My Opinion of Mister Jiu's
I would not choose to come here again. We came here to try the duck. We walked up a steep hill to get to this place, then had to sit at the bar, and they ran out of duck so we couldn't order it. The food we got was just ok. Service from the bartenders was decent though.

We have a great time at Mister Jiu's. Our waiter, a lovely, vibrant young Thai lady took great care of us and we loved all her recommendations, food and drinks. The place also has interesting decor, it's relaxing and a lot of fun. Highly recommended for a good night out.

I was extremely excited to eat at this restaurant until I went through all the complicated hoops to make the reservation. After some back and forth, I had to cancel our reservation 24 hours in advance due to my guest's changing plans and they still charged me $257 for a dinner I never had. I am furious.
Be the first to ReplyA restaurant well worth patronizing; only a little more evolution needed.
Good experience all around. The attractive setting, our friendly and attentive waiter, the libations, and almost all courses were so enjoyable that we will return, maybe to try the ala carte menu at the bar. The stars of the show are the Peking duck, walnut shrimp, dumpling soup and dessert. Suggestions: the new arrangement whereby a diner must buy an add-on to the tasting menu results in way too much food for two diners. Incorporate the add-ons into the tasting menu? Offer 1/2 add-ons? The kohlrabi was less tasty than other dishes. The waitress could be less eager about collecting plates before all diners are finished with the course. All in all, well done!
Be the first to ReplyExceptional delicious Chinese fusion
Outstanding food. The trout baked in salt was full of flavour. The book Chou superb with an overlay of sesame oil that made it sing. The dumplings stuffed full of deliciousness. An creative extension of Chinese. Taking it to a new American style of excellence

With a James beard award under their belt, you would think this place would flawless. Yet, in my experience with them not everything in the kitchen turned as planned. But it is in getting back up that, and correcting a small mishap did this place really shine! All the food was superb, the service excellent. Pricey, yes but you get more than what you pay for in the total value and experience. Impossible to get a reservation but a fantastic dining experience all together. Highly recommended and will eat here again( if reservations allow) soon!

The greatest Duck I have ever had at a restaurant. Unreal. It takes awhile — ask for it as soon as you walk in. Everything else was great too.
Be the first to ReplyAwesome dinner! Awesome staff!
Are you looking for fine dining in the heart of one of the most beautiful square blocks of SF's Chinatown? Are you ready to be greeted with smiles, kind hospitality, great recommendations, and timely service? You are at the right place! This *gourmet* Chinese restaurant will leave you wanting to return as soon as possible, so you can try more! Our server, Adam, was a sweetheart, attending to our every need, providing terrific tips on the D-licious cocktails and scrumptious food, and assisted by a team of smiling chefs, including Marcello, who made appearances periodically with sizzling dishes and smiles of pride. No wonder! This team knows how to please. The duck, eggplant, and scallion cakes were huge hits as well as the cocktails and exquisite wine list. The decor is a lovely mix of mid-century modern with exotic, tropical touches--an urban oasis that elevates your aesthetic mind while thrilling your tastebuds! We're definitely coming back for more and so grateful for the fantastic time! Thanks to the entire team at Mister Jiu's!
Be the first to ReplyA Ducking Disaster
This was an incredibly disappointing experience at a restaurant that in no way shape or form is deserving of a Michelin star. The disaster of the evening was the Peking duck. Served at a lukewarm temperature, the skin lacked any sort of crispiness and the fat was not rendered under the skin. It was over smoked to the point of being inedible. The meat was tough and tasted like it had been sitting out for hours beforehand. The manager insisted that this is the “style” of duck they serve. If this is their take on the dish, then I would suggest the chef go back to culinary school and try again. Our only mistake was not running in the other direction upon reading the other consistently terrible reviews regarding this dish.
Be the first to ReplyAmazing food, excellent service
We went to celebrate a special birthday and tried several dishes. The trout was a hit, and beautifully prepared. Cocktails are all very interesting and fun to try. Service was attentive and it was an all around great experience.
Be the first to ReplyDisappointed!
This was booked well in advance. Arrived a little early and the person checking us in did not wait to be told our name, just said ‘ are you Ahmed?’, no I am not! She found the booking once she listened. As we were early she asked us to go up for a drink at the upstairs bar and they would send a text message when the table was ready. The girl making the cocktails was very nice and very busy, but did everything with a smile. As we did not receive a text message we did go down after 35/40 minutes to see what was going on. It was very obvious she had forgotten us. We were ushered to our table and received very speedy service. The menu was limited and there was no taster menu, the wine prices were extortionate. The waitress did suggest some dishes and we had three. The portions were small - and we are English so not accustomed to USA portions. The food was tasty but very expensive for what you got. Our food was delivered within 30 minutes so it was a very speedy meal. Not recommend, not Michelin star quality and nothing special but overpriced.

