Amazing good and atmosphere
Joined this superb place almost for error, as my booking was with their downstairs oyster & champagne bar “Frank’s”. Staff made us feel welcome and offered us a seat in the restaurant straight away. Food is sublime and I got particularly impressed by the excellence of service and professionalism. I love wine and I have to say their list is one of the most inspiring I have seen in central london so far! Well done to you guys!
Be the first to ReplyFantastic french food
Second visit to Maison Francois and, if possible, even better. To start with we ordered the oeuf en gelée, pâté de campagne, charcuterie selection, comté gougeres, and anchovies and stracciatella on toast. All were excellent except the gougeres which were a touch cold and bland - this was surprising as these are often sold out and we had wanted to try these for a while. Must orders are the charcuterie and the pâté which were exquisite. For mains, I had the steak tartare which was prepared a la table. It was absolutely delicious, with plenty of worcestershire sauce, capers, tabasco etc - definite order. Puddings are served from the dessert trolley which is beautiful and all are delicious. Staff were helpful and attentive and the restaurant was atmospheric and buzzy. Wonderful dinner and can't wait to return.
Be the first to ReplyUnique, one of a kind experience!
My friends and I wanted to check out Maison Francois since the day it had opened. The initial visit was to check out the interior as we all work in the design field and this place has been one that has inspired a lot of creatives. The interior did not disappoint and the food was just an experience that topped it all. We ordered nearly everyone of their menu and ever dish was unique and absolutely delicious! There was a cool not seen before trolly going around and at first we thought it was a drinks trolly until it was dessert time and the trolley was brought to us. The waiter lifted the lid and explained every dessert in detail (each mouth watering). We all picked one each and oh my goodness…heaven!
Be the first to ReplyFirst visit - with a twist....
This was our first visit to Maison Francois. We opted for the pre-theatre menu to get a flavour of the restaurant and because it dovetailed nicely with our visit to a nearby theatre - it's close to many West End theatres. The food was excellent, the ambience pleasant and the staff convivial which made it an enjoyable visit.....until it came to the bill. The pre-theatre menu included a glass of house wine in the price. My better half asked if a glass of Rose rather than white or red was an option. The response was that it wasn't, which was fair enough, so she opted for white, as did I. However, when the wine arrived, she was given a glass of Rose with just a smile - which she was very happy with! Unfortunately, when paying the bill (via a QR code on our table), an extra £13 had been added. When queried, it was clarified to be the cost of the glass of Rose. This felt rather underhand, especially as we didn't therefore receive the glass of white included in the fixed price. It may have not been a huge cost, but we still considered it hadn't been made clear. I certainly didn't expect a restaurant like this to be slightly less than honest - which is how it felt to us. Before the unexpected issue with the bill, I would have given Maison Francois 5 stars, but it's made us think twice about visiting again, especially for a more expensive meal or occasion.
Be the first to ReplyExpensive & Disappointing
We visited this French styled restaurant recently during the evening. Six of us were dining. The food here is good but expensive. For six adults all having both a starter and main course each and then sharing a few puddings - plus a couple of bottles of wine - the bill came to £693…. This included a service charge of 15% which amounted to around £90. I should mention that my main course meat dish was served virtually cold as was my wife’s main fish dish. Whereas I asked for the cooked meat dish to be reheated, my wife was too polite to complain. My meat was re served hot but the plate was minus the vegetables previously served. Bear in mind that vegetable dishes here cost around £13 each…. For an establishments such as this charging what it does - it is unforgivable to serve dishes that should be piping hot pretty much cold! Also, this is the only establishment that I have eaten in that is charging such a high level for service: 15% rather than the now usual 12 1/2%. When I enquired if the staff received the benefit of this charge - rather than being an additional charge for dining there-the answer was that it helped to bolster their ‘minimum wage’ Overall a very expensive and disappointing experience.
