Merchant Roots San Francisco Reviews from The Last Year
A very intimate dining experience with a carefully thought
A very intimate dining experience with a carefully thought out and well executed menu. great service and a unique wine pairing to boot. Customer to staff ratio is 1:1. We came for Pasta & Stories and it was fantastic. Don't think twice , book your next meal here. I will highlight a few dishes but want to keep the rest a surprise.

I found them on Instagram and instantly booked a reservation. I was drawn to their fun themes. I have to admit I'm not a huge pasta person like I used to be bc it's usually on the heavier side. However I still booked pasta story bc I was dying to try this place. The restaurant is on the smaller on the side, but still cozy and well decorated. I was surprised by how light and well put together each dish was. It wasn't heavy at all to my surprise, and I found myself wanting more. I didn't like my tomato slushie, but I truly enjoyed the rest. It was whimsical and delicious. They did the pho so well also! I booked color story after eating 3 dishes haha. I also felt like a judge from Chopped because each chef comes out to talk about their dish. I can't wait for more themes.
Food was great, but wine pairing was awful, super tiny
Food was great, but wine pairing was awful, super tiny pours. The only time they seemed to talk to you and care was when it was time to close out the bill. A little more enthusiasm and better pours would go a long way. We've been here a few times before, hopefully not our last but may not do the wine pairing anymore.
Came for Pasta and Stories -- what a stunning experience.
Easily one of my top fine dining experiences. Detailed breakdown below: **Service, 5/5** There are as many staff as there are patrons! With only 8 guests at a time (although they're moving locations and will do 12-person seatings soon), you're really well taken care of. Everyone puts so much care and effort into making it a memorable and interactive experience; truly makes for a special evening. **Decor & cleanliness, 5/5** Decor changes each season along with the menu and dinnerware, which adds to the intimacy and interactiveness of the meal. **Price & portion, 5/5** After tax and service charge, you'll be paying over $200/person. But this is seriously a one of one experience; highly recommend trying at least once! **Presentation of the food, 5/5** Mind. Blowing. From items you assemble yourself, to things set on fire, ingredients prepared in front of you, and a true homage to the theme, the care, thought, and effort put into each dish seriously shows. **Taste of the food, 5/5** Each of the 13 courses was fantastic in its own right, but some of the stand outs for me were the black cod, "twisted towels" with orange and fennel mousse, snake in the grass, and the angels & devils dish. So many pasta varieties I'd never had before, flavor combinations I wouldn't have even thought of preparing together, and takes on classics (snake in the grass as a twist on spaghetti and meatballs) made this one of the best dinner experiences I've had, and easily the most interactive. Can't wait to try their other seasonal themes!
Man this definitely took me into a wild mushroom fantasy I
Man this definitely took me into a wild mushroom fantasy I never thought of experiencing. From the whole forest-y vibe to the well-decked-out forest table, Merchant Roots definitely executed the vibe check. With my group, we were so stoked about trying an immersive experience and mushrooms definitely stood out. Disclaimer we love mushrooms too. What's cool about this place is that they rotate their menu seasonally. So this theme, they did mushrooms titled, "Into the Forest." After another couple months, it'll be another set menu. I really thought I was gonna leave this place starving since I thought this was just a mushroom-themed restaurant, but to my surprise I left feeling satiated and surprisingly pretty satisfied overall. Shoutout to Chef Ryan! You did a great job alongside your sous chefs to concoct this menu while explaining each dish with such a whimsical approach. They give you a few bites/appetizers before seating you! With a rustic approach, the menu is set like a trail, where you are "trailing" into each dish with a 17-course dinner. We started with the King Trumpet Chips and Dip, Hamachi Crudo and Porcini Aminos, Venison Tartare with Charred Cordyceps and Cranberry Juniper, Red Cap Mushroom Muffin, Morels in XO, Shiitake Mushrooms Perfect with Savory Caramel, Winter Salad of Twigs and Mushrooms, Hen of the Woods Soup, Smoked Oyster Mushroom Braised Kabocha, Yellowfeet with Porchetta, Apricot, 65° Quail Egg with Black Trumpet Puree, Tempura Enoki Agedashi Abalone, Fairy Ring Gnudi w/ Sage and Duck Sausage, Truffle with Lobster Bisque Celeriac, Chocolate Pot de Creme, Buche Root Eclair, and Candy Cap Ice Cream with Winter Fruit. The menu isn't just mushrooms! There are also meat dishes incorporated into this theme, while keeping the mushroom essence justice. While not every single dish was a hit for me, I will say a lot of the dishes stood out. I loved the Hen of the Woods soup, Tempura with Agedashi Abalone, this Mushroom Consomme with this Truffle Oil Crumpet, and the Maple Candy Cap Ice Cream. The soups that they offered definitely stood out and it captured the defined flavor of the fungi. I also really liked the Egg with Black Trumpet Puree. The quail eggs were cooked to perfection and that rustic taste from the puree was a nice warm compliment. Definitely make your reservations before coming at least a month in advance so you can snag a table of your liking. This was a great experience overall.
