Restaurant at The Getty Center Los Angeles Reviews from The Last Year

I took a vacation day on Friday, and on a pre-planned whim
I took a vacation day on Friday, and on a pre-planned whim I decided to hit the Getty with a friend- William. It was surprising (to a manageable extent) that my internal-hunger clock still ticked to the schedule of my workplace meal times. I imagined that I could enjoy the Getty for a few hours and then have an early dinner. Too tie me over, for the early dinner William and I bought chips at a gas station before coming to the Getty. These were housed in a string backpack. But right around my lunch time, my stomach demanded food. And until I fed myself, my mood would be funky and foul. We went to the Restaurant and the host informed us that the wait time- for those without a reservation- would be thirty minutes. Yikes--- I would have to endure my hunger for longer, but I decided to wait for the meal. I could have gone to the downstair cafe or I could have grabbed something at a coffee cart but on a vacation day where I visited the Getty ( a Palace in the Sky) I needed to have a sit down lunch at a place that had the sza sza tsu of dining that is fine. I waited for about 15 minutes than impatiently hovered around the glass doors of the Restaurant. Then I went in. The staff was able to sit me, 20 minutes in. William and I have an implicit agreement-- he goes with my flow. So when we got to the table he allowed me to decide where we would both sit--- I could face the the mountains or I could face the people sea. I thought, and decided to take the seat that allowed me to people watch. I informed our server that we were in a bit of a rush since we wanted to catch a 2:30 tour. It was like 140. We had about 50 minutes to dine, pay, and dash- across a courtyard. She said that the kitchen was backed up so they might not be able to accommodate the request. In our 20ish minute wait for a seat, William and I had seen the menu and each decided what we wanted. We placed the order immediately after she announced the possible inability to feed us lunch with in a 50 minute window of time. After she left, I explained to William that if they took more than 20 minutes to bring us our lunch plates, then in general they had a problem. I mean most people have like an hour for lunch. I can go have lunch with a colleague, enjoy the food, have time to go to and fro, so I am not sure why 50 minutes would present a barrier to success. I guess she just had to warn me. What was the COVID mantra? Out of an abundance of caution, they informed me that my lunch would not be finished in 50 minutes. Relax dear reader, everything went just fine. I made it to my 230 tour and did not rush. William had fried crab. I never had this dish before, and it was a marvel to enjoy. The crab taste was present and strong, yet it was fried to a delicate crisp. I had the grain bowl with salmon. I felt I was healthy, and I felt like I did not miss out on the luxury of good food. My bowl had grapes, and cheese, and some other stuff that added depth and complexity to my meal. Both dishes were solid, a joy to withstand, and added to the spectacle of my vacation day. They have side breads. Those were good too-- I especially like the wheat and grain one. At the end of the meal, I asked william to take a bag of chips out from the string bag. I opened them and placed some triangle chips on a plate. He and I snacked as a post-meal indulgence. I love me. I have reached a time in my life where I do not care if someone does not judge me for eating chips at a restauarant. I also picked up the bowl and scooped all its contents into my mouth. I explained to him that there should be no greater joy to a chef than seeing a patron almost lick a plate clean. The chips on a plate, the lapping of the plate, all of these signs show me that I care not of what others think, for I am there to enjoy my meal in my own way and that is the cardinal rule of eating for pleasure at a dining experience. Meaning, I ate with care abandoned. Great job with this place! It was around 80 dollars with a 20 percent tip. So factored that in, into your decision making process. Remember, he and I had only one main dish. No apps. no desserts, no booze. So the price tag is not for the faint of heart. But then again, neither are the heights of the Getty.

Walked in to the restaurant after a lovely day at Getty Center! Highly recommend Food, service and ambience were all super!! The art inside matches my taste too :) And if the desserts are sexy.. you get a five Thank you
I'm sorry but this is not a great restaurant.
At these prices I don't expect to have our empty appetizer plates and platters sit at the edge of our table for the entire meal, nor do I expect to have our water glasses filled so shoddily that water spilled over without any attempt to clean it up. Our waitress took much too long to do... well, just about everything. She started out great by taking our drinks and appetizer order but then everything fell apart from there. The room was not full so I can't really understand why she was so slow. I watched her throughout our stay and she took her time lazily walking everywhere like she had all the time in the world. I just don't get it. We waited an unreasonable amount of time getting anything from her. I don't really know what she was doing because the busboys brought our meals and did everything else. Aside from taking out order and bringing the bill she was non existent throughout our stay. Toward the end of our meal she said, "I'm only asking because I see the credit cards on your table but I'm assuming you don't want desert?" So she saw the credit cards but the rest of the things on our table that should have been cleared away long ago she couldn't see? I was so looking forward to this meal but the food was only above average and DEFINITELY not worth the high prices.

