Otium is a WOW for culinary creativity, flavor and palette pleasure
Otium is a WOW for culinary creativity, flavor and palette pleasure. The menu has selections that you have seen before, but here they've been tweaked in a way that has you thinking about your next visit. I selected the Rigatoni, Grandma's Bread, and ended with the Apple Crostata. The crowd was buzzing at lunch. My highest compliments and looking forward to my future visit.
Be the first to ReplyMisleading menu
It is not specified on the menu that the price of the wines refers to the glass and not the bottle. This lack of information, which smacks of fraud, weighs heavily on the final bill
Be the first to ReplyExcellent Service and I'd Gladly Return
I had to be in LA for a conference and my brother agreed to treat me at the restaurant of my choice. I didn't want to waste my chance to try a noteworthy place in the downtown area so I narrowed it down to four, one of them being Otium. I was hesitant, however, given the negative reviews. I'll address the issue of service, first. It was fairly crowded when we arrived for our 7:30 pm reservation. However, we were seated promptly and the waiters were gracious, attentive, and helpful when it came to answering our questions about the menu and they briefly explained how the family-style meal would commence. The wait was a little lengthy for our drinks and appetizers but not offensively so. For our appetizers, we ordered the Naan with Vermont Cultured Butter, which for me, was outstanding, if a bit pricey at $9 for one portion. Our friends ordered the Ora King Salmon Tartare, which was more of a miss than a hit in my opinion. For my cocktail, I had the Gonzo Daiquiri, which was one of the less expensive drinks ($17.00). I thoroughly enjoyed it as Iโm a big fan of basil in beverages for some reason. My brother and his friends also voiced appreciation for their cocktails. For my entrรฉe, I selected the Russet Potato Gnocchi ($32.00) with Parmesan, Guanciale (had to Google this; it's pork cheekโrich, fatty, and delicious!), and Truffle. My oh my, was I sorry that I had to share! I just wanted everyone to stop talking and go away so I could enjoy my dish in the silence and solitude that it merited. Iโm not a chef or even someone who knows handmade, homemade pasta from Muellerโs but that gnocchi was heavenlyโpillowy, light, orgasmic! It overshadowed any ills, faults, and missteps I had encountered prior to ingesting it. As for the other main dishes, they were pretty uninspired. For one thing, I get that this is a โfamily-styleโ place but the homey vibe was overdone, particularly as it relates to presentation. For example, I feel that the $40 Roasted Chicken with Potatoes, Spring Onions, Shishito, Cherry Tomatoes, and Aji Verde (a spicy Peruvian green sauce, made with cilantro, jalapeรฑos, and a little mayonnaise and Parmesan) would have been better as a simpler dish. As served, it appeared to be a mound of chicken parts, each piece indistinguishable from the other. It was messy and unappetizing to view though it tasted fine. For sides, we ordered two. The Otium Potatoes ($11.00) with Aleppo Pepper and Crรจme Fraรฎche. They were tasty and had a nice texture but I think they might have gone well with the roasted chicken but what do I knowโฆ We also ordered the Cauliflower ($26.00) with Sultana (currents?), Grape, Caper, Almond, and Cilantro. This was easily the most distasteful, throwaway dish of the night. It was too firm for my taste and it lacked seasoning. We ended up eating a LOT of food and were too full for dessert. Overall, my brother said heโd be unlikely to return since there are so many other places in LA to eat. However, his friends said that they had tried Otium a few months ago and it hadnโt been as good as it was this time. For me, Iโd return just for the gnocchi dish and also to try the other pasta dishes.
Be the first to ReplyBeautiful setting with some excellent dishes - at a price.
I dined here last December on a warmish LA night. Lovely setting adjacent to The Broad sharing a courtyard in DTLA. The restaurant itself is beautifully built with natural woods in a modern setting. I've dined here once before and decided to give it another chance as it fit well prior to my attendance at the LA Phil which is just one block away. Overall the experience was great. Service was very good however was a bit bummed that with all the pomp & circumstance welcome lecture about how to order (all at once, so we know how to portion it out for you) kinda goes out the window when your server/food runner messes that order up. In my case, I pretty much sat and watched my friend eat most if his entree which was delivered too early (and fully admitted by our server as a mistake) but then there was zero correction or adjustment on the experience. At least toss in a free drink for having the dinner flow impacted so much. Not the end of the world, however then again, don't open up the dining experience with a 'we need to tell you how to order.' Prices lean on the more expensive side but at least most of the portions justify. I had the Rockfish which was excellent - the taste, texture, quality, freshness and flavors all A+ and something I'd order again for sure and highly recommend. The $9 Naan bread was tasty as expected (and as compared to $3.50 at your favorite Indian restaurant - and those guys give you double the amount). The $20 Escarole starter salad was way overpriced as the leafy greens are spread thin across a plate - a small to medium sized portion. The $85 filet mignon was well overpriced as it was served drowned/sauced in a medium bowl which amounted to ~7 oz of meat at the end of the day. Service was attentive-ish. I requested regular seating but was placed at high tops which was annoying and unexplained. No idea about parking options as I just parked at the Dorothy Chandler Pavilion lot which proved best for easy in/out vs the Disney Hall lot. I'm sure Otium offers parking somewhere but did not see anything in the area. They offer indoor and outdoor dining - suggest to push for the low standard tables unless you are more a high top kind of person but the tables are close to one another.

