This place is really an awesome find.
Featured on Eater, we found it welcoming with it's outdoor yet heated (tarped) area, casual and welcome host. The food was astounding. I haven't tried Moroccan food before, but I will heartily recommend this place. We had the:Harissa potatoes (amazingly crispy)Hummus and sides - this was a standout with the toppingsChicken sandwichFish sandwichEggplant beef tagineI could eat the tagine all day. Chicken sandwich was a standout amongst chicken sandwiches. Seriously unmatched. Give this place a try if you haven't been. We're going back.
Be the first to ReplyThe freshness and quality of this restaurant is
The freshness and quality of this restaurant is mind-blowing. The not secret because it's so in your face ingredient is love. Go to this restaurant as early and often as you can. I'll write more of a review, however the moral of the story is this place is incredible and instead of reading about it you can just look up their hours and figure out when you're going. Whatever you get will be great. We went out to celebrate and stumbled across Saffron De Twah on yelp which looked solid from the pictures. Our server, Tim, was lovely and personable. Another server also helped with bringing water, food, and checking in and was great, however, I unfortunately did not get their name to give them more direct credit and appreciation. Tim walked us through the menu, shared how everything is made from scratch, and gave some recommendations. To start, we got the loaded hummus (listed as Chef Omar's mom's favorite - it was amazing), the harissa potatoes (perfectly spicy), the beet salad (so many incredibly well balanced and fresh flavors), and chamoula (whatever your feelings are about cabbage or slaw situations, this is magic). Everything is fresh, made from scratch, and blatantly seasoned with a passionate love and appreciation for the flavor ingredients can offer. The khobz [bread] was fluffy and dreamy, and super useful for getting all of the sauces from each of the dishes. For the main course we had the lubia tagine (incredible), cauliflower batuta sandwich (perfectly fried cauliflower in a perfectly fluffy and light bread pocket, with an incredible sauce and onions), and the fried chicken sandwich (I'm vegetarian and this was one of those sandwiches that I considered taking a bite of because it looked so good. The two that did eat it said it was sweet from honey and very good).Shortly before the entrees came out we had the pleasure of a visit from Chef Omar who sat down and hung out for awhile. Chef Omar is a genuine delight and deeply committed to creating an experience and connection through phenomenal food and gathering to enjoy it (in a humble, straightforward, food is a love language and gift to others way).If the way servers/staff are treated and compensated is important to you (spoiler alert it should be), you will be thrilled to hear that folks are paid a living wage and tips are divided in an equitable way among front and back of house (i.e. servers and cooks). This is not the case in most restaurants in the US and it makes a huge difference in the quality of life, mental and emotional wellbeing of staff and that translates to your experience as a customer. If the restaurant owner's commitment to and engagement with the community is important to you (also something that will impact and improve the overall experience), your joy will continue to build in learning about the ways Chef Omar has been diligent about teaching folks how to cook and working to put together boxed meal kits (you can read about this on the back of the menu and online). If you read this far, cool. The initial point still is the main point: Go to this restaurant as early and often as you can. I'm excited for you and everyone else you share this restaurant and the experience with.

Took a friend here to introduce them to Moroccan food and it was all that and then some. Saffron is as warm and as welcoming as can be! Chef Omar came out to welcome us and was a delight to hear their passion of the food, area, and tidbits on other local favorites (I always love a community building space and I can say it's exuded here!).Before I focus the food I want to say this place is FULLY HALAL. While people seem familiar with what that means with food it does mean that all beverages are nonalcoholic--this also means all their beverages are made with the caliber and craftedness that are accessible and tasty for all! Food--if you aren't here for their amazing tagines (which if you're coming for lunch call then day before as everything is made from scratch, so most dinner time tagines start cooking in the afternoon), you absolutely need their fried chicken sandwich. Its one of the best in the city (eater agrees!) and the size of your face. And personally I think it lives up to the hype, the chicken was so juicy but the crunch was so ASMR audible even on the heated patio that I was in food lover heaven. Not to mention the delicate balance of flavors that the pop of coriander gave to the sandwich and slaw! Also don't sleep on the fried sardines--which also boasted of crunchy exterior and tender centers. The way they paired the ingredients with it tamed the fishiness to a most delightful harmony with the other components. The saffron tomato dip was delightful, and the orange blossom lemonade and watermelon jalapeรฑo soda were perfect companions to our meal! So in short if you want quality Moroccan food that's accessible to those familiar and unfamiliar with the cuisine/culture--run, don't walk, to this delightful restaurant.

