We had an excellent dinner at Osteria Al Mare. The restaurant is clean and inviting with local art on the walls. Ordered the whole crab which was large and spectacular. My partner had the short rib with polenta and he finished his whole meal with a smile on his face. It’s a little off of the beaten path but on the water with plenty of parking.
Be the first to ReplyGreat spot for authentic Italian food in Monterey.
A shot walk, or really short drive, from Cannery Row overlooking the water. Every employee that we came into contact with was 100% committed to ensuring that we had an enjoyable experience.
Be the first to ReplyPoorly managed.
Attn: #kitchennightmares Gordon Ramsey would tear this place apart. Sadly, it really could be great as is, if was managed properly. Cool location with a nice view of the Monterey Bay, right off Cannery Row. Nicely appointed, fun art, good energy. Food was pretty solid. Seafood seemed fresh and was the better of what we had. Ragu Ravioli was ok, I was starving so I ate it, but the kids didn't feel great after sharing the chicken (said it was chewy) fettuccine (and Clam Chowders - bland). I'd avoid those, but the salmon and calamari was pretty good. The staff generally seemed hard working and were busy and attentive, especially for the area, but poor leadership is the obvious downfall of this establishment. The gentleman who sat us was obviously an owner or manager and was trying to be nice and was busy, but his poor communication with his staff was the problem. Even though we made a reservation in advance for 6pm, we were sat at an obvious makeshift overflow table in what I assume is normally the usual path out of the kitchen, given we were ran into multiple times and our location in the middle of the room and our direct view into the kitchen of several dishes dying in the window. After 20-30 minutes he returned and opened our bottle of wine and was so frantic he almost poured wine for our middle school children. We then gave our easy appetizer order, including an order for two Shirley Temples for the girls. Another 30 minutes and no kids drinks or anything. We had to ask for them and everything else twice, from that point on. He must have forgot to relay anything to a server and no one else ever came to be our dedicated person. An hour in, we finally ordered entrees by flagging down the same man, which took another 45 minutes to arrive. After asking for them, again. Each time he came he had a lame excuse, about broken refrigerators and down computers. Why do people do this? I'm a longtime service industry veteran and you never say these details, you just apologize for the wait and then do whatever it takes to smooth things over. After asking for our bill (twice) and being offered free dessert, that never came, we finally got our bill ($170!) with no comps or anything and we had to finally pay online via Apple Pay because they never came back. Meanwhile the manager guy was literally drinking wine and toasting a large party near us (multiple times) while he kept us waiting... horrible service and it's the manager guy's fault. If you can't manage your table flow properly, you need to take less tables and spread it out. Don't be greedy and ruin our vacation dinner and waste our hard earned money. Our experience was shared (visibly) by several other patrons and I even witnessed an older lady customer having to go into the kitchen to complain and get assistance and was basically in tears. I hope you see this review and take it to heart or this restaurant is doomed.
Be the first to ReplyExperience nothing like Italian
Was recommended this by our hotel. Service mediocre to OK, except when I was going to ask the waitress a question and find her putting lipstick on. How is this acceptable? We ordered and then half way through appetiser our entrees came out. Said we were still eating!! Food went back to sit under heat lamps! So complained to lipstick waitress who didn't apologise, but brought our entrees straight out. Food was rushed. We wanted at least a breather between courses. Not a chance. In Italy you have time to converse, talk and enjoy the whole process. This restaurant may be owned by italians but they have forgot their ethos/heritage. This restaurant is aimed at how Americans perceive an authentic Italian restaurant is. But it isn't. Poor service, food mediocre and even though complained to manager, got a brush off. Shame...
Be the first to ReplyFood was so so
It was for a private party rehearsal dinner, waiters seemed overwhelmed and a bit unorganized. They should have assigned one waiter to particular tables, and perhaps they did but as time went by there were different waiters not knowing who ordered what and bringing drinks out and just giving them to whoever asked for them instead of giving it to the person who ordered it. It was a prix fixed menu, The food was just ok. Wait staff was friendly. Plus’s of the restaurant, they have a big parking lot.
Be the first to ReplyTerrific spot!
