The food was good and overpriced however we did not
The food was good and overpriced however we did not appreciate our server trying to sell us the whole menu like a car salesman. We saw the menu beforehand and knew what we wanted to try. We wanted to order a few things after one another and he basically said no. He made a weird comment about if we wanted to "have dinner" there as if our order was too small? Weird. So if we don't order enough we're not allowed to dine in? The vibes were weird. If you are a rich white person this place will appeal to you. I don't want to hear my server mansplain everything, pitch every roll and drink on the menu, while totally being condescending if you are not interested. Just know what the vibe is when coming in. I just wanted to order food and enjoy my company and not be lectured by the server. After we did not want to do his overpriced omakase or whatever he was selling us, we basically didn't hear from him till he dropped us the bill off before we were even finished eating. I would NOT come here again. If you're trying to listen to a condescending server lecture you this is the place for you. Was not our vibe. He did not feel/ seem genuine, just tryna get your money! They want to come across as up scale but their service says otherwise in my opinion.

Everything was incredible. Highly recommend and I can't wait to come back.

Had a wonderful experience here - the sushi quality is incredible and delicious. The salmon avocado and tuna roll are both the best rolls I've had in the city by far. I will say it was very pricey. We thought we would have been full leaving a $300 dinner of nigiri and rolls but still left a little hungry if I had more to spend I would have order 6-8 pieces of nigiri, cold dish, hot dish, and a roll!
Be the first to ReplyExcellent dining experience.
This is former uchi coming through nyc. Food was funky and delicious. Perfect balance

Do the omakase, pricey but totally worth it!

Excellent dinner spot for a special occasion, but the prices are steep for the portion size. Everything is shareable. We had a tough time deciding on wines and while our server was helpful, knowledgeable, and let us sample, he was a tad pushy toward more expensive options. For food, we had the ceviche (incredible flavors, best thing on the menu), spicy tuna roll, salmon avocado roll, spicy avocado roll (surprisingly flavorful and another sleepy favorite), and ended with the grits, another great, hearty choice. The food was very high quality and fresh, but it is possible to get fish of this quality vastly cheaper around the city. You're paying for the creativity and craftsmanship of the food here. Though it was cold, I was happy to sit outside since the interior is extremely cramped. It feels more like a bar with a hallway around it than a restaurant with proper tables. I'd still highly recommend this place for the food, but watch out if you're trying to leave full.
Be the first to ReplyRosella isn't bad.
It's just vastly, vastly overpriced for semi-creative Japanese fusion. Dozens of restaurants in the city can do the same thing, and many don't charge as much as Rosella does. This is sushi/Japanese designed for rich white people who can afford to travel to Japan but still can't tell you what omakase means, and the prices--and clientele--reflect that. Why else would Rosella charge $21 for a Spicy Tuna Roll? Six average-sized pieces containing nothing particularly unique besides avocado, jalapeno and spicy mayo. Oh, I forgot, they added an herb or something in there. I didn't realize dill now cost $21. We let our server order for us, and he got us almost everything on the not-very-big menu, so I can say with confidence that we tried the best that Rosella had to offer. If you want sushi--whether traditional or fusion--this is NOT the place to go, as not only are the rolls overpriced, but also there are only three options in their "Little Roll" (re: teeny-tiny 6 pieces) category, and three options in their "Big Roll" (re: average-sized 6 pieces--this ain't futomaki), and none of them are that special. You're better off trying the cold and hot dishes. I quite enjoyed the creative Ceviche, which came with scallops and kiwi, while the Crudo with monkfish liver was great. Just be prepared to fork over $23+ each for portion sizes that would be classified as snacks at other restaurants. Also, why the hell is Laksa on a Japanese fusion menu? Rosella shines best in its desserts. The Miso Carrot Cake was moist, fragrant and beautiful to behold, while the creamy Coconut Sorbet came mixed with ginger and lemongrass with a lovely basil drizzle. Get these, whatever else you do. Bottom line: Rosella will undoubtedly appeal to hype-following foodies who blindly spend on omakases while having no actual idea what omakase means. For true sushi, Japanese and general food aficionados, the main impression it will leave is a dent in your wallet.