We had an interesting experience but worth it in the end! Called ahead and confirmed that they serve halal food. Once my GPS told me I arrived, I was a bit confused and actually drove away at first. From the outside it looks like it's under construction. That's a hard to see sign with the name. The outside is covered in plastic tarp. I considered finding a different place for dinner at that point. We went inside and we were extremely disappointed when the first thing they tell us was that a bunch of things are not available, including tagine. We went at 4p and we were told we couldn't order tagine till 5. So we asked if we could order it and get it at five and they said no, it would be ready around 5:45. That's super annoying, why isn't that on the menu or website?? My friend and I were so frustrated but at that point we were so hungry we decided to stay. We are so glad we stayed! We ordered the hummus, the loubia, and harissa potatoes first. This was hands down one of the best appetizer combo I've ever eaten. The harissa potatoes are worth their weight in gold. The soft, warm bread w the tomato sauce and beans was heavenly. There were fried veggies on top of the hummus, so delicious! We also ordered a fried chicken sandwich. First bite was delicious, so flavorful and crispy. However we were sad to find the chicken was undercooked. Didn't finish it. But would definitely order again and make sure it's cooked well. We didn't have good pictures bc we ate everything so quickly! I've heard the tagines are excellent and I'm definitely going back for more! A few kinks in our experience but the food is definitely worth it. The owner came out and said hello and checked in, so kind. Would highly recommend!
Be the first to ReplyChef Omar came through with the best LUNCH for my Detroit
Chef Omar came through with the best LUNCH for my Detroit business meeting...24 Moroccan Chicken Sandwiches and a tray of the Harissa Potatoes....and at the very last minute cooked up two vegetarian meals for me...BINGO! Everyone was raving about the sandwich and the potatoes were GONE GONE GONE!! I highly recommend this restaurant.
Be the first to ReplyThe food is good, I've brought many friends here but Chef
The food is good, I've brought many friends here but Chef Omar's way of running this place has ruined it for me and many of my friends. On 4 different occasions he's informed us that our meals would take longer than it should because there were groups of food reviewers there and they had to wow them in order to get positive articles written while they have their "regular" customers wait and essentially be treated as if they do no deserve the same treatment because we don't write food reviews. I can almost guarantee I've brought in more new patrons than any of the yelpers/bloggers that he treats better than his regular customers. I stopped coming in for 6 months or so because of this and then when I came back for the first time in 6 months the other weekend the first thing Omar says is "hey guys, it's going to be a longer wait, we have a table of food critics and we have to take care of them so they care help further our business". How about treating all of your patrons the same, especially the locals that come often and bring new customers (at least I did before, and will not anymore). He has this crazy ego where he needs to be written up in every little local blog and is willing to treat his regular customers as if they're below these bloggers. Long story short, the food is good but pray there's no food critic there when you go or you'll be treated like a second class customer while Omar chats it up with their table for 15 minutes while you wait.
Be the first to ReplyRun, don't walk, to Omar's incredible restaurant.
And don't let the humble surroundings throw you. This is seriously good food from an expert chef. The low price is an unexpected boost. We'll be back, and soon. Highly recommend.