Do it! Do it! Do it! Just got in a cab from the Pasta
Do it! Do it! Do it! Just got in a cab from the Pasta Stories menu. It was amazing. My partner and I enjoyed every course & really appreciated the Stories portion of the courses. We had 10 favorite entrees and two favorite desserts. No spoilers!!!
This place is amazing.
A quiet, small, intimate setting (only 8 people) where each chef crafts their own dish and is then perfected by the whole team. All dishes are also accompanied with associated fascinating history. Almost every dish made me want a whole bowl of it but alas all I got was a taste. My favorites were the arancine, strozzapreti, and conchigle. They change the menu every 3 months so highly recommend getting into this pasta and stories round before they put it on the shelf for about 4-5 years.

Merchant Root is a charming and intimate restaurant that seats only eight people, creating an exclusive dining experience that sells out months in advance. After securing a reservation a few months ago, we eagerly anticipated the evening's theme, "Pasta & Stories." Each chef crafted a unique pasta dish and shared an associated story, adding a personal touch to the meal. The cozy ambience was enhanced by pasta-making tools hanging from the ceiling and pictures of each chef's nonna adorning the walls. The meal began with Foglia Caprese, a basil-shaped pasta served with basil leaf and mozzarella, accompanied by a shot of tomato drink. It was a pleasant start, though not particularly remarkable. The Arancine followed but was my least favorite; it lacked flavor and was a bit tough. However, the Lithuanian Burokeliu with beet soup was a standout, offering a delicious and memorable taste. The Spaghetti and squab meatballs were outstanding--I could have easily enjoyed a dozen more of those savory meatballs. The Three Priests and Stroncatura pasta dishes were average, but the Conchiglie Misti elevated the experience. I could have indulged in ten more portions, as the black cod was simply delectable. The Tortellini, served with an exquisite lamb broth, was another highlight, with perfectly cooked pasta. The final pasta course, Angels and Devils, was good, though the pasta seemed slightly overcooked. It might be a matter of personal preference or the intended style of the dish. The desserts concluded the meal on a high note. The Acini De Pepe was one of the best desserts I've had at a restaurant, with every element harmoniously working together. The Gelato Torchiato was also very delicious. Overall, the service was good, though it could have been slightly more attentive to match the experience. The cozy ambience and unique "Pasta & Stories" theme made for a memorable evening at Merchant Root.

