OX Belfast Reviews from The Last Year
Belfast dining experience
Visited Ox on the 22nd June with my wife and we had a most enjoyable experience, we had the tasting menu and all food was excellent, special mention for the lamb and scallop courses. All food was well presented and ingredients explained by our server. We didn’t have the wine pairing option but had a nice bottle of wine with our meal. Nick the sommelier and Emma the hostess made our visit very welcoming and enjoyable.
Highly enjoyed
It’s difficult to review this restaurant as it’s extremely expensive so it suits those who are happy to spend £100-£150 per person and that is the restaurant’s intention. The employment of a sommelier necessitates very high wine prices, so avoiding wine is a way to keep the final bill down. However it is a highly pleasant experience with excellent food, so if you’ve got the money then go and enjoy it! Service was supreme. We had been given a voucher as a Christmas present and we thoroughly enjoyed it, though it was too expensive to entice us back.
Ox - a very beefy bill!
Text: Nice day at Ox - nice food and wine and great company with my wife and our best friends. Food was delicious and sommelier matched the wines very well. But have to admit - the bill for £572 didn’t match the experience, the whole thing very overpriced unfortunately. If you don’t care about cost, then there are far worse places to eat but this was a lot of money for a 4 course tasting menu with accompanying wines for 4 people. Sure, we had an aperitif to start as well, but we still couldn’t believe the final bill and if took away from the whole experience If you are going, might be better to stick to the 2/3 course lunch menu (£40/£45)). Nice day - but will be slow to repeat simply on price.
High Hopes Cruelly Dashed
Maybe my experience wasn't typical, but I found Ox to be the most pretentious place I have ever visited -- and I'm a New Yorker. We arrived on a Saturday night (booked a table for us and two visiting guests) and were informed it would be a surprise tasting menu, with wine pairings offered. We decided to go with the flow; the dishes weren't bad, but I'll never forget the EXTREMELY lengthy description of every element of the wine -- the terroir, the bouquet, the undertones, on and on and on to the point where it seemed redundant to actually drink the stuff. (My guest is a wine collector, btw.) At the two hour mark we were still hoping for a main, and our servers still would not tell us what it was going to be or when we might expect it. When we were finally sprung after three-plus hours, we agreed it was about as unpleasant a restaurant experience as any of us has ever had. Your mileage may vary -- Michelin stars speak louder than individual diners -- but I won't be back.
This review is based on one experience at OX in the summer
This review is based on one experience at OX in the summer of 2023, but it was such a ridiculous experience that I will never forget it. We arrived with visiting guests on a Saturday night. We were informed that the dinner this night would be a surprise tasting menu -- interesting concept, I must say. We would not be told what dishes were coming, but were handed a list of ingredients and asked if we had any objections or allergies. We indicated we did not. We also chose to have the wine pairings being offered (sight unseen). We waited a long time for our first course, and a longer time for our second. The dishes were not uninteresting, as I recall, but each was preceded by a serving of the wine for the course and a VERY long, extremely pedantic recitation of every element of its terroir, its nuances, its undertones, etc. (My friend is a wine collector, by the way.) The wines were ok, nothing great, and not so wildly different from one another despite the epic descriptions to which we were subjected -- and I mean exactly that, there was no short-circuiting the server so that we might taste the wines and discover them for ourselves. After more than two hours we were still waiting for our mains, and the servers refused to give us any information about what was still to come. To be honest, at that point we just wanted to get out. The levels of pretension were on par with those in the Netflix film "The Menu." It was, on the whole, one of the most miserable evenings I've ever spent in a restaurant. Maybe it's better on a "normal" night when there isn't a tasting menu being sprung on unsuspecting diners. I'll never know , because I'm not going back.
Not to be missed
This was possibly the best meal we’ve ever had. We’ve eaten at Michelin two and three star restaurants and none were finer than Ox. Everything was perfect from flavour to quality of ingredients to innovative dishes to portion size. This was really a rare experience. We had the pleasure to meet chef/owner Stephen Toman. In addition to being extremely pleasant he is incredibly talented. Belfast is lucky to have this restaurant.
Cool Restaurant
What a great place. Local, seasonal ingredients put together very well. You can see why this restaurant has won awards. Definitely a highlight of our trip to Belfast. Would definitely eat here again next time
This place is phenomenal.
All the dishes were unique and spectacular. The service was great as well. I loved the ambience of this spot. I highly recommend checking this place out.
Outstanding start to finish.
Top class from start to finish. Service was excellent, so smooth you didn’t even notice the tiny details they were doing. Knowledgeable on about all their wines and talked through each dish. Food was outstanding!
Seasonal tasting menu with slick service and good wines
We had a good meal at Ox and enjoyed the seasonal tasting menu and ingredients. Very professional and slick staff. They were very good about swapping out one of the courses for me. The dining room was full and the atmosphere good. We had the wine pairings but actually felt that there was too much wine for the small food courses - sometimes we were struggling to drink the wine in time for the next course. Maybe some would think that's a good problem to have! It was an expensive meal but it is easy to understand why this might be the case. The Jersey Royal potato dish was our favourite!
Tiny main portions!
Beautiful bright interior with large windows. Open planned kitchen at the ground level with a mezzanine level over it. Lunch menu -2/3 courses. Had the additional course of the spring bites which was really amouse bouch but paid for , 2 items for £6- cheese profiteroles and the foie grae tartlet- latter was amazing , the former average. Bread was average with butter: standard pre-starter item. The starter of Crapaudine which was pulled meat of a Guinea fowl with a layer of rose film/layer over it with two amazing sauces- Apple green colour- beautiful tasting and looking dish. Mains of lamb was tiny- was on The gamey side with accompanied of two asparagus with a half boiled potatoes and couple of strands of grilled spring onion- good tasting dish but portion size too small. Desert of the honey cake with clove had a honey ice cream and some mead sauce- beautiful dish with a crispy disk. The petit four of fennel snap and pastle was average. Service was good other than when the menu arrived and it was only the long tasting menu! They should offer the lunch menu when. Providing the menu rather than diners having to ask for it. Please be more generous with main portioning.
Top end cooking and a lovely lunch
Amazing quality cooking at Ox. We went at lunchtime and took advantage of the reduced lunch menu but next time we will definitely do the whole tasting menu. The ingredients and cooking is top notch and is one of the best Michelin star restaurants we have been to. Excellent wine list too. The staff are lovely and very knowledgable. Gluten Free options provided without a fuss and were just as delicious

It can be under your name or a name you choose! Some reservation offers already include the AppointmentTrader Transfer Service which will transfer the reservation in to your name. If its not included you can add it on after buying the reservation for a small fee. One thing on that though: As many reservations become available at last minute, taking a reservation in someone else name is quick and great for privacy. Most reservations on AT are listed with a virtual phone number, so all you need to do is present the phone number at the hostess stand and you are good to go!
