Tl'dr For the price I expected more.
Visited this restaurant the other day with my friend. The service was good and the presentation of the food was amazing. Where it was lacking was taste of the food. The good: The nigiri I got was pretty good, so I don't have complaints here. The egg custard was tasty as well and had nice texture. Vegetables tempura had a good batter. The egg omelette was refreshing. Where I am less impressed was some of the sides. There was an unagi egg paste thing that just had a weird texture. The edamame paste in the starter didn't work. The soup was a bit boring. The dessert tasted like fridge. The final check came out to about 180 a person... given that overall unfortunately I was disappointed.
Be the first to ReplyMy brother and I love omakase and we decided to celebrate
My brother and I love omakase and we decided to celebrate his birthday circa March 2018 by going to a trusted friend's recommendation in SF's Mission district. Reservations are highly recommended as they are only open for a short window each night. We had front row seats at the sushi bar and had the following: *Chef's Omakase 165 ($15 increase since we last dined there in 2018) -Amuse-Bouche (the omakase begins with a small dish to complement the course menu) -Kobachi (the first appetizer dish) -Zensai (consists of 3 varieties of small dishes of appetizers served simultaneously) -Otsukuri (sashimi) -Nigiri (12 pieces of sushi to which each fish is prepared with either a slight brush of soy sauce or accompanied with a topping) -Owan (soup) -Dessert The service, food quality, and presentation were excellent. Sitting at the bar watching the sushi chefs work their magic is truly an experience. The deft hand in slicing the fish and the meticulous preparation of fresh ingredients (braided saba nigiri) are some factors that lend to its great reputation. The fish was so fresh and the chu/o-toro nigiri melted in my mouth. We thoroughly enjoyed our pricy, yet delicious meal and as always, look forward to the next one!

My friend and I came here for a dinner as my treat for his birthday. We made a reservation for an early dinner. The restaurant is pretty close to the 16th street bart station, making it pretty easy to get to by public transportation. Food: My friend picked this restaurant because he wanted to do a omakase dinner, but he wanted to make sure there would be a suitable choice of food for me. Maruya has a vegetarian omakase as well as a Shojin Ryori dinner option as an alternative to the traditional fish based omakase. I got the Shojin Ryori as that is not offered as many places. I cannot stress enough how this was an absolutely amazing decision. The Shojin Ryori dinner is 8 vegetarian (also vegan) dishes served with rice. Each dish provided was so good. I cannot wait until I can go back. My friend got the Chef's Omakase (the larger order), and he thoroughly enjoyed his meal. He was contemplating getting a smaller one, but this was for his birthday so I made him indulge. He was very happy he did so. We shared the matcha tiramisu for dessert. It was pretty good, and I would definitely order it again. It was too sweet, and you can taste the matcha. Service: Our server was the kindest man ever. He came very often to check on how we were and to refill our water/tea. We were initially going to order a sake sampler, but he suggested that he bring some samples of sake for us to try and get a bottle to share instead. This way we get to have more of a sake we enjoyed. The food came out in a good timing. My meal as it is served all at once didn't come too long after my friend started his omakase, and we finished our meal at the same time. TL;DR - amazing omakase restaurant with an excellent vegetarian option and wonderful service. Will definitely be back in the future.

Came here for Christmas Eve with my partner and it was such a memorable experience from beginning to end! We had a reservation and came in as soon as they opened for dinner and I'm glad we did, because it was quiet and besides us, there was only one other table at the other side of the restaurant - so it felt intimate. And since no one was around us, we didn't get any spoilers on what dishes we were going to get next! We ordered the chef's omakase. Bar seating is closed due to COVID (since we'd have our masks off when we eat right in front of him) but we were allowed to go closer and ask him questions with our masks on. Our chef was amazing and he sent us tamago and vegetable tempura on the house. Every dish's quality in plating and taste was amazing. I was surprised by some unfamiliar dishes too - I'd personally never seen yuzu served as an appetizer with tofu sauce and was surprised at how good it was! Our waiter was very kind and he always seemed to know just when I had finished my tea - he would bring a new cup just when I needed more! Would definitely recommend, and thanks to Maruya for such a memorable and warm experience.
Be the first to ReplyI gotta say if I compare the meal I had here pre-pandemic
I gotta say if I compare the meal I had here pre-pandemic and the meal I had recently, it would average out to 4 stars. Once an old school dark sushi spot with salary men in dark suits, it seems they lost that feel and authentic vibe. I think they also lost their chef if I believe the blogs correctly. But ok. Server sat us at a 2 top by the door near some other. Early reservation, we asked to move to a different 2 top. This took 15 minutes while he 'checked'...nobody came in for at least another 30 minutes I should add. Thankfully he did finally move us. From there service was fine...fish was fine...but I feel there are so many better places in the city to hit for sushi now a days. I'd come back here when they reopen the sushi bar because sitting at a table is no way to have an omakase meal.