Fungi Fan Merchant Roots in San Francisco is a one of a kind thematic and immersive dining experience Their dinner series rotate seasonally and I was fortunate to attend one of the last seatings for their mushroom-centric dinner, 'Into The Forest' Being a dedicated carnivore, I had my doubts about the evening's vegetarian menu (6-7 dinners in the series are typically vegetarian-only, while most cater to omnivores), but I approached it with an open mind The intimate space and whimsical decor had me smiling while the array of dishes and their preparation made me truly appreciate the diversity of a vegetarian meal Chef Ryan Shelton has crafted something truly unique and the experience is enhanced while meeting some of the friendliest and creative fellow diners I've shared a meal in a long time Thank you Merchant Roots for taking me into the forest and expanding my horizons King Trumpet Chips and Dip / Tofu Crudo & Porcini / Corycep Salad / Red Cap Mushroom Stuffing / Morels in XO / Shiitake Mushroom Parfait with Savory Caramel / Winter salad of Twigs & Mushrooms / Hen of the Woods Soup / Smoked Oyster Mushroom Braised Kabocha / Yellowfeer with Eggplant / 65° Quail Egg with Black Trumpet Puree / Tempura Enoki Agadashi / Fairy Ring Gnudi / Truffle with Oyster Mushroom Sausage / Chocolate Pot de Crème / Buche eclair / Candy Cap Ice Cream Merchant Roots (San Francisco, CA) Reservations are required on Tock and dining is indoor only. My friends and I went yesterday and adored Merchant Roots.
In short: the service was 10/10 (super friendly, funny and kinda), the food was yummy and beautifully plated and the details they put into crafting the space was very appreciated. This is easily the best nonalcoholic pairing I've seen with a meal. I'm going to try to go in order, in detail as best as I can but there were so many courses that I expect myself to miss some details. You walk into the restaurant and they have a little seating area for you to start your first few bites as they welcome you. We started off with a stuffed mushroom cap, which wowed all of us with its meaty flavor. The cumin seasoning was a nice touch. It was then followed by portobello tea (consommé ?) which was SO yummy. I could have drank that tea forever. It came with a little gruyere (?) with truffle butter and woweeee. Very fragrant. Next, we moved to the main dining area which also had a beautiful menu (thank you as I needed this to help me remember) and an even more beautiful set up to create a foraging in the forest experience. We started off with three little bites, hidden in small bowls: - king trumpet chips and dip. LOVED the Dungeness crab dip. Personally I would have liked the trumpet chips cut a little thicker so they could retain the crispness a little more! - hamachi crudo with yuzu kosho and porcini: I could eat raw fish and yuzu kosho, but I was surprised by the porcini as I didn't know how it would pair - surprise: surprisingly well! - venison tartare with charred cordycup and cranberry juniper. I loved the crisp of the cordycup but I wish I had more bites of this as I felt that there were so many flavors going on here! Next we had the red cap mushroom muffin, morel in XO and shiitake mushrooms parfait with savory caramel. I'm going to be honest here: I loved the XO sauce so much that I completely blanked on the other two. Maybe it's my Cantonese blood, but I am a sucker for a good tangy, umami, crunchy XO. The next few dishes were the winter salad of twigs and mushrooms, hen of the woods soup with panino, smoked oyster mushrooms with braised kabocha. In this set, the hen of the woods soup stood out. There was a "spiders nest" for us to break through and some cooler ice cream inside which made for a really fun balance of flavors! The kabocha was cooked a little Al dente, so there was still some crunch to it, which I'm not used to! Next were the mains: porchetta, quail egg with black trumpet purée, tempura enoki agedashi abalone, fairy ring he brush with sage and duck sausage, truffle with lobster bisque and celery. These all stood out in different ways - the porchetta was plate beautifully and paired with a lot of interesting garnishes, like red dates. In typical me fashion, I would have preferred a crispier skin but it was quite yummy still. - the quail eggs were cooked to perfection. The yolk spilled out with a little pressure and it was so yummy. The run down of the black trumpet they gave us also made me fall in love with the mushroom more and give a new appreciation for it! - the enoki agedashi really stood out. The broth was really clear but still had the perfect savory flavor to it. - the fairy ring was also delicious. I can't say I've ever had a duck sausage before and now I can it's delicious. Really enjoyed the puree with it. - lobster with truffle and celery: we all love a good lobster tail and truffles so this was a nice closer. The scalloped celery was a unique touch and very appreciated! We ended with by moving to another seating area, continuing our adventure in the forest, and ended with three lovely desserts: - chocolate pot de creme: you added your own chocolate bits to a smooth and yummy dessert - buche roof eclair: rich and unique - candy cap ice cream with winter fruits: very unique flavor and I loved the pomegranate seeds with it - a little peppermint mushroom to take home: honestly haven't had this yet but it was so cute and came in a little basket! Into the woods, their mushroom themed menu, is coming to a close soon but I look forward to seeing their other menus. Pasta is the last theme they will have in this location and then they're moving to a larger space in soma where they will only slightly increase the size of the seatings to keep the emphasis on small group dining.