OTIUM was the perfect pre-concert dinner experience! We relied on the waiter's recommendations, and although I had some doubts as items were not what I would usually order, we could not have done better. We started with the bread and pate that it was so good I could have just made dinner of that and the perfect Old Fashion (that was the best cocktail I have ever had!) The bread was crispy and the balance was perfect. We shared all dishes and everything was beyond great. It was just a short walk to Disney Concert Hall, but next time we'll go earlier so we have time for dessert. This is the second time I've been there and it was even better than before!

Had a great meal there. The host and hostess were nice enough to seat us in a large table by the window since we were leaving early. And the food was incredible. We started with the naan bread and bone marrow broth were innovation and delicious. The cucumber salad was fresh and delicious and creative. The cauliflower was also spectacular. But the tri tip topped offer the entire meal. Cooked rare and perfectly with a special rub and sauce. We were delighted with the entire meal and our server Ava was attentive and helpful.

Fabulous restaurant. If your in LA you must go here. It's delicious. Especially the home potatoes. Every thing we tried tasted great. Cooked from the heart
Be the first to ReplyMust try!
We came for a surprise dinner for my husband. The food here is fantastic. Perfect for sharing. There were three of us and we ordered an entree from each course. The naan with mousse, beef tartare, gnocchi, beet salad, rib eye with bone marrow reduction, and potatoes. It was perfect! The ambiance is wonderful as well. I highly recommend it here! They even wrote my husband the sweetest card for his birthday!
Be the first to ReplyOtium, great food
I would like to start off by saying that Otium is a fine restaurant that serve wonderful, creative dishes which are absolutely fresh and delicious. The setting is beautiful and modern, tucked away in a very artistic, upscale area. The vibe is young and fresh with a fantastic bar setting. The staff is all very friendly and sincere, where the hostesses never appear to be condescending as they do in many upscale restaurants. The servers are well versed in the menu and offer great opinions on some of their favorite dishes. As for the food, the Naan bread is not to be missed as it come out piping hot and absolutely delicious. The potatoes are unrivaled and perhaps the best to be found in any restaurant. A new addition (at least since my last visit) is the Duck Confit Pot Pie which comes out piping hot on a skillet packed full of shredded duck, onions, carrots, etc. The crust is flaky, puffy and the size is gracious! This dish is incredibly flavorful and stands its ground against any traditional pot pie. Overall, a standing ovation to all the chef and his staff who prepare all the delicious plates. My one complaint is the troubling trend that has been developing in many places where restaurants are pushing people to share small plates and dine in a โTapasโ type atmosphere. There is nothing wrong with this style of dining and may be a nice novelty to do so but patrons shouldnโt be pressured into doing so with wait staff getting offended when diners donโt choose to go this route. That just illustrates the pressure that the servers must receive from the restaurant to push this style of dining. As a regular diner, I am familiar with this trend and do not need to be badgered or need to justify why itโs not my preferred choice of dining. It is also not an issue to be debated nor a threat of having plates come out at separate times. I understand ordering a plethora of plates to be shared among the table would be more profitable to the establishment but to aggressively ask patrons to do so is insulting and ruined the entire dining experience. In conclusion, Otium is a wonderful restaurant with fantastic food, a warm but fun environment and a pleasant staff. My one complaint may be a personal one that may not bother others so I DO highly recommend dining here.
Be the first to ReplyNot a great experience
Not real impressed. You place order at counter and are told to take own silverware and get own water. Despite all this, there is a 5% "service charge" that does not go to food runners but is because "our rent went up". Portions were generous but prices were high for this type of restaurant. A single serving of coke was $8. Food did not come out of kitchen at same time for both members of our party and I observed this at other tables too. Location is convenient to museums, but I think you can find a better value elsewhere.
Be the first to ReplyWe have to go back!
We took some friends to Otium for a special birthday. Weโd seen the Netflix show The Final Table and though it would be fun to visit Chef Timothy Hollingsworthโs restaurant. We were not disappointed as the food was a feast of flavors! Love how they serve the food in one dish to be shared and then time the courses seamlessly. The price tag is high for us but we will definitely go back for special occasions. It was such a culinary event that we keep talking about it. All the staff was friendly and our waiter so helpful. A throughly enjoyable evening!

