Rude and abusive - avoid at all costs
Dreadful. We booked by phone from the UK for our last celebratory lunch on the Amalfi coast. When we arrived (early), they said sorry no reservation despite us showing confirmation of the phone call we made to their number. That wouldn’t by itself have been a problem but the head person then became so rude and defensive claiming that my Italian bilingual wife, whom he called “Scarlett Johanssn”, was delusional and that she must have been ”talking to their answering phone”! What bollocks. Unbelievable and totally unacceptable service. In fact, the most rude, vulgar and disgraceful service I have received anywhere in the world, and I have been most places. Avoid!! By contrast, Treville next door were fantastic. Found us a place despite being fully booked. Service, food and wine were wonderful. I know where I will go next time.

I was really excited for this day as it came highly recommended by someone very close to me. The day started as we tried to wait for the boat at Spiagga grande. It took 40 minutes even though the attendant said the da adolfo boats come every 20 mins. When we finally arrived we were under the impression that beach chairs were complimentary with reservation. We arrived (a big group) and there were no chairs left. No where to put our stuff etc. Then we went to check in and the staff couldn’t find our reservation and was so rude to us even though we had a written confirmation. We put them on the phone with our hotel concierge and ultimately what I believe is that they realized they messed up but didn’t want to admit it so instead tried to turn it on us and said “we worked it out for you say thank you.” Ridiculous that we were thanking them for letting us sit even though we had a reservation we made over a month ago. Now it’s time for the meal, the food was good and views were great. Solid 8/10 but truly not worth the headache and utterly rude and obnoxious staff. Some staff were so rude they even made some of us want to cry. They said to my sister “we don’t have all day” when she was giving them her order and much more but don’t want to make this too long. They said they are understaffed and really busy but there is no excuse to treat guests this poorly. FINALLY it’s time to go back so we go to take the boat and they said it won’t leave for another hour. Mind you, the ride from the restaurant to the main beach is FIVE MINUTES but they refused and didn’t even disclose why. Then we begged a water taxi to take us which should only cost 30 euros max and he charged us 10 euros each so almost 130 to go 5 minutes. For anyone deciding whether to come here please reconsider. We had a great day in positano but this was unnecessary stress in one of the most beautiful places in the world.

I’m so happy for all the people that had a wonderful time at Da Adolfo, I really wish I was one of them as I had been looking forward to this experience for so long especially being in lockdown in NZ. There was obviously a bit of confusion about our booking as we turned up at 10:30am and our hotel (Palazzo Avino) had only made a reservation for lunch and not the deck chairs. I said ok here’s the email I have which says deck chairs and lunch, however I can appreciate he may have made a mistake… what can we do to solve? Reluctantly we were given some deck chairs and made to feel quite embarrassed like dumb tourists when it was a mistake from our concierge (the booking was made 1 mint earlier). We also other people turn up without reservation on the boat an hour, 2 hrs later and then they were given chairs without being made to feel stupid. Anyway, that wasn’t the worst of it unfortunately. They set the tables in regards to who shows up, so our table was there clearly with a note saying 3 however there was only 2 settings and seats. We were then given a pretty rackety chair that was very uncomfortable, and for someone that booked well in advance it was pretty disappointing as everyone else had proper tables. Massive commotion about kindly requesting a proper chair as the whole experience is the lunch. The son asked my mum if she wanted to eat her food off the ground, and pulled faces behind her back. I absolutely love a bit of banter and a waiter that is cheeky, even a little bit of arrogance is ok if they have pizazz.. but this was plain demoralising I actually couldn’t believe it came out of his mouth. It’s not acceptable under any circumstance. I personally after this experience won’t be coming back. They can’t handle the jandal after their newfound popularity off instagram which is a real shame. Time to find true next untouched Da Adolfo with staff that make your day special. The food is nice but not sure it’s the sort of place you want to go if you want a pleasant stress free day, especially while you are in holiday.
Be the first to ReplyBella Italia pura!
Welcomed by the Sergio the owner and waited on by Beppe the funnest of waiters, my wife and I simply had the most wonderful afternoon enjoying the sublime and traditional lunch menu offerings (take note of the specials and don’t miss the mussels) along with delicious glasses of Rosé and Aperol Spritzes, did not put us out of pocket which was quite unexpected and appreciated. The crowd is a mix of locals and summering tourists and you never know who may be seated next to you (we had a former US ambassador and his wife at the table next to us). The place is small and packed to the gills. Yes, it’s not the easiest of places to get a table in high season, but tenacity and perseverance is rewarded. If you don’t bring attitude you won’t get attitude, so bring your best smile and enjoy because you will get back what you give…..especially if you go with the flow of this lovely lively lunch oasis!