I don't know why I hadn't heard about Merchant Roots before
I don't know why I hadn't heard about Merchant Roots before this year (I guess COVID, 2 babies, and SF issues), but we decided this meal would be worth the trek up the peninsula. It's an immersive experience with new theme every quarter. They change everything up for the theme - decor, music, etc. We made it to the start of their Into the Woods mushroom theme, which they revived from a prior experience circa 2019. Welcome: portobello mushroom tea and truffled crumpet - they give this to you when you walk in, and the "tea" was a very flavorful consomme, perfect after walking in on a cold night Many of the dishes are actually already on the table hidden in the woodsy tablescape. 1. Stuffed mushroom with lamb merguez, harissa, tahini 2. King trumpet mushroom chips with Dungeness crab dip and trout roe 3. Hamachi crudo over porcini aminos 4. Venison tartare with charred cordycep, cranberry, juniper 5. Red cap mushroom muffin: beet juice to make it red, goat cheese mousse, candy cap mushroom muffin 6. Morel in XO: charcoal grilled morel with house made XO on a jicama leaf. I wish I could have bottled that XO sauce 7. Shiitake mushroom parfait with savory caramel: in a glass terrarium, cool textures and flavors. This was one of my top 2 dishes 8. Winter salad of twigs and mushrooms: Kalamata olive tapenade, confit potatoes, marinated and shaved button mushrooms, twigs made of olive tapenade, edible moss 9. Hen of the woods soup: poured into a bowl covered with a web of spun sugar cotton candy, and inside the bowl is a potato ice cream. The hot maitake soup over this was very reminiscent of the Alinea "hot potato cold potato." There was also a super flavorful maitake mushroom panino on the side. It'll be hard to go back to a regular grilled cheese after this sandwich. This was my favorite dish. 10. Smoked oyster mushroom broth with slow braised kabocha. This was topped with a portabello cap, covered in moss, hidden in the tablescape 11. Hedgehog mushroom with condensed milk marinated pork jowl, crispy pig ear, apricot gastrique, chestnuts. It was an unexpected combination of flavors that worked well 12. 65 degree quail egg with vermouth espuma and black trumpet purée - loved this purée 13. Tempura enoki: agedashi style, with a smoked oyster mushroom dashi, abalone, seaweed aioli 14. Fairy ring gnudi: with sage and duck and pear sausage, a ring of sage pesto, shaved apples, crispy enoki. The sausage was surprisingly wonderful and not gamey at all 15. Lobster tail: poached in truffle butter, with lobster bisque and celeriac, truffle cream braised celery root au gratin, truffle jus braised celery, shaved black truffle Then you move to a different table for the dessert courses: 1. Chocolate pot de crème with fleur de sel and micro meringue mushrooms: wonderful textures 2. Buche de Noel eclair with stout mousse 3. Candy cap ice cream with winter fruits Finally: a mint marshmallow mushroom in a tiny basket to take home The setting, plating, and food are all super creative. It's been a while since I've had something novel like this, and for this many courses and the effort + attention to details, the base price of $148/person is shockingly reasonable. Reservations are on Tock. I'll be back for their next theme (pasta!). Apparently, they plan menu concepts 2 cycles ahead, so I truly appreciate the incredible amount of work that goes into these experiences. Don't spoil the surprises by looking at food photos ahead of time!
