Pete's Tavern New York Reviews from The Last Year
Another New York historic tavern in lower Manhattan,
Another New York historic tavern in lower Manhattan, establish in the late 1800s, Pete's Tavern offers quality, and charm. Full bar, beers, nonalcoholic options, and great food make for a winning combination. Our server was fantastic and walked us through lunch options for later fair in the middle of the day. We tried an order of their calamari, which was done very well. A great snack to keep us going in the great walk of Manhattan Island. This is a must see when in the city.
While I can't comment on the food having not eaten there.
The atmosphere and history are huge selling points. Throw in a decent Guinness and great neighborhood, and you have a good pub no matter the circumstances. The service was fast and efficient albeit a bit depleted on our visit. Age of the tavern gives off an odor, not off putting to most, but may be a point of contention for some.

Pete's Tavern, located in the Gramercy Park neighborhood of New York City, claims to be the oldest continuously operating bar and restaurant in the city. The building was constructed in 1829, and it originally housed the Portman Hotel. The bar itself was established in 1864 by Tom and John Healy, Irish immigrants. Over the years, it has seen a lot of history. During Prohibition, it famously operated as a flower shop to disguise its true nature. One of its most famous patrons was the writer O. Henry, who is said to have written "The Gift of the Magi" while sitting in one of its booths. The bar retains much of its historical charm, with its original mahogany bar, tin ceiling, and historic memorabilia on display. It remains a popular spot for both locals and tourists looking to experience a piece of New York City's history.

This review is for the burger only!!! Almost the perfect burger. Big, Moist and juicy, perfectly charred, amazing fries and amazing pickle. I ordered it medium rare and it came out medium. Great historic bar feel. Our service was satisfactory. Perhaps NY's best burger.

The only reason this place is still open is because when Caffè Panna is sold out of ice cream and you've waited in line for an hour, you need a shitty burger and a glass of cheap wine.
Food and drinks were great.
Waitress was incredibly rude, tried to not serve us and then told us we could not have certain items that she was serving to others simply because she had a problem with us. The bar staff were perfectly nice, we were very excited to drink/dine here and were having a great day until our interaction with this woman who honestly just hurt our feelings. No anger harbored just confused and put off by the experience.
O. Henry's hangout
Visiting Pete's Tavern was high on our list to visit in New York City. We were not disappointed. We arrived a couple of hours earlier than our table reservation for dinner, and we had a great chat at the bar with the bartender. We were seated at the O'Henry booth where he sat and wrote his famous stories. The service was friendly, the food was excellent, and the beer outstanding! We can't wait to return.

The calamari is so good you get a big portion with homemade marinara sauce. The sauce is so good! The chicken pot pie had a flaky crust. Decent of chicken breast cubes, celery, carrots, and sauce with decent; need a little more and it would have been perfect. Staff is very attentive. The ambience is classic pub.

The atmosphere is old New York at its best, food is always consistent in quality & drinks are made to perfection. Wait staff is professional & on their toes to please. A place you can always look forward to revisiting.
Traditional, wonderful English-style Pub near Union Square - perfect service.
Wonderful Pub near Union Square. A traditional English/Irish style Pub that also has very good food. The beer variety is first class, they have a couple of their own Ales/IPAs, and the service is top notch. My favourite Pub near Union Sq.

