On a cold New York evening we decided to go to this place.
It was a bit of an Uber ride for us, but came highly recommended by someone. ++Pate. This was so so good. I just kept eating it. I wish the butter wasn't as hard as it was, making it difficult to spread on my bread. ++ Mussels . The garlic sauce accentuated the taste of this dish. I'm not a fish person, but I kept eating this. ++ Ricotta Ravioli. On point as well. -- Tartar. Probably one of the worst steak tartares I've had. I don't think it was seasoned properly. Tasted awfully dry and bland. We landed leaving half the dish. So why only 3 instead of 4 stars. Well, here's the part I absolutely didn't like. They seated us outside - I'm all for outdoor seating where these restaurants have encroached on the footpath post pandemic. However the heater was suboptimal (whether intentional or unintentional, I don't know), so we were feeling cold. I asked her to turn up the heat and she said that this was the highest. She said she can supply is blankets for $20 or benies for $20. Are you kidding me? I'm paying good money to eat here and you cant ensure that your patrons are cozy/comfortable and trying to upsell us stuff to keep warm. I've been to a ton of places and never seen anything like this. It definitely left a bad taste in my mouth.

We went to Pastis last night- was super excited after claiming a reservation on ResX. Around 5:15pm, the ResX app was down which unfortunately meant I could not see the details for my 7:15pm reservation. I called the restaurant to see if I'd still be able to come in and after a long wait on the phone, the host was so incredibly rude and actually HUNG UP ON ME!! I am NOT one to write a review like this, and I was so shocked that this happened at such a high end restaurant. Luckily for me, the app came back before my reservation and I called the restaurant back to clarify that my res was still in their system. Once again, he was incredibly rude and sassy. Once we were seated the same host gave us menus - which were only drink menus and we weren't given food menus until we asked for them. We sat outside and we're freezing so if it's a cold night I don't recommend sitting outside. With all that, the food was very delicious and I would recommend to people who want a good meal.

While it was super busy and the bar is packed with people and those waiting for a table, Naomi was super attentive. She asked if I wanted to review the menu u and then made suggestions. I told her we were worried of the special selling out and she immediately went tot he manager to ask to put one aside and added it to our bar bill! She is amazing!!!! Thank you for a wonderful moment in the hustle of the bar!

The restaurant exudes charm and sophistication, with its classic Parisian decor and bustling atmosphere. The ambiance is lively and inviting, making it the perfect spot for a casual lunch or a romantic dinner. The menu at Pastis features a variety of French classics, with a focus on fresh, seasonal ingredients. The Steak Frites is a standout dish, with tender, flavorful steak served with crispy fries and a delicious sauce. The Moules Frites is another must-try, with plump, juicy mussels and perfectly cooked fries. In addition to the food, the service at Pastis is excellent. The waitstaff is friendly and attentive, ensuring that every guest has a pleasant dining experience. The wine list is also impressive, with a variety of French wines to choose from. Overall, Pastis is a wonderful spot to enjoy classic French cuisine in a lively, authentic setting. The food, service, and ambiance are all top-notch, and I look forward to returning soon.

I was able to score a reservation last minute on this busy Valentine's Day weekend. Once I arrived, I met with the hostess and confirmed the reservation. They seated us within 3 minutes, and our server right away provided water and bread! The ambiance screams romantic with the soft lighting, candles on the table and soft tunes! Our waitress was very attentive and provided exceptional service! Not only is the ambiance great but the food is even better plus the portions are a decent size! We received tons of fries with our meals and additional fresh bread! Drinks : not pictured ( I got 1 St. German Spritz & my partner got 1 agave marmalade ) if you like sweet drinks order St. German Sprits! Appetizer : onion soup ( a cheese masterpiece) Main course : my partner got the Cheeseburger a l americane & I got the steak frites ! Service :5/5 Ambiance: 5/5 Food : 5/5
Be the first to ReplyAs always, a fabulous evening.
Early cocktails at the bar followed by a comfortable table for 8. Appreciated how smoothly our server took care of us. Great wines and wonderful food. From burgers, to steak frites, to branzino, to duck... Everyone was thrilled with their choices. Great birthday celebration and Fabulous evening overall. Thank you Pastis team!
Be the first to ReplyThis is the place for a cool lunch with friends anytime.
I tried my first escargot and it was delicious. Definitely not what you think and I say just go for it. Service was friendly but definitely busy on a Friday afternoon. The ambiance of the restaurant itself was fun and cool, and great location in the city for cool shopping and things. For lunch I got the croque monsieur. The overall presentation was great with ample cheese, lovely sauce and soft toasted bread. It could use more ham in the sandwich itself for my appetite. The fries are really good too. Grab some friends and have a nice lunch!