And we're back for round 2 at Merchant Roots - this time
And we're back for round 2 at Merchant Roots - this time for God of Wine! What I love about this restaurant is that you go in with conjectures about the type of food you'll be served based on the theme. It'll probably be more Mediterranean flavors or there will definitely be a lot of grapes... and wine. The team at Merchant Roots are able to read your mind as you walk through the door and then surprise you ten fold. Some of our favorites from this theme included the impossible gyro cigar from the feast, the revelry fertility rite (so beautiful and delicate), and the terroir. And we learned a lot about Greek mythology! And of course they made everything vegetarian and it was delicious and we will definitely be back :) Also apologies - Yelp is confusing and I think some of my pics from 'Great Trees' got in this review.
The most creative, authentic, and original experience and staggeringly delicious food
I cannot recommend this small and original restaurant more highly. The food was faultless, imaginative, complex, perfectly balanced and seasoned. I am still salivating. The experience is unpretentious and genuine, and the chefs present the food and the story behind each dish. The team designs the creative menu, and their care and thoughtfulness are in every bite. I will for sure be coming back. Don't miss it. You won't have experienced anything like it. Trust me, there are no embarrassing theatrics, but there is plenty of passion and wonder. My son and I had a magical time.
Can't believe I have not known this place for so long!
Can't believe I have not known this place for so long! Super creative and talented team. I love their unique twist on each dish and every dish brings laughter/surprise. December: time traveling theme I'll definitely be coming back for future theme. It looks like they rotate the themes quarterly each year. Sucks all the previous theme are no longer avaliable . But I'm excited to see future new ideas from the awesome team. Guess I'll be in SF every quarterly then
Probably the most unique, creative and playful fine dining
Probably the most unique, creative and playful fine dining experience I've ever had (we did the Time Travelers menu). I learned the team does months of research for every set menu, and it definitely shows.
Wow... just wow... There's so much that goes into the
Wow... just wow... There's so much that goes into the planning for this meal and experience. And the chefs told us that they change the experience quarterly. The atmosphere is on point with the theme, ours was Time Traveling. You are transported through different times with the food and stories and your decisions may affect what happens in the future - I loved the interactive part. Here are the favorites: Taste: noodles with Duck Nostalgic: edible chia pet Mind blowing: the dessert craziness I'm not sure how many courses there were but we were stuffed and had to waddle back to our place after. Truly a really amazing experience. We will definitely be back.

Great Service - amazing dinner!!
Read about the site in NYT and bought a reservation at Mother Wolf in LA 2 days later. Worked great and the food was amazing!!!
Worked perfectly!
Got the reservation (that I couldn't get anywhere else) and was able to entertain a group of friends at the infamous Bern's Steakhouse.
Got into Nobu Malibu
Wonderful! My parents are visiting and we have wanted to go to Nobu Malibu for years. I tried getting a reservation myself but it was next to impossible. So glad I was able to buy a reservation on appointment trader for a decent price!
Very easy
Was very hesitant going into this experience but am glad to say that it worked out very well ! will definitely use appointment trader in the future
Fabulous Lunch
I was veeeeeerry skeptical that this would work, particularly at a restaurant as hard to get into as Nobu Malibu, and it was perfect! We had lunch outside on the patio and it was fabulous!
Great reviewer team
Just wanted to take a second to shout out the reviewer team. Even though they probably review hundreds of listings and bids a day, they still take the time to leave great comments and respond relatively quickly. Thanks!
Incredible
I got a reservation to Don Angie, which I've been trying to book for weeks! I am very happy with this service.
Best platform out there!
Super simple, easy, and fast to secure reservations for hard-to-get restaurants and locations!
This app is life changing
This app has opened my world up to so many wonderful new experiences I would never have the chance to have without access to this awesome app! 10/10!