Otium's menu is very diverse, combining lots of different ingredients and cuisines but ultimately tying it all back to LA dining. The dishes were truly fine dining quality but the atmosphere is very chill and relaxed. Strongly recommend any of the pastas as they are outstanding. Super flavourful yet light at the same time. Service was attentive, very friendly and knowledgable about the menu. Will definitely dine again next time I'm in LA.
Be the first to ReplyOverpriced. Not worth the $
Found it overpriced. The atmosphere doesn't make up for it either. Paid $250 for one main + three sides (potatoes, cauliflower, butter squash) + two glasses of wine? (Ordered a glass of Pinot noir as we were sitting and shockingly was charged $40.) The grilled branzino ($75) tasted like it had been defrost and had lost its texture. Like dry fish crumbs. Service was attentive though. Won't be back.
Be the first to ReplyAlways good and busy! RSVP for a table!
For sharing, we started with Naan Bread with Bone Marrow Emulsion, and Truffle Butter. The Escargot (Garlic Donut) - quite a different experience though we thought the size of the escargot is too small. Also, Grilled Octopus, Grilled Pimento Chicken, Tom Hawk Steak and their signature Pork Chop to share. We could roll out of the restaurant... love every bite and wine selections. If you have room, Warm Chocolate Tart - crust is yummy.

Iโm not from here but Iโm having a hard time accepting there are 38 other essential restaurants in L.A. besides Otium (Otium makes the top of the list in downtown options but not top 38). LA Eater doesnโt even list this as essential. As often is the case with my hometown, Austin Eater.com, I beg to differ. The only reason I canโt go all the way with 5 stars is that we were here in a heat wave and the A.C. Was woefully inadequate. I feel for that staff, they were busting their ass. The Bibb lettuce salad was perhaps one of the most perfect salads Iโve ever had. The Octopus was tender and like we were in Madrid (romesco sauce, with chorizo). Ricotta Gnudi melted in your mouth. Huge wine list with good by the glass options. And a Somm that was actually personable and fun to talk to (very rare). Outstanding service, a real pro waited on us. Itโs not usually 100 degrees here as in Texas so that shortcoming should be easily avoidable.
Be the first to ReplyDisappointing experience and terrible service
Hugely disappointing experience. Arrived on time for our booking, but was asked to wait for our table. Was seated right next to the front door which continually slammed shut throughout the evening. Was left waiting for quite some time for our initial drinks order to be taken, but the server apologised for the wait. He took our drinks and food orders at this stage and the initial drinks and food started coming out. But before our mains came out, we were told they were changing servers and from that point on we didnt have a server visit our table. No more drinks orders, left with dirty plates on our table and not offered the desert menu. After waiting for quite some time, flagged someone down and just asked for the menu. Very poor experience and would not recommend to anyone. Other feedback tells a similar story (poor quality).
Be the first to ReplyOne of the nicest restaurants in downtown LA
Really lovely restaurant, brilliant for romantic date nights or classy dinners. The restaurant itself is beautiful. Food was amazing and very tasty (just a bit too much for us to finish) Cocktails were nice but just very very strong Its a tad pricey but it was very good