My husband and I decided on a whim to head into The Restaurant at The Getty for brunch on a Sunday visit to the museum. We had made no reservations and were pleasantly surprised that they were able to accommodate us despite our lack of said reservations. Once seated, we proceeded to have the loveliest experience overall. The waitstaff were incredibly attentive to our needs and went above and beyond to make our entire meal a memorable experience. I enjoyed the 6-hour short rib hash which was incredibly tender and flavorful! My husband chose the mushroom frittata with salad and it was equally delicious. And I am not a huge mushroom fan, so to say that is truly saying something. We ended the meal by sharing a Monte Cristo coffee drink which was pretty spectacular, but definitely needed to be shared. The views from the restaurant were a bonus-you can see the hills and on a clear day all the way to the ocean from there. And our waiter shared that they have a high tea experience that we are hoping to come back and experience as well. All in all, dining at The Restaurant elevated our whole afternoon at The Getty which is pretty outstanding to begin with and one I try to recommend to any out of town visitors. We will certainly be back again soon to enjoy another meal!

I started off with a nice glass of Chardonnay from Liquid Farms, an amazing winery from Los Olivos. I ordered the Black Truffle pasta with an add on of chicken. The portion size was ok, but with adding the chicken I thought there should have been more of it and maybe bigger in size. Our server was great, he attended to our every need. We were seated at the edge with an amazing view. Wish I had came earlier to enjoy more of Getty.
A simply delightful experience.
I've enjoyed a cheese and white wine tasting here after seeing the Getty Center's wonderful exhibits. Paired with a great view and spacious atmosphere, The Restaurant at the Getty Center's menu offering of pan-seared scallops and Mary's chicken entrée followed by a carefully crafted dessert has been my favorite meal so far. Truly, a visit to the restaurant helps end a well-rounded trip to the J Paul Getty museum. I will surely make a return. Thank you!
The Getty Center itself is so beautiful, and we really
The Getty Center itself is so beautiful, and we really enjoy coming here. Our experience at the restaurant has been mixed. On this most recent visit, we really just stopped by for drinks and desserts before going to the museum. To get to the museum and restaurant, you park down the hill, and a tram takes you up to the location. It is very easy to navigate. When we arrived, we were seated quickly, and the hostess was friendly. The menu changes and can again be hit or miss. The plating comes out like a fine-dining restaurant, but some of the dishes fall short of that standard. None of the menus, in my opinion, is particularly innovative, but I think that it is intentional with a lot of standards like Cobb salads, pasta with truffles, and duck with parsnip. We recently tried "The Banana" dessert, which is a Banana cake with Banana banoffee crémeux and chocolate-hazelnut praline. It was good, and I appreciated the effort that went into the presentation. We also ordered Grasshoppers, which were fun to see on the Menu, and a cute throw-back drink, especially around the holidays. My main issue was the service. When our server was there, he was great, but our dessert came out before the drinks, and we had to flag down a different server for another round. We also had to wait about 20 minutes after we were finished to get our check. Food, drinks, ambiance, etc. are, of course, important, but for me, bad service is just the worst, and I feel that if you are putting out white-linen, fine dining aesthetics, you should have service that matches. The environment is what makes this restaurant; the rest depends on what you are looking for.

The food was excellent! Not very many restaurants offer octopus dishes, so this was a treat! The staff was attentive and the vibe was on the casual side, but definitely a lovely spot to relax and enjoy a nice meal.

Nicely executed visually appealing dishes with lots of flavor. Limited options but even our picky eater was able to maneuver. (There are two options specifically for kids - just ask) Good portions. Service and ambiance were very good. Highly recommend if you're seeking a more upscale dining option and variety of flavors.
