Masseria Washington Reviews from The Last Year
Do not take me wrong on the four stars - Masseria is a
Do not take me wrong on the four stars - Masseria is a restaurant with delicious food that will be memorable, particularly their fresh pasta and their foie gras dishes (extra supplement for both foie gras dishes, but worth it for sure). The location is interesting but not very easy to find at first; you fumble through the street to find the small opening into the restaurant's patio and then the door to the bar and dining room - feels like you're entering a house through the pool. Still, I think this bit confers identity to the restaurant overall. The cocktails are interesting, and the food, as I wrote above, is delicious. The tasting menu started with interesting amuse-bouches; the foie gras was delicious, the two pasta dishes were very good and fresh, and the lamb was beautifully plated and tasty. Where a start drops is that there was a 30-minute interval between the last main dish and the dessert that was not even acknowledged. That can happen, of course, but in a restaurant winner of a Michelin star and with a pricey tasting menu, the service, otherwise very friendly, needs to be impeccable, and significant kitchen/service delays should not happen to start with or at least be acknowledged if happening. Ultimately, I recommend the experience, but it is a competitive fine dining environment in DC, and ultimately, details matter.
Amazing dinner! Tasting menu was superb.
Can't say enough good things. Staff was professional, and dishes were well timed.
Amazing! Did not disappoint.
Food, service and ambiance were all perfect. We sat at the table by the kitchen. Highly recommend if you are looking for a special evening in DC.
Had a really nice birthday dinner here.
Agree with another reviewer that the best part was the bread! Other standouts were the burrata and candy to go boxes. I thought the food, environment, and Pace of service was better here than at nearby El Cielo.
Excellent presentation and service.
The wine selection was also great. Food was a totally different story. We upgraded the main course to get a higher end beef cut. DO NOT do that. I will say that we were super appreciative that they compensated us because we did not eat it. Also, we went for the chef's counter experience and that was a mistake- best to not know what is happening back there. The kitchen porter/sous chef (unclear on the role) prepped food and played with her cell phone in between duties without washing her hands for the first 25 minutes we waited and watched. The chef repeatedly wiped sweat without washing his hands for two hours. Four Appetizers presented and only one was worthy of mention. Is this an Italian restaurant????? That is what the website says. Only one dish was remotely "Italian" and it was the worst course. Website says it has a Michelin star....Guessing it is not the same chef that received that accolade. Super disappointed in this extremely overpriced subpar experience. We traveled 5 hours for this and I cannot begin to express how sad I was as a foodie who travels internationally. Hoping D.C. represents with with the other Michelin Starred restaurants we have on the agenda.

The highs were high, and the lows were meh, as in forgettable. Our server was so informative, kind, and attentive. The service, as in the pacing of the dishes and long wait times dampened our dining experience. For starters, getting water at the start of our dining experience was a challenge, took 15 minutes. Was it worth the $1000 we spent on our anniversary din? Sadly, no. What stands out? Truly, what stands out the most is their delicious and fluffy focaccia, topped with veggies, and dipped in tomato sauce. Tastes like pizza!

I stopped by here last night for dinner and drinks at the bar and enjoyed it very much. The bar service was great and I enjoyed the Linguine. The price point is definitely high for what you get but I'm glad I knocked it off my list. The ambiance is very nice and the staff are very professional. This is a great date spot or just a spot come in for a drink and/or dinner solo.
We had the opportunity to experience the culinary splendor
We had the opportunity to experience the culinary splendor of Chef Nicholas Stefanelli at his restaurant Masseria for my wife's birthday this past October. It was quite the experience, enjoying the six course tasting menu, alongside a bottle of wine and a few cocktails. Ivan, our server, alongside our sommelier Kyle and the rest of the staff were very personable about making us feel welcome at every moment. What stood out first and foremost was their attention to detail. When we arrived to our table, there was a handwritten birthday card for my wife. We started off the evening with two cocktails. While they surely were not cheap, they were some of the best mixed drinks we have ever had. We then ordered an amazing bottle of wine, discussing our palette with Kyle, from our favorite region in Italy to go along with our tasting menu. The focaccia to start was simply divine, almost to the point of tears. We must say that this is one of the best tasting menus that we have ever had in the DC area. Each plate came out thoughtfully curated, like a work of art. Not to mention the Versace plates that the food was served on. What is so nice about Masseria is that it emphasizes how Italian cuisine is more than just pasta. Ivan explained to us how in Italy, pasta is mainly just a mid dish and how meals such as fish and beef are prioritized. This went way beyond the traditional Italian cuisine that we are accustomed to. To finish off the evening, they sent us away with a token gift bag with some great treats. Once you've tried Masseria, you can understand why this place is the #12 best Italian restaurant outside of Italy. We highly recommend Masseria for your next special occasion.