Fantastic day of sun, swimming, great food and fun. Make sure you book ahead as we did ( one month and keep trying by phone)
Be the first to ReplyBeautiful place and excellent food!
I have been a frequenter of Da Adolfo for many years. The quality of the food and wine selection is at the top on the coast. Thank you Sergio and the staff for a great meal and service!
Be the first to ReplyRidiculous booking system
This place is a joke. They don’t answer the phone for 6months + then if you show up at the dock to go on the day they just yell “reservation only!” and don’t allow you onto the water taxi. Perhaps if they bothered to answer the phone so that people could book in advance they’d have a better business (oh and they don’t take email bookings, just the mystery phone that they never answer). Don’t waste your time trying to book this place, go to another beach club they’re all broadly comparable.
Be the first to ReplyBad EXP. better the neighbouring restaurant
Scostumatezza incredibile e posto molto Sporco ! I found the place very dirty - fingers in the dishes - I invite everyone to go around the kitchen so you don't run out of what you are eating. INCREDIBLE RUDENESS

The whole fuss of getting to Adolfo is a detriment to the good food they serve. It is the Berghain of restaurants. After getting to the beach, we were repeatedly turned down for a table. I sent my boyfriend to try and get our reservation and he came back all sweaty… I wish I could take the hanging flying appendage that’s on the mountain and stick it to Adolfo! A stressful lunch governed by chaotic men. The tuna tartar was delicious, however it would have been better if I could have eaten it in a decent restaurant. Overall, a one star experience saved by some friarielli.
Be the first to ReplyWhat an amazing experience!
This place is wonderful and was a highlight of our trip to the Amalfi Coast. it isn't easy to get to - the boat service when we went was 1pm or make your own way. We had to do the latter having been let down by a taxi that dropped us off seemingly at the top of a mountain and we had to climb down to Positano! 6 rather weary ladies then bribed another restaurant to take us to Da Adolfo in their boat. And it was worth every one of the millions of steps we had climbed down to get to the seafront. Food was amazing (mozzarella on lemon leaves was to die for), best Tiramisu ever, wine was wonderfully cold. It was all amazing. Great ambience. Even though our party of 12 were (as was pointed out) "one hour and a half and one day late" (the one day was because the restaurant had told us not to come on the original day, the hour and a half was down to us!) they quickly accommodated our party and brought lots of food and drink. It is just wonderful. Swimming in the sea until the last boat back to Positano was gorgeous. Love this place.

Me, my husband, 2 young daughters & friends stood in the midday sun waiting for an hour+ to get one of their badly organised boats (they were letting anyone and everyone on first who didn’t even have reservations there). When we arrived for our 2pm meal half an hour early, the tiny beach and restaurant were rammed with nowhere to sit but on the rocks, in partial shade until our table was ready. It was scorching 🥵 so we waited in the bar area stoop up, but thankfully in the shade for our table. We waited for a table for over 1 hour. There were people sat at theirs having finished their meals, ordering nothing, eating and drinking nothing and they weren’t asked to leave their table for us to sit down. Bearing in mind we had 2 young ish children with us…our party of six was eventually seated at 3.30pm on to a table of 4. They had reserved a number of tables for some locals whom they sat before us with a party of 11+. When I mentioned to the owner about a table of 6 that had become available, I was barked at and told not to do his job for him. As other guests have mentioned, he was incredibly unpleasant, to the point of disgusting! When the food arrived, it definitely wasn’t worth the wait, it was average at best. We had been spoilt with amazing food in the area and this was the equivalent of a standard cafe. This was our last day in Positano and what a disappointment. Save your money and your time and have a really good meal elsewhere with an owner who appreciates your custom. I would not recommend this place.
Be the first to ReplyBeautiful beach and restaurant but beware!
What would have been a perfectly wonderful day was spoilt by the extremely rude, obnoxious and arrogant owner/manger. As we beached and tried to find our way around he made it very clear that we were privileged to be at his beach/bar/restaurant. That said thank goodness we never had to deal with the man again! However, once our rage had subsided we had a very pleasant day - the venue including lunch very good , food ( mussel soup highly recommended) and the service and friendliness of the staff was fantastic! So sad how a single nasty individual goes to such lengths to make things unpleasant!
Be the first to ReplyIf you enjoy being stranded with rude waitstaff on a horrible beach, this place is for you!
This place is an absolute nightmare! My wife and I took their boat from Positano for lunch. When we arrived, the kitchen was closed, the wait staff was rude, and there was nothing for us to eat. We hung around for about an hour waiting for the restaurant to start serving food, but we were never able to be served. When we tried to get back on the boat to return to Positano, it would not let us back on the boat. Apparently this is only a one-way ticket and they scam you by stranding you in the smallest cove possible and force you to spend your time and money there all day. On top of that, the beach is very small and covered with beach chairs so there is nowhere to really hang out unless you wanna spend €1 million. If this sounds like a great day to you then this is your place. Otherwise, consider yourself warned!
Be the first to ReplyLittle gem!
Da Adolfo is a little gem! We were staying nearby so walked down LOTS of steps to get there (most people arrived by boat). The people in the restaurant also organise the sunbeds so we made a full day of it. Food was excellent and reasonably priced and the staff were real characters. Highly recommend.
Be the first to Replyunique private beach
We had a great day at Da Adolfo. You take a boat from the main pier in Positano to the private beach club. We had a great meal here. It is not fancy, but very unique. Have the hotel call to get a reservation.
Be the first to ReplyA must visit!
This place is a must visit if you can manage to get a reservation! My advice is to ask your hotel concierge and don't miss the sangria or fresh fish.
