Placed a huge takeout order with this spot when I was craving Mexican food. This place is definitely a slightly more elevated spot but still casual (though definitely a bit pricier too). My order came very well packaged with a side of taqueria style chips. 1) Complimentary chips and salsa: The chips are so tasty. An oily browned flavor but without the actual oil coating the chip with a hefty snap. The salsa isn't too seasoned but has a pleasant low slow burn. (4.5/5)2) Blue Corn Quesadilla: The blue corn tortilla doesn't seem as pliable as a regular corn tortilla. It had more of a bite but I really enjoyed the slightly sweet flavor of it against the salty Chihuahua cheese. The roasted corn was an especially amazing addition. The browning on the corn really stands out and brings this dish to another level. Only downside is even a quarter of a piece can be pretty hefty. It's a small plate that just comes with 2 pieces but as an appetizer I could see this feeding 2-4 (if you just wanted a smaller tasting). It comes with a side of pico de gallo and sour cream. (4/5)3) Tamales Verdes: The braised chicken looked a little dry and flavorless and by itself it's a very standard tamale. But the serrano salsa is so tasty. It's herby with a slight heat and while the acidity isn't upfront, it brings out all the flavors of the tamales so well. Still a bit pricey for 2 tamales but I can never resist a tamale (3.75/5)4) Ceviche: This was such an interesting ceviche. The seafood was cut pieces of shrimp. I'm not sure if they par-cooked them at all beforehand but each piece was practically creamy. I usually don't like shrimp ceviche as much but they did a wonderful job with it. The kumquat was an especially unique angle since the sweet aromatic citrus just offers another dimension to the dish. I did find it a bit too sweet though since they seem to mix some marinated pieces of kumquat in there along with some candied pieces. The actual marinade is quite sweet too. The tiny cilantro garnish really helped steer this back into a more savory dish and I think a bit more of that would help a ton. (4/5)5) Birria Taco: I honestly thought they forgot the consomme but apparently you need to add 3 dollars for it and that's just a bit sad. It just doesn't quite feel like a birria taco without it. The tortilla is soaked in the beef fat but it still doesn't encompass the fullness of the stew itself. The meat however is delicious with lots of browned bits breaming with meaty flavor. The pickled onions weren't quite acidic enough for me personally but the dish definitely needed them. (3.5/5)Overall, I enjoyed my meal at Oso. Each dish had something a bit off that did bother me but as a whole the flavors were good and everything was very well prepared. I will definitely be ordering from here again if I want a slightly more done up Mexican meal.
