Ordered to-go tonight & they didn't have bread and they claimed it's "complementary" although it's listed as apart of the meal on the MENU THEN I got home and noticed they didn't even provide any utensils in the bag (thankfully I have in my home or is that complementary too) & lastly, the to-go salmon is TINY maybe if you dine in it's better

Monday - January 16, 2023 (MLK Day Celebrated): My Sister & I were treated to lunch by My Daughter @this southern cuisine restaurant/black-owned establishment that we certainly wanted to support. The restaurant is normally closed on Monday; but was open in honor of MLK Day & their special menu offerings were three of Dr. King's favorite meals. Our menu items consisted of: Cornbread, Fried Catfish, Fried Chicken, Coleslaw, Collard Greens, Macaroni & Cheese. The food was really delicious (nicely seasoned, etc). Owner (Ms. Norman Jean Darden) and Her Staff provided warm & attentive customer service throughout. Hopefully, we will be able to return for another dining experience soon with other attendees.

We'd been going to Miss Mamie's Spoonbread Too for the past 3 years and love it! It's our favorite southern cooking restaurant in the city. I've tried a number of different entrees, but my favorite is the meatloaf, Mac n cheese, and collard greens. For dessert, the peach cobbler is incredible. You must give it a try.

I was craving soul food and was sold on this place as historic contender in the Best Soul Food in NYC category. I arrived for an early dinner with a friend on a Saturday. Upon arrival, we were immediately seated and there was only one other group dining at that time with one service member visible. We were automatically brought cold cornbread which I only nibbled on. The Famous Seafood Gumbo was a good appetizer with a moderate of spicy taste; definitely the Shining Star of my dining experience. I opted for the Southern Fried Chicken and Rib Combo which came with two pieces of chicken and two ribs covered in BBQ sauce. The meats were seasoned well but I would have liked more seasoning in the sides of collard greens and Macaroni & Cheese. I would not recommend the Peach Cobbler because the flavor was not there but the Red Velvet was better maybe even really good when served at room temperature and not cold.We came in at the perfect time and was able to enjoy our food without having to constantly hunt down the server. Everyone after us was not so lucky and waited too long for cold food or incorrect orders. The kitchen even struggled to get the orders to the many delivery food drivers. Lack of staffing is an issue that would need to be overcame in order for me to return.

I ate here last weekend but I'm just now getting around to reviewing it. My first time eating here was 4 years ago when I was just visiting the area. And I remembered the food being amazing then. Now, the food is just okay. It didn't rise to my expectations. And although the servers were very friendly, the service was painfully slow. The restaurant still has a nice peaceful vibe that I like, and it's refreshing. Even though I was disappointed, I'm still willing to give this place another try because it could've just been an off day.
Be the first to ReplyHad early dinner in the inside dining room.
Simple but elegant decor and interesting family photos. Hard to choose but we had the big sampler, pork chops, iced tea, and peach cobbler. All were nicely presented, perfectly prepared, and delicious. Service was friendly and considerate. Look forward to returning soon.

Miss Mamie's Spoonbread Too! OMG! I travel to New York over Labor Day weekend and I was craving soul food so I Googled soul food restaurants in Harlem because there are so many to choose from. I am not a naive Californian I know all soul restaurants are not rated equal. When I walked into the restaurant I was thrown off there was no one in the restaurant besides one guy sitting in the corner drinking a soda then, I was greeted by a tall handsome young man who did not share my same complexion, if you know what I mean needless to say I was worried. I ordered a drink to relax, my sunrise cocktail was good. I ordered fried chicken, greens and Mac and cheese with a side of cornbread. For desert I ordered coconut cake. I am still dreaming about those greens, made with smoke turkey, they were sweet and tangy from the vinegar. Lord help me the cornbread was warm and not too sweet, just the way my grandmother made. The Mac and cheese was delicious! When I visit New York again I will return for some of the best soul food I've ever eaten. Service was a bit slow, I'm sure it was due to th frying the delicious crispy chicken fresh. Oh and the coconut cake, was sublime.

Ordered a take out b/c I was sick of eating unseasoned food downtown. I have to be honest, I was worried b/c the dining room was pretty empty when I arrived to pick up my order, but the dinner I got was dope. The fried catfish was very well seasoned, the collards looked pretty plain but had great flavor and the mac and cheese was decent.

Went for the first time to celebrate Harlem Restaurant Week and I def would recommend to return!! Had the seafood gumbo followed by smothered pork chops (sides were mashed potatoes and collard greens) ending with lemon pound cake!! Everything was absolutely AMAZINGthe best thing about this spot is it feels like home. The decor, the plates, the menu selections, the service. The food literally taste like your grand mom made it and that's a great thing. Yes, there may be a wait but please understand that it's the owner herself doing everything from bussing tables to bartending and taking orders. She even fulfills the take out orders. Please be patient as it's so worth it! We enjoyed our visit very much and got a ton of food for only 39 dollars!!
Be the first to ReplyGreat improvement over my last visit.
I wrote a somewhat harsh review (sometime in 2020) because the service was absolutely horrible. However, I recently visited, and the service was leaps and bounds better than my previous visit two years ago. During this visit, I found everything (especially the service) to be on point. Although I ordered the delicious sampler, I just wished that a couple more shrimp and/or one more rib was included in the sampler. That said, the mac n cheese and the peach cobbler were pretty d*mn tasty. Also, the collard greens (always my go-to at a Soul Food restaurant) were beautifully seasoned. Looking forward to revisiting again. One very, very, very small complaint (which is not even a big deal). The restaurant could expand its Motown playlist. While I love the Temptations My Girl, I probably heard it at least three times during my meal. Eh, who knows maybe someone in the kitchen is a huge fan of the Temptations.

