This meal was actually like so beyond good, my friends and I could not stop talking about it, it was like a healing experience lol the bitter melon soup brought back so many childhood memories of my aunt making that for me when I was sick, just absolutely amazing comforting food. We're going back again tomorrow!
Always be my favorite place.
This place reminds me a lot about food back home. The chicken is really soft and tender. Peanut sauce was always amazing. The cashier was really great in giving recommendations about which one to order. And the inside of the place also feels so much like home.
Yum! Discovered this gem with some friends last month.
Great quality fresh food. We will definitely be back.

Yep! It's a must visit, best to go when they are busy, for some reason the food is better when they are hopping! Bring friends.. bring enemies, you'll leave as friends!!

Trying this spot seemed like a must when in Portland and I'm glad I did. I got the classic Khao Man Gai which was very good. I loved the sauce that came with it too. The service was quick too. There is free street parking outside. No complaints.
Thai style chicken rice.
Order first then find your own seat. Cool little Thai Style shop.
The food here is fantastic.
We eat here 3 or 4 times per month. The quality of the food and more importantly the consistency of the food are spot on. Everything tastes fresh and clean. While it is a simple dish it is addictive. We love the food here and come by often! The location is small but also has outdoor seats. The chilli oil is no joke! Keep up the great food and service Nongs!
A friend of mine is in town visiting from Mexico and she
A friend of mine is in town visiting from Mexico and she said she wanted to have Asian food for lunch. She specifically said she wanted "soup and rice". So my husband and I decided to take her to Nong's because we haven't been in awhile and it's my husband's favorite spot. It was pretty busy when we showed up around 1pm but luckily we were able to find a table to sit right away. It's a walk-up and order/bus your own table type of restaurant and they give you a number to place at your table. Water is also self-serve. The restaurant is small and has Asian music playing in the background. Staff was super patient and super friendly. Everyone was so happy, chatting amongst one another and laughing. The food is so good and such great comfort food. My husband and I bought got white meat with our meal and my friend got dark meat. Our dishes also came with a small bowl of broth. The rice is also cooked in the broth so it has a little flavor but each of our plates came with a soybean/ginger sauce for the chicken that everyone loves. My friend loved it so much that she purchased 2 bottles to take home with her to Mexico.
THE best chicken and rice I ever had !! aka KHAO MAN GAI
THE best chicken and rice I ever had !! aka KHAO MAN GAI also got the braised pork (KHAO KHA MUU), equally delicious. the homemade sauces are bombb and definitely elevate the dishes. Also amazing story of the owner -- from an immigrant with $70 to a small food cart to now multiple restaurants -- so proud! Also big kudos to being able to expand and still keep the food authenticity. Food came out so quick! Appreciate the little details too such as free yummy tea and the cute packaging on the wrapper and bag (: A must eat if you're in Portland!!
Really enjoyed lunch here, the free tea and accoutrements
Really enjoyed lunch here, the free tea and accoutrements were nice touches. I went straight home and tried to replicate the sauce.
My first time going to this place and I was very impressed
My first time going to this place and I was very impressed with the food served here. It was so good that I went back the following day. Treat yourself to a amazing tasting meal. I just can't seem to get enough of it. My last to go order was three items, dinner and lunch for the next day. The Khao Man Gai is absolutely amazing. The sauce that comes with it is so delicious. The chicken salad rolls are also delicious and comes with a peanut sauce.
I've been to Thailand over 15x.
. let me tell you, the chicken and rice plate here SLAPS! The chicken is really soft and the sauce that goes with the meal is superb! I recommend ordering fried chicken skin and Thai ice green tea too! Seems like they created the Thai ice green tea themselves because I've never had it in Thailand before and I traveled the entire map up and down. Forgot to take food pics cus I was so hungry!
A Portland classic - I enjoyed my meal.
Its simple but the sauce really brings it together. I loved the atmosphere; it felt homey and simple in the best way.

