Be the first to ReplyBest udon I've had in a long time.
The broth is so clean and the noodles are extremely chewy. The portion sizes are huge. The seating area inside is a bit tight but they now have outdoor seating for the summer!

Simply amazing! The noodles are top-tier, and the tempura was crispy and fresh. One of my best udon experiences so far. I would definitely go back for the cold udon (zaru) again.

Really great udon!!! We luckily were able to get a table for dinner without having to wait, so I was excited for that! We started off with a full order (10 pieces) of the karaage. In hindsight, we would have been ok with a half order (6pieces). It was good, but it wasn't the best I've had. Hubby got the wagyu udon which was very very good! Would def recommend this one! I got the Kani ankake. It was snow crab in thick egg soup. Don't order this one if you aren't a fan of thick egg soup, but it's def a great option if you enjoy! Overall, service was good and the ambiance was cozy like most NYC restaurants. Def worth checking out if you enjoy udon.

Ambiance (4/5): The inside nicely lit with a clean Asian decor. It is very tight with approx capacity of 20. However the outdoor dining is almost double the inside. We sat outside and (as expected) decorations were a bit sparse. The noise levels were moderate. Service (5/5): It is a walk-in only. We waited about 20 min before getting seated at 6:45ish. The staff checked in on us often and our glasses were regularly refilled. Our food came pretty quickly. Niku (3/5): the broth is unbelievably umami! The portion of meat was meager and felt like there was more tendon and tripe than it was short rib. I was expecting a bit more for the $26 price point. If you ask for the spicy oil on the side, there's much less than if you ordered the spicy version. Sesame Apricot (3/5): it was a beautiful presentation but the taste didn't blow me away. There were hints of the sesame in the cake layer and then added sweetness from the bottom layer of apricot. It's a great dessert to split amongst 2. Yuzu Sake (5/5): we had 2 pours each between 3 with the middle size option (400c).

Visited Raku based on some good reviews and it did not disappoint! The place has a nice setting with options to sit inside or outside. We didn't have a reservation but were seated quickly. The service was efficient and friendly. We started with pork gyoza and tempura brussels sprouts. Both dishes were well-prepared; the gyoza was crispy on the outside, and the brussels sprouts were a nice change from the usual appetizers. For the main course, I had udon in dashi broth, which was flavorful and comforting. Overall, the meal was enjoyable without feeling rushed, thanks to the good pacing by the staff. I recommend Raku for anyone looking for a reliable and satisfying dining experience. I'm looking forward to going back to try other dishes!

(Overall: A) - The East Village location may have a slightly different menu from the SoHo location from what I've heard, but their thoughtfully developed broth and fresh tender udon continue to be a draw. The service is also reasonable and the atmosphere has the basic necessities for comfort including an outdoor patio with heaters, umbrellas for the rain, and a clean bathroom. Would recommend. (Niku Udon: A) - This udon bowl is paired with an assortment of beef cuts that are braised to tenderness. I love to deep earthy development in the broth of the soup to pair with their fresh udon noodles. The only thing I would improve about this bowl is to give more of the delicious meat and vegetable, but otherwise its beautifully executed. -- Food: +1 Presentation: +1 Price: E Atmosphere: E Service: E Menu: +2 Overall: +4 A Insta/Beli: @amei_eats
Be the first to ReplyAbsolutely top-level udon/japanese restaurant.
Consistently jam-packed and for good reason. Udon is among the best in the city. Staff is gracious and professional and handle the ever-present lines quickly and efficiently. I make the trek down there from the Upper East Side once a week. it's worth it.

