Make no mistake, this is a very expensive Omakase. Right at the reservation website, you’re instantly charged $300. And at this price point, it must be perfect.
The ambiance is quite fancy once you can find the place. It’s quite hidden so there is someone outside to greet you in case you can’t find it. What’s confusing is a few stores down, there is another Omakase in plain view which I am thinking of trying. The storefront there definitely looks better. Here, there is no storefront and you have to be guided to a labyrinth which takes you to the restaurant. Basically, this used to be someone’s apartment.
The waiting lounge is nice and quite fancy. They won’t let you forget you are in a fancy place with everyone dressed formally in business suits and the bar is the type you see in James Bond movies. The dinner did not start in time and we had to wait about 10 minutes before we are escorted to the main dining room.
The main dining room can seat 9 ppl but depending on the night, they will take some chairs away and on this night, it was less than capacity which means more elbow room. The chairs are quite plush and comfy. Possibly the most comfy Omakase seats I ever sat on. The decor is a nice blend of traditional mixed with contemporary. As with most Omakases, there is never a window around and so it’s the usual stuffiness. Make no mistake, the counter is quite expensive and made of quality wood and the old-styled lantern light covers add to the atmosphere. The pop songs playing in the background may seem out of place but it looks like they’re trying to target the younger crowd vs the banker type as this night shows.
There is only one chef with his assistants in the background. The chef introduced himself before the meal to everyone and is quite friendly, probably the most friendly chef I ever met. As he chats with everyone, it’s easy to overlook he is serving so many ppl all by himself when at most Omakases, 3 to 4 is the max for a chef. Talking and preparing is second nature to him and he never missed a beat in his preparation.
All the niceties are here. Warm towel, finger wipe, napkin, and prompt service.
I found the cooked dishes were quite good and better than the sushi portion of the meal. The sushi was of good quality but small and somewhat generic. There were no star dish during this meal and it was all quite forgettable to me.
I also decided on some very expensive liquor but they do not even pour in front of me. When it’s more than a 100 a sip, they should pour in front of me. A very big miss here.
In all, it’s not a $300+ meal unless you enjoy being pampered but I look for a balance of ambiance, food, and service and they only succeed in the ambiance. There are many exceptional Omakases in the city that cost only $200 including tip and tax and some even less and they all have a star dish but here, all you get is an expensive bill with nothing much to cheer about.
