Catch a Falling Star - Michelin Star
Welcome to a Las Vegas Terrace. For that is the shock you encounter on entering what use to be a fine, calm and elegant restaurant. I have dined at Maison Rostang many times but have been absent for a while. Last night, being back in Paris, I had made a reservation for myself, and my wife and we were both anticipating the normal fine dining experience at Maison Rostang. WOW what an absolute let down in so many ways. Ambience, Food and Service. First ambience. Some crazy decision has been made to replace all of the furniture with faux marble, mostly white, round tables that are an assault on one’s senses. Accompanied by equally garish, plastic or laminate chairs. But the melting icing on the cake was the plastic charger and bread plate on the table. Absolutely horrendous. The décor is dull, very little color and a totally lack of imagination. Finally on the point of ambience the lighting is turned up way to bright destroying any chance of an intimate dinner with friends or loved ones. Additionally, if you were placed at our table you enjoyed the glare of the counter down lights from the kitchen. Whoever made this decision and implemented this monstrosity should be banished from any form of future design Second Food. Overall, the food was acceptable but NOT a two star level. There was no wow factor to any dish or side dish. So sad that this kitchen is descending from great to something very less. Additionally, the restaurant has decided that any diner should have only one of three choices. The ubiquitous 5 course truffle offering - boring, the seven course tasting menu or an extremely, almost nonexistent alacarte option. The only real option on the alacarte is pressed duck for a table side show. Chef – the restaurant is not La Tour d’Argent. Third Service – pleasant staff who appear totally bemused by the happenings surrounding them. The wine sommelier was incomprehensible, wine glasses remained unfilled, standard of dress of staff needs improving. Start with shoes and work up. I am sad to share this review for what was a favorite spot of ours when in Paris. It is now OFF the list. The maitre’d asked how we enjoyed our evening, and I shared my views which I hope he passes onto the chef. I overheard a snippet of conversation that the chef was hoping for a third Michelin star in the future round of awards. If true, it is pure delusion, based on the performance last night, for which I paid 825 euros for two pax, he will be lucky to retain his two stars and I predict that he will not. The restaurant is at best one star, barely. A sad decline that can be fixed.

A delightful.experience: food was really exquisite, makes you wonder why only 2 Michelin stars. Wine choice very interesting and one o the best services in Paris (and there aren’t many).

Dined on the lunch menu. Food was good but not stunning. Found some of the sauces heavy. Service was adequate. Expected more from a Michelin 2 star restaurant.

A wonderful evening during our stay in Paris. Young and attentive team. The menu is well thought and the right balance between high quality products and the extra what made each plate an experience. Where necessary, the menu was adapted gluten- and lactose free for my wife with esprit and without loosing quality. The wine pairing fitted perfectly. Next stay in Paris will mean a next stay in Maison Rostang.
Be the first to ReplyA great Paris restaurant but lacking for a 2-star Michelin rated one.
On the surface, nothing is wrong with Maison Rostang. Upon arrival, we were greeted by a friendly host staff. The menu is traditionally French, and our dishes were perfectly prepared and well cooked. Wine suggestions and drink pairing were both exceptional. The ambiance is quite traditional (dark woods, white table clothes, some light dust on the woodwork on the walls) but not overly exciting or unique. My main critique is based on where we were seated - in a back section of the restaurant off the main seating area (behind a wall). Throughout service, the attention to this room was not as well maintained as the main dining room - with empty plates and wine glasses going unattended for extended periods of time. One of the dishes we ordered was the duck (for 2). A dish we were told the chef would be carving it himself at carving station. However, based on our seating, it didn’t allow us to view this experience. We were able to view that many of the diners with a clear view, were immediately drawn to the experience and we could view them watching and taking photos of the experience. Missing out on this experience was disheartening as we were the ones who purchased the dish. Overall, we had a lovely dinner service but the misses on the fine details and ability to generate more than a fine meal and create an experience, are ones I wouldn’t expect from a 2-star Michelin restaurant - and more of what I’d expect at a 1-star Michelin restaurant.
Be the first to ReplyOne of the best Parisian lunch experiences!
We enjoyed a fantastic (long) lunch at Maison Rostang. The 90eur lunch menu included the famous "quenelle de brochet et sa crème de homard", a must-try.
Several amuse-bouches as well as a fantastic soufflé for dessert made for a memorable experience. Two Michelin stars well deserved. Bread & butter to die for, and an incredible wine menu for those with the corresponding budget.
