Fantastic omakase in Chicago! I highly recommend.
The service was very lovely, detailed, and each of the items was absolutely delicious. This is a place I'll definitely be back to. The space is pretty, comfortable, and intimate. The service was the right balance between formal and restrained but without being too stuffy.

I like how some of these 1 star reviews are from people that are wannabe Gordon Ramsay's lol. I've been to numerous omakase's and guess what? The chefs don't talk much like Omakase Yume. For me it was not my first rodeo. I've also been to other Michelin restaurants where you don't even meet the chefs or interact with them. To clarify there were no bugs around the restaurant, no hair in the food, and lastly the server did not rush us or the other couple at all. I just wanted to get some of the facts straight since I have more than 1-3 reviews under my belt. The restaurant is small so it is limited seating. I was able to converse with the chef and his wife. She was the main server for us. Fish quality was exceptional. You do have the option of adding on extra pieces to your main menu. They're different prices depending on what they are. Prices are standard and within the usual range for 1 Michelin star restaurants in Chicago. I was here awhile ago but I would go again. I'll post some accurate pictures so that people can get an idea.
Be the first to ReplyElite sushi in an intimate space.
As good as the other top sushi places I've been to. The amuse bouche and dessert were creative and delicious, while the fish in between were simple and excellent. The menu was built to go from light fish (like madai, which I really liked) to fatty fish (otoro) twice, unlike many other omakases which do one long cycle and leaves you with several heavy notes at the end - getting chutoro and otoro in the middle of the meal was a nice change! Strong ending with a fish bone broth (takes 8 hours and over 20 types of fish) and dessert. The server was the chef's wife, which made it feel like we were being treated to a (Michelin-starred) family meal.

nice night out with my bf, we dressed up nice for the occasion (and while i know it isn't a requirement, it's really a bummer when the other two couples in the reservation time slot were dressed like total scrubs ). cute small intimate space, with 6 total spaces per reservation. the food was incredible. maybe the best sushi i've had in Chicago. two things as a negative (aside from the aforementioned attire issue): 1.) it is a pet peeve of mine when a michelin-starred place charges extra for sparkling water... it's a friggin' bottle of san pellegrino for god's sake, especially based on the price of the tasting menu. ridiculous. 2.) it would have been nice if the chef at least introduced himself. i don't need a copious amount of chit chat, but at least a welcome or something. the only thing i heard from him was the name of each fish when he plated them in front of each couple. but the fish made up for the negatives.

In comparison to other omakase restaurants in Chicago, omakase yume definitely has the most traditionally curated menu. I can understand why it is deserving of its star in the city of chicago. I would recommend this place to anyone who hasn't had an omakase before.

Fish and dishes were great; Ambience is starting to feel a little dated and location is a little sleepy; Chef and service was really good; Pricing was higher end and my biggest criticism of price and place was that they excluding more expensive ingredients that would usually be included for the rate. Similar omakase experiences were about same price but includes multiple expensive cuts of tuna, uni and some drinks..
Be the first to ReplyOverall the place was good.
It's definitely an experience and I liked it. The chef definitely approaches sushi with authenticity and sincerity. He puts lots of efforts and attention into each course but I wasn't blown away by the experience. For being a Michelin star restaurant, I was a bit disappointed. I would have enjoyed a lengthier course with more variety. For $225 plus tip and taxes, I would expect something more. Ambiance was intimate and had nice modern Japanese interior setting. The staffs were professional and helpful. I am not sure if I would recommend it to anyone on a budget. I would say there are other restaurants that offer more for less money. Keep up the great work chef!

