RPM Italian Chicago Reviews from The Last Year
The Branzino: It was drowning in a watery olive oil sauce
The Branzino: It was drowning in a watery olive oil sauce with the skin left on. This produced soggy fish skin, not the crisp tasteful kind that you'd expect when you leave the skin on. The fish on the other hand was dry on the inside. Even worse It was not seasoned properly, it was bland. Tasted like it had been recently thawed and had a chewy, sticky fish texture. Probably some formulaic line cooking going on in the back. For $42 give me a damn fresh fish. The salad was placed directly on top of the fish and it looked like it was vomited on top of the fish with a jarringly large cilantro leaves, which made up 25% of the salad. However it was nice of them to take the branzino off the check. The arancini, wild mushrooms & cacio e pepe were good. Prosciutto was okay. I definitely recommend the wild mushrooms and my server rightly encouraged me to order them. Our server was great, and the folks bringing our food were warm and polite. At a restaurant charging such high prices of this caliber I would expect fresh food that isn't gimmicky and a professional experience from the start.
First time I have come to this restaurant.
The Italian food was good. The atmosphere was great except for the couple making out at their table. Our waiter made some great suggestions and we all enjoyed our meal.

This restaurant was very happening on Sunday evening for dinner. Highly recommend reservations! Valet parking is available. The truffle garlic bread is delicious. For people who love prosciutto, the prosciutto service is delicious. The carbonara comes with a little bit of flair when they mix it for you tableside. The black truffle chicken vesuvio was superb and mouth wateringly flavorful, and if you love espresso, save room for the RPM Affogato.
I wanted to love everything about this restaurant but
I wanted to love everything about this restaurant but ultimately we were a bit disappointed. The toast with whipped ricotta was the best. Chicken was a bit dry but the sauce had an amazing flavor. Brussel sprouts were good but way too salty. Lobster ravioli was excellent. I think we just had an off night with the chef. Banana tiramisu was really good. We ordered the spritz and giggles drink which is a must try. Ambience of the restaurant was awesome as expected however our server had no personality and never refilled our water.
Excellent restaurant.
Gorgeous ambiance and lighting. We tried 3 pastas and they were all delicious. The pasta portions are small. Love the squid ink pasta with crab. Brussel sprouts were delicious. Our server Sara was great.
Excellent Italian food.
Always visit this location when in Chicago. Hip, cool ambience. The bar is great. Make reservations and get there early to enjoy a drink before dinner.
Hot take, RPM Italian has a better steak than most
Hot take, RPM Italian has a better steak than most steakhouses in Chicago. The house made pasta is a home run as well! We arrived to the familiar RPM vibes, low music in the background, and clean, rich, dark colors. Service was excellent, our server had great suggestions. We started with the Octopus which was perfectly cooked and super flavorful. The exterior was perfectly charred and it was not rubbery at all. A great start. We got the filet, brussel sprouts and the special tonight, lamb bolognese. The filet was a mirror of RPM Steak, perfectly seasoned and a great sear on the outside. It was an excellent steak. The brussel sprouts were next level, with amazing balsamic vinegar to compliment the perfectly fried sprouts. The lamb bolognese was amazing, the pasta was perfectly cooked and clearly house made, the lamb was full of flavor and the dish was perfectly seasoned. We finished the meal with banana tiramisu, which was next level. You get a huge piece, but i had a hard time finding the bananas, I believe it was a banana cake base, but I'm not 100% sure. Either way the tiramisu was delicious!
RPM Italian's food, atmosphere and service are outstanding
RPM Italian's food, atmosphere and service are outstanding Everything we ordered was amazing RPM Italian was even accommodating for our dietary constraints I can't wait to go back!
Great dinner with coworkers!
We had a great company team dinner here! We got a corner booth and loved taking in the atmosphere. The service was excellent, the vibe was great and our food was good. We started with the bread service and Brussels sprouts and everyone loved it. I had the carbonara and it was very good.
I went there fore a conference dinner.
The branzino with fennel was the best thing on this pre-set dinner menu. It is worth going again. I will save this for a special occasion.
Ravioli tastes like one you can buy from the traders Joe
Ravioli tastes like one you can buy from the traders Joe and boil yourself. Desert we had was some specials that tasted like cheap ice cream called bakes Alaska tasted like the cheapest ice cream from Walgreens. Teramisu awful.
I wish I could've given this place a 5/5.
I expected a 5/5 considering their sister restaurant, RPM steak was amazing. My table was placed right near the entrance at a corner table with barely any room. I can't even rate the ambiance of this place because I only experienced it from our little corner near the entrance. The waiter was nice, but the whole experience felt rushed. It felt like he was rushing to get us in and out of the restaurant and I didn't like that at all. We ordered the ricotta bread and octopus for appetizer and it was good. I've had more tender octopus but it wasn't bad. For main dishes we got rigatoni Ala vodka, spaghetti and meatballs, and eggplant parmesan. All very delicious. I'd be willing to give this place another chance since I did like the food. Hopefully I'm not feeling rushed out next time!