Special family outing, read past reviews so decided we had to try. Everything was great. Flavors amazing, service was spot-on, server incredibly knowledgeable and engaging. Definately worth the effort.

Came here with a friend and had the best time!! We sat at the sushi counter, and our chef was super nice and even added on complementary uni to the xo mazeman and an extra dessert. The chirashi was great, the fish tasted very fresh and each dish was unique and flavorful. Will definitely be back!!

If I could give this East Village spot more than 5 stars, I would. This fresh seafood is INSANE. Everything is fresh, innovative, and full of flavor. Highlights include the fatty tuna and white kimchi roll and the bluefin tuna ceviche, but really everything was amazing from the miso soup all the way to the spicy tuna roll. Service is impeccable- our server was delightful and knowledgeable. The space is small but very chic- even the restroom is on theme with parrot wallpaper as an ode to the rosella! This is about to become my most visited restaurant in nyc, and let me tell you, I eat out A LOT. Get here now people!!! Thank me later!
Be the first to ReplyOne of the best culinary experiences in the city.
The service was excellent and by doing their omakase the food became a wonderful journey, each plate designed with intent and the flavor and freshness of the ingredients fully showed through. Couldn't recommend this spot enough, the atmosphere was cozy and did not feel crowded as they've utilized the space very well. Cannot wait to go back, it's now one of my top 3 favorite restaurants in the city and favorite sushi spot!
Be the first to ReplyI didn't really know what to expect, but dining at Rosella
I didn't really know what to expect, but dining at Rosella was truly one of the best recent experiences I've had. The layout, music, and service were all impeccable. Exactly what you want for a date night or catch up dinner. There is not a bad seat in the restaurant, but sitting at the sushi bar and being able to see all of the action in the middle was so entertaining. The wine list is also so fun and unique! There are so many different options to try, and Olivia (front of house) was so kind and warm. I'd come back for the ambiance alone, but the food was mindblowing. So many unique nigiri pieces, and all tasted so so so fresh. We had the tuna/white kimchi roll, shrimp, toro, pickled mussels, scallop, and uni. Don't skip dessert!!!! The carrot cake was the best way to end the meal. I can't wait to come back. Rosella is the perfect restaurant for any occasion.
Be the first to ReplyThis was amazing.
The server was extremely knowledgeable about the menu and patient. The sushi quality is incredible and a great small and intimate atmosphere. Would definitely return. We tried most things in the menu and they were amazing. Portion size is great too in the big rolls a lot of fish!

We actually ended up dining here last minute after adding on to a reservation. The restaurant is small but they were able to accommodate us on a Friday night, the original was for 2 people and 3 of us added on. We had high top window stool seating, but didn't mind at all. We gave our waitress a budget per person and she went ahead and ordered a whole menu for us. Loved all of it! We had two of the rolls, chirashi bowl, red miso soup and a few other items. Service was wonderful. The food was prepped and came out quick. The quality of the food was excellent. Would definitely return!
Be the first to ReplySushi with sustainable seafood, all of it domestic and much
Sushi with sustainable seafood, all of it domestic and much of it from local waters, sounds cool at first, but then you might pause and think to yourself, "Hmm, maybe there's a good reason you never see Japanese joints offering raw striped bass from the Hudson River?"It's a legitimate question when a menu is charging $7-$10 per piece of nigiri. Those kinds of prices have been normalized by NYC's gilded glut of omakase temples, but they still add up to a special occasion meal for commoners like yours truly. And so, when I sit down at Rosella, I'm feeling excited about the idea of Empire State sashimi, but also a tiny bit skeptical it'll be worth the hundreds of dollars my party is about to spend.Happily, it turns out that Rosella's raison d'etre is not just unusual but also unusually delicious. The aforementioned bass is a winner, as are all of the other fishes (and shellfishes) that have found their way from Massachusetts, Maine, Louisiana and California to a small space in the East Village.Nigiri, rolls and small plates are all seasoned thoughtfully and creatively but not excessively. Funky fermented condiments, such as housemade white kimchi, make frequent appearances throughout the meal without overwhelming their sea creature companions. The abundant umami is often complemented and accentuated by light and bright elements, such as yuzu, avocado and fresh herbs.Rosella's vibe is sophisticated and professional but also unpretentious, and so with all the other plusses, I'll be making future reservations -- and doing so without the slightest hesitation.