We had a wonderful Friday night dinner, from the first hunk of golden cornbread to the perfect peach cobbler, with excellent jerk chicken in between! We were also honored to be checked on from time to time by Ms. Norma Jean Darden herself, the iconic owner: a former top model who once walked in one of the most epic fashion shows of all time, the Battle of Versailles. The perfect evening of comfort food on a winter's night + that special touch of NYC glamour! We loved the festive Valentine's Day decor as well. I can't wait to return and try brunch!

We tried this restaurant tonight for the first time and had a lovely dinner on the patio, which is set up very well for outdoor dining. We ordered the smothered chicken, fried catfish, collard greens, mac and cheese, cornbread stuffing, spinach, and peach cobbler. All were delightful. The service was also excellent. One staff member even very kindly moved an extra table onto the patio so we could eat outside. It was a pleasure to meet the owner, who was an extremely gracious host.Three stars on Yelp simply don't do this restaurant justice. To those considering, please don't be deterred by any online reviews, and support this wonderful neighborhood institution!

I say this respectfully and with love, because I fully support Black owned businesses and want themTo win. And I highly respect the tradition of soul food, but I was disappointed with my meal. I hope this review is helpful, as this was my first time at the restaurant. But I always wanted to try because I know the presence it has had in Harlem. The restaurant's aesthetic is very warm and the photos along the walls brought so much love to the room and they were dope to view as I awaited my take out order. But I ordered the smothered Turkey wings, cornbread stuffing and collard greens. My Turkey wings were very tough, and were extremely difficult to eat and the gravy had the consistency of gravy that was previously cold and then reheated. A good portion but the taste and texture were not good. The sides were okay, but again I felt the way it was due to the way it was reheated . And though service was kind of slow; I understand the understaffing many restaurants are experiencing during this challenging time. But this review is strictly for the food.

Miss Mamies Spoonbread lives up to the hype and you should go too!We started with the seafood soup which reminded me of gumbo. The soup itself was well seasoned and had a lot of meat and seafood in it. The soup is basically gumbo and if you like gumbo, this is a must have. Not many places in NYC do this right. For a drink I had the spooonbread punch which is a mix of different juices together. The drink tasted like a fancy Hawaiian Punch. I really enjoyed it but if you don't like sweet drinks, this one is not for you. The first thing we got was the sampler platter which had shrimp, ribs, fried chicken, macaroni and cheese, collards greens, and corn pudding. You can choose to get the shrimp either fried or grilled and we got the grilled. Everything on this plate was exceptional and delicious. 1. The shrimp was well seasoned, large, and not over cooked. 2. The ribs fell off the bone and were not oversauced. 3. The fried chicken was so good, I was tempted to order a whole plate of it. It was crispy and also very juicy and whatever they brined it with, gave the chicken a very good taste.3. The Mac and cheese was surprisingly well seasoned and not dry, and the noodles were well cooked and didn't break apart. Probably some of the best Mac and cheese I've had in a while. 4. The collard greens were made right and were not too sour, bitter, or too sweet. I'll admit this isn't my favorite item but this place did it right. 5. The corn pudding is actually just their cornbread which was decent but nothing to call home about. We ended up getting two desserts:1. Homemade Peach Cobbler - the description says that this is the best in NYC and I believe it. I haven't had cobbler this good since I was in Texas. Peaches are in season and they were soft and delicious and with the combined crust and brown sugar on top and in the cobbler, it was the perfect Summer treat.2. Banana pudding - says banana pudding is the real deal! Unlike the bread pudding you find out magnolias and other places in New York City this bread pudding has more pudding to nilla wafer ratio. Their pudding includes a meringue crust on top. This type of bread pudding is typically found down south and this place has really perfected it for New York City, when you're there don't skip it!

Arrived at opening, however they were not ready to receive customers. Hostess was very nice as she gave the option to sit and wait or return. There was a limited selection of meats/fish. Collards were seasoned well. Macaroni and cheese was flavorful. Candied yams were good. Chicken could have used more seasoning. It also tasted like it was cooked in old oil or it was refried.
Be the first to ReplyFelt right at home at Miss Mamie's.
Owner was so welcoming, server was helpful, and the food was DELICIOUS! Fried shrimp and plantains were my personal favorite, but everything was great- recommend the sampler to take advantage of trying 3 of the unique sides.
Be the first to ReplyWas a very meh experience.
Food arrived very cold and not very great quality. I would however dine in person to try the food fresh from the kitchen.
Be the first to ReplyThe food is delicious classic soul food.
I love the ribs and Mac and cheese best! But the smothered chicken is also wonderful. I would suggest going in person instead of ordering online. But either way, expect to wait a bit. It's worth it!
