Murata Restaurant Portland Reviews from The Last Year

Made reservations for lunch ( a must since it gets crowded quickly). and parked in the adjacent structure (2hrs validation from restaurant). Was craving high quality sushi and Murata delivered! The sake was outstanding. Have been here several times. Excellent restaurant all the way around.

The food was pretty good, the service was very nice, and the ambiance was calm. It is best if you get a reservation beforehand. We sat at the bar, it was nice. The reason I rated it 4/5 stars is because other sushi spots I have been to focus on presentation too, and these plates weren't as nicely presented, but they tasted good. It is pricey too. Overall, I enjoyed it

Excellent service Food is fabulous- fish is fresh and cooked items are delicious. They also have a tatami section but requires early reservations.
Fabulous, best we've had anytime in our lives.
Better make reservations, as there were only four tables that weren't already reserved at lunch

Will definitely be back! I didn't really like the fatty tuna but other options we picked were delicious! I had the Eel.

This place is on my Mount Rushmore of sushi places in the US. Easily the best in the Northwest.
The chicken in the bento box (takeout) was dry.
This was an amateur move. Suggestion to the business owner / chef: If you're going to serve chicken breast meat instead of chicken thigh / leg in your bento box, at least brine the chicken breast so it's juicy and not dry.
i have been going to murata since the early 2000's.
LOVE THEIR FOOD! the staff is so friendly and welcoming. i highly recommend dining here.
There are no half stars, so I feel odd about the 4.
It was better than 4 but not a 5. A traditional Japanese restaurant on the ground floor of an office building. The warm wood furnishings blended nicely with all the glass frontage. Counter service for sushi, as well as small private dining rooms that I definitely want to check out on another visit. Murata's service, ambience and *most* of the food we tried were stellar. Not quite 5 star for us entirely because of the rice served along with our meals. I ordered unaju, served in a 3 tiered set of dishes with a light salad in one, 3 good sized slices of unagi in another, and the driest rice ever served at a decent Japanese restaurant in the third. I needed every bit of the kabayaki sauce to make it even partly edible. Sent most of the rice back with other empty dishes. My dining companion commented that we should bring baggies of our own rice cooked at home next time. My dining companion had a combo set of salmon shioyaki plus sushi. The salmon was nicely grilled and flavorful. Luckily the sushi rice is not the same. All the fush cuts were excellent. The hotate (scallop) as well as the shimaaji were excellent. A slice of fresh cantaloupe rounded out the meal with a light freshness. The price was very reasonable for the service and quality of food (rice excepted) and we will be going back and likely trying to get sushi counter seats.

Traditional style Japanese sushi house w/ a large menu of fish and other non sushi items as well. We tried a lot of things, and liked almost all of them. I will just point out the things we didn't like first: 1). The pork katsu was a bit dry, and 2). the wagyu nigiri which was pretty pricey was overcooked quite a bit, and 3). It was very hard to get our servers attention. As we tried so many dishes I'll just describe my favorites. All of the fish was fresh and good, especially the saba which was thick & meaty and anago which was perfectly broiled and lightly sauced. They also have several dishes you don't see too often at sushi restaurants such as kurodai. The chicken karaage breading was very good, but strangely not the oyster karaage so much. The ebi I was a bit disappointed by as it looked so fresh and plump in the display case but when it came out it just looked and tasted like at every other place, not sure if he used different one or what. The tempura batter was also phenomenal too - so light and crunchy. The chawanmushi was also tasty and interesting - like a savory little egg custard cup w/ cooked seafood or mushrooms. Dessert was also very tasty - sweet red bean ice cream and a little strawberry cream puff cake thing. A light and refreshing end to a monstrous feast. Btw, they don't really do rolls here as it's more traditional Japanese if that's what your looking for. I also really like the clean wood decor, and they have tatami rooms for larger parties as well.

This was such a great find! Visiting from LA and I wanted to make sure we got to eat some sushi while in Portland. I found this place and was able to make a reservation by calling. The parking situation is a bit interesting. There is a structure attached to the building the restaurant was in and when we went in for dinner we paid while going into the structure, and then there are 2 receipts that it gives you. One is to be left on the dashboard of your car and the other you can give to your server and they give you cash back for paying for parking! Thought that was interesting. The servers were all very kind and helpful There is a wide range of options on the menu and everything we got was so good! I ordered the chawanmushi which was really good! We ordered our meals from the selected dinner options. They came with a salad, miso soup, rice, and some tsukemonos. My boyfriend got the combination entree with the tonkatsu and sushi combination. The tonkatsu was a good portion size but tasted like just another tonkatsu I have had. The sushi came with a variety of nigiri and a tekka maki (tuna cut roll). I ordered the single entree with the sashimi. This sashimi was one of the best I have ever had, outside of Japan! The cuts were very thick and all of the fish tasted so fresh. We also ordered some salmon, otoro (fatty tuna), and hamachi (yellow tail) nigiri and wow they were all so good! The toro was the favorite for how buttery and soft it was. We loved all the sushi so much we came back aging for lunch on our trip! I would definitely stop here if you like sushi. The prices were all very reasonable for the quality of food!
great nigiri, loved how fresh the fish was.
loved the menu diversity as well, the steak was really good. split on if i'd go again for the price point, but definitely a must try if you have money to spare
Quality fish and great service.
Would make a reservation. Parking may be tough as well.