Very mediocre food at ridiculous prices! The chicken sandwich was underwhelming- lacked flavor. Avocado "tartin"- was mushy and completely flavorless. Coffee was lukewarm Thoroughly underwhelming, can get better tasting food for a fraction of the price in many other places in the city. Atmosphere was nice- I guess?

What a vibe! The steak sandwich with the pepper sauce is chefs kiss. And their fries. And their bar oh my goodness. Chris is the man, make sure to chat him up for an even better time.
Be the first to ReplyI think I come here at least 2-3 times a month.
I love the ambiance, the service is great and their food is incredible. I love both the onion and potato leek soup. Their cheeseburger is one of my favorites with a generous amount of fries. The steak sandwich is another favorite. The cauliflower Au gratin is so tasty. Come here, you won't regret it.
Be the first to ReplyStephen Starr is a genius.
I've had the pleasure of discovering his fabulous restaurants in Philadelphia. His reincarnation/reinvention of Pastis in NYC surpasses the original in every way. Absolutely love the staff, and more importantly, the cuisine!!!

A parallel universe exists by the Whitney with cool folks galore! Bustling Thursday eve and the host 'rented' us a table for an hour with strict orders. Attentive waiter served our wine, shared a generous tasty steak sandwich (who could manage the whole thing?) with excellent people watching. As close as you can get to a Parisian vibe on this side of the Pond.

Lovely spot, great location, I was surprised that a McNally restaurant was so lacking. Granted, we were there on a holiday for brunch (Pres Day) and were surprised how NOT busy it was but after the clearly pre-made omelette, underdone sausages, and lukewarm flat white, it has gone way downhill, IMHO. Baked goods as always were spot on, service was great and super-efficient but food was so underwhelming.
Be the first to ReplyThe restaurant was very busy on a Thursday night.
Lots of people! The staff were nice; I do wish they were more attentive though. My coke was never refilled, which was disappointing. I did appreciate that they let us stay and talk about 30 minutes after we finished eating and they never prompted us to leave or asked for the table. The food here was pretty meh which was disappointing since the reviews on here are so great! I took my coworker and her husband here who were visiting the city from Indiana for the first time. We all ordered the steak, and I have to say that it was pretty chewy. My coworker and her husband both asked for well done and they got pretty red meat; I had asked for medium and mine was on the medium rare side. I felt very bad since it was their first time in New York and I wanted to give them a great dining experience! The fries were pretty good which was the highlight of the meal. I might return to try other items on the menu, but it was definitely a disappointing first experience.
Be the first to ReplySuper friendly service, lovely ambience, amazing brunch.
The croissants are a must, I imagine the other pastries are great as well.

The food is excellent and it's notable for everyone to know that. You're not going to have a bad meal here, it's guaranteed quality. But like any extremely busy place, they do rush you. And I can confirm this because I've been there 3 times in the last month. No matter what time of day, the servers and busing staff are very on top of every move you are making. It kind of feels like everyone is staring at you to put your fork down. This might be great for a working lunch to get in and get out, but for $150 date night, it's pretty distracting. You feel like someone is watching you take your last sip of wine or last bite of steak because they were clearing the plates as I was still chewing my last bite ... And this restaurant knows that is not considered "good service". I think that's important for the restaurant to see this.