Supplement charge was not reminded by the waiter, and we paid more than doubled by unknowingly selecting alternative dishes for the course. For $178, You can only get a very salty pork as your main course, tasting like grocery store ham. Otherwise, prepare $245 on top of $178 for food only when budgeting, not $178 as advertised. Not worth it!

Exceptional food and service.
Overall a bit pricey for the area but the food was memorable. You need to be very hungry the way the menu is set up.
A disgrace to its Michelin star
This experience was extremely disappointing. Perhaps the food is great at times, but I went this past Saturday evening and for being Michelin star dining.. it was just embarrassing. The staff were not welcoming, totally robotic, and described the food in a such a rushed fashion. I don’t think I saw a single smile. It did not feel personal whatsoever. Even the way they communicated with one another just created an uncomfortable atmosphere where everyone seemed miserable. The food was beautiful, but MAN were the flavors totally out of balance. Some items came out VERY salty. The fried mushroom at the beginning was not only cold, but hard to chew. The worst was my UNDERCOOKED prawn. When I flipped it over, the tail was still gray. I wish I had taken a photo. This is unacceptable. Additionally, many plates had garnishes/toppings/extras that seemed not just useless, but seemed as if they were fried and left out all day. Totally thoughtless, tasteless, and only just aesthetically pleasing. Major tweaking is needed, on flavor balance and service. I would not waste my time here, as DC is filled with plenty of other high quality restaurants with staff who actually care about guests and their dining experience.
This was an outstanding experience
The food was outstanding. The staff was engaging and attentive. The restaurant was charming and the neighborhood was electric.
Memorable for all the wrong reasons
This was our third and last visit to this restaurant. We enjoyed the first visit (pre-COVID), but the last two have not been good. We were completely underwhelmed by the food at the last two visits, particularly at this price point. The service was neither warm nor attentive across the board. Staff seemed annoyed to be there. No smiles. No interest in creating a nice evening. No enthusiasm about the food. The prices are absurd for the experience. My pre-dinner cocktail at the bar was $70, with not a single smile or hint of warmth from the bartender. Then, at the end of the meal, we are told that there is a 20% service charge that does not include any gratuity (the service charge is mentioned when you make a reservation, but it does not disclose that it does not include any gratuity, which has not been my experience at other places). So, they want a 20% service charge plus a 20% tip based off these inflated prices. I don’t mind a reasonable service charge that builds in an appropriate gratuity, but 40% is insane. We spent over $1100 on a mediocre meal for 4 (with one person drinking only water), and not a single staff member among the many we encountered seemed to care whether we were having a good experience or not. To demand 40% for that subpar performance is a nonstarter. There is much better food and service to be had elsewhere, especially for these prices.
Excellent food but service charge and gratuity?
Tough place to get to from the burbs. Excellent service. Very good food. They do Italian very well. When they try to add in some other non Italian ingredients an excellent dish turns average. Overall - a very good restaurant. Is it worth the price? Probably not. The worst part is they bring you the bill and charge a service fee if 20 percent and they say that’s for front and back of the house but not gratuity. So they basically are looking for 40 percent. That left a very sour note. Never seen that before. So they get the four stars. Bad move.