100% the best sushi I have ever had in the city!! The restaurant is small and intimate! It was a perfect meal, and we left stuffed. It is clear why this is a Michelin starred restaurant!!
Be the first to ReplyMy husband and I came here for an anniversary dinner.
I stalked the website in order to secure the 7 pm time slot (given the intimate seating arrangement) and I'm so glad I did. The fish was outstanding (smoked salmon "sake" being my personal favorite) and even the miso soup was phenomenal. While pricey, the quality of the fish shows with this price tag. Glad to be able to mark this well deserved Michelin Starred restaurant off my list. Chef SangTae has mastered his technique at Omakase Yume.
Be the first to ReplyProbably the highest quality edomae omakase in Chicago.
With that said, the price has really gone up a bit too much. Not sure I can convince myself to pay close to $1k for me and my wife.
Be the first to ReplyWhile traveled, I have not yet made it to Japan.
While experienced in cuisine, I am no expert in sushi. I have, however; endeavored to sample some of the best my budget can afford during my domestic travels, and Chef Sangtae Park is a gracious steward of every Michelin award his warm 6-seater "chef's choice" restaurant in Chicago's west loop has rightfully earned. I enjoyed my first properly prepared chawanmushi (a savory steamed custard), a lovely dish to warm the palate - with delightful bites of crab and topped with mushroom. Fourth course Akami (red tuna topped with negi toro) was a crowd favorite, looked like Christmas, clean flavors, like your favorite roll turned inside-out. I feel Chef's genius shines in simplicity, with the sixth course - Otoro (a piece of fatty tuna topped only in black salt) hitting every note of delight. Again on the ninth - Kanpachi (Amberjack topped with smoked salt, sesame oil, and aonori) pared down and exquisite. Followed by a show of Chef's smoked Sake (salmon) and his own special sauce (it WAS!). The Botan Ebi (sweet shrimp) topped with ebimiso had Cajun-inspired flavors, an exciting twist. By the thirteenth course I was filling and doubtful of cod (tends to be oily), but the Misoyaki was in-fucking-credible. Black cod marinated in miso overnight, grilled to flaky perfection, then served over the perfect ratio of rice to balance every savory bite - I couldn't help myself. Brilliantly followed by the most elegant Miso Soup. For the final sixteenth course, a beautiful serving of Matcha Panna Cotta (giving an Italian nod to the Japanese chawanmushi at the first) finished off the most lovely tasting menu. Money fantastically well spent, at a bargain for tasting menu prices, especially in the Windy City! I was lucky calling a day ahead and catching a seat on cancellation. Highly recommend!

It was a very lovely and intimate experience! I really loved that this space was small with 6 seatings, so you feel special. Each fish was so fresh and high quality. Loved the red snapper! I wanted to eat like 5+ of the same piece. The steamed egg was so deep to start with and perfectly ended with light and balanced dessert. The uni (extra) was so fresh (but also $$)! I know the other reivew didn't like the lack of interaction with the chef, but he was very focused and attentive. This felt more like traditional quiet Japanese omakase experience instead of having a loud in your face Americanized chef. My only minor dislikes are 1. The kimchi puree was overpowering the first sushi piece. 2. Wish there was a diversity in fish choices instead of mostly red snappers and tunas 3. The price is pretty high but it's omakase so what you say! You pay for the high quality food. Overall, I would go here again!

Food wise, great authentic omakase with amazing quality and some with an additional twist. (nothing out of the expectation though) The snapper, amberjack and cod were pretty good. But the service was not great and definitely not up to Michelin star level. The waiter would rush you the whole time and had an attitude of "your needs and requests means nothing to us, whatsoever". Partly ruin the experience for me. Also don't expect to have much interaction with the Chef either. Overall not impressed. There are better options especially for celebration events. If you are all about the food quality then maybe give it a try.