Maruya is such a unique experience! Loved it and would totally come back again! We passed by this place one day and without any signage, had no clue what kind of restaurant it was. Upon checking the internet, found out it was a vegetarian omakase place and booked a reservation immediately. Coming here, I recommend the vegetarian omakase over the normal fish one because it's just so unique! All of the appetizers and flavours were very different, and using sweet potato in the sushi part of it was super flavourful. My mind was most blown by the salad option at the start with some fruits/beets/jam? I don't even know what the flavor profile was, but it worked really well. The waiter was the best - nicest dude who also teaches martial arts at a nearby studio. Overall, had a wonderful time and dining experience
Be the first to ReplyThis is a one-of-a-kind Omakase experience that challenges
This is a one-of-a-kind Omakase experience that challenges the titans of San Francisco's omakase such as Robin, Omakase, and Kasukabe, not only in taste, but in presentation. This beautiful restaurant is located on 16th street in the Mission District. Once you enter through their grand wooden doors, you are transported to an intimate space, serving some of the best Omakase in town. They have a Tsutsumi sushi course (which changes frequently) and if you are a sushi lover who likes to be surprised by excellent sushi masters, this is the menu for you. They keep you on your toes, but not only do their dishes impress your tastebuds, they also have a passion for presentation. I've taken many people to this spot, but for my mother's birthday they booked me for the last spot of the evening and we had a private tasting with the chef! We had the Omakase sushi course and the presentation was STUNNING. Every piece was magical. Soups were cradled in intricately glazed bowls, sushi was placed in an ornate treasure chest, which we opened in order to begin the course. The Chef's Omakase: Starts with a small dish to complement the course menu. Kobachi (the first appetizer dish) Zensai (3 vaqrieties of small dishes Otsukuri (sashimi) Nigiri (12 pieces of sushi to which each fish is prepared with either a slight brush of soy or with a topping) Sashimi (thinly sliced fish) Owan (soup) Dessert They had an extra ice-balloon filled with ice-cream mochi which they gave to my mother and I for her birthday! We laughed with the chefs for almost THREE HOURS, eating sashimi with our fingers (as is traditional) and created a memory I will never forget. If you want to treat yourself or a loved one to an unforgettable experience, please book a spot at Maruya! p.s. they also have a vegetarian Omakase for your veggie friends too! Create food memories, Isabelle Pinard
Be the first to ReplyWe had a wonderful dinner at Maruya.
The Tsutsumi sushi tasted as delicious as they looked. Maruya's new menu is an experience to relish. It was my first time to try Tsutsumi sushi beautifully presented on squares of seaweed and they were delicious. The clever minds at Maruya have brought the wonderful flavors of fall to fruition.
Be the first to ReplyI LOVED my recent Omakase at Maruya.
In fact, it may be one of my favorites of all time and I've had quite a few, including some at the more "famous" places. We did the $150 Omakase. For me, this was the perfect amount of food (I was starving). I left feeling satisfied but not gross. Does that make sense? I won't go to in depth into each dish, as many before me have done a great job of posting photos and descriptions. For absolute sure... the presentation of the appetizers (you have to see it to understand) comes in this one of a kind box that opens up into several compartments. Super cool! The sushi course was probably one of the most interesting and creative ones I've ever had. Loved the green tea dessert. Appreciated the bonus tempura course. Wish they had wine by the glass instead of just the bottle. $150 was a tremendous value for the quality and uniqueness of the food. Service was outstanding. I highly recommend and can't wait to come back!