Has been my favorite Chicago Italian restaurant since I have been here over the past 10 years! Brussel spout salad and eggplant parmigiana is my favorites! The bread is also incredible. They also do very well with carry out and easy/fast with correct order every time for delivery services. Great ambiance and open late for the area. Never tried something I didn't love here!
Finally tried to RPM.
The service and ambiance lived up to the hype. The staff know the menu well and are able to make excellent suggestions. We started with 2 appetizers the meatballs and truffled garlic bread. They went together well and the sauce was great for dipping the bread into. We tried the chicken Parmesan and a special on the menu. The server suggested the special to me over the lobster ravioli. The portions are good sized and you won't leave hungry. We passed on dessert as we were full. Will be back

they have the best happy hour ever! get there early, because the bar fills up. after happy hour my boyfriend and i moved to a table and had one of the best waiters we've ever had. so kind and attentive, his name was quinn (ask for him if you go here)

It was embarrassing as I had strongly recommended the restaurant based on a prior dinner I have had there. The recommendation was for a business dinner for colleagues who had flown in from NYC. It was a big disappointment. The food took an hour to arrive. It had been sitting under a warming lamp for a while as it was dried up and barely warm. The vesuvio was over cooked, dry and hard to cut through but drenched in cold oil. The pastas had flavor but cold. The service (seated in the corner booth by the bar) was horrible. She was inattentive, unhappy and lame. We ordered some great bottles of wine though. For my guests, who are accustomed to incredible Italian food in NYC, this was a disappointing experience. I hope that this was a one time thing and that it reverts to being great the next time (if there is one).
RPM is always a solid option.
We were able to walk in for a quick bite before dinner. The server was attentive and down to earth. Not the best old fashioned I've had but still good by a means. Mama depandi's pomodoro is always a must!

I came here for a birthday dinner and the service was awesome. The ambiance was definitely upscale and felt very modern inside. I enjoyed the food as well, however, the portions were very small. I would eat here again but definitely expect very small portions. A person in our group ordered ravioli and was only served 4 raviolis.

The food here was incredible, there was nothing bad on the table. The meatballs, bruschetta, penne vodka, chicken vesuvio (to name a few) were all wonderful. The drinks were also very tasty, I had the paloma with clarified grapefruit which I'm still thinking about. I would certainly go back, and while I want to branch out and try different dishes, I would have a hard time straying from what I already know is so good. Our waiter did mention that you're meant to order your protein/main course and then a few pastas to share amongst the table because they're small portions - they are smaller portions than you're used to at an Italian American restaurant, but it wasn't as small as it sounded like it was going to be. Unless you're starving, you'd most likely be fine getting a pasta as your entree if you're sharing an appetizer (or stealing a few bites of someone else's main). The service was very good and our waiter was very knowledgeable and friendly. It was a bit hard to hear each other even though it wasn't packed, we seemed to have been seated in a section of the restaurant that had more families and slightly more casual guests. We were clearly a family, but all adults and dressed up as we expected it to be fancier - but we also had an early reservation, so it makes sense that there would be more young families. Not a complaint, just an observation. Would rate 4.5 if I could!