Worked perfectly
Was a little nervous at first but was pleased to see that the booking went through flawlessly.
Highly recommended.
Success on Short Notice
Was able to snag an indoor table at Don Angie through an absolutely seamless worry-free process.

This is a crazy holiday season in NYC and I was very pleasantly surprised to see that AppointmentTrader works! Will be using again!

Quick table in Miami
I didn’t have my hopes high as it was a party of 4. In 24 hours I had a carbone reservation available! I was very happy as my family really wanted to come here

perfect
Worked well, got me into a restaurant with no availability
I was skeptical, and I still don't really know how they managed to find this hard-to-find reservation, but it was a win-win from my point of view, and I'll use this service again.
Last minute reservation for Delilah Las Vegas
Got a last minute reservation, dinner for 2 at Delilah Las Vegas: super impressed! The process was simple, transaction seamless. We had an amazing time! Couldn’t be happier! 😍
It works!
Ok at this point I've attended a reservation purchased on AT by a friend and sold a reservation personally. Both worked pretty smoothly, nothing sketchy about it. A few areas for improvement including a way to more directly communicate between buyers and sellers, but the app always seems to be in development. AT customer support is really(!) responsive and helpful too if you have questions!
Money transfer
As a seller, I like the fact i have the ability now to transfer money out of my AT account and into a bank account. Makes getting the money much easier then the process before.
Love this app
Got to go to places otherwise unreachable
Easy Access
Very easy to get into one of the hardest restaurants to reserve in New York.
Payouts Blocked Because of Sell Through Rate
Does anyone know how AT plans to handle cases where a seller is quitting the platform but has a sell through rate <25%? The error message I got said to fill more bids or find other ways to increase the rate.
Is AT really going to block sellers from withdrawing their money? Especially revenue made before the sell through rate was introduced??
Tune into NBC News - Top Story Tonight 7:40p ET
Let’s go. Get more people placing bids!
I will give you 50% of ALL of my PROFITS if you teach me how to make profits?
LOL. Thank you The New Yorker.
Appointment
Transferring reservations is not supported in AT. Why not just use the name in the AT screenshot?
Buyers interested in Bern's Steakhouse: PLEASE READ
Same goes for 4 Charles and I Sodi
Prepaid Reservation Fee
Agreed. Ultimately not addressing this month after month is clearly resulting in a drop in certain venue’s rankings & sales.
Congrats on 3 mil
🍾🍾🍾🍾🍾🍾🧨🧨🧨 now on to 30 mill!
Need to cancel a bid, not getting a response… how do I do it?
Click on "Take off the Market Option" in your portfolio
Working on your bid?
Your bid has been “matched” with a reservation. From the time a reservation has been located, the seller of the reservation must connect with moderator to give transfer information for reservation. If the seller;however, does NOT respond to reservation transfer, then your bid is reprocessed and returns to the first step, which is connecting your request to a reservation.
Process after bid is accepted.
Hey @EvocativeFold67, welcome to appointmenttrader! Once the reservation is in your portfolio, you definitely own the timeslot, the review team would not have approved the trade if the reservation wasn't confirmed - so you are going :-) Judging from your post you bid today and are going tomorrow - don't worry as long as you initiated the name transfer, you are good - the transfer service has to work with the opening hours of the reservation team of the respective venue. You will likely see the transfer confirmation a couple hours before your reservation time.
Where do the Reservations on AppointmentTrader come from?
Mostly from people who don't need their reservations or appointments any longer. AT has no relationship with places listed and acts as a platform connecting buyers and sellers making sure that listed reservations are real and that privacy is not compromised when transacting.
What happens if my bid expires unanswered?
Hey @FluffyStar64, thanks for the question! When you place your bid the amount gets transferred in a deposit account, the second you either cancel your bid or a few minutes after the bid expires the funds are moved back into your main account from where you can refund it to your payment method or use for other transactions.
