Is there negative score? Read this experience carefully
Is there negative score? Read this experience carefully before heading to this place. Not sure who is giving them 5 stars? Typical omakase place will feed you until you feel I need to stop. This place give you tiny pieces of a few little sushis, you feel half hungry when you leave, and get stomach pain from whatever they fed you with. You pay $200 to make a reservation, and after eating those tiny pieces of not so different sushis, they charge you $450 more on top of the $200 you already paid. I didn't understand how they arrived at the $650 bill. Beware, and stay away. I emailed saying how unsatisfied I was, and how I felt nauseas after eating there, no reply, they don't care. Save your money and go somewhere else!
Be the first to ReplyThis place was amazing.
They called before hand to warn us to be there early. As a chronically just on time or fashionably late person I appreciated the heads up. The interior is very simple and sleek, appropriately Japanese. The staff take your coat immediately and seat you. Every one is very respectful. The food was incredible, in particular the Spanish mackerel was a perfect texture and fresh taste, Kakuni braised lamb was so savory and rich it was fantastic , suimono and the sweet potato mochi ice cream was perfect, no too sweet great way to end the meal. A wonderful experience
Be the first to ReplyWooooow! Came here for my birthday dinner and all I can say
Wooooow! Came here for my birthday dinner and all I can say is wow! This place was honestly my first Michelin star omakase and it totally lives up to its status. We made a reservation for 8:30pm and went in early at around 8:15pm. I have a crustacean allergy and really do not like uni, so I was able to have a modified menu. I was so grateful that they could accommodate (uni on a short notice). We waited until 8:30pm, when all the other tables and bar filled up. We were immediately served with a light soup and some tuna. I was very hesitant to eat the monkfish liver but it was honestly one of the best pieces. I was also worried that I had so many mackerels (don't like the taste) but I was told that since Mako's mackerel is cured in house, the fishy taste is not present. I loved the scallion toppings. There was a deep sea fish that was unbelievable. It was charred in a scallion oil. There are countless other courses that were delicious as well. Overall. I had a great time celebrating my birthday. There was coat check, rounds and rounds of courses, table cleanings, extravagant platings, and a quiet atmosphere. One thing I wished was for the bathrooms to be cleaner. For being a Michelin star restaurant, I expected a higher standard.

I can see how some people might not love the way they do omakase. Very minimal interaction with the chef in front of you. Often times you'll be explained the dish not by the one who prepares it. Very minimal interaction between chef and you. Which I didn't mind. Sometimes I just want great food, while at the sushi bar watching it preppedx and talk with whoever I'm with. Fantastic food. Great progression. Didn't overdo the early courses which I find some cheaper omakase experiences do.
Be the first to ReplyNot worth the price.
They advertise the dinner price to be ~$200 per person, and you are required to make a $200 deposit when making a reservation being told the $200 would go towards our dinner price. We ordered two dinners with one wine pairing. We were told the wine pairing would be $35, but they charged us $95 when the bill arrived. The bill also did not detail the automatic 20% gratuity they added, and they asked us for an additional tip on top of that. Not only that, they seemingly upcharged our bill so that our $200 deposit would go towards that. We expected to pay $435-500 before tips and taxes before entering this establishment. The bill we received was $754.69, automatic gratuity and taxes added. To which we tipped an additional $138 because we didn't see gratuity was already added until we asked for an itemized receipt from them digitally afterwards. For $100 more I could have gone to a 3* michelin restaurant for two. The food was good, but felt uninspired and definitely not worth this price. I've had better omakase for a fraction of the price.
Be the first to ReplyFood is stunning and delicious and on point.
It is pricey but it is a fine dining intimate Michelin star experience. Service is top tier and you are constantly being taken care of. I love the ambiance as the place as it feels very intimate as I said before. I'm only able to tag 10 of the pics of the dishes so I posted my favs! We also had a complementary starting dish which was nice

