Obelix Chicago Reviews from The Last Year
Great food, excellent service.
Food and service excellent, menu selection makes you want to order one of everything. Our server was very well informed.
I was so looking forward to this dining experience.
I love their sister restaurant. My friend had promised me beef Wellington for my birthday. I was overjoyed to learn Obelix had a Wellington meal for two. We waited weeks for our reservation. We arrived promptly at 5pm. The waitress explained the menu and the fact that the Wellington took 45 minutes, my friend a professional chef, immediately submitted our order (trusting the waitress to space the meal out appropriately). We then had drinks (which she delivered including the fruit fly). I immediately pointed it out to her and she clucked at me. Yuck. The drink was replaced without an apology. The bread, appetizer and salad arrived promptly (they were all delicious) then we waited and waited. Finally at 6:10 the Wellington arrived. The crust was soggy (had it soaked up the gravy) the meat was dry (too much time under the heat lamp), fries were cold, and they apparently were rationing the gravy. It was so disappointing bad and I could hardly eat it. They are better French restaurants in town. This is a real skip

Obélix was fantastic! white asparagus was very nice, the French onion soup was probably the best I've ever had, salade Lyonnaise was so good, the dorade, and the choucroute were all phenomenal. I'm french...this place is spot on. Highly recommended, the server was really sweet and attentive, and most importantly, didn't push us along. Timing of dishes (and we had a lot for 2 people) was unhurried. it was a great experience in every way, will definitely be back! Merci Obélix!
I was absolutely floored when I arrived to Obélix that
I was absolutely floored when I arrived to Obélix that afternoon; after a trip to Taqueria Chingon earlier that day, I was excited to try the Poilevey brothers new restaurant. By all accounts, it is a departure from the traditional Le Bouchon, which their family owned and is well reveered throughout Chicago but has trotted along a pretty well worn path. Obélix combines several different flavors while retaining a French based cuisine; it's this combination that sounds irrestible, like the foie gras taco and this incredible pastor hollandaise, rendered al pastor fat from the aforementioned taco joint they own. I parked my vehicle nearby, payin the street parking, getting there at 4:40. I had spoke to Obélix staff just days before and was assured I didn't need a reservation and I could walk in especially during the opening hours. I couldn't make a resevration as I did not have my flight plans yet and had a meeting earlier that day; I figured walking in would be the best and most respectful way to approach. Fortunately, my flight was early, so early I would be able to try Taqueria Chingon earlier (as mentioned) and have a good amount of time before moving on to Obélix. As 5:00 approached, I walked from Mr. Beef (pictures only as it was closed but how could I resist a couple poses next to The Bear's location, eh?) and noticed the restaurant action of tables being prepared, wait staff bustling, and wine glasses being wiped... missing. I walked along Huron St baffled but made my way to the entrance and pulled at the door at 5:01. Closed. I yanked again, like maybe it was a test to see if I was formidable enough to have their 10-Day Dry-Aged Duck Breast w/ Mole Veracruz. I guess not. Closed. I pulled up my phone and sure enough, it was listed as open on Google, no Facebook, and on their very active Instagram there no mention of the place being closed, not a post or an IG story. I was confused as when I first noticed their Instaram page they had announced a half off all champagne for lunch; I checked every so often and it was an active page. Just now, April 5th, they reposted natalia.vehera's story of a fine meal she had. It looks good but I can't eat phone. I was pretty dissappointed as I flew in specifially to eat here on my way to eat at other places in Indianapolis and Cincinnati. Suddenly, the door opened. Not the main door, but a side door next to what looks like a garage entrance. An employee came out and said "Oh hi, we're closed." to which I responded "Oh, that's odd, I thought-" and was cut off with "Oh, it's a Super Bowl party, yea, sorry." The employee scurried away and closed the door behind them (I'm not gonna identify them, even with pronouns, b/c it's not about this person, even if the interaction left something to be desired). I was stunned. I'm not mad they had a Super Bowl party, hell, that sounds great, but surely this couldn't be a last minute thing, and even if so, there was no announcement on any of their social media accounts nor was I made aware of this when I called earlier. I was completely dissappointed, especially since I won't be able to come back in time to try them again. I'll probably be back at some point, and I'll most likely love it very much, but this experience really soured my expectations from the operations team at Obélix, especially for someone who flew in from Texas to try this venue.
Poor service, out of many menu items, menu description
Poor service, out of many menu items, menu description isn't the same as what is served, the strangest duck confit I've ever encountered. Very disappointed; would never go back.
I was really excited to come here for my anniversary but
I was really excited to come here for my anniversary but left feeling underwhelmed. I think a big part of it was one server who didn't really seem to want to be at work; wasn't around much; didn't acknowledge our special occasion; and didn't really provide much guidance on our ordering. The lamb rib was a seasoned well but a little too burnt, French onion soup was huge and delicious, probably the best value on the whole menu. The duck salad was tasty, though the duck was very similar to very salty corned beef in both taste and texture. The frites were very competent and the macaroni was huge and very decadent. It was way too much food and we brought home most of the duck, fried and macaroni. Wine was also excellent and my French 75 was prepared well. The butter that came with the bread was also amazing. If you are a person who spends +$60 on random meals through the week then this place would probably be more of a 4 star place but definitely not for special occasions: you'd be better served down the block at Indeane, where every meal is special, or any lettuce entertain you place in the city.
A great Monday lunch at Obelix
We've had dinner here several times and always loved it but this was our first visit for lunch. We shared some lovely east coast oysters and then both ordered from the prix fixe menu. The potato and leek soup was lovely, really lovely, as was the beet salad. My wife had the chicken roti and thoroughly enjoyed it, I had the quiche and it was fantastic, the best quiche I ever ate. We both had cheese for desert and all in all we thought the prix fixe meal was a bargain for $42. We dined on Monday and on Monday's it half off any champagne or sparkling wine, so we splurged and got a bottle of Billicart Salmon. The wait staff at Obelix is top notch, great service and very knowledgable but approachable. We had lunch here after seeing the Picasso show at the Art Institute and all in all, this was a wonderful way to spend a Monday.
good food
Super nice staff, very good food. Turbot, gougeres, mac & cheese, gem salad all good. The carrot dish is one of the best things I've ever had, anywhere. 4% "staff retention" charge is obnoxious; tired of paying restaurants' workers for them. Nice lighting. It's a bit cramped, chairs could be more comfortable.
If you have a young child, may as well find another
If you have a young child, may as well find another restaurant because Obelix is not accommodating and borderline discriminatory. Out of courtesy, I added a comment that our 7 month old son would be joining us (ideally in stroller, but could be flexible with his car seat too). The restaurant called, made a big deal out of the fact that we didn't book a reservation for "3", said they'd move our table, and then called back saying they were too busy (11:30a reservation) to keep the reservation. Only later option was after 1p. Stuck up restaurant and policy.