Everything was amazing and we had a flawless 90 min omakase with Chef Park. Each piece was like melt in your mouth butter, traditional but also with a really delicious twist (like kimchi purée and a splash of sesame oil!). Attentive service, with options to add on to your meal and a sake/wine/beer list. Worth every penny and we are so glad we got to enjoy this experience! Chef was nice enough to take a photo with us after the meal as well!
Be the first to ReplyFood- the best sushi I've ever had.
Every single one tasted delightful and fully thought out. Very traditional omakaseService was great. His wife was very attentive. Feedback- the pace can be slower as this is a fine dining and would love a slower pace for us to enjoy the meal. Maybe this is not what he is shooting for, but he could be more interactive given how small the place is.Overall it is an amazing place to get dinner
Be the first to ReplyAs traditional as omakases can get.
This place was amazing and truly a classic. With only six seats in the entire restaurant, you'll have the most intimate experience with Chef Yume and his wife. The green tea didn't really taste like authentic Japanese tea which was a bit disappointing. Such a small thing, what really matters was the quality of the nigiri. Everything was done so precisely, watching a chef dance with the nigiri and forming everything flawlessly. I'd highly recommend this place for someone looking for an authentic omakase experience and a place to appreciate the art. It feels wrong to talk and not to watch him preparing the food, if you're looking for a bit more casual omakase experience with lots of laughing and chit chatting I would recommend Juno.
Be the first to ReplyThe fish was excellent.
The sake options were grand. I highly recommend this place for an Omakase experience.
Be the first to ReplyFirst and foremost, expectations are at an all time high
First and foremost, expectations are at an all time high considering 1.) it's a Michelin star restaurant 2.) it took forever to make a reservation and I waited 2 months to try.The restaurant itself is small and quaint. There are only 6 seatings, 3 times. So no wonder it was a battle to get reservations. The decor is minimal, yet tasteful. Since it's such an intimate space, you get to watch arch chef Park does all of his magic. Every movement was like precise and every piece was like clockwork. It was incredible watching him.Since there were 16 course plus any add-on, I'll just highlight my favorite bites.Hirame: fluke with kimchi purée. This was favorite, not because of the fluke itself, but actually the kimchi purée. The subtle acidity of the kimchi followed by the spice you expect from kimchi. Akami: I don't particularly like tuna, but I think it was the negi toro that helped me like this one a lot. Otoro: it's otoro, what's not to love about this hahaMisoyaki: this grilled miso marinated black cod was perfection. It was perfectly seasoned and grilled. The fish flaked off but each piece was full of flavor. Miso soup: I can honestly say this is probably one of the best miso soup I've ever had, thus far. It was so flavorful and had so much depth to it and there was not much in there but broth. I read the description and realized they used the botan ebi (sweet shrimp) head as the base of their broth, so it makes sense that it was bursting with flavors. Huge huge fan of this. Uni: this is actually my first time eating uni, ever. I was told its Hokkaido uni and it's one of the best. It was buttery to the bite and I tasted hints of sea salt water. It was definitely fresh and different from what I expected it to be.Matcha panna cotta: I probably could eat 100 of these. It was so lightly sweetened, followed by the crunchiness of the matcha cookie, and offset by the red bean.
Be the first to ReplyAn incredible experience.
Chef Park and his family go above and beyond in crafting an incredibly welcoming and delicious dinner. From the choice of ingredients to his technique and careful preparation, it's clear countless hours of methodical practice and reflection have gone into his craft.

I was invited here as a last-minute substitute for one of my higher-valued former colleagues. The third party treating us to this meal had a black card and proceeded to order the entirety of the special menu at the conclusion of the Omakase experience. This pleased me greatly, Omakase Yume was flawless, and I was able to provide some comic relief.

Reservations open 45 days in advance on Resy at 5:00 pm on the dot. By 5:01 all reservations will be gone if you are looking to book a weekend slot, so make sure you are ready to pounce. All of the fish was so fresh that Im sure if you put any of the pieces up to your nose, none of it would smell "fishy". The cleanliness of the everything being made and presented is a show in its own. Every bite tasted unique and you weren't overwhelmed by the same flavor over and over, which I appreciated. The waitress is very knowledgeable and can tel you the origin of where each fish comes from and any significant story that comes with it. The one downside is it's not that much food since more of the "courses" are single nigiri pieces. My one critique is to maybe add 1 California roll as a course just to fill you up a little bit more.

I loved in Tokyo and Kyoto for years and really struggle to find authentic, fresh sushi anywhere in the states. BUT Chef Sangae has done it! The tasting menu featured a delicious progression of flavors and the specials were just as good. 10/10. Also, the ambiance and service are impeccable. Obviously it's a very delicate dining experience. I went alone and it felt very warm, inviting and it was great to watch the Chef work.

The best meal I've ever had. Everything delicately prepared and the freshest sushi I've ever had. Amazing chef and waitress making the experience top notch. Best dinner I've ever had in my life.

This was my first Michelin star Omakase experience, and I'm so happy I got to start my journey with this one. Especially with a Korean chef!! My boyfriend and I were blown away by the effort put into each dish and how the fish simply melts in your mouth. It's a very cozy, romantic setting with only 6 seats next to the bar, so we got to see Chef Park prepare each dish right in front of us. It's a 16-course journey that will actually get you pretty full but still wanting more, just because of how good it is. Some of our favorite courses were the otoro, botan ebi (shrimp), sake salmon, and the ending matcha panna cotta dessert (this thing is literally one of THE best desserts I've ever had at a restaurant). The couples next to us also added on the "special" course items that you can pay for a la carte, including wagyu and beltfish. Definitely a 5/5 magical, romantic omakase experience!