The service was amazing! They substituted all dishes with crawfish sue to my allergy. The flavors were delicate and the dishes were served quickly which I liked! Note: I was not hungry when I walked in and was not full when I walked out! (Speaking as a girl)

i went here for my bday! it was dimly lit, but it's really cool that the lights shine on the chefs in front of you and the background that has the map of the globe - oh, and the plates in front of you. like the work station where the chefs make the sushi is illuminated and it's so freaking cool to see. service was A1, absolutely no complaints about it. some came out faster than the other but gives my friend and i time to catch up on our drinks bc i was def drowning in all those drinks those wine and sake pairing were paired perfectly and i highly recommend it! food - absolutely delicious. flavors were complex and could not ask for anything better. i will say that i wish they played around with the textures to have an even better experience. oh and that fish broth in the glass cup? didn't expect it to be warm but it was great!!! oh, the one that was not my favorite was the cake pastry dish... everything was great until this one :/ mine felt a little dry so i was taken aback by this one all in all, i still think that mako is worth the drive, worth the visit! the ppl next to us were from oregon and traveled specifically for this place and i don't blame them bc it's def worth the stop in the windy city
Be the first to ReplyDelicious all around.
They are so great at explaining everything for their courses and drinks. We chose to share the drink course that you can get separately. We accidentally drank one of the rounds too quickly and didnt get a chance to try it with the intended course so they gave us more! They really want you to experience the meal to its fullest. Even sharing between the two of us got us pretty tipsy! The food is so buttery and fresh. I was very surprised since we are not a city close to salt water. I would highly recommend this spot to any sushi/sake fanatic and continue to do so with my friends!

My GF and I came here for our anniversary to try out their omakase spread. All the photos are the various different things we tried along with an example of one of the sets of sushi menus The experience was amazing. Something we've always wanted to do and I'm glad Mako was able to deliver. It's an interesting experience and definitely one that makes you appreciate the work that goes into preparing quality fish and sushi. The restaurant, staff and food was all amazing. And we might just come back for our next anniversary to experience this amazing 15-16 course meal. One more time.
Be the first to ReplyWe ate there on a recent Thursday, 8:30pm, reservation.
The presentations and atmosphere were fancy, but not stuffy. We have eaten at Michelin starred sushi restaurants on the West Coast, but this would be a first time for the Chicago area. The dishes ranged from outstanding to average. One of the issues for us was perhaps that there was too much rice, or the neta was not enough for the sushi. We did the drink pairing and it was excellent. I generally think pairings are not worth it, but this one was a hit. Towards the end, one can order a là carte for any of the previous sushi dishes. As a whole, the experience was definitely worth it and Mako should be taken seriously among the great sushi restaurants.
Be the first to ReplyThis was my 3rd visit to Mako and it has become my favorite
This was my 3rd visit to Mako and it has become my favorite sushi restaurant in the city. The soft neutral wood tones are visually appealing and exude a sense of relaxed luxury. Soft music plays in the background. The service is knowledgeable, quick and efficient. Each piece of nigiri or slice of sashimi is perfection. The hot dishes are equally impressive. The portions are on the smaller side but there's a reason for this. Chef wants you to enjoy each piece in one bite while the rice and fish are in perfect harmony. Perfection comes at a price so be prepared. I would say you can't go wrong visiting Mako. Note: some pieces are handed to you directly if you're seated at the sushi bar. I neglected to take photos of these.