Very expensive and lots of Duck! Espresso martini and filet were yummy. Place was small so be sure to snag a reservation
Wow what a place!! Super small, but cool place so make sure
Wow what a place!! Super small, but cool place so make sure you get reservations. Food is absolutely delicious and staff so friendly. We had a sampling menu so not sure if all these things are on the main menu but regardless, if these are amazing, they all are! My favorite was the Beef Wellington. When I tell you it was the most tender steak I've ever had, I'm lying. Beef Wellington is my all time favorite dish and while I wish it wasn't pre-cut, I can hardly complain. You can literally eat it with just a fork. It was that tender. The Ratatouille was amazing too. Sauces were on point and presentation amazing. The other highlight was the Paris Breast Desert was to die for. I'll be dreaming of it for a long time!
It's crazy to see how the reviews are mostly divided
It's crazy to see how the reviews are mostly divided between 5 star reviews and 1-2 star reviews. There are not a lot in between. We had reservations for dinner at 7:45 pm this past Saturday, it was packed when we got there. You can find street parking close by, this is a safe area. When we walked in, the group in front of us was still waiting on their table. Our reservation was delayed by about 5-10 mins. Just FYI, the tables are closed to each other so you can literally hear the conversations from both sides of you. We ordered a plethora of different items to try. We had stuffed gougeres, tete de cochon, foie gras and crispy rice, 10 day dry-aged duck breast, choucroute royale, and mille feuille. -stuffed gougeres 5 - this tasted like broccoli and cheddar soup but in a pastry form. It was very good. You get French cheese, parmesan sauce, and truffle. -complimentary bread and butter 1 - I found the bread pieces to be too hard. It would have been nicer if it was warm and soft. Instead it's like cutting into a rock. I took the leftover bread home, microwaved one piece, and it was good. -tete de cochon 5 - crispy pork head. Don't worry it doesn't really come out like a big pork head on the plate. It comes out to like a pulled pork form. When you receive the dish, grab a piece of perilla leaf. You're going to make a sandwich with it. You're going to put the crispy pork head meat, some of the banchan dishes, and plum glaze on top or bottom. -foie gras and crispy rice 5 - basically a sushi bite. Crispy rice has a good crunch. The seared foie gras otoro tuna melts in your mouth. You'll get that Japanese mustard after taste in your mouth. -10 day dry-aged duck breast 5 . Duck was prepared medium rare. Make sure you dip your meat in the sauce for added flavor. -choucroute royale 5 - $55 is still big enough to share between two people. You'll get wagyu pastrami, duck sausage, kielbasa, potatoes, and pieces of ham hock. You get homemade sauerkraut as well as condiments to pair with your meat. Worth getting. -mille feuille 5 - this is a caramelized puff pastry with coffee, caramel, banana, and cocoa nib. Beautiful presentation. The pastry is easy to cut with a spoon but still maintains a hardened texture to give you a soft crunch. Those bananas don't taste like regular bananas. They're more like a sweet snack. Dessert itself is a 5 but I was disappointed that it wasn't a free birthday treat. When I made the reservation, I put birthday for special occasions. Overall, I would rate this about a 4. Reasons being because the comp bread was hard and the dessert wasn't free. Usually, if it's your birthday, there would be a comp dessert.
I absolutely love Obelix.
I am addicted to their bread service and dedication to delicious food, presentation and variety of dishes. I highly recommend their steak tartare, escargot, duck lyonnaise salad and lobster omelette.

