The Jewel of Waikiki indeed!
Too bad that the Michelin guide doesn't award Hawai'i because this elegant venue would undouble snatch a star. This was my second time eating at Mugen and it keeps getting better! The level of elegance in service, quality in food, presentation and (mostly) hospitality has been raised to the next level in Waikiki. The hotel and restaurant market themselves as a Jewel. Nothing could be more true: A GEM right in Honolulu. Highly recommended for special occasions, intimate and romantic meals and especially for discerning foodies. PS make reservations for dinner because seating is very limited.

I don't really write reviews... but this experience has stuck with me for a long time and I felt compelled to write a review to showcase how wonderful it was. To note, my dinner was at Mugen on April 6th, 2022 for 6:30pm.. not the date noted above. I have been to many Michelin restaurants, one star to three stars given my current city I am living in. This has been the most more enjoyable experience. Firstly, the ambience was intimate, upscale, but most importantly laid back. I didn't feel the air of arrogance or prestige. Probably why I love Hawaii. The restaurant was beautiful especially the artwork/paintings. Secondly, the staff was stupendous. Most if not all were locals which gave created the perfect vibe especially when you want to support livelihoods of locals. The staff bent over backwards to accommodate us and I never felt more taken care of. I once filled my own water cup and they apologized for having inconvenienced me which was further from the truth. From the hostess, waitresses, and chefs; all top notched! Everyone invited questions to be asked, allowed us to come up to the plating area, and gave us additional samples to eat. I have to give my thanks to Matthew especially, as he gave us a personal tour of the premises after the dinner which was above and beyond! Thirdly, the food was delicious. I still have the menu card from that night. Sasanian Osetra caviar, Dutch asparagus, Aohata, Parisienne Gnocchi, Amadai, Meyer lemon, Liberty Duck, Miyazaki A5, Laura Chenel, Kona Coffee, and Matcha. I very much urge you to take a good look at this place. It was my favorite place in Hawaii to eat if you can splurge. I would choose this currently over any third star Michelin at currently (Too bad they don't rate in Hawaii otherwise this certainly would get it). I would certainly come back. If the staff reads this, thank you again. FYI, you have an potential investor!

As requested, we notified Mugen 48 hours in advance that we were coming. Then, we confirmed again on Open Table the day before. When we showed up at the restaurant the next day for our reservation, the hotel doorman asked what we were looking for. We said "the restaurant." "The restrooms?" he asked, showing a look of displeasure. "No, the restaurant," I said. "Oh, Mugen!" he said. They're closed for the night. He promised that we would hear from the restaurant management. I gave him my email address and then never heard anything after that.

Our dinner was Mugen was absolutely stellar in every way. From the fantastic service to the chefโs every beautifully presented, innovative, and delicious creations, my dining companions and I were astounded at the level of excellence this intimate restaurant offered and how little acclaim it has had to date! When meeting him, Chef Yamaguchi was gracious and humble. Among our party it was agreed that this restaurant falls among the ranks of French Laundry and Michael Mina (and some argued that it exceeded these veteran Michelin starred venues)!

This restaurant serves French Japanese cuisine- 8 course set menu. There are currently two seatings at 5pm and 7:30pm. Book a reservation as far in advance as possible to get your preferred time and date.
Staff were warm, friendly and knowledgeable. Reception welcomed us as soon as we walked in. We were seated promptly. Wait staff introduced themselves, handed out drink menus, wine list and offered water. House made cocktails were outstanding. Wine list was extensive. Every course was simply amazing. Unique flavors complemented each other. Both the food and plates they were served in were works of art. Servings were adequate. Don't expect to be stuffed. The restaurant offers extra truffles and/or A-5 Wagyu beef for an extra charge. We opted for the waghu beef- well worth it. Service was excellent. Timing between courses was just right. Staff explained every dish when served and answered questions. They refilled water and wine glasses as necessary. A unique dining experience in Waikiki. This restaurant is located in the Espacio Hotel. Valet parking is free.
Amazing intimate experience!
My friends and I went to Mugen for a birthday dinner and boy was it a treat!
From start to finish the service and the food was amazing. Believe it or not I was actually stuffed by the time dessert came out.
The menu changes seasonally, and I can't wait to go back again!
The Newest & The Best
My wife picked Mugen as the special restaurant to celebrate her birthday. True, it was three days before her actual birthday( she loves to cook for both of our birthdays ) but the stars were aligned and Mugen was her choice. French/ Japanese is something we love and itโs a rarity on Oahu. We were told there was some architectural work to be done but the room that is part of the kitchen was completed. There are only two seatings. We selected the 7:30. Mugen has not been officially reviewed on Oahu but both Yelp and Open Table have a Number of reviews. Our greeting was very special. A super charming young lady who also was our waitress greeted us in the best aloha spirit weโve ever had. Her style was addicting making for a truly relaxing evening. Our host for the evening was Lee Kamimura the General Manager. His style was so endearing that we actually felt like were were having a fine dinning experience in his home. Once he found out that we were former Wine Educators from NYC( teaching wine programs for over 25 years) it seemed that his amazing 500 bottle wine cellar was at our disposal. Just kidding but we did order and taste some very exciting wines. The menu was eight courses ranging from a a taste to a full portion. Each unbelievable dish was created by the Executive Chef Jason Yamaguchi and his single sous chef. Being highly versed in wine we look for contrasting flavors, bouquets of equally delicate and layered scents and colors that are impressionistic to the eyes. We got all of this and a lot more. What also made the entire eventing so memorable was that total relaxing feeling that our hosts generated. We canโt wait to go back. . Although located in the Espacio Hotel, possibly the most expensive hotel in Hawaii we never once felt overwhelmed.
The following is the menu that we had the other evening.
Sasanian Osetra Caviar:
Mochi Blini. Vanilla Bean Panna Cotta. Cured Yolk.
Red Sea Crab:
Yuzu Kosho Aioli. Edamame Coulis. Black Sesame Tuile.
Heirloom Beet:
Salt Roasted Beets. XO Plum. Purple Haze Goat Cheese. Fine Herbs.
Parisienne Gnoochi
Kona Lobster. Comte Espuma. Coppa.
Pineapple Sorbet:
Shiso Oil
Colorado Lamb:
Negi Panisse.
Umami Demi.
Celery Root.
Ykare.
Milk & Honey:
Honey Comb.
Fennel Sugar Cane
Butterscotch Pot De Creme: Chantilly Cream. Hazelnut Streusel. Maui Carmel Sauce
Outstanding experience
This place is new and very delicious. The food is a chef tasting which brings so many flavors and textures. Once we arrived, there is valet parking and you are guided to your seat. The chef tasting is a 9 course meal which was phenomenal and the reservation is for 2 hours. Overall we were very impressed and personally think this restaurant is better than the French Laundry. Great service and outstanding experience, thank you!