I went to this ramen place in Manhattan that was really nice. The noodles were chewy and the broth had a lot of flavor, which made it stand out. It's a bit small but they have some outdoor seating. The staff recommended the Niku Udon, which was pretty good. The place gets busy, but the service is fast, making it a great spot for lunch.

really great udon! my favorite thing was the texture of the noodles. super bouncy and the soup was flavorful as well. i didn't like the texture of the crab tho it tasted very dry and almost grainy. we also ordered the chicken and gyoza appetizers which were great as well. it's a small place so not much seating area inside but it's cozy and has a nice vibe. good for a dinner date with a friend or parter and workers are attentive as well

We were in NYC for vacation and a local recommended that we try this restaurant. So glad she told us about it ahead of time so that I could get a reservation. This place was packed and even with a reservation you still had to wait a bit but so worth it. Between the four of us we tried various udon bowls and dishes. Everything was delicious and good service. I will definitely return on our next trip to NYC.
Be the first to ReplyUdon and broth here is spectacular.
Simply delicious! Such a cute and quaint little spot. Def worth waiting 30 min in line for!

Hubs was feeling adventurous and walked to Raku to check out the wait time on a Sunday evening. He was quoted 30 minutes so I walked on over to him mid-way prior to us getting our table. We sat indoors which was quite the tight fit but it worked out. We ordered the following for starters: + Fried Chicken: these were a little spicy. Hubs quite enjoyed this + Pork Gyoza: basic but delicious For the main course, I ordered the Sansai which came with "mountain vegetables" and maitake mushroom tempura. The mushroom tempura was out of this world. It was super flavorful and meaty for what was a vegetable udon dish. I also ordered the Shrimp Tempura to eat on the side which was perfectly fried. It was a must have. The service was slightly non-existent. Once you order, the staff doesn't quite check up on you after unless you're flagging them down to get the check. Nonetheless, the meal was delightful.

Wonderful, especially if you're lucky enough to get a chance to sit outside. Like all downtown restaurants, there is a lot of noise but this isn't from the thumping "music ". The surfaces are hard and people are having a good time with lots of conversations. Outside is calm and the service is great.

Order 2 udon and 2 small dishes Udon is no brainier, go try them, can't go wrong with them The tempura is even better than the udon However, the fish liver is just tasteless. Not worth to try save your money and order one more tempura

Delicious udon in East Village! Came here for lunch with a party of 3 and we were seated right away at the outdoor patio. The service was quick and friendly! I ordered the Toriten Udon, which is a hot udon that comes with four good-sized pieces of fried chicken. The soup was light and refreshing! Definitely would be a good hangover meal after a long night out. The noodles had a nice bit to them and they give you a generous portion of them. I also liked there were some veggies included, which helped offset the heaviness of the noodles and chicken. All in all, a solid udon spot that I'd recommend!
Be the first to ReplyTremendous.
The broth in the vegetarian udon has outstanding depth & flavor. The noodles and chilli oil are fresh and delicious. I do wish the udon had more vegetables, but nonetheless 5 out of 5 stars, without question

Got the chance to try this cozy, small restaurant in East Village. The overall restaurant space is small so we had to wait 20-30 minutes to seat two people on a Thursday evening, so try to come here during off-peak hours! Overall the food is pretty decent, but very expensive and overpriced. The agedashi tofu was interesting and different but felt a bit overpriced for what it was. I tried one of their more popular dishes in the Niku Udon and though I will always enjoy a belly filled with warm broth, I wasn't as satisfied as I thought I would be. I feel like the dish could've had a bit more Udon and that the broth could have been spicier and more flavorful. The dish itself you're nearly paying $30 and I still was a little hungry afterwards. Still a decent experience overall, however.