It might be hard to snag a spot here but it's for good reason. Everything is delicious and the staff is friendly, attentive and helpful. The space is bright and airy and while some seating is a bit close, it's still very comfortable. I will definitely be back!!

This place was excellent! Came here with another couple for dinner after having it on our mutual lists of places to try. Food was excellent, service was attentive without being pushy or snobby and prices were very reasonable. Will definitely come back here for our French Fix!
Might be the best French restaurant in Chicagoland.
I love stuff wrapped in pastry and their stuffed stuff is delicious.
We can't get enough of the brunch at Obelix.
Give me Champagne, truffles, foie gras, & caviar all day, every day Their hospitality is wonderful and the dishes are always lights out. Chef Alex went out of his way to make our recent experience superb and we ate our way through the menu! The best part is if you go to Monday brunch, all of their champagne bottles are HALF OFF!
What a delightful place! Delicious food, amazing service-
What a delightful place! Delicious food, amazing service- who are well versed in the various types of food/drinks they serve.. For an unknown place that we haven't dined in at, I was beyond pleased! Special shout out to our waitress from Oklahoma!! Sorry we didn't catch her name, but she put the extra Star in that place!!

Hi, I have a polo bar reservation currently for sale for this sunday the 23rd for 4 people. I know someone personally who is a connect I cannot say how, but 24 hours would still not be doable even with that.
I can however also get you a reservation to I Sodi & Via Carota within 24 hours if you are interested!

Just head to I Sodi for some European glamour!
As Pete Wells put it: "I Sodi seems not to have fully assimilated into the United States. It exists in its own extraterritorial jurisdiction, like the headquarters of the United Nations."