Be the first to ReplyVery good pre-theatre set menu
We enjoyed a lovely two course set menu before going to the theatre. The food was very tasty and good value given the location. There are plenty of taxis nearby. Service was helpful and efficient and the room is attractive and in a good location.
Be the first to ReplyChaotic service, meh food, bad wine service
The best things I can say about this place is that the gougères are very good, the celeriac remoulade is very good, and we were seated without a reservation at 3p on New Year's Day. After that it is all down hill. Our mains arrived barely warm. My short ribs were overcooked. The sommelier poured us a second glass of a Mercurey (19£/glass) from the end of the bottle. The pour was short and had dregs. He insisted that he had poured it so there wouldn't be dregs, but there they were. We showed it to the sommelier. They did not take the glass off the bill. Very poor skills. Not going back. I really wanted to like this place.
Be the first to ReplyLovely restaurant
Lovely restaurant. I had an early dinner with my mother and we both enjoyed our food. We had the roast chicken and fries from the set menu with a lovely flatbread to start and crème caramel for dessert. The staff are attentive and helpful. The restaurant decor is beautiful and there is a lovely ambience inside . I recommend this restaurant and would definitely return.
Be the first to ReplyFor those special occasions.
As brasseries go, Madison Francois is right up there with the greats, and as London opens up again post-Covid, the district of St. James’s has a lot to be proud of in this classy eatery. Staff are attentive, helpful and intimately informed about the preparations on the menu. The food preparations themselves are quite simply culinary delights - carne and pesche alike. The ambience is just right and for an afternoon or an evening out, the right note is struck. It’s a place that’s hard on the wallet, but certainly a destination if a treat or a memorable occasion is deserved!
Be the first to ReplyOverpriced & average
Nice atmosphere but very average and definitely overpriced for what is served. Service not great and soulless, no deserts left. Better restaurants in the area for this money and we will not return.

1st visit. French high brasserie in London are typically a tourists-trap. Over priced, low quality ingredients, poor services. Not here. Tried oeuf en gelee, pate en croute, beef bordelaise, hake, creme caramel, tarte aux pommes, cafe etc... Almost all dishes were of high quality. I would suggest that the pate was too dry, lack seasoning, fat, moisture and direction in tastes. There is a world Championship for Pate-en-croute because it is one of the simplest and most difficult dish of the French repertoire. When I see the quality of the other dishes served here, I know the cuisine can do much better with that pate -and the quality of the cornichon as well btw. The wine list is not great sadly. No gem. I know this is so difficult to create a wine list in London today so I really do understand the issues there, but some good Pinot noir d' Alsace, some Morgon, Fleurie, Mondeuse, more Loire Valley etc... A good sommelier can do better than what I have seen today. On balance, the best high end French brasserie I have tasted for years here in London. The staff is attentive, very polite, a few issues I dont want to develop here but no big deal. First visit so I should not get over excited but serious stuff is happening here. Not many people at lunch time. When they serve 250 customers in the evening, does quality follow? I don't know. Based on my experience, today, at lunch time, two covers, a very good French brasserie. Keen to come back. PS: Would quality classic French music in the background add to the experience? I believe so. My view anyway.

Went for a light breakfast before a meeting nearby, sat outside, staff were welcoming and engaging. Will certainly return.
Be the first to ReplyA real gem in Mayfair.
Excellent food (they really can cook) and superb service. As a regular diner in London you can become blasé about restaurants, it was a great surprise to have a lovely experience. We’ll definitely be back soon.
Be the first to ReplyExcellent food and service with a convivial atmosphere.
This was actually one of the nicest meals we had in London. The service was warm and unpretentious from the hostesses to all the wait staff. The food was excellent and well priced. I think we were the only tourists. We were staying nearby and enjoyed seeing the art galleries nearby. Really pleasing.
Be the first to ReplyA great culinary Experience
This was my first time in this West End gem and it was certainly a repeatable experience! Obviously the food was first class but so was the atmosphere, service and ambience. I look forward to returning in the near future.