What a great meal, great service, great view, great location! In Monterey for two nights, staying at The Jabberwock Inn. Our (wonderful) innkeepers suggested this restaurant and it was exactly right. Food was terrific and the view of the wharf can't be beat!
Be the first to ReplyDelicious food, great quality service with an amazing view
Food and service are great! Would definitely go back, everything we tried on the menu was outstanding and our server made our experience even better. If you go there with children, they do consider them first for ordering and bringing food. Try de specials, you won’t go wrong.
Be the first to ReplyWe simply loved our meal!!!
If you are in Monterey, you should definitively try to this restaurant! Delicious food, excellent quality, and great service. A hidden gem!!! The best meal we had in California during our trip of two weeks. We are coming from Switzerland!
Be the first to Replytruly is a hidden gem
We ended up going here based on a suggestion from a musician who was walking around Monterey carrying guitars and amps...(maybe he played there--don't know) ...so we weren't certain what he based the suggestion on but.........he was right! So glad we came here as the food was completely outstanding. Our server, Michael, was also the best. Answered several questions for us, then he made a couple of suggestions which we ordered, and it could not have been better. I had the Tagliatelle Alla Boscaiola while my wife had the Il Salmone. As previously mentioned in other reviews, it truly is a hidden gem restaurant. Thanks again Michael---you made the experience!
Be the first to ReplyWhat an unexpected surprise
I went last yr in September for my birthday. I made the reservation on a whim, hoping the food would be better than the usual haunts where they crank it out. I was not disappointed. The food was amazing! The staff was terrific & they even accommodated by 60 lb German Shepherd puppy (they knew she was coming. I had left that info in my reservation request). I had the cod special (delicious) & a salad starter. I had to call to find out exactly where they were located. It's off the beaten path, but so worth it & not overrun by tourists! I enjoyed the meal so much, I'm making this a regular stop for celebrating my birthday. In fact I made another reservation about 5 minutes ago. If you're a fan of classic Italian food, homemade pasta & delicious seafood, it's a must try.

Wonderful staff from the Maitre D and wait staff! Greeted and treated us to their restaurant like we were regulars. Food was wonderful and seafood was very fresh. The ravioli very good, clam chowder the best, and the seafood very fresh.
Be the first to ReplyWhen you get poisoned by them go to the hospital!
My wife and I stopped in for lunch on Sunday, November 20. We had been out for the afternoon to start her birthday week celebration and decided to give Osteria a try. Well, all started out well enough, decent calamari and burrata salad, shared. I ordered the sand dabs and was pleasantly surprised. My wife ordered the Ravioli al Ragu. Initially, she enjoyed her meal. I say initially, because ten hours later she awoke with severe nausea and vomiting, interspersed with sweating and chills. Classic food poisoning symptoms. As we had not shared our entrees, we concluded the Ravioli al Ragu the culprit. I called the following morning to warn them about the bad ragu, and left a message, as they were closed for the day. I expected a concerned owner to return my call, to check on my wifes condition. Waited two days, no call. So, my wife calls to speak with the owner to express her surprise at being ignored and concern for other possible victims of this tainted Ragu. The gentleman who answered her call only asked, if she was so ill why she didn't go to the hospital. Well, this entirely inappropriate response, and no follow up call from the owners, led to this one star review. So, dine at your own risk, but if they poison you, be sure to go to the hospital.
Be the first to ReplyGreat Recommendation!
Our Uber driver suggested this place as a nice place for lunch so we tried it out. We were pleasantly surprised by the wonderful lunch with a great view of the bay and the marina. I enjoyed a plate of large Washington State oysters and the seafood fettuccine. My wife enjoyed a nice pear salad and a savory bowl of clams in wine sauce. We shared a piece of the signature lemon pie for dessert. This is a great place to dine in Monterey especially if you want to escape the hordes of tourist traps nearby.

We had an amazing evening here. All the staff were wonderful and made great suggestions for food and drink. We had a delicious meal and lovely wine.
Be the first to ReplyGreat find. Great views. Great food .Great staff.