One of the best places in Portland! I love places that have one specialty and do it really well. Their chicken and rice is fantastic. The sauces it comes with are really good and go so well with the rice. I got the larger size it is such a good deal. For a few dollars more you get double the food. I called ahead and was able to bypass the line and get my food in minutes. I definitely recommend coming here to try their specialty!
Had to try this place after seeing it all over Instagram
Had to try this place after seeing it all over Instagram and on every "Portland's best restaurants" rankings. It did not disappoint. So much flavor and the chicken was so tender. We all got the classic khao man gai but the peanut chicken looked amazing as well!! The only complaint - no veggies with this meal. You get a few cucumber slices but for $15, I would have really liked a side of steamed vegetables. Service was fantastic and atmosphere is nothing special but feels authentic. It's a must try spot for sure!
If you're looking for a delicious and satisfying meal in
If you're looking for a delicious and satisfying meal in Portland, Nong's Khao Man Gai is a must-try. This popular Thai restaurant, with locations in both southeast Portland's Buckman neighborhood and downtown, specializes in Khao Man Gai, a classic chicken and rice dish. But Nong's does it way beyond basic. The story behind Nong's Khao Man Gai is as heartwarming as the food itself. In 2003, Nong Poonsukwattana arrived in Portland with just $70 and a suitcase full of dreams. Having grown up in bustling Bangkok, Thailand, surrounded by the comforting aroma of her mother's cooking, Nong knew food was her passion. Today, Nong's Khao Man Gai has blossomed from a food cart to a beloved Portland institution. Their Khao Man Gai is what they're all about, and it's easy to see why. The chicken is perfectly cooked, juicy and flavorful. The rice is fragrant and beautifully seasoned. The real magic touch comes with Nong's signature sauce, a unique and addictive complement to the dish. Do not let the seeming simplicity of these dishes that comes across in the photos fool you. We tried nearly everything and the complexity of flavors in each bite was inspiring to put it mildly. More Than Just Chicken and Rice While the Khao Man Gai is the star, Nong's offers a few other options. They have a vegetarian version of their Khao Man Gai, and their menu includes a side of soup to complete the meal. Nong's Khao Man Gai is a casual eatery with a food cart vibe. If you're looking for a comforting, flavorful, and affordable meal in Portland, Nong's Khao Man Gai is a great choice. Their signature Khao Man Gai is definitely worth a try, and you might just find yourself becoming a regular! Sweet Sips of Heaven Be sure to save room for their drinks! While they offer classic Thai iced tea, Nong's also has a Thai iced tea milkshake on the menu. Imagine your favorite childhood milkshake, but instead of chocolate or strawberry, it's infused with the rich, smooth taste of Thai tea. It's a symphony of sweet and creamy with a touch of caffeine-kick, the perfect way to end your meal.

Overall Thoughts: I had high hopes for this popular spot, but was ultimately disappointed. It specializes in its namesake, khao man gai, which I ordered and is basically the Thai version of Chinese Hainanese chicken rice. However, the chicken was disappointingly dry. The soup was light and aromatic, but I wish the flavor/saltiness was stronger. I also got a side of peanut sauce, which was a good move that gave additional flavor to the chicken/rice. I liked both sauces a lot-- the peanut sauce was creamy and robust in flavor, and the ginger sauce that came with the dish was lighter and tangy. If only the chicken were more tender, this dish would've been very solid. The prices were reasonable ($15), and I was quite full afterwards even with the normal portion size. It was quite crowded at 12:30pm on a weekday, but I was able to find one of the few empty stool seats facing the window. There was no line when I came and the food came out fast, but by the time I finished around 1pm, the line grew longer and there were people waiting for seats. Overall, they could've had an off-dish/day, but I personally don't think the food here is worth the hype. -- Price (relative to peers): 4.3/5 Food: 3.2/5 Ambience: 4.6/5 Service: 4.5/5 Overall Value: 3.5/5
After 10+ years of hearing about Nong's and saying we'd try
After 10+ years of hearing about Nong's and saying we'd try it next time during each visit to Portland, my husband and I finally decided to give in. I had high expectations for this place because of all the hype around it, but was not impressed. The rice was overcooked and the chicken was bland. The sauce was good though and necessary to give the dish life. My husband ordered the chicken rice and peanut sauce dish. It's your typical peanut sauce but the dish comes with broccoli, which was also overcooked and very limp. Indoor seating is limited, they have covered picnic tables outside, and street parking only.
Sauce is amazing! Small place but super good! I'd recommend
Sauce is amazing! Small place but super good! I'd recommend checking it out if you are in Portland!
Amazing comfort food, reasonably priced.
I felt like I was at an aunties house. Service was great, and loved the decor! We will always come back here!

Hey @FluffyStar64, thanks for the question! When you place your bid the amount gets transferred in a deposit account, the second you either cancel your bid or a few minutes after the bid expires the funds are moved back into your main account from where you can refund it to your payment method or use for other transactions.