You drink Pastis in a small run down cafe in Southeastern France with a gathering of older gents, pouring a bit of water into the milky white beverage. This version is a medium size boite hovering somewhere between the intimacy of a bistro and the bustle of a brasserie. We came on a Sunday to celebrate the Feinschmecker's birthday. We arrived a few minutes ahead of the reserved time, with one en retard and were nonetheless promptly seated. Kudos to the FOH staff. Our table was small -- two seats on the banquette, two bistro chairs. A bottle of mineral water arrived quickly. The Feninschmecker and Mr. D plumped for their usual dirty martinis, I had the Nouveau Carre, a bourbon cocktail with some actual Pastis. Cocktails were excellent, as was La Portena's glass of Sancerre. You still get bread and butter at Pastis.Apps were generally successful. Highest acclaim goes to the delicate tuna crudo beautifully plated. The pate de campagne was savory and well seasoned, might have used a bit more accompaniment, or perhaps a larger portion for the price. The artichokes were tender and there was enough to share. The farmed Island Creek oysters were on the small side, fresh and briny despite the season, but not all that flavorful. A glass of Muscadet hit the spot.Did anyone say steak frites - that is certainly what to order here. The Feinschmecker's hangar steak was juicy and about as tender as that cut can be. Mr. D's entrecote was steakhouse worthy. As I cook a lot of steak at home, I decided to plump for the tagine - it arrived in its proper conical lidded dish, but I did not get the big blast of Moroccan spice as the lid was lifted. The portion was on the smaller side, the lamb tender, the fruits and veggies all in order, but the couscous had absorbed all the juice and it was a bit dry. Usually tagine is served with the couscous on the side, the stew in enough jus to keep things moist. La Portena's branzino disappeared in a flash, but I did get a taste of the savory tapenade. She did not find the dish memorable. If you are dining in a group, do not order a side of fries, simply steal a few from your companions. I had ordered a side and came to the realization that I could have just stolen plenty from the steak eaters - this is where the house shows some generosity. The cauliflower gratin did not blow me away, but my companions had spirited away the crust before I got there. For dessert, we shared an excellent sticky toffee pudding, which matched (or perhaps surpassed) the one at Hawksmoor - but left me with a question -- why sticky toffee pudding at a restaurant named Pastis?A double espresso ran $8.50, and did not include a biscuit or chocolate. A bit of an ouch. Still a very nice experience that I would happily repeat on the basis of the vibe, the playlist, and above all the professional and thoughtful service.

This is a really fun spot for a special occasion like a birthday - it's a lively, warm spot with a tailored menu that is strong across the board. For appetizers, we had some soups, salads, the Mac & cheese, and the ravioli, and they were all smash hits. I was a little surprised that the duck I ordered didn't come with any sides, considering the burger and steak both came with generous sides of delightfully crisp pomme frites. Our server, Jeremy, was a delight and made us feel super welcome. Only drawbacks I saw were small portion sizes & the prices for said portions, but if you're looking for a great place to share bites with friends, this is a wise choice.
Be the first to ReplyA place with good environment but mediocre food.
I came in for lunch, so I ordered something light, an onion soup, which seems like the thing that everyone is getting, and a lobster salad. Now, I confess that I never was a big fan of onion soup, but since it's a French restaurant, I was expecting that the "authentic" version of this soup would change my mind about it. Still, no. The soup itself was too salty but no flavor, the cheese when stirred into the soup became a chunky salty sticky chewing gum also with no flavor. The lobster salad was ok, but I don't get the whole leaf of lettuce thing, it's only for the presentation. I had to cut them into pieces for 5 minutes before I can dig in. The salad has endive, which I don't have a pallet for, it's bitter but also sweet, kinda weird, does pair well with the orange, but by itself it just tastes too bitter to me. The lobster was bland at best, not really adding too much to the flavor of the salad. Texture was firm, a bit too firm that almost lean towards rubbery. I didn't hate my food, it's just not very impressive for the price point. My friend had the omelet, she didn't like it, it was too salty and has a wired gamy taste. It's not cheap either, despite having no ingredients added to the egg other than some herb that I didn't recognize and maybe some cheese? We ordered the snail as appetizer, it was also salty as hell. A thing I noticed about the service is that you can sometimes find waiters and waitresses stand around in the dinning area chatting. I'm not against them doing so when they are not attending a table, but I just don't understand why they can't do it elsewhere anywhere but not in front of customers. Besides that the service was okay. Overall, come here if you like the show "Sex in the City" or wanted to dine in for the environment.

Food is overly salty. Service is terrible with inattentive waiters. Our waiter today only came by to take our order and we never saw him again. Sorry but a service like that does not deserve any tip whatsoever. Such a shame because this was once a really good spot.