We got penne a la vodka, beef and Guinness pie, and fried zucchini. All of the food was yummy. We got bread and oil as soon as we sat down. The service was fantastic. The food was there soooo fast. Everything was hot. We had reservations in the dining room. The place was packed. Lots of celebrity pics on the walls. I would go back.
My friends reserved the bar upstairs for 3 hours.
When I got there, before the 3 hours was up I wasn't allowed up to see my friends. I was left alone as a 20 something girl which felt very unsafe.
Fast food experience sit down, eat and get out …
Food was ok ~ but one member of staff extremely rude showed us to a table saying you must leave before 830 so we had one hour. It was absolutely packed - chairs touched next table, was constantly being knocked into by waiters as they could not pass as no room. Would not want to be there in an emergency you didn’t even have a ft around you. We obeyed rules and asked for bill and same man came and wow he was so rude agin rushing me telling me how to use Apple Pay . We then saw him be rude to two guys on table next to us. Definitely won’t visit here again but to be fair our waitress was lovely and the food was ok. The place nice but far too packed out it was like a fast food experience.
Great restaurant to go on Christmas.
It is so festive with the lights and decorations. I had a hamburger of course with fries. It was a great burger. The service was great. Definitely go here if you want a festive Christmas experience.
Pete's Tavern is a place that I've wanted to go to for
Pete's Tavern is a place that I've wanted to go to for years. This weekend, my wife, daughter, and I, stopped in for lunch on a Saturday afternoon. Pete's has been around since 1864 and is the oldest bar in NYC. it has a great location right in Gramercy. Just walking through the front doors brings you back in time. The bar itself is beautiful along with the tin roof ceiling. Pictures are all over with a who's who of famous people dining here. We sat in a dining room in the back which was nice, but I'd recommend sitting in the bar area. Our food was excellent! I ordered a cheddar burger which was huge and came with fries. The Pete's IPA went great with it! My wife and daughter ordered brunch, avocado toast and an omelette, and loved theirs as well. It was just a fun experience going here. It's the bar O. Henry made famous writing The Gift of the Magi in one of the booths. There was also an episode of The Blacklist filmed here (you can see "Pete's" stenciled in the window in the scene). If you're in Manhattan and looking for a unique place to eat, stop in or make a reservation at Pete's!
This place is a total dump.
..Staff is useless, been there before, and it wasn't great...but figured I'd try again. Bar is packed and loud and quite honestly, isn't the cleanest place to be standing while you're waiting 20-30 minutes to get a drink. Restaurant is small, and if full, (even with reservations) they will throw you upstairs in their attic, near no one, which is quite rude, (just tell people you don't have a table). Food is less than good and expensive. So if you're looking for an awful time...Head to Pete's!

Loved this comfort meal! The staff was very friendly and we loved the holiday decor and lighting. They realized we were going to be sharing the food, so they actually brought it served split up which was incredibly thoughtful. I've never had a restaurant offer to do that before. My only complaint is that a club soda was 5.50 (same as any fountain drink which is odd because it is water) and my 3 friends got diet cokes which they believe was Pepsi. The waiter offered refills but failed to mention refills are not free. We spent $33 on Pepsi's. I like this spot a lot and I would definitely come back, but do wish the fountain drink situation could've been avoided.

I came here the day after Christmas and it was very romantic and beautiful. I really loved all of the Christmas decorations and it really got me in the festive mood! The food was okay and service was good. Really loved the ambiance although the bar area was a bit loud. If you want to come here for the holidays make sure you reserve in advance!! Had to reserve in November since it's a very popular spot.

This place is an original! My boyfriend who's a New Yorker said he's come here before for drinks but never for the food so we chose Pete's to grab a quick bite before heading to a comedy show. We walked up to the hostess and she asked if we had a reservation which we didn't. The place was pretty busy as there is a back seating area for more of a restaurant feel. The bar area was full and there was some seating in that area. She sat us down right away which we were happy about because the bar area has a lot of lights and decor. Everyone here is very attentive. Apparently the burgers are a popular item to order off the menu but we ended going with the NY steak bites with a side of their mashed potatoes. Delish! And the perfect amount of food for the both of us. Service was fantastic 5 stars! Our server, I believe his name was David, was super warm and accommodating. I trusted his recommendation for my cocktail and the food. My boyfriend also liked that near the restrooms there were photos of celebrities that have visited this place and ate there. We will definitely come back and try the burger next time we are in town.
Great ambience and always a fun time when we are at Pete's.
They always deliver a great burger and a Guinness!
Classic NYC tavern with solid food and a better ambiance.
Love visiting during the holiday season but be prepared for a crowd. That said it makes it even more fun if/when you get a seat.
Fascinating history, happening vibe, first-class burger
Pete’s is a happening place! We stumbled upon it for lunch after finding we would never get a table at Rolf’s. The place was packed but we lucked into two seats at the bar. I had an excellent burger and my wife had a chicken sandwich. Service was great. I loved hearing about the history at Pete’s and the Christmas decor is outstanding. I’m really surprised to see some of the negative reviews. I would highly recommend this place. We left after 2PM and its was still at least two deep at the bar.
DO NOT GO HERE
This place is disgraceful. Staff rude and threatening especially the oriental guy. We had different dishes and both ended up sick afterwards. I would 100% recommend going anywhere else but Pete's Tavern.
Awesome restaurant
Great food - great vibes!! Great service! We all ordered different dishes and each enjoyed our food. The holiday drinks were good too!
Great Bar/Restaurant - Poor Food
We had dinner on a Tuesday evening. Very helpful and friendly staff, but food was terrible. The chicken burger was very dry and not eatable. French fries sooked in oil. If you see the great historic place, I would have expected much better food.