Be the first to ReplyExpensive and not worth it.
Overall was quite disappointed with our visit compared to the previous dinner in 2021. Server was nice chap, although in general the service was very slow throughout. Starters were ok, but main were a massive let down! Lamb was cold and more bone that meat (not enough meat to share as advertised) and the cod was dry! Sides good, but how can you get those wrong? Bottle of Wine wasn’t very great or cold and the would have been good to see the sommelier like before. The glass Of house white with dessert was better! Don’t think we will come Back here. Did try and email The restaurant with our concerns after the meal but no reply.
Be the first to ReplyWhat a disappointment
We went for a 50th birthday meal and were so disappointed! Supposed to be top class French food and have to rate it average at best. Our waiter was lovely but overall the experience was a real let down. The worst was the shared shoulder of lamb that was supposed to feed 2 people and was barely enough for one! I have never seen such an emaciated lamb shoulder and to charge £70 for it was absolutely outrageous. I also expected the roast chicken to be on another level but it did not even have a crispy skin!! Some of our party who had the pork and the veal enjoyed it, but you would not expect such an expensive restaurant to be so hit and miss. Would suggest that you avoid if you’re looking for a really special night out.
Be the first to ReplyGood food
Really enjoyed the Maison Francois with friends. We mostly engulfed in conversation and laughter and didn’t pay much attention to our surroundings. Food flavours and taste great. Service a tad slow but acceptable. Music too loud - we could sometimes not hear each other - like disco! We were the last left on the evening and had a good time.

Beautiful location and super cool place. Service was excellent I had breakfast and coffee was good too….will come back to try dinner now!
Unfortunately Price are really high
Would have been excellent if not for the trolley wally incident
A Gallic-style all-day brasserie within walking distance of Green Park Station and a stone’s throw of Fortnum and Mason.
Frank’s, the bar we started in was in the basement. It was quite dark. The wine list had tiny writing and so was hard to read. A larger font would do nicely, and lighter surrounds perhaps.
The Gougeres cheese puff balls were delicious. We had to fight over the final one going spare. And so too the braised ox cheek. Washed down with what turned out to be an expensively priced Pour Ma Queule Clos des Fous.
At £45 a bottle, plus 15% service, for a £13 plonk? - was a bit of a p*** take.
In fact, when the sommelier said she would sample it for me, I came out in a cold sweat. That little swig could have well cost me £2.15!
The Terrane Rouges Labastide de Levis 2018, at £30 a pop, had less of a markup. Still... three times the ten-quid-a-bottle price tag found in some wine merchants. Even Fortnum and Mason has lower priced wines I'm certain.
The ambiance was a little overbearing, both in Franks and in the restaurant that we moved to upstairs. But that could be more to do with me having imposter syndrome. It was very upmarket. It would take a little bit of time for me to get used to for sure.
But I did plan on returning as we had a great meal and evening.
Until that is shortly after the presentation of the joy that is said to be the Maison François dessert trolley. This is when things went – “frankly” – south.
The restaurant has published widely that it is headed by 36-year-old restaurateur the Honourable Francois Hugh Nial O'NEILL. (His father’s the 3rd Baron Rathcavan.) Known as “Frank” to his mates, he was nowhere to be seen when I later felt compelled to lodge the complaint.
The young woman who brought the dessert trolley was really attentive and sweet. (No pun intended.) However due to my guest taking some time over choosing a dessert, the head waiter suddenly stormed over and pulled the trolley away. Leaving us somewhat shocked.
He lamely claimed that another customer needed it, which turned out to be untrue. Because he then placed it near an empty wall and proceeded to furtively dress down the young waitress. Presumably for taking too long at our table. But she had done nothing other than take time with some customers. Actually, even though the doors had only just opened some of the staff did seem to be in a pressure cooker. Two of the female waiters were really convivial. One of these had presented the dessert trolley. Hence my defence of her position.