I was hesitant in choosing our first omakase in chicago, and after semi-searching, we stumbled onto Mako and did not disappoint. First off, their service is impeccable. Robin didn't hesitant to make sure our needs were met and treat us with the utmost camaraderie. Now the food (art? Specialty? Mastery? Ingenuity?), whatever you want to call it, explored our taste buds to the finest degree. We left the experience feeling satisfied, and honestly that's all you can ask for. We can't wait to experience again. Thank you to the Mako team for such a wonderful and welcoming time!
Be the first to ReplyThis was a beautiful omakase, we booked a month in advance
This was a beautiful omakase, we booked a month in advance and they called and text us the day before to confirm allergens. When we arrived, we had to wait for the group before getting started which felt very formal. We sat at the sushi bar and was able to watch the sushi chefs up close prepare each dish. The setting was very very intimate with around 20 people during the session. Each course was so thoughtful, and so well presented. It had everything from sashimi, nigiri, hot dishes, and even multiple desserts to finish it off. Everything was so personal, intimate, thoughtful, and so quality. This was an amazing experience that was definitely worth the price, not all the food was pictured and there was so much more offered. The desserts as well were AMAZING. Everything was a great portion, and this experience lasted around 2 hours. It felt surreal, I loved this experience.
Be the first to ReplyEvery bite was delicious.
But I understand why some people may not come back because there are many different chefs and they have more seats than most places, so the experience might not be the same each time. I preferred the otoro over the chutoro here but I don't think there was a bite I didn't enjoy.
Be the first to ReplyThis was a great place to try for my first Michelin
This was a great place to try for my first Michelin restaurant. The place is a little confusing to find as you would overlook the main entrance. The place itself was very intimate. Only about 10 seats(?) if I remember correctly and dimly lit. The food was innovative for some of the dishes and the nigiri fish was fresh. There were some dishes that I did not think I would like, but I ended up liking everything that was offered. My only wish for this place was I wish there were more interactions or conversations from the sushi chefs themselves. It was only the waiters telling us what was being served.. I would have loved to have had interactions with the sushi chefs.

Mako is named after a shark known for its speed, precision, focus and instinct, and after dining here, it is evident Mako is Chef Park chose this name well as this is rock star sushi. Mako was awarded a coveted Michelin star in 2020 and it is well deserved, but know that the menu is heavily balanced towards seafood. You need to make reservations far in advance and seating is limited. I sat at the sushi bar with a front row view and the service was outstanding. The biggest challenge was finding the front door as I took an Uber and it dropped me off, but I walked past it a few times, before realizing it is so nondescript that I completely missed it. Think of a simple door with a very tiny sign on the wall.I won't go into a dish by dish description and will simply post my photos and tell you that I loved every dish and also did the sake parring that was fantastic.Great service, great sushi, beautiful setting, what more could you ask for.
Be the first to ReplyWe loved dining at Mako for my bf's birthday.
This is a hidden gem with a Michelin star, calming zen vibe and beautifully crafted dishes. We loved the simple aesthetic of the decor, dark slate colors paired with metallics found in the wall art. Watching the sushi chef was a meditative experience itself. The staff was kind and welcoming. We had a 4 pm seating and spent about 1.5 hours at the restaurant during our mesmerizing omakase experience. It felt like we were instantly transported to a faraway place that cherishes natural elements thoughtfully assembled into one-of-a-kind dishes, using the highest quality fish and meats. The chutoro - medium fat tuna literally dissolved on my tongue. The same with the wagyu A5. Our absolute favorites were the ankimo - awabi - akami course that featured monfish liver, braised abalone and a bluefin tuna; the black cod with burnt scallion ponzu and the refreshing lychee granita. The dishes were beautifully composed and presented in a minimalist manner. I also appreciated the bathroom wallpaper, and the beautifully scented hand lotion. Breathe in, breathe out, stay present and take it all in!
Be the first to ReplyMy boyfie took me here for our anniversary.
It was super cozy inside, but it took us three tries to find where the entrance was lol. The door is super discreet so make sure to keep your eyes peeled! On to the food! We had the omakase and wow! Everything was spectacular. We legit ate everything the instant it came out. I would say though, for the price of everything, we did leave not fully full (but plentiful satisfied). We would definitely come back (and maybe make a ramen afterwards hehe). The servers are super attentive and the bathroom is out of this world. Would highly suggest coming here for a cute date night! This is probably already noted, but make sure you book reservations in advance. They fill up quick!