Delicious freshly prepared food. Great service. Fabulous outdoor balcony location with views over Monterey Harbour complete with wonderful background music.
Be the first to ReplyThe view, the food, the service...!
We stopped in just for drinks and an appetizer, and were welcomed to sit out on the balcony - perfectly warm with the heat lamps. Fantastic view of the wharf and the ocean. Our waiter could not have been more gracious and attentive. We were enjoying ourselves so much we stayed for dinner and dessert! We plan to return, but would definitely sit outside again - both for the view (and because the interior is unfortunately noisy). It is truly a taste of Italy with a coastal view!
Be the first to ReplyAmazing View, Wonderful Service
The view, the view, the view is EVERYTHING here. The owner is charming and the service was great. My food was average - I had the seafood pasta - but the ambiance and again VIEW were worth it. I would come again and just order appetizers and salad and cocktails.

Superb food equaled by the service. There is a reason it gets so many great reviews. Try the San dabs. Only negative is it is very loud inside.
Be the first to ReplyFantastic Clam Chowder and Caesar Salads With A View!
A waitress in Carmel suggested this place well north of the tourist area by the Acquarium. This restaurant sits out on a point overlooking the harbor. We had a table over the harbor and enjoyed watching the water traffic. This is an Italian gem - the waiters and many of the customers speak Italian. The clam chowder is thick and creamy, full of clams and potatoes and very flavorful - some of the best I've had. The caesar salad was large and authentic - delicious dressing and so fresh. My husband really enjoyed his pear and walnut salad too. Beautiful lunch by the harbor! We look forward to our next visit!
Be the first to ReplyIf you didn’t see the beautiful Pacific Ocean, you would think you were eating in Italy!
I cannot imagine a review saying the food was not exceptional? This was the very best Italian restaurant we’ve ever been to! Our hotel recommended it and they were spot on. My husband had the lasagna which was undoubtedly the best lasagna he said he’d ever tasted. The wine was fabulous as well as the whole meal. The owner is very passionate about his food as one will experience talking to him
Be the first to ReplyHighly disappointing
I hate to give such a low rating but we found the food to be almost inedible. I couldn’t eat my meal (fettuccine with cream sauce and chicken) and my husbands seafood pasta was mediocre at best. I enjoyed the burrata appetizer however. I was highly disappointed, especially after paying $25 per pasta dish.

Took a walk on San Carlos beach and Coast Gaurd Pier. Decided to check out the restaurant that was overlooking the water. We went around 3pm. Decided to try something new. We ordered the best bowl of clam chowder and they brought sourdough bread with olive oil and vinegar to dip the bread. Then we order a glass ofred wine and the most delicious bruschetta. To top it off a beautiful fish dish with ange hair pasta. What a lovely late lunch. To top it off YOU CANNOT BEAT THE VIEW of the sea and marina. It will be on our "keeper" list
Be the first to ReplyGreat Location on the Water - a bit away from the Tourists
What a great find, a short walk from all the tourists. Looking out over the boats and bay, what a great spot, south of all the tourists. We had the calamari steak over pasta, wonderful. I think it was the best calamari steak I ever had. Highly recommend.
Be the first to ReplyOur Choice for Best Restaurant During Our 7 Day Trip
We traveled to Monterey, Carmel, Pebble Beach area then to Napa Valley and we chose this as our best meal and experience. Upon entering, you are greeted and immediately feel welcome. The owner/chef took us to our table, talked a bit and turned over to a fantastic staff. We both had pasta dishes which are clearly freshly made and delicious. We also enjoyed appetizers and were treated with dessert for an anniversary celebration. Wine was also good and priced fairly. Can’t get much better then friendly, efficient service, great setting and an excellent meal. Would love to return.
Be the first to ReplyTerrific food but they have some kinks to work out
We had a delicious dinner there. Great menu, great setting. The only issue is that there was a mix up in who was waiting on our table, and it took a long time for them to check on us and then a very long time to get our dinner. I understand they are new and will likely get things worked out, but we were very disappointed to spend an entire hour before getting our dinner on a Sunday night. We also thought the price for the special seafood dinner was very high.
