This is an incredible restaurant.
The staff are lovely, the atmosphere is nice, and the food is delicious, an interesting fusion of Caribbean and Japanese. We had the Lazy Goat Ramen and the Yaki-Udon, both were generous portions and very very flavorful. The ramen was maybe the best of ever eaten. We will definitely be coming back and trying out the rest of the menu.
Be the first to ReplyHoly Sh*t!!! This place is 10 Stars.
. If your in the Brixton area, please do your taste buds a favor and take them to Nanban. Created by MasterChef Tim Anderson, this place specializes in Japanese soul food. Nanban has a lot of options (very very vegan friendly too) from apps, ramen, main dishes and more. Recommend getting one the small plates sampler, as it gives you a little bit Of everything. The small plates we tried were tempura Mackerel (excellent and drizzled w/a delish balsamic sauce) that was bought right across the street from the Brixton Market), Some fried plantains w/curry sauce and the very delicious KFJ, which I believe stands for Kentucky Fried Jackfruit. Yes, jackfruit, and I swear you will believe it was chicken your eating as you literally cannot taste the difference. I was blow away by this one, it looked like lightly breaded chicken nuggets, but it was jackfruit, just made to perfection. For our entrees, we got the Angry Birds, which were chicken wings that are nice/spicy and chips (steak fries). Also tried the fried rice for our entree which had: prawns, bacon, and salmon roe on top; this plate had so much flavor, but it all blends well and is a nice balance with the wings as the rice is not spicy. Cool ambience inside and played very cool soul music the whole night, which we loved. This is a food lovers paradise!

Went there for their famous ramen, I got the leopard and I can't say I was disappointed ! Some of the best ramen I've had since my last trip to Japan. The broth was delicious, and the noodles nicely cooked. The staff was friendly, the place clean and overall we had a great time. Only thing was that our seats were somewhat uncomfortable to sit in but the food made up for it easily.Price wise, if you've got the chance it's better to go during the week as their ramen are about half cheaper than during the weekend. (12£50 for the cheapest ramen bowl). Would definitely go back to try out their deserts this time around.
Be the first to ReplyBrixton is fast becoming my favourite place to dine in
Brixton is fast becoming my favourite place to dine in London. Today I went to Nanban, restaurant of former MasterChef winner Tim Anderson serving up "barbaric" Japanese food with more than a little influence from its Caribbean Brixton surroundings. I ordered two things:- Lazy Goat with added Onsen egg- Ackee & saltfish korokkeThe ackee & saltfish korokke arrived first, a breaded croquette with chunks of saltfish and a dark tangy sauce drizzled on top. I have a mixed opinion on saltfish but the potato, ackee and sauce gave this enough balance to avoid being overpowering. The portion is also well judged because as a starter this had the potential to be a tad filling.Shortly after polishing off the korokke the main event arrived. Without hesitation, the Lazy Goat was one of the best bowls of ramen I've ever had. In one dish this tells you everything that Nanban is about. Ramen and a lot of Japanese food in general is about subtlety and the enjoyment of gentle flavours. Nanban's mission is to take the method and ideals of Japanese cuisine and inject some added soul from other lands. There is so much flavour going on: spiciness, sourness, a slight bittersweet caramelisation from the shallots and a delicious rich umami flavour from the tea pickled egg. I'm not the biggest fan of bamboo shoots but the ones here soaked in some sort of scotch bonnet marinade were wonderful. The goat is cooked to perfection with the right amount of chew, my only suggestion is that perhaps a touch more fat would have made this the tiniest bit better. Also worth noting is that there is relatively little broth but it isn't missed. It's far from being a traditional ramen but is a delicate reminder for today's world that collaboration between different cultures can produce great things.Couldn't recommend the ramen dish more.
Be the first to ReplyFusion is what you get here-and fused well, it is.
Soba, hot and cold, fresh tempura from the Brixton Market. The service by Italians is superior, the ambience is multi-everything you can think of, and the pear sake worth staying over for another day.Lovely.
Be the first to ReplyVery nice food, reasonably priced, discretionary service
Very nice food, reasonably priced, discretionary service charge, tables are too close to each other and feels a bit suffocating. There is additional seating upstairs which seems more comfortable. They have some kind of happy hour and the food menu is quite good. Only three starts because of the lack of space and the close proximity between tables
Be the first to ReplyExcellent ramen.
Comfortable setting. Friendly service. I came for the lunch special from 12-2:30 which is also available for happy hour from 5-6 on weekdays. £7 for a bowl of ramen + toppings sold separately. This worked out to be how much their normal ramen is but the best thing was customizing it for your preference.I didn't realize mine already came with half an egg when I ordered so I got a whole tea flavored egg which was delicious. The chili soaked bamboo shoots were very spicy but a nice addition to my non-spicy broth. I had the garlic tonkatsu broth which was full of umami and delightful garlic chips. Thin noodles cooked perfectly along with huge cuts of pork belly. Rich and flavorful.I had a peek at the cocktail menu which was very tempting. Loads of original cocktails with twists on original faves. The couple next to me each got their chicken karaage lunch special and the serves were huge, along with a big bowl of rice each and pickled vegetables. The ambiance was very lively and cozy at the same time. Nothing fancy but well cared for booths upstairs and tables downstairs along with the bar. I enjoyed the quick, friendly service. Although I don't live or work near here, it's definitely worth the time to commute and pay full price for an amazing bowl of ramen.
Be the first to ReplyThe lazy goat ramen is phenomenal.
Worth travelling from around London for. Amazing swing soul music tops it off. Great spot, I'll be back.
Be the first to ReplyAgain, lovely food but seriously.
The service here is continuously abysmal. Every single time we come here, the servers seem really ignorant of what their jobs are. We finished our starters and no one came to collect the dishes. The server then comes around with the mains and waits while we clear the table for her. Seriously, this is her job. Not ours. Then after we finish the mains, the plates just linger. Alongside the growing collection of empty beer and wine bottles. We end up piling them up on the edge of the table but no one collects them. People, your job isn't just too bring food. You need to take stuff away too. Management need to better train their staff. We ended up removing the optional service. Our waitress didn't even bother to ask why. Obviously, she just doesn't care!!
Be the first to ReplyDisclaimer: This review is solely based on the food
Disclaimer: This review is solely based on the food (creativity, taste, presentation), as I've not set foot in the restaurant itself since the negative experience I had there when Nanban first opened. That said, I feel that was harsh and the place was new and likely didn't have their shizz together, hence the update. Nanban makes my favorite ramen in London, full stop. Not the most traditional, or cheapest - but the most mouth-wateringly delicious, rich and succulent stuff I've ever tasted. The one simply known as "The Leopard" consisting of "chilli-sesame pork broth with burnt garlic oil, pork belly, scotch bonnet pickled bamboo shoots, garlic chips, Parmesan, and tea pickled egg"?! Seriously, that's tough to beat, and it's just one of many truly intense and inventive ramen combos they've got going on. So yeah, Nanban have now stolen my palette and are a frequent deliveroo option for me. Maybe I'll try booking again and see if they can grab my heart next time.