I first came to Raku years ago and remembered it tasting really good. We decided to check it out again since we were in the area and craving udon. There wasn't much of a wait and we didn't have a reservation either (though I'm not sure if they even take reservation's). The inside is pretty small with one bathroom. There's more outdoor seating than indoor seats. We were seated outside which was a little cramped and a little scary right by the road. Service was attentive and fast. We ordered the Niku udon and a duck udon. I enjoyed the Niku udon more. The soup flavor was light but flavorful and the udon noodles were chewy. I wonder if they make their own udon noodles because the shape is a little different, the ends flare out like a trapezoid. The Niku udon didn't have as much meat as I would've liked. The duck udon was even lighter. Oh, they give these frozen grapes as a little treat with your check. Overall: I remembered it being better. It was still good but I wasn't that impressed and I also felt like the prices are a little expensive. I do feel like the Niku udon is a little overpriced.
Be the first to ReplySleek, authentic and unassuming.
Great food and ambience.
Be the first to ReplyThere was already a short line before it opened on Sunday.
As a solo diner, I was seated at their counter seats. There were small cloth baskets on the floor for you to store your belongings as it's a pretty tight space. The menu is accessed via the QR code on the table. I ordered the curry udon with washugyu. It was a short wait before I had a hot bowl of udon in front of me. This was the first time I had udon that was so chewy, it was akin to chewing on tapioca pearls which was an interesting experience. All in all, it was a very hearty bowl of curry udon. The spice was very mild despite the pepper sign next to this item on the menu. The soup was thick but thin enough to not become like sauce. They servee one frozen grape along with the receipt which I thought was a cute touch. I'll definitely be back to try some of their appetizers! The bathroom is a bit dim when there's not sunlight beaming through the small window but it was clean and well kept. It makes sense why there's a line for this place as the indoor dining space can probably fit at most 20-30 people. There's also outdoor seating as well.
Be the first to ReplyThe food was fine but the wait was heinous.
I ordered the ebitan udon and the soup had a deep, clear flavor to it. The flavor of the soup wasn't fully reliant upon salt so the broth was solid. However, as someone who isn't a fan of noodle heavy dishes, I found the three toppings to go with the bowl to be rather unfulfilling. I would like to note that the udon noodles were quite delicious! Unlike the frozen noodles you get at the grocery, they were slightly wider and flatter and didn't congeal. They were able soak up the flavor of the soup. I would also consider the portion to be filling.I was seated at the bar and the bartender (?) was super friendly and charming! The interior of the restaurant is quite cozy and I found the ambiance quite fitting to the restaurant.Personally, this is not a place I would come back too because I prefer more diverse dishes (udon is plain dish imho to begin w) but there was nothing inherently wrong with the restaurant or food.Tldr: this is a good spot for udon fans that like to fill up on broth. Wouldn't strongly recommend to individuals that like more than soup and noodles in their dish for over $20.

Be the first to ReplyWent back and better this time! Arrived on a Sunday
Went back and better this time! Arrived on a Sunday afternoon as party of 3 and immediately we got a table outside with heating inside. As warm as it was in there, it wasn't stuffy but I still would have preferred the heater above to be turned off since it wasn't that cold then. I think the outdoor seating is better than indoor unless it's been revamped since it feels more spacious and brighter. Got the karaage which I remembered salivating for many years ago but it doesn't hit the same no more. Still juicy and quite hot but the outside was a little dry. The udon is still very, very delicious and worth trying out! I also enjoyed dipping the tempera into the broth. As usual, cash only and they give complimentary frozen grapes at the end of meal but it's way too cold.
Be the first to ReplyWaitress was argumentative about ordering an extra side
Waitress was argumentative about ordering an extra side plate of daikon radish.I'm totally okay with paying for it may need be but first said she was a certain price. On the receipt, it was more. I asked why does the price not reflect her words and she says prices are always changing because of Covid, and she wasn't aware.Okay I understand, but you told me a certain price and now it isn't. She says I'll take it off the tab. I thanked her and when she printed the new check, she was still talking about inflation and the rising costs of things. Woman I do not care. You told me a certain price and then it was another. Then you said you weren't aware of the change in costs. That sounds like blatant lying right there. An apology would have sufficed.Raku is tasty, and some of the more decent udon I've had in america that mimics the ones I've had in asia, but nothing is worth that treatment made to make me feel I was wrong, lol.
