Excellent Holiday Meal
We enjoyed the Christmas weekend menu. Food was exceptional - one dish had caviar, an egg, and other items and it was absolutely out of this world. Thoroughly enjoyed the wine pairing as well.
Be the first to ReplyGreat meal, needs a better story
Just what you would expect from a Michelin star restaurant. They only offer a tasting menu, and while the price for the basic tasting menu seems like a bargain at 165, they offered two supplement dishes which you would be crazy not to order considering you're already there, making the total around $200 $250 for the experience. When I say experience, that's really what it is, as you would expect from a tasting menu at a Michelin star restaurant. It's not really dinner so much as it is theater. If I had one qualm, I would say that the servers did not really do much to tell the story of the tasting menu but all of the dishes were perfectly cooked and presented. Side note: we are gluten-free, and they really did a great job accommodating us with a replacement dish for their tortelloni and a special dessert instead of their chocolate cake
Be the first to ReplyWonderful find in Marin...perfect for special occassion
Small restaurant with minimalist Japanese vibe and decor. Shared a lovely birthday dinner here with friends and we were not disappointed. First, don't compare to someplace like French Laundry. You will not get that level of pomp and circumstance. Food: wonderful, tasty, and artfully presented. As diners, we did not have to wear a mask, however, the waiter did and it was hard to hear her tell us about each course. Each course was well paced to the next. I didn't care for the mousse with trout roe, however, one of ten courses isn't bad. The salmon, beef, and ravioli were the best. Wine list: looked good, but we brought out own bottle, and paid corkage. We were 30 mins early and there is no waiting area or bar within Madcap. Go next door to the pub. Note: Gratuity is included in the bill and they graciously told us that. Parking: street and some lot parking. Took us a bit to find on a Saturday night. Bathroom: narrow hall to access and one unisex bathroom.
Be the first to ReplyDisappointing
Went to try it out based on a post on FB. We were very disappointed. Here are the issues: - Waiter proudly announced that the Salmon is farmed new Zealand Salmon. This is really disappointing since we have such great wild salmon that is in season right now. Why serve farmed Salmon? - Everything seemed rushed. The service is good, but we felt they were in a rush to get every dish served as fast as possible. Would really have preferred them to slow down. - Food seems a confused. Loads of foam and sauce, but the star ingredient never shines through. You don't taste the main ingredient and some things (fig with steak) seem like an afterthought on the plate. We couldn't taste any truffle on the truffle dish and the caviar flavor was lost in a soup of foam/sauce. - Portion size is also hugely inconsistent. The two of use had very different portions served. The desert which should be precise was inconsistent and the chocolate base ranged in thickness from 1/4 inch to over an inch in the one small slice. - I'd also prefer to decide what to tip instead of them including the 20% as a standard. If you include the tip as standard, then just include it in your prices. Staff were friendly and attentive and earned the tip, but we won't be back.
Be the first to ReplyA Wonderful New Yearโs Eve
Decided on this small restaurant in San Anselmo for our New Yearโs Eve celebration and we are so glad we did. It was a perfect experience from start to finish. The chilled oyster as a starter was one wonderful bite. There was a soft cooked egg with candycap mushroom spuma. Yum!! Sashimi, black cod, every course was prepared to perfection. The space is very warm and welcoming. The staff is great and the Chef came out to see how we enjoyed the evening. We did immensely and will definitely be back for another beautiful meal.

Very nice, but also quite expensive. But we converted from USD to SEK and that is not reala fair assessment of the price.
Be the first to ReplyOutstanding japanese/French Cusine
California chef Ron who beat Japanese Iron Chef Sakei in lobster challenge operates this French/Japanese Restuarant. My friend suggested tasting meal. He made the right decision. Every portion size were small bite but will filled you up by the time the mea completes. Their deserts are outstanding too! Full of flavor in every dish. It seems more japanese then French although Ron started off as French chef. Maybe he was influenced after the competition with iron chef Sakei? ๐ค Itโs fine dinning but not super expensive for โTasting Menuโ (about $100/pax). Worth every dollar! Suggest you do reservation to avoid disappointment.
Be the first to ReplyA bit disappointing
Having undertaken a fair amount of research we were looking forward to the experience, unfortunately Madcap didn't quite live up to the hype. Each of the courses was extremely pleasing to the eye but all in all the flavours were missing and one occasion seemingly omitted. Appreciate that some of the dished were unique in nature but in the case of the rabbit ravioli should not have been promoted from the development stage of the menu. The staff were lovely and knowledgeable in what is a very busy venue.
Be the first to ReplyFinally - a top quality restaurant in Marin County
What a very, very pleasant surprise! After we were partrons of the โForkโ Restaurant many years ago, we are very, very happy to have tried the MADCAP tonight. We had โa la carteโ 1. The Octopus - Rating: 9 then 2. Pork Belly: Rating: 9.5 (I wish 2 pieces as I live food) 3. THE HIGH LIGHT - The Duck - Out of this world - a 11 (not 10). If you can maintain the high level of quality, we will see u at least once a month. Thank you!!! Fritz & Rowena

This was a top rate dining experience from start to finish. Located on a corner in the lovely city of San Anselmo is this very fine restaurant. We soon saw why they have a Michelin rating, from the service and food, down to the fine ceramics that highlights several local artists. The restaurant is on the small side but don't let that fool you because the experience is worth living.
Be the first to ReplyA first rate fining dining restaurant.
Madcap is a welcome addition to Marin County. We dined last evening and it was excellent. Service was first-rate; attentive but not overwhelming. Food was truly superb. Decor probably not going to win an award, but very comfortable with the tables nicely spaced. Wine, but no full bar. When presented the menu and wine list we noticed that a flight of sake was on offer and thought that was a bit unusual. But we did not know then that the food reflects a Japanese influence. It is not a Japanese restaurant, but the influence can be seen in the presentation and the taste of the food. The chef "pulls this off" very nicely. As it was an anniversary we ordered the tasting menu with paired wines (which included one sake). It was a great dinner. Again, while not a Japanese restaurant the courses very much had a kaiseki touch. The wines matched the courses very well. We thought the price/quality ratio was well within reason given the fact that we ordered the tasting menu with accompanying wines. The tab was a bit over $400 for two for everything. As the web page reflects, one can have a starter and main for considerably less if you are not celebrating with a menu degustation. It is not inexpensive, but it is certainly worth the price. I believe Chef Ron Siegel took a Michelin Star this year; it was deserved. We will be back.
Be the first to ReplyExcellent dinner at Madcap Marin Friday night
Dined at madcap in san enselmo in Marin on an early seating Friday night. Tasting menu including various Japanese seafood, abalone, rabbit and dry aged rib eye and dark chocolate dessert. Chef owner is Ron Siegel of Masa, dining room at Ritz Carlton and Michael Mina fame. A la carte and tasting menu available. Small place and great service.