We were lucky enough a book a table for 4 a week before we arrived in SF. Usually the place books up several weeks in advance, but I think I got a spot shortly after someone else cancelled. We arrived early for our reservation but they gladly sat us early. The first thing I noticed was how bustling the place was, especially the bar area. Moments after we sat the server brought us some complimentary sparkling wine which I was unexpected but welcomed. We ordered the following: - Shrimp Chips - Very good. Very light. - White Peach - OK. Nice peaches, but I didn’t really understand the dish. Sort of puzzling because I didn’t know how if it was an appetizer as raw fruit is rare in Chinese restaurant cuisine - Hot & Sour - Very good. Nothing close to a regular hot & sour soup, but had it’s own tomato based identity and brought it’s own hot and sour personality, which I liked - Green Onion Pancake - OK. Another interesting take where most of the onion flavour comes from the dip, which was neat. Pancake itself was fried a bit too hard so it was hard to cut and share - Squid Ink Wonton - Good, but because of the wonton. I found the wonton to be average, but it was the squid that was prepared just right (not rubbery). It’s a very spicy dish too, which takes away from the delicateness of the entire dish - Quail - Excellent. Probably my favourite dish of the night. With a nod to traditionally prepared quail, this wan s way better. First, it’s expertly deboned so the only bones are in the drumstick and wing. The meat was incredibly mild, meaty and tender that I didn’t even recognize as quail. Third, the sauce used to baste the skin was fantastic. Great dish. Service was OK. The complimentary drinks were a nice surprise to start, but the server seemed awkward and impersonal much of the night. Overall, I’m still glad we visited. The menu was certainly inventive and original, so I give full marks for that. Some of the dishes didn’t hit the mark with me, and the service could have been better.
Be the first to ReplyTerrible service and food was nothing special. Very over priced.
Firstly we were kept waiting at a Michelin star restaurant ! The wait staff were very unattentive. In fact….one was quite rude. We did not have the same server throughout the experience. Plus the food was very over priced and nothing tasted special at all. We had to ask for the table to be cleared and our dishes arrived at different times. Very disappointing indeed. I would not pay even a quarter of the price for this restaurant. Do not bother to go.
Be the first to ReplyOVERHYPED,OVERPRICED OVER IT!
I have never been so disappointed by a Michelin star recommendation. Not only was the food way overpriced, it was mediocre at best.
I ordered the Char Siu Pork (at $45), Chicken Wings (at $15) , Char Siu Chow Fun (at $24), Jiu's Hoho Housemade Pantry and Charcuterie: Spiced Salami (Start of Autumn cocktail (at $15)
On top of the mediocre food, the staff rushed us to order and we were told the kitchen does not take single orders and only wants the complete ticket. I wanted to order two things to start off with and continuously add to my order but instead I was forced to list off an absurd amount based on what the wait staff recommended I ordered for a party of two (she had recommended I order 5 different dishes) I ended up ordering a number of them in hopes that I didn't order too much or too little because they did not want to add anything else to the ticket.
The only reason I'm giving it a two-star is because the food was edible. You are much better off exploring the rest of Chinatown SF and getting it from the cheaper ma and pa shops. The food is equally as salty and less expensive
TLDR: Went to Michelin star restaurant only to be disappointed in the service and food. The food itself wasn't bad to but it definitely was not worth $140+ I would say it was mediocre at best. The plating was immaculate so it made for a good photoshoot. This is definitely going into the list of things I regret spending my money on.
Chinese Elegance & Beyond
The entrance is subtle, contemporary and you can't help but to want to enter. The hostess friendly, the staff attentive. The warm and dark bar seats singles with comfort, no need to feel awkward when alone. The open kitchen you pass is spacious and entertaining without food smells, steam or anything to detract from the creative visuals of the chefs.
The menu is varied for smaller plates or larger plated depending on the group size. Menu options are creative and the food absolutely delicious! There are some vegan options but not enough protein vegan dishes - mostly salad and veggie side dishes. I didn't care that night....it was time to let the discipline go a little.
Stuffed quail and both of their dumplings are outstanding. The winter salad bit small but delicate and beautifully presented. This is a great restaurant when you feel the need to experience your meal, not just eat it! (Loved the french white too).
Doesn't meet expectations of a Michelin star restaurant
We were intrigued at the thought of dinner here as we remembered the space from wedding banquets in the past. We booked a few weeks in advance as reservations seem recommended.
When we arrived, the host seemed confused by the number of people in our party, and I suspect they made a mistake on the reservation. They said they needed to "set up the table" so we waited for about five minutes before they showed us to a dark table in the very corner of the restaurant closest to the kitchen. It was obviously meant only for four people and they hastily added a chair to the end of it. This is absolutely unacceptable for a restaurant that is striving for a certain caliber and with a "$$$$" denomination. Of course, the entire meal became a juggling act for us and the waiters as they struggled to place dishes down.
