Simple Cantonese meal
Pang's Kitchen is a popular local restaurant in Happy Valley. It is perhaps the most unpretentious Michelin restaurant in the city. The place is small and menu simple and straightforward. Food in general is very solid. Fried rice is our favorite. Service is family style with a lot of longtime patrons. Price is reasonable. Reservation is a must especially for dinner.

Pang's Kitchen is a small Chinese restaurant listed on Michelinโs Guide for the past 10 years. Servers are attentive and efficient. Corkage at HK$150/btl is very reasonable. Dinner can be done within an hour. Food might not be cheap, but dishes are fresh, hot and tasty. Highly recommend the crunchy Deep-Fried Oysters (HK$45/pc) and the flavorful Steamed Razor Clams with Garlic (HK$65/pc).

If there is a restaurant that embodies Cantonese cuisine, this is it. One star Michelin but you get in there and the owners treat you like you have just enter Cheers bar. They seat you and bring you menus, talk with you. You really feel like you are at home. But the cooking is extraordinary. Simple dishes (seemingly) but prepared with out of this world taste. Isn't that what 1 star Michelin is all about. Standards like Sweet and Sour Pork...crispy, nice pieces of pork (not just fat) with some bone (ribs), a sauce that is sweet but with a little spice at the end. Amazing! Then you have freshly caught stone crabs and razor clams. Fish cakes and sticky rice. All the Cantonese classics but made with extremely intense flavors. The variety of dishes they produce at such a high level is amazing. If there is one Cantonese restaurant you should go to when you visit Hong Kong, it is this one. No pretense and the dishes are not expensive for the quality (between HKD$120-300 per dish)

This restaurant is located in Yik Yam Street, Happy Valley, and has been awarded Michelin 1-star status since 2013. Offering traditional Shunde cuisine, the five of us came tonight to try out the dishes. Arriving early evening, there was not yet many customers. The restaurant was quite small so booking was necessary. The dรฉcor was simple, offering a neighbourhood and homely feeling to diners. We ordered some of the traditional dishes, starting with Sweet and Sour Pork ่ ่ฟ็็้ชจ ($168). The sweet and sour taste of the sauce was balanced well, and the ribs had been deep-fried before stir-frying with the sauce, with a crunchy texture. This dish was certainly delicious. Next was the Salt-baked Chicken ้นฝ็้ ($240 for half). Another Shunde specialty, the chicken was flavourful without dipping to the aromatic ginger sauce, with the meat quite tender and juicy. Another nice dish. Then it was yet another specialty, Daliang Stir-fried Fresh Milk ๅคง่ฏ็้ฎฎๅฅถ ($228). The milk was fluffy on texture, with a slight sweetness, and the chef had added some scallops to enhance the umami taste. It was decent but I would rate the one from Yixin better. The Shrimp Paste Chinese Lettuce in Claypot ่ฆ้ฌๅ็่ ($158) was served sizzling in the claypot, with the fragrant aromas of the shrimp paste dominating. It delivered on taste, but is a bit too salty especially if you donโt eat together with rice. The last dish we ordered was Traditional Stuffed Dace ๅฎถ้้้ฏช้ญ ($238). It was a lot of work to prepare, from removing the flesh from the dace, mince and adding cured meat, before stuffing it back to the fish and deep fried. With sauce on top, I found the stuffing was not as good as I expected, and while the sauce had a nice fermented black bean taste, was simply too salty. For dessert we had Almond Sweet Soup with Egg White ่็ฝๆไป่ถ ($45 each). While my mother thought the sweet soup was too bland in taste, for me it was ok. The almond aromas were not particularly intense though, so overall, it was a bit mediocre. Service was good, with the owner Mr. Pang supervising on site to look after the customers. Seeing I had my bag behind me he brought over a chair for me to place it. The bill on the night was $1,460 which was reasonable. There were some good dishes worth trying out.

We visited twice in our 10 day trip. On both occasions the food was fresh, hot and fantastic. It was always busy therefore we called ahead and managed to get a table.

The restaurant has gained a one star Michelin recommendation therefore itโs usually very crowded. Reservation is a must. Dishes are quite delicious however the place is extremely small not comfortable at all. Dinner is usually rushed cause there are usually two seatings.

It has been more than 10 years since my last visit. Food quality was maintained at the same high level. Impressive. The outlet serves typical Cantonese dishes, made to good quality but also at a steep price. Service was prompt but lacking friendliness. Decor of the store was outdated, tables were densely setup. One would enjoy the food but not too much on the environment.