Loved the ambiance, interior design, service, and food! The outside makes it easy to miss as their Mako sign is very small. Interior is modern with options to sit at the tables or the bar. Highly recommend to sit at the bar as you will get to see the chefs work their magic. It is a very relaxing and entertaining experience to see how the chefs are strict with themselves on handling each dish. The time and care put in to each dish is a work of art as they are handcrafted right in front of you. We tried the three cocktails shown on the menu and they were all great, especially the Yojimbo. The food may look like you will not be stuffed; however, we left with pretty full bellies. Also, there is a paid public parking lot right across from the restaurant, make sure to arrive a little early before your reservation!
Be the first to ReplyHonestly, just ok.
I wanted to love this place but can't say I did. Insanely expensive and we left hungry. Wouldn't return. We went as a "splurge" dinner to celebrate our anniversary. For spending almost $600, you'd think they'd give a drink or dessert on the house. They instead gave us a staff-signed menu- which I appreciate - but for that kind of bill, we expected much greater hospitality.
Be the first to ReplyWell, I've been to my fair share of omakase restaurants and
Well, I've been to my fair share of omakase restaurants and I was very excited to finally make it to Mako. Ambiance and presentation is definitely great here. The courses are beautiful and yummy for the most part. My biggest issue is that the slices of fish were the thinnest I've ever experienced. At times, the flavor and texture of the sushi rice was more overpowering than the fish. Don't get me wrong, the sushi rice was great, but I was there to experience amazing fish, not rice. I've been to omakase where I thought the nigiri pieces had perfect balance and ratio and I've been to places that I thought were too heavy handed on the fish. But the thinness of these cuts were definitely a first. I also didn't realize they had multiple sushi chefs. I now know I prefer omakase experiences led by the head chef/owner. Also, the sushi chef we had barely described the fish, preparation or toppings he was adding. I enjoy more interaction and knowledge/explanation of what they are doing. I understand other people may be looking for a different type of dining experience, but I'm definitely the one staring intently at the sushi chef watching his every move and barely talking to my dining companion, lol. So if you are looking for a low-key omakase experience where you can just casually glance at chef or not look at all and not be engaged by the chef, this is a good place for that! Still an impressive dinner, but I can't get over how thin the fish was cut.
Be the first to ReplyTook my husband here for his birthday.
While it was a good sushi restaurant, it didn't meet my expectations of a michelin star restaurant. The service was fine, but there were details that I think would have elevated the experience. For example, the sushi looked nice and I appreciated that they gave us a list of the dishes we were being served, but there was minimal explanation on the dishes themselves. I think information like where the sushi is sourced, if there are unique preparation techniques, or if there's any 'story' behind the food, besides it being a yummy piece of sushi, make me appreciate the food even more. The dishes were kind of dropped off, with the waiter repeating what was on the menu, which isn't bad.. just nothing special. They also provided everyone with an envelope at the end, with a print out of the menu (nice touch!), except when we opened ours, it was empty lol... we did get someone's attention and they grabbed us a menu, but I thought that was funny. I'm glad I checked beforehand. The sushi was good, but kind of lacked in flavor. Also, I usually love pickled ginger, but the pickled ginger being served tasted like it was soaked just in vinegar, and didn't have enough sweetness. I couldn't eat much of it. There was a sushi bite that I very much enjoyed - I think it was a type of mackerel with a crispy skin. I can't say I feel like the experience matched the price point (~$500 for 2 people, with about 2 glasses of sake each). It's a nice experience, but not extraordinary.
Be the first to ReplyWow, everything about this meal was phenomenal.
Service was top-notch from the moment we walked in, and the ambience is also great - super intimate and perfect place for a date. I was blown away by the presentation of the first few dishes (as you can see from the photos), and they tasted even better than they looked. There's a good amount of sashimi and nigiri that you can eat, and I felt pretty full by the end. Highlights of my meal were definitely the otoro and mackerel. Unfortunately not the easiest place to become a regular at due to the price tag, but I would absolutely love to come back again.
Be the first to ReplyHad a really lovely experience here at Mako with my friends.
We were able to add another seat to our party the week of, and they made a table for us along the back away from the bar which felt very private. The room was decorated beautifully.Service was fantastic. Everyone was very professional, but they also made the experience fun for me and my girlfriends who were having a good time. The tasting course was delicious, and we kept saying "ooh this one is my favorite" as each course came out. We each ordered an additional hand roll and felt comfortably full at the end of the meal. My friends also did the beverage pairing, and it was a lot of alcohol! They had a hard time keeping up lol.I would definitely recommend this for a special occasion for sushi lovers!