We were upset. The young woman’s treatment clearly showed on her face. A “head” waiter gets about £12-£15ph at Maison Francois, so lord knows what she was on. However, judging by the waiter who took our dessert trolley, I reckon he was on £12 too much. So, what was a memorable experience to say the least, was spoilt by this curious behaviour.
Despite all its aristocratic splendour, I wasn’t going to let this go though. I demanded to speak with the owner or manager. But I got someone else who was seemingly of the same seniority as the rude ****waiter. He apologised. Offered the desserts for free. But, and here’s the rub, with so many aristocrats either running the business or sat at tables quaffing the overpriced wines, I wondered if they would have let matters go too. I doubt it. And, as far as I'm concerned, when you pay those prices, we're all aristos
Chez Restaurants Ltd trades under the style “Maison Francois”. Despite what newspapers say, according to files lodged at Companies House, Lord Michael David Glendonbrook has held significant control since October 2019.
The 78-year-old Conservative was created a life peer in 2011 and is said to be worth well over £200m.
Given the mark up on the wines, this comes as little surprise.
One final gripe... On studying the bill later, I had been charged an extra £4 ‘Charity Donation’? Without any enquiry as to whether I even wanted to make it. And I actually already contribute towards the charity in question.
I've marked down on the service due to the trolley wally incident.
Nice bistro food in a grand setting but rather expensive
The decor is lovely and service was professional and courteous throughout.
The food is simply presented and tasted good but without the wow factor. The three fish main courses were well prepared but with added side dishes cost around £40 each, the 1/4 breast of chicken rather cheaper. Desserts from the trolley were excellent and the pre-meal gougeres very nice.
The wine list is well presented but prices very much on the high side, a £14 bottle of 5 FinquesRreserva from Castillo Peralada was priced at £70 and a £12 Chateau Grand Village Blanc was £62!!
There was an additional £4 Ukraine Charity Donation, £4 for bread which we did not ask for and a whopping 15% service charge.
Quite a nice meal with friends but at these prices we are unlikely to go back.
Beautiful space and delicious food.
Not your average French Bistro. It's better. If you're after the usual French favourites, look elsewhere. If it's new ground breaking food offering you are after, this place is right up your rue-ally.
A beautiful space, coupled with really good food, an extensive wine list and lovely attentive service. A perfect excuse to dress up for the night.
Second time visiting and extremely poor service from some staff
I have visited this restaurant twice now and returned as the food was exceptional. However this most recent visit was let down by utterly poor service from some members of staff. The entrance desk is small and we were held back by a clueless lady taking an age to put on a coat whilst she readjusted every small crease, made all the more worse as the three restaurant staff stood watching aimlessly whilst all the other customers were queuing to enter. We were taken down to Franks bar and plonked into a corner and just sat there for 15 minutes before I managed to flag someone down to take a drinks order. 15 minutes after that, the drinks arrived by which time we were invited to take our place at the table upstairs. So just another pointless time wasting experience. The service at the table was attentive without being overbearing and the food was excellent with a very interesting menu, but main courses took about an hour to arrive after we had had the starters. Tables who arrived after us were for some reason served before us. All in all, exceptionally cooked food let down by service delivered by staff who are employed to just stand there and watch the world go by.
Be the first to ReplyShocking
Sadly my 2nd bad experience here ... last time the sommelier who is still there was so rude I ordered the cheapest wine on the list.
Tonight it was a case of can we pay please oh the bill is via a QR code app the customer has to do all the work and when I would clear annoyance and verbal abuse about me needing to pay in the old way..... well your food is good but no thanks rude service is rude service good luck to you
Great service and food
From the warm welcome by Almut and the excellent champagne cocktails we had an excellent lunch. The food is superb with such care taken with the small elements eg the cabbage was superb. The wine list is comprehensive and good value. Highly recommended
