location for entertaining and for drinks, but it disappoints for those seeking an authentic Southeast Asian meal. Sama Sama does not post its menu outside, so it's hard to tell in advance that it does not seem to emphasize food. Some food item described on the website 'order online' menu (like mie goreng fried noodles) were absent from the sparse dinner menu provided at the restaurant (which seemed like it had a total of four entrees?). While the satays are tasty, the nasi goreng portions were fairly small and generally devoid of taste. Though service was friendly and reasonably fast, those seeking Southeast Asian food might head to Los Angeles instead.
Be the first to ReplyVery cool place with Asian tapas for sharing.
A cool place with a rear courtyard accessible through the kitchen. Asian tapas are delicious and they feature a nice selection of wine. Popular place so be sure and reserve.

What a fantastic restaurant with a really chilled atmosphere. We sat in a terrace area at the rear which was great. The staff were attentive without being over the top. Food was great some of the best since we have been in California.

They had a big event that weekend before we entered. Both staff and menu items were in short supply. I had been there one time before and enjoyed it so much that this time I took my wife. She was not impressed. I am going back next week and hope that it's more like my first visit.
Be the first to ReplyAmazing atmosphere, service and food.
Great bustling atmosphere. Sat at the bar with friends and got great service from the bartender. Drinks were good, food was top notch, absolutely amazing. Would highly recommend this place.
Be the first to ReplyIncredible State Street Experience!
Just incredible. Can't believe a restaurant on State Street can be so good! Every dish we ordered was spectacular. We shared the ribs and they were so good we ordered a second helping. The marinade and the potatoes on the side with aoili equally amazing. We loved the brussel sprouts and the duck salad. Also the chicken on rice was great as was the noodles with pork. We sat outside and the heater worked well enough to keep us warm. The entire meal was just a wonderful treat!
Be the first to ReplySUPERB ASIAN FUSION CUISINE!
Discovered this gem of a place on State Street in Santa Barbara, the family had been here before and recommended it!. Wasn't a disappointment...excellent Asian Fusion Food, good service and a nice vibe to it. The "shared plates" concept is a great way to try more dishes and works well with Asian cuisines. We started with nice cocktails alcoholic and non alcoholic. The starter, Krupuk with 3 kinds of Sambal was good, we had an excellent Javanese Chicken curry Bowl with Rice and accomplishments. Chicken and rice both superbly flavourful. The rest came on to the table in quick succession! Nuri Ribs and Signature Wings both par excellence! A great Papaya Salad to blend in well with all the other flavours. The entire meal was a great combination of flavours and spices. Finished off with a Pavlova....not such an Asian dessert but hit the right spot after a fabulous meal. Would love to go back!

We ate a number of the sharing plates and enjoyed every single one of them! Great variety of flavours and tastes. Great service friendly atmosphere definitely worth a visit!
Be the first to Replygo here if you want less than par food and $30 cocktails
2 things to know... 1. they automatically charge your card BEFORE you sign, 20% regardless of service- small print says to tip kitchen-AKA owner doesn't pay staff properly. 2. they charged me $30 for a drink There are soooo many awesome restaurants in SB, I have never been impressed with the food, this last time was ridiculous.

Many dishes on this menu that I don't see other places. Because it's tapas style, we tried about 6 different dishes and loved them all. Mie Goreng was our favorite - ordered two! - and also loved the crisp rice salad. Hot Chicken Bao was our least favorite but still tasty.

Imaginative menu, good mixologist, good vibe, but a bit pricy. The octopus was totally worth 30 bucks but still cringing for the wallet hit.

In my life and work I have had the opportunity to travel quite a bit, and also come back to Santa Barbara where I have lived the past 25 years. When Sama Sama came on the scene, they introduced to me a whole world of flavors right here in Southern California. Everything I've tried has been delicious, and it's also a place where I have tried some things for the first time. Their Indonesian fusion dishes are delicious, and their wings are something I crave (I'm not a big meat eater, so add that in to the calculation). Friendly service, attentive, welcoming, it really feels like a neighborhood jewel. And, it is all so fresh, which I appreciate in these days of mass-produced food & packaging--here it's the real deal, and the menu does change occasionally to reflect that. The drinks are delicious and fun too. You can see their chefs shopping at our local farmers markets, and you know that you are getting the best.
Be the first to ReplySama Sama is Simple but Impressive. Check it Out.
Sama Sama is on State. It’s not super fancy outside. Really it’s just plopped in the street on a makeshift parkette. But wow did we like the food. Wings, ribs, and sate all memorable. Donut fritters and warm date cake were very well received by diners who usually don’t fancy desserts. The menu is all very interesting with a fun take on regional cuisine. We loved Sama Sama and we will return.

State Street is closed to allow restaurants to expand into the street. Very fun to dine and people watch. We stopped to have dessert - the Pavlova was outstanding!! Try it - you will love it. Be aware the restaurant does not have a restroom at this time.

Sama Sama was a special find while wandering state street. My wife is indonesian and she really liked the authentic indo food. We got a table at 5:20, but the place was packed by 6:00, on a weekday. She loved the Mi Goreng (pasta), Gado Gado (salad),
and we both liked the Java Chicken dish, a special that night, that was very appealing and had all the different flavors and spices represented on the plate. (We own several restaurants) One star less for the Bao - steamed chicken bun, which was a failure. The indo chef was out of town and the cook was probably overwhelmed and having an off night. We will definately will be returning.
My son (37) and I (67) had
My son (37) and I (67) had an enjoyable dinner last week at this venue right on State Street downtown. At 6:30 on a weeknight in March there were several empty tables, but it filled up by the time we left. Interesting Asian selections—we had the duck salad and the whole fish, with rice, both of which we enjoyed. Service was fine and the ambiance was pleasant. We’ll be back.

We had dinner at Sama Sama Kitchen before heading to the Santa Barbara Bowl. The food was so flavorful and we didn’t feel heavy and gross after eating. I think we order about 6-7 items on the menu. The drinks were also very good. But our favorite part of the experience was the outside patio, the ambiance was so nice. Will definitely be back :)

We really enjoyed our dinner here last night. Excellent food (we loved the octupus) and a very cool vibe even for just the drinks at the bar. The staff were also very friendly.
A really nice place for a casual dinner on your holiday.
Birthday Dinner
The decor is so simple, but accented perfectly. The starters to the full shared plates were perfect. There is certainly an asian influence, but something perfectly its own. The chef created a very well thought out menu.