Great authentic Japanese food and ambience, beautiful serving ware/plates from Japan but a little pricey. Get the chawanmushi and grilled dinner steak sushi set, you won't regret it.

Again, you're asking a New Yorker about sushi; overall, the food was just average. However, the service was great, and they were friendly in accommodating me without a reservation.

AMAZING FOOD!!! I had the two entree meal and I'm blown away!! The meal comes with delightful tiny dishes of a salmon crudo, pickled things, edamame, asparagus, salad, and miso soup. The teriyaki salmon was unbelievably good, so moist and tender. And the sashimi was excellent and so fresh. Delightfully friendly service topped off a truly great meal. I'll be back the next time I'm in Portland.
Best sushi in PDX, service is exceptional.
It reminds me of Japan everytime I eat here. Very staff and chefs

Best Japanese in Portland! I was a regular ~20 years ago, but tonight was the first time back in a long time. The quality and service are still stellar. I tried the Zosui (type of rice soup) for the first time and am now a raving fan. The crab chunks are ample. The various sushi we ordered were very fresh. You know the it's top notch when the rice is room temperature, which is the opposite of Fred Meyer, sushi-boat venues, and anything low end. Their version of Mackerel was a mouth-watering balance of oily, tender, and crispy. Only the Beaverton Korean restaurant on the second floor of a grocery store does it better. And the portion here is very ample, maybe too much. I did not care for the Iceberg salad, but this is the same at any Japanese restaurant. The sponge cake and gooey ice cream was a hit, but the chocolate sauce tasted like Hershey's. Parking can be tough at lunch, but they validate. Just a gem of a place.
The food and service at Murata were top shelf.
Everything we ordered was fresh and probably best of the best. We got seated in one of the private rooms and the atmosphere was awesome. It was the closest thing I'll ever get to eating in Japan. I will forever recommend this restaurant if you want fresh amazing sushi.
Reservations highly recommended.
A good chance you will not get a table for dinner if you do not. The tables are filled and yet the servers remain composed & treat everyone with professional kindness. Tatami rooms are fun for four folks if you are willing to take off your shoes ~ wear socks! The quality of the menu & service is worth the price.
I realized the secret.
Their food is great. But the service matters on Friday. When I visit Murata on weekday dinner, there was no problem at all. We made a reservation for Friday dinner because it was good, and the problem happens. The servers basically want you dine as soon as possible and get out. They come too frequently to ask if there is more items to order, and picks up dishes even if I was not finished the dish. They ask a lot about "may I take this dish out?", and it was eminent that even I was working on the dish. Moreover, they ask to bring dessert even before we finish the main dish. At that time, we were there for only 25 mins. For a Friday dinner that we expect to enjoy the atmosphere and having a talk in a good mood. Yes, the food quality is excellent, and the location and interior design is great, but what they want is us to finish dine as soon as possible (less than 30 min) even if we reserved the table more than a week ago. We intentionally did not have last two pieces of nigiri to talk more each other, and left the place in 40min of total dining. What a shame. Expect $50 per person dinner must be finished in 30min if you do not intentionally leave food on the table (they keep ask even if we have food left and slowly working on that). Go there on weekdays. That might be much better. They better to enlarge the space (yes, move to other location) if they want to get more customers in a given time, not like kicking out those who dining quietly.
Was in town for work and wanted to have a nice meal to end
Was in town for work and wanted to have a nice meal to end the week. We fortunately made a reservation for dinner - and so we were allowed to go in for dinner. They gave us a Tatami room bc we had a larger party. Most of us order the the Chirasi Zushi set. One of us ordered the 3 Fish set and a salmon Chirasi. We were given an appetizer as well as Miso soup (red miso-the better type of miso) The ingredients are definitely higher end and very "curated". The service is comfortable but very very good. Just the right level of comfort and attention to detail. The servers definitely make it a great dining experience. 5-stars (a rare one from me)

I have a notice stating that my bid has been accepted and is awaiting transfer. The reservation is for the 18th, but the “moderator” said he will confirm booking by the 28th. Is this an indicator that I may not have a reservation?

Hey @EvocativeFold67, welcome to appointmenttrader! Once the reservation is in your portfolio, you definitely own the timeslot, the review team would not have approved the trade if the reservation wasn't confirmed - so you are going :-) Judging from your post you bid today and are going tomorrow - don't worry as long as you initiated the name transfer, you are good - the transfer service has to work with the opening hours of the reservation team of the respective venue. You will likely see the transfer confirmation a couple hours before your reservation time.