Short review: Might be a sushi spot but their noodles are outstanding. Particularly good XO Mazeman but the Laksa was also excellent. For sushi, the Avocoho and chirashi are both good albeit pricey choices. Would also comment that the rolls were a bit loose especially for the price.I was here with two others earlier this evening to this unique Japanese spot. They are a sushi specialist with some outstanding noodles in particular and the fish here unlike most places is local so the prices are to an extent reduced compared to other fancy spots. The bar seating is split between a sushi bar and alcohol and there are perhaps 25-30 seats here and reservations are a necessity. We split a bunch of dishes and left reasonably full having spent $80 each but all of us are gluttons so you could probably get away with less especially alone. To drink I had the Kato Sake Works Junmai Nigori from a Brooklyn based sakegura/sake brewery which was $20 a glass for a generous pour. The friendly bartender gave a sample of another sake which was $25 and that was outstanding as well.Large Rolls: The Bagels-On-Hudson consisting of Smoked Steelhead, Dill Cream Cheese, Tamago, and Cucumber was $18. The steelhead trout was of high quality and so was the tamago/egg. The cream cheese had some dill flavor but I found it a bit strong. Perhaps a bit more tamago would be. This was alright. The Avocoho with Coho Salmon, Avocado, Fresno Chili, and Shiso was better at $16. The fresno chilies added a wonderful sourness which balanced out the avocado and fresh fish. Would recommend.Cold Dishes:The Crudo Blanco consisted of Bay Scallops, Fennel, Turnips, and Trout Roe $25. This was tasty though I think a bit more trout roe would be nice. The turnips added some food texture. This was fine also. The Ceviche with Coho Salmon, Coconut Milk, Persimmon, and Corn Nuts for $20 was even better. The coconut milk base was excellent and the persimmon was a tasty novelty. This was essentially a Peruvian style ceviche but elevated and I would recommend it.The Chirashi with Sushi Rice, Different Exotic Fishes, Pickles, Tamago, and Avocado for $39 was pricey but outstanding. The fish consisted of more coho salmon, tuna, blue fin, and something else. The tamago in there was very tasty and the fish was fresh as per every other dish. Very tasty though there is a lot more rice than fish.Noodles (Best Part:)The XO Mazeman (or really Mazemen) is the best dish here. This dish consisting of Spicy Preserved Shellfish Sauce, Country Ham, and Parmesan for $19 or in our case $34 with a uni supplement had a wonderful spice and umami flavor. I believe the main flavors of their outstanding XO sauce come from dried scallops/conpoy and there were some big pieces. Highly worth it with or without the uni.The Laksa with Spicy Shrimp & Chicken Broth, Rice Noodles, and Smoked Eel for $26 was also tasty. As with another table, they split this dish into different bowls which was a nice touch. I'm unsure of the size of the original bowl but the flavors were nice. There was a large piece of maitake mushroom on top and I believe the fish in there was mackerel and not eel and it worked well. I prefer egg noodles like the ones used in the mazeman but the rice noodles were good also. The only dessert we tried was the Miso Carrot Cake with Mandarin Marmalade, and Cream Cheese Frosting for $13. The carrot cake had a nice texture and the marmalade was very tasty. The frosting done backwards as a bottom layer had some pleasant tartness. The only issue is that they are listing it as with miso and I couldn't taste it. Perfectly solid dessert to end the meal. The food here was tasty and the people were nice. A couple mssteps here and there but the noodles in particular were excellent. They appear to be expanding and I hope there's noodles at their new location also. Wouldn't be surprised if they have a star by next year.

