Nice historic hotel in the middle of San diego
We stay here a couple of times a year; it's never disappointed. This is a historic hotel with beautiful historic details, but it is an older hotel, so take that into consideration. Having said that, they have done a great job making it comfortable for modern tastes while keeping the historic vibe. Rooms have always been very clean, beds are comfortable, staff has been very helpful. The bar seems to have been recently upgraded- much better service and drinks this last visit than before. The location is great- walking distance to anything in the Gaslamp quarter, and convenient to all of the tourist destinations in downtown as well as Balboa Park.

We were in town for 1 night as part of our California road trip to catch the Padres game. Lovely hotel with great rooms, and ambiance. If you are considering it, book it as it is a lovely charming place to stay. Great location as well and really charming details and architecture.

Loved this hotel location and character. Nothing very fancy but a great location and good drinks as well as breakfast and dinner at the attached restaurant. I suggest you request a room on the courtyard vs the street since it was loud on the street side. Great alternative to the chains.

Such a lovely and beautiful hotel, great location and friendly staff. BUT, we did not sleep well. The floor vibrates constantly on the window side which I could feel in bed. There is also a loud humming coming from an extractor maybe below. The noise was constant. That and the vibration made sleeping very difficult. There was also a loud banding gate that was intermittent. We stayed 2 nights and the room did not get cleaned. The maid emptied our bin and threw some towels in but no coffee replaced or bed made. Such a shame.
Be the first to ReplyIt has hope but needs love from management to train staff on customer satisfaction and safety
I understand that after the pandemic it's challenging to find good people to work however even if the people are not the best, it's up to the hotel to train those people to be a stellar example of what the hotel stands for, to be customer service oriented, and to try the best they can. Unfortunately the Horton Grand doesn't do that with their employees or contractors. They obviously can't afford a concierge, so we were greeted by a sleeping security person. I thought it was funny so I giggled and accidentally woke him up - only for him to tell my husband to tell his wife "to chill out, and it is the season." I did go and apologize for waking him - however is security supposed to be sleeping on the job and the first introduction to your hotel? There was only one trash can in our room. I left a do not disturb sign on the door and asked that housekeeping just leave the trash can outside our room. I came to find out, as we were leaving, that they not only entered the room with the door not disturb sign on it, but threw two personal items away that were not trash. So beware, they were not trained to and do not respect your privacy. On New Years Eve late afternoon, when there was a lot of chaos in the hotel - people coming, going, tours walking through the hotel, they continued to have a Security guard there. First of all I thought great, someone to check to make sure that only guests are going upstairs, only to realize that that's not what he was doing (different guy from above) he was just sitting there eating a sandwich checking nothing. So anyone could have walked in, taken the elevators, and broken into rooms. All in all the hotel staff had a "couldn't be bothered" attitude - when I booked I told them it was our wedding anniversary. They did nothing to acknowledge it, not even a Happy Anniversary. We had been to another hotel in a different city before our trip to San Diego and when we walked in the door, they greeted us with a Happy Anniversary - and we had a lovely handwritten note in the room when we arrived. It is the little things that make a hotel special and one that you feel like returning to. Horton doesn't do that. Also the arrangement with the Salt and Whiskey restaurant doesn't really work as efficiently as it could. We assume the entire restaurant staff (which is small in number) worked New Years Eve which meant that none of them turned up for the breakfast shift on New Years' morning - there was no notification, just you walked into the restaurant and there was no one there. Also, you can't sign anything from the restaurant to your room - you have to pay separately. If you walked downstairs without your wallet or purse because you thought you were staying on property, then it's inconvenient. You get used to it but it not how most restaurant and hotels work. Plus there could be more synchronicity between the two establishments - the restaurant could offer a 10 or 15% discount on purchases if you are staying at the hotel to try to encourage people to utilize it more. We tried the restaurant twice - the person who is chef in the afternoon is far better than the person who cooks in the morning. It was like going from a 4 star restaurant to something only marginally better than Dennys - the breakfast was awful to say it nicely. It was so polar opposite - we were going to go to the New Years Eve event but decided not to because we weren't sure about quality. Also, they requested that you pay for the entire meal (also requesting tip) BEFORE you had dinner. I understand good restaurants ask for a non-refundable deposit of $50 per person but this was $85 per person non-refundable. It was too risky. Other than those things, which can be fixed if they are addressed, the hotel is pretty. For some odd reason they keep a door open down one corridor which makes the entire front desk, lobby and restaurant like an ice box. It was colder inside than out. Location is amazing - close to everything. Rooms are clean.

We arrived early to be told that it would cost 75 dollars to check in before 4. The man in the front desk was rude and did not offer to hold our luggage until check in. I had to ask him for the service. Upon returning we found out that a 75 dollar fee did not exist. The manager offered us a discount and a late stay both of which we never received or wanted. The room itself was large but dated. Location is the only reason to stay at this sketchy property. Do better Horton and hire a friendlier honest front desk person.

Perfect location in the Gaslamp quarter, just around the corner from lots of bars and restaurants. The hotel has a lovely restaurant/bar where the food and service are great! Valet parking available at a daily fee. Reception staff could be a bit more enthusiastic but they do the job. Rooms are fine beds are very comfortable but keep in mind the hotel is quite old so maybe sometimes things don’t work as well as we’re used to. There is a lovely atrium area in the hotel that’s lovely and peaceful but mostly underused. I would stay here again.

Unique old hotel full of charm. The staff was friendly and helpful during my stay. I was in town for a conference and the location was perfect in the Gaslamp District. Short walk to the convention center, hotels/restaurants, and train. I would recommend this hotel and would stay here again.

Charming and elegant... on the outside. Unfortunately, mediocre on the inside. Banal and basic room amenities. Short 7 min walk to SD Convention Centre and close to GasLamp quarter. OK option If seeking convenient location & reasonable price. But dont be fooled by the charming exterior - the elegance is merely a facade.
Be the first to ReplyRoom 309 really is haunted
I am a skeptic.. I have always been a skeptic. However, whenever I can, I try to stay at a 'haunted hotel', preferably in the 'haunted' room. I have done this for decades. I have never had add anything resembling a supernatural experience. Until now. The room was beautiful with antique furniture and matching lighting. The sheets and towels were clean and the bay window, with its original glass, showed a lovely view of the street below. The plumbing was functional, If antique in its own right. The front desk was always helpful and always available. They were pleasant and able to answer most questions. Jeremy in particular was able to assist me. Now, either the "ghost" actually exists, or I had noisy upstairs neighbors and very thin floors. Either way, I DEFINITELY want to stay here again the next time I'm in San Diego. The ambiance of the building coupled with the pleasantness of the staff more than make up for any noisy 'spirit'. But I'll bring earplugs, just in case.