An almost hidden gem that our Detroit friends brought us to when we were in town. The owner/chef is super friendly and welcoming. Food was delicious.
Be the first to ReplyWow, wow, wow.
Nothing like you know about food. Fresh and unique. The flavors descended straight from heaven. The portions are large so bring your appetite. I had the lamb sausage. So light and flavorful, especially with soft raisins and other vegetables. The Moroccan rose tea is creative and flavorful, still nothing like you know. You scan QR code for menu, select your food and pay. Then the food comes to you. I am in just awe of this place. Ten stars if I could.
Be the first to ReplySaffron De Twah has been high on my list since I heard
Saffron De Twah has been high on my list since I heard about a Moroccan restaurant opening in Detroit. It survived COVID and my friend and I were excited to check it out. As others have mentioned, the exterior does not look like much, it looks more like a construction site than a highly rated restaurant. But once you open the wooden doors to the enclosed patio, the scenery changes. They have created a good sized patio, which is good as the interior is small. We ended up inside due to the humid day. The decor is sparse, I did like the succulent wall, but I was a bit disappointed that there was not more to the interior. We started with tea service, I had the mint, it came with the traditional glasses and an individual, ornate pot that the server poured for you. Slight complaint that the temp was more warm than hot. The potatoes read as a must order, so we shared these and the carrot salad. Oh, the flavor! Each was completely different, the carrots were light and fresh, mixing sweet and acid. The potatoes were just the right amount or heat, crispy on the outside and fluffy on the inside. Other reviewers are completely right, get the potatoes. The chicken sandwich they have become known for was not offered that day, I was told they have it as a special that pops up. The menu is not large, but it had what I had been wanting. Lamb tagine was my favorite dish I had in Morocco and Saffrons version was wonderful. My friend had the falafel matellas. This is a sandwich with falafel and lots of fresh veggies. It also came with a grain soup. Compared to everything else so was so packed with flavor, the soup was much quieter, but we both agreed we liked it. While the sandwich was good, we both agreed the tagine was outstanding, dream about, and come back again for. It managed to be flavorful, light, but with rich lamb. Between the veggies, meat, couscous, and yogurt sauce, everything was perfectly balanced. I do not normally go for dessert after such a filling meal, but I had heard good things about their ricotta cheesecake and it sounded interesting, so I ordered a price it go. My friend is really not a sweets person, but she had a couple bites after tasting how good it was. There is no crust, rather it is formed into a bar. Creamy, and textured the ricotta keeps it from being too sweet and much lighter than the usual cheesecake. It's topped with a tart cherry mixture.I thought it was nice that the owner/chef came by to check in, that's pretty unusual. He appeared invested in his guests enjoying themselves. The service was excellent as well. You order and pay on the app, which was different, but are greeted by a service and they are more attentive than average. Overall, fabulous meal and we both plan to return!Note: They do not serve alcohol. We stopped at Two Birds that was close by prior to dinner.
Be the first to ReplyAlmost missed this place because the outside kind of looked
Almost missed this place because the outside kind of looked like an abandoned building. However, once we entered the outside patio is was a nicely decorated area with Moroccan-esq decor. The food was very delicious. We had the harissa potatoes and fish bocadillo sandwiches with a delicious bean and corn soup on the side. And for desert we had a baklava style pastry that was crispy and the perfect amount of sweetness. Our waitress who was a beautiful red haired woman was very attentive to us and helpful. Also, the owner was super personable and friendly, came by and checked in on us as well as gave us recommendations and a complimentary drink. I would definitely come back here. Great service and great food!

Don't drive by, you really should be dining here! The staff is knowledgeable, the chef friendly and wonderful and the presentation of the food absolutely beautiful. Fun to experience Moroccan food in Detroit. We devoured the loaded hummus that was accompanied by a warm bakery bread, Saffron Tomato Dip, Harissa Potatoes (please order these! So yummy, crisp outside, soft inside and so flavorful), lamb tangine (just the right amount of perfectly flavored tender lamb with couscous) seasonal ricotta cheesecake (light and creamy) and a beautiful Moroccan tea service. They have a vibe and mission to embrace the community. I'm a fan and I'll be coming back but bringing more friends.

We would love to try saffron de twah with their original menu. It first started off with us being seated behind a curtain, which I believe, made us easily forgotten. We ordered two platters and the second never came and the other items did not come out together. And we waited a very long time for what we did get. The food that we did get was sub par and left us very hungry. The staff seemed overwhelmed/confused by what was going on and definitely seemed more concerned about the photographers that showed up to take photos of their food. I hope that they stick to what they know, or really practice when there is a menu takeover.