Love the lobster, clam chowder, bread, shrimp and olive oil, the service, the atmosphere! Will be back
This place is super, especially at happy hour at the bar!
This place is super, especially at happy hour at the bar! Great food, perfect priced portions, and really good drinks in a very sophisticated fun environment.
Lovely treat
The service was outstanding, and the food was unique and different. Only negative feedback was my carbonera dish was salty and under cooked. However we really enjoyed the place and would come back!
Commercial Italian. No better than Carrabas Italian Grill.
Mediocre Italian food and service. Reminded me of Carrabas style cuisine. Drinks were basic, and so was the service. This place thrives because of the name And ownership. The bar itself was a vibe however and enjjoyable. Would probably Return for a glass of wine or espresso martini.
Sommelier Experience is Terrific! Wine Director, John Slatter, is the real deal!
The Sommelier Experience at RPM Italian is phenomenal! 5 courses with 5 pairings and some extras. John Slatter, wine director, was awesome!! He couldn't haven't been better. He was super knowledgeable about the wines, the grapes, the regions they came from, and the quality and variety was excellent. The service level was top notch, one of the chefs came out twice and we were greeted with an arrival drink while waiting to be seated. I've been to RPM several times before and it's always been solid, but the Som Experience dialed things up several notches. Highly recommend trying it out.
GREAT ITALIAN BUT LOUD MUSIC
GREAT FOOD, OK PRICE THE PROBLEM IS VERY MODERN (LOUD MUSIC AND LOUD LIGHT ENVIRONMENT) BUT GOOD FOOD AND SERVICE
Disappointed at the service
Very disappointed, this restaurant came highly recommended by family members so we were excited to try when we went to Chicago. The service was horrible, we waited 45 minutes for our reservation with Very little communication from the hostess. When they were ready to take us she apologized and asked if we had any dietary restrictions because they would send over some appetizers as a way to thank us for the long wait. Those promised apps never came. The food was good but we ate at lots of great restaurants here in Chicago so service really sets it apart. This was not what we expected. Very disappointed.
Saturday Evening - Italiano
Marvelous Italian eating definitely $$$$ in a series of RPM restaurants. Note: Lighting is very dark and restaurant gets very loud as fills up! Offers a full bar w/great non alcoholic cocktails (“Waitlist”), friendly waitstaff but very busy! Starters: whipped Feta & Honey, Truffled Garlic Bread. Salads: Caesar, ask for no extra anchovy, Brussels Sprouts & Avocado. Squash Blossoms are fabulous, the Octopus is a bit smokey. Entre’s: Tagliatelle & Sweet Corn Agnolotti are wonderful. Side of crispy Brussels Sprouts a must! Ask as to whether all above can be shared or not?
10/10 Recommend RPM Italian!
I went to RPM Italian for the first time last night, and had a wonderful experience! The staff were all very welcoming, engaged, and polite. They even went out their way to accommodate my party, which I greatly appreciated. It was a wonderful atmosphere, it gave off a very high end, lovely vibe. For food we ordered Carbonara, Mama DePandi's Bucatini, Prime Beef Meatballs, & Rigatoni Alla Vodka. All of the food was exceptional, the house made pasta was fresh. We drank espresso martinis that were delicious. Our waiter was very knowledge of the menu and was very helpful. I cannot wait to go back!
Another winner from RPM!
My fiance and I visited RPM for a combination birthday + engagement celebration. PROS: Our server was excellent. He was knowledgeable of the menu, made frequent trips to the table, allowed us plenty of time to visit between courses, and offered a couple of special touches to make the night extra special. The food was excellent as well, especially the prime beef meatballs, steak tartare, ricotta & honey focaccia, and bucatini. CONS: The wait for a table was long (despite having a reservation), and the lobby/waiting area got pretty crowded with many other parties also waiting. No fault of the restaurant, but we were unfortunately seated next to a table of six ladies who all suffered from main character syndrome, and apparently wanted the world to know it that night. The overall atmosphere was more club/lounge than restaurant. Not necessarily a negative, but not a positive either for those seeking a fine dining experience. All in all, we had a great night at RPM Italian and will be back. Recommended!
Wouldn’t return
First visit, first impression too dark to see much and very loud music. Obviously popular but waited twenty minutes to be seated, the outside of what I expect when a table had been pre-booked. Wine ordered, glasses brought to the table but no sign of the wine for fifteen minutes. Appetizers very tasty, mains pasta underdone but chicken dish flavorful. On balance food was good but ambience not enjoyable, more suited to a nightclub than a restaurant and certainly not conducive to conversation.
No more
How can you read the menu in this dark ‘diskotheque’ with so much noise and no light? And a very dirty toilet…