Our daughter had booked Tim Hollingsworthโs Otium for my birthday celebration for 2022. The chef had apprenticed at Thomas Kellerโs French Laundry, and with Gordon Ramsay and Alain Ducasse. We saw him win the Final Table series, and lose early in the Tournament of Champions series. It is adjacent to the Broad Museum and Disney Concert Hall in downtown LA. Our first item is naan with cultured Vermont butter, Maldon salt and we add chicken liver mousse. The naan is very good โ our sommelier says it is fermented with buttermilk, and little amounts of garlic. In hindsight, we should have ordered 2 naans and skipped the butter and got the bone marrow emulsion. The size is small, and not enough for 4 people. From the Small Plates section we get the charred Cauliflower with sultana, grape, caper, almond, and cilantro. Since they roast the whole head, the solid stem section was a bit tough to cut through. It is a good dish, but not something to order again. The sauce was a bit too sweet and I prefer something more savory. From the Small Plates section we order our standout dish of the evening โ Ora King Salmon tartare with Tamaki rice, pickled ginger, wasabi, and shiso leaf. We wrap everything up in the shiso leaf as a package. The flavor of the shiso leaf adds a beautiful herbal note to the soft tartare, with the pickled ginger and a very mild form of wasabi. This was also featured in the write-up for the LA Times 101 Best Restaurants of 2021. Our daughter's boyfriend loves duck โ so we ordered the duck croquette with poached prune and parsnip. Our wait person warned us that it was only one croquette, not meant for sharing. We still got it, and shared. It was good. Our selection from the pasta section was Russet potato gnocchi with guanciale, and black truffle. The dish smelt great because of brown butter and black truffles. The gnocchi were soft but also slightly chewy at the same time. The guanciale made it a bit too salty โ that was the only off-note. From the Mains we got the beef short rib cooked in sake Kasu, with turnips, carrots and onions. The short rib was super tender. The vegetables had good firm texture, but the sauce was just OK. I was thinking of the Wagyu Oxtail tagine with cherry reduction sauce we had at Bavel. From the sides section we chose the Otium potatoes with Aleppo pepper, and creme fraiche. This was very good refried smashed potatoes, with an excellent creme fraiche. However we were quite full with the food and wine โ I took a Silver Oaks Cabernet (~$200/bottle) that I got last week as a gift from a work colleague. It was really smooth and went well with the food. By this time we were feeling quite full and felt that we could have done without a second main โ but our waitperson said he recommends 2 dishes per person, so we had ordered this at my suggestion โ I always love a properly roasted skin-on chicken. Their description is Roasted chicken with lemon, thyme, savory, and garlic jus. I liked this a little better than the short ribs. We ended up sharing one dessert โ Warm Chocolate Tart with Banana Ice Cream, Hazelnut, Bourbon Caramel. They put a candle to celebrate my birthday. It was a very nice experience. Have to go back to Otium, perhaps combining a visit to the Broad Museum!
Be the first to ReplyDelicious, + great service
We came here before going to the LA Phil and it was absolutely perfect. We had chosen it for its proximity to Walt Disney Hall but I would absolutely go back for more, just because it is so incredibly good! We started with the Hess Avocado (seemed interesting) and it was such a lovely dish. Lightly battered avocado with nori oil/seaweed and cucumber. It was absolutely delicious (and a surprise!?). Another highlight was the salmon tartare. This was probably my favorite of everything we ordered... it's served with shiso leaves, and meant to be eaten like a lettuce wrap. My mouth waters just thinking about it!
To drink I had the Pepino Le Pew which is one of my favorite drinks in a long time. It was perfectly refreshing and slightly savory? Mezcal, blended with aloe, cucumber, celery, and lemon... YUM - a little bit like a boozy green juice!
Excellent and creative food!
I went to Otium with friends and we thoroughly enjoyed our evening! Excellent food, with enough variety and lots of creativity. The wine cellar is great, and priced fairly. The room is spacious, which helps minimize noise between tables' conversations. We will go again.
Be the first to ReplyTastes of disappointment
Exceptionallly slow service- what a disappointment. I have rarely been so dismayed by how long it took before I received my first appetizer (1 hour) and my first cocktail (an hour and 15). It really took my enjoyment from the experience when the product is provided so long after the order is made. I can't believe it took 30 minutes for my order to even be made. I am in fact writing this review while waiting about an hour and half to wait for the actual entrees. I may actually be more angry if not for how shocked I was with the service. Sad- I was really looking forward to this for weeks.
Correction- entrees took an hour and 45 minutes. The kicker was when one of the servers dropped off a slice of cake with a candle and wished us a happy birthday. Some poor fellow missed their birthday benediction because they just kept the lit candle slice at the table even after we informed them of the error.
Topnotch Food
It was our 1st time dining here. We celebrated my daughterโs pending delivery. Everything was excellent: food, drinks, ambiance, & service.
We had the potato gnocchi, olive garlic tapenade toast & endive to start. Then for entree the eye of the Ribeye & roasted chicken. And for dessert: the Mint Vienetta Cake which we shared.
We enjoyed their cocktails: Ancho Awaken & Pinacillian.
They gave special attention to our celebration.
Overall dining experience was topnotch.
EXQUISITE DELICIOUS FOOD AND SUPERB SERVICE!!
The vibrant people that serve at Otium make you feel very welcome then the food steals your heart away! The presentation, the ingredients and the taste is simply put, the best I have ever had. It is very obvious that the chef/owner and his crew have spared nothing to give you fantastic bites that will leave your taste buds wanting more. The chef and his team are truly artists of food.
Be the first to ReplyEnjoyed small plates at the bar
I am staying at hotel on Bunker Hill and did not want to walk down (and back up) the steep hills on all sides of it. Otium is close by and had good reviews, so I tried it. I went early, but it was already crowded, inside and out, and I got the last seat at the bar. The bartender was helpful with my drink order and going over the menu choices. I opted for small plates. They have some โsushiโ dishes which are actually sashimi. I ordered the hamachi and it was excellent. I couldnโt decide on another small plate and took the bartenderโs recommendation on a small pasta dish. It was rich, just on the verge of being too heavy, but very good and not too big. The menu is interesting and I may go back to try other dishes.

Came in at 5, was told there was a table, but they needed it at 6:15. Totally appreciate the heads up from the start rather than rushed service.
Scallops were excellent. But the chicken...possibly the best chicken and potatoes I've ever had. Excellent. Service was good.
Price for crazy high, but pretty sure its worth it.