Be the first to ReplyThis is one of my favorite places for a flavor-packed yet
This is one of my favorite places for a flavor-packed yet still light meal. The various appetizer dips are so unique and worth trying each one. The chicken sandwich, when available, is absolutely incredible with a perfect combination of sweet and savory. Chef Omar also hosts tasting events with unique and refreshing drink pairings to each amazing dish. Chef Omar and his entire staff are also incredibly personable and friendly, making you feel right at home in this Detroit gem.
Be the first to ReplyI live about 6 minutes from Saffron de Twah and it's been
I live about 6 minutes from Saffron de Twah and it's been one of the best additions to my Detroit dining rotation. Although the venue itself is still being updated, the food itself has been top-tier right from the start. Chef Omar is a French-trained chef, creating inspired Moroccan dishes and regularly updates his menu. He is also a James Beard award finalist, which speaks volumes to his talent. In terms of the food, I've absolutely loved everything I've ordered, from the fried chicken sandwiches (which I believe have been discontinued, but make a surprise return every now and then) to the incredible tagines. The tagines taste amazing and are surprisingly light, so you feel great after eating them. The appetizers are also fantastic, and I'm quite certain I've tried all of them at some point or another. The restaurant also hosts many events, such as the recent patio soft launch or a Valentine's day special, in which curated multi-course menus are served. If you're considering stopping by, I would 100% recommend giving this place a shot. The food is also halal, which is a huge bonus for Muslims who eat zabiha.

Offers heated outdoor dining. Enjoyed delicious Catfish and Falafel ย Bocadillos with coleslaw on fresh baked bread. Meal followed by flavorful Morracan tea.
Be the first to ReplyReally happy with our dinner here the other night.
Servers and staff were extremely knowledgeable in helping us order, and they had just switched over to a new menu. There was both indoor and outdoor (enclosed) seating. A little chilly sitting in the heated and enclosed patio due to the wind, but I'm positive it'll be a great spot to enjoy their food outside when it warms up a little. We ordered a variety of dishes and were happy with each one. In our opinion, the best were the carrots, catfish bocadillo, and the lamb tagine. We also ordered some mint and green tea which accompanied the food served excellently.
Be the first to ReplyI could write about this place for days and days, and it
I could write about this place for days and days, and it wouldn't do it justice. So I'll do my best to give you some of the highlights.Currently it's reservation only. The inside of the restaurant is VERY SMALL with just enough space for a few tables. On the other hand, they've added an outdoor(ish) area that's covered with possibly triple the seating. In the winter, it's fine? There's plenty of space heaters but I imagine the space will be nice come spring. The food tho. THE FOOD. I was really happy with every level of my experience. My friends who had been there before sang epic tales of the chicken sandwich, but sadly it's no longer offered on the menu because, I quote, it was "too powerful" (aka the demand was so high they couldn't be expected to keep up and maintain quality). But the owner did say he was planning to offer it on special occassions. The potatoes blew my mind. They were so incredibly tasty. The lamb tagine tasted fantastic, though I had a bite of my friend's fish tagine, and I might go for that next time. I had quite a few bits of my partner's apricot chicken tagine and it was so tender. For dessert, I reaaally enjoyed the tahini hot chocolate (which reminded me a lot of the kind of hot chocolate you'd dip churros into in Spain). There was also a bird's nest custard sort of dessert called the Mouhlabia. I wouldn't say that was a runaway hit with my friends. Some people liked it or didn't. It has a very mild flavor so expect it more as a palate cleanser than a sweet dessert. The owner and our server were incredibly nice and attentive. I also appreciated that the owner talked us through the menu and described the restaurant's commitment to remain accessible to locals (despite the fact that they could easily be charging far more for their amazing food). This place is fantastic. It's catapulted to one of my all time favorite places to eat when I'm in Detroit, and I'm planning to take all of my out of town friends here.Ugh. I made myself hungry again just writing this.
Be the first to ReplyWas lucky enough to get the Moroccan chicken sandwich
Was lucky enough to get the Moroccan chicken sandwich before they discontinued it for the year. The chicken was perfectly fried, juicy and crunchy. The slaw was a great compliment to the sandwich and the sauce was amazing. Overall the BEST CHICKEN SANDWICH I've every had!!

No words, best sammie ever. Got a tear in my eye, the chicken reminded me of my mom's fried chicken, ย all dolled up with drizzle and festivity. Fish sandwich also a verrrrry close second!