Went back a year later and am so happy to say it was even better than I remember. The ambiance is so special- intimate and chill- and the staff is excellent. The sushi pieces were my favorite, especially the smoked steelhead trout, smoked uni, bluefin tuna, and striped bass. I also loved the spicy avocado roll and fatty tuna and white kimchi roll. The oyster sushi and crudo blanco (bay scallops, fennel, turnips, trout roe) were also good, but didn't crack the top tier. The spicy tuna roll and ceviche (coho salmon, coconut milk, persimmon, corn nuts) were the group's least favorite, and they were still incredible! Finally, the coconut sorbet with basil oil and salt were the surprise of the night. Totally delicious.

. damn was it a special night. The energy was just refreshing. My new "House of Small Wonder" spot-- aka I'll make it a priority to enjoy myself here anytime I'm back in the city visiting buddies or family. Recommended by a friend.. didn't look into it at all after seeing 5 stars and just let the night go where it went. Went into it with no expectations, no research etc. and had an experience you only truly get when you feel at home somewhere. Cute as* spot with a homie feel to it. Shea and Sujin were awesome.. from the team here, to our sake, the food, atmosphere and aesthetics and even my wooden spoon.. I was in hog heaven just enjoying the moment with my sister, lil cousin and my good friend. Fire night, fire time and the food f**cin blew us away with every dish and every different flavor etc. Had about a 2+ hr dinner just enjoying the Present Moment Slowly and the whole vibe / energy was the ideal dinner to experience before leaving NYC for SD.

.. what you'll see reflects the beauty and tastiness of the food. Bright, colorful, fresh, flavorful... we say for omakase for my sis bday. The chefs spoke with us about their food btwn their sharp focus on making each meal. All the food is sourced within the US, spiky lobster from FL, uni from from Santa Barbara, tuna from SC... and it was all good. Be aware, their sushi rice is slightly uses little more vinegar. The layout is open with the kitchen in the cebter of the restaurant. If you can get a rez, I highly recommend this experience.

I got a late reservation and dinner was worth the wait! Food and service was superb despite the bar seating. I appreciate that the bar was not so packed and you didn't feel rushed so we had a great dining experience. We had a few tasting of wines including an orange wine. The guy at the bar knew his wines and sake; he made a good recommendation based on our preferences with plenty of tastings. I tasted the ceviche and chirashi which I heard was good as there was not much sharing ;) For me, I enjoyed ordering a sampling of nigiris while enjoying a bottle of sake. My favorites were the fatty tuna, scallops, smoked steelhead trout, and surprisingly Spanish mackerel. After my first round of nigiri, I began to just trust what was recommended so the dinner eventually turned into an omakase like experience without the sushi bullying ;) Chef Miller has a fresh take on using domestic species with an emphasis on sustainability. Plus, he uses fresh wasabi and a sauce that he makes with sake, mirin and dashi which really enhances the taste of the sushi!

I've been craving sushi for a while so when I found this place on yelp and noticed that it had perfect reviews, I knew I had to try it. I was so hungry in the moment that I forgot what each roll was called but I truly enjoyed every bite. Great service and yummy food. I'll def come back when I'm in the nyc!

Rosella is wonderful! From the energetic super friendly welcome to the tour of their unusual wine selection. And then the food, as advertised, all sustainably sourced fish but really interesting and well presented. It is not, and nor so far as I can tell, does it claim to be, a traditional Omakase place. If you love raw fish go there roll with it and have fun! By the way the bill when it comes is very reasonable. We can't wait to go back.