The Food:
We were not particularly wowed. We were particularly disappointed with the "Shui Jiao" dumplings ($18 for 5) made of scallop, shrimp, cod, and dill. The filling was overly processed and was a dense lump. The flavours were indistinguishable - if I didn't already know the ingredients I would've never been able to guess as all I could discern was a vaguely "seafood" flavour. A really poor quality dish at a 5-star price range that really has no place on the menu other than for profit-margin. We also tried a noodle dish that I can't remember the name of, but was okay but oddly lacking in noodles. The roast duck was probably our favorite of the night and was interestingly presented. It comes with a pate that was very good. But the wrappers had taken on a hard, dry quality, similar to when you leave them out for too long or if they were too old. The hardened edges made it more difficult to roll and somewhat unpleasant to chew. The Dutch Crunch BBQ pork buns were okay and not a standout. The desserts were quite good, if a little small.
Overall, I can see the food being "new" and "interesting" for those who aren't familiar with Chinese cuisine. But if you know it well, I'm not sure the quality of the dishes were good enough to warrant a visit. This is a good place for those who want a sanitized version of it and aren't feeling too adventurous.
The Service:
Our waiter was very friendly and knowledgeable (and the only one from hosts to manager to busboys who smiled at us this evening). She clearly knew the menu well and broke it down for us nicely. I will agree with others that the waiters tend to recommend more than what is likely needed. We ordered less than what she recommended and ended up with leftovers. I say go with your instincts on this one, because you could always order more if needed.
A delicate fusion of flavors
The salt baked trout in lotus leaf served with charred scallion and roe was out if this world . Party of three ordered, moo shu mushroom , pork buns Crab cheong fun and the trout and it was just right We had no room for dessert ! I would go there stein to try out other dishes .
Be the first to ReplyGreat Decor, But Far Too Noisy!
We loved the ambiance, with the glass wall between the kitchen and the dining room. And the service was excellent. But the dangerously high noise level made it very hard to talk. The food was ok, but not exceptional.
Be the first to ReplyGreat Experience
Our family had a wonderful time at Mr. Jiu’s. Dining family style with numerous small dishes to share makes for a great experience. The food was very good, but the lazy Susan and the tapas style sharing was the best part. Selection was great. Flavor was fine, but I expected a bit more from a Michelin star restaurant. Overall great time though, and we’d highly recommend.
Be the first to ReplyI was not impressed.
For a Michelin Star restaurant, I really was not impressed. I expect every thing that I ordered to be good or great. I wished I could say that was true, but it wasn't. Some of the stuff was really good (beef tendon, bok choy chao mien), some were OK (the duck & quail), and some were just so so (the dutch crunch BBQ pork buns, so dry we left one uneaten)
The part that bothered me the most was that it was noisy. So noisy that I could not hear my son who was speaking to me sitting directly across.
Service was also OK, but not great. We had leftover roast duck that we told them to pack up for us. But that the last saw of it. Never bought the leftover duck (a major portion).
Price was not that expensive, but regardless, I still expect all the foods to be great in a Michelin Star restaurant, not just a few dishes.
Amazing experience
We were able to walk in on a Saturday night, with no reservation, wait 30 minutes and have dinner at the bar. People book at least 2 months in advance is what we were told. We had exceptional service from the hostess to the bar keeps, and even the guys bringing the food. Eating at the bar was a great experience. We had the sampling menu and asked our server to choose other must haves. The food was exceptional in presentation and taste. The pork buns were out of this world. We ordered way too much however made one unfortunate homeless person a bit happier, even for a moment. The restaurant is definitely world class dining however the prices seemed very fair. Overall we were thrilled with our experience and would highly recommend a stop for anyone in San Francisco. I hear Mister Jiu's has 3 Michelin Stars.
Be the first to ReplyGreat Chinatown hotspot
My sister and I dined here for a girl's dinner. We ordered some drinks, and ALL the small bites. We had an 8:30PM seating and had no problem getting everything we ordered. It was fun to have many small dishes keep coming out. We enjoyed the shrimp chips, pork buns, mushroom bao, scallion pancake, turnip cakes, and urchin cheong fun.
The shrimp chips were an awesome bite, so simple but delicious. The pork buns were very sweet, but I like that. I could have eaten another order of those! The mushroom bao were slightly under-seasoned but our server provided some salt for us. The turnip cakes were okay, nothing special but got our veg in. The scallion pancake was our biggest surprise - SO tasty and the texture was addictive. The cheong fun was our most anticipated dish. It was neither hot nor cold and did not have much flavor apart from the urchin. But, it let you taste the sea. It is definitely worth ordering for the experience.
Overall we had standout service and I have no complaints here. The atmosphere was also wonderful with the open kitchen and gorgeous dining room.
Chinatown is a must in San Francisco and this was a great way to complete the experience.
