Lunasia Dim Sum House Pasadena Reviews from The Last Year
One of my most favorite places to eat.
The service isn't as attentive as it was pre-pandemic and you have to use the QR code to see the menu and order but we still love going there. Their Beef Chow Mein is one of my must orders...as is the Filet in Black Pepper Sauce. My friend always gets 2 orders of Har Gow - the shrimp are always so fresh. I also love the shrimp with spinach dim sum - I'd love it if the skins were thinner but the filling is delicious. I wish I could get there more often!!
Significantly overpriced.
Food is ok but significantly overpriced. Not worth your time unless you speak Chinese. Service is terrible. Not going back again.
Great food and reasonable price.
We went there on Mother's Day. Signed up for waiting list through the yelp. (At 12pm) Waited 1 hour then they called me our table was ready. The service was fast and quick despite of the busy day. It's a small place and popular spot! I'd love to come here again next time!
This review is solely based on the service.
5/12 mothers day. We placed an order at 11:23am, for 12:15pm pick up but we arrived at 12:30. We check in and right away we're told that the kitchen is behind on all take out orders, which is fine. But with expected delays one would assume that a system is in place for making sure people are out of there as soon as possible, no the blonde hostess continues to repeat that the orders are behind with attitude. By 1:30Pm over an 1hr and 15 minutes over our pick up time we decided to cancel our order and when another employee comes up to help us with the cancellation she whispers to the blonde hostess acknowledging that we have waited over an hr to which the blonde hostess says "they can just wait" although she had said that facing her co-worker, even if you're frustrated I don't understand how being openly rude in front of the customer is ever right. At least do so in the back or go vent in the walk in fridge. We always kept an upbeat tonality while talking to her so I don't quite understand why we got so much attitude back.
I joined a group for a dinner here.
We all ordered using our phones and from their website. It was a bit stressful to consider how we would spilt the bill but we figured it out. One person agreed to cover everything and we all paid our portion equally. He also placed a few orders to get us started by asking if we'd eat the things we ordered. It's a fun way to try a lot of different things but with some plates you just get 3 pieces and the plate costs $9 so I didn't get to try everything or sometimes just a literal bite. Everything tasted great. I'd definitely like to go again with a smaller group maybe 4 instead of 12.
After visiting Pasadena from LA and having dim sum at
After visiting Pasadena from LA and having dim sum at Lunasia, I don't understand why it is so popular. We ordered string beans, har gow, the shrimp wonton soup, pan-fried pork dumplings, vegetable dumplings and the custard tarts. The soup was the best dish. The wontons were heavy and dense, but it was flavorful. The pork dumplings, har gow and tarts were fine; we've had better ones elsewhere, but they were all serviceable. But it was the large plate of string beans and the vegetable dumplings (in a "crystal" wrapper) which left us confounded. We saw the servers bring out about six plates of string beans at once, delivered to different tables; so we assumed we were getting a fresh "batch." But the beans were lukewarm, flaccid and tough to chew, and the strings had not been removed. They tasted old. As my partner said, "This is not Din Tai Fung." The three huge vegetable dumplings were horrible. The crystal "wrapping" was soggy, and the mixture inside looked and tasted like boiled, unseasoned daikon; tasteless, white and mushy. There wasn't a discernible shred of vegetable. Nothing green, no mushrooms. We ate one and were done. Perhaps if we'd ordered differently, our food would have been better. Perhaps it was an off day. But a truly great restaurant makes everything well; and our experience was less than mediocre. We won't return.
Good service and the food tastes good as well.
Great place to try with the family if you are craving for Dim Sum.
The food was delicious.
The menu was online and you ordered and they brought the food over to your table. I loved that the online menu had pictures! The place itself was a little chilly but I adjusted to the temperature shortly after being there. Overall great experience and would come again!
Hands down my favorite dim sum place! It is on the pricier
Hands down my favorite dim sum place! It is on the pricier side, but if you compare it to other popular Michelin-guide dim sum places in the SGV, it is pretty similar, and I personally enjoy Lunasia so much more! Har Gow: Jumbo, filling, delicious 10/10 Shumai: I'm not really a shumai person so I can't rate this. But I did take a bite and it was delicious! Cucumber: portion is HUGE - picture on menu is deceiving. Flavor is not too strong and it is addicting. Very refreshing. 9/10 Egg tofu in Abalone sauce: probably my favorite. Egg tofu is soft while the outside skin is chewy and hot. 10/10 Scallop squid ink: 8/10. Tastes like a chewier har gow but good for pictures. We tried other food items as well, overall a great experience. Will be taking guests from out of town here from now on!
I didn't like this place for a few reasons.
The taste of the food was nothing impressive or unique. Dimsum is supposed to be small portions of small foods but Lunasia specializes in jumbo size for some of the dishes which were way too much for my mom and I to finish. We also did not love how there was no service. When I say no service, I mean there was barely any human interaction. When you walk in, you put your name on the iPad's waiting list, you're seated by a person, you place your order on your phone through a QR code, and the next time you talk to someone is when you ask for the check. I've worked in the food and beverage industry my whole life and I know the importance of tipping, since it is how I make money, but I don't feel tipping should even be an option at this place. The decor of the restaurant is pretty and space was perfect for what it was but I was a little disappointed because all the reviews were so good.
Very good all around
We were here twice in July, both times with friends, one of whom introduced us to Lunasia for the very first time. The food is very good, service was good to very good. Prices are higher than the average dimsum restaurant, though portions for some dishes were larger than the average. One thing I didn’t like was requirement for a cell phone app to order your food. However, food was hot, cooked to order and came within a reasonable length of time – better than the traditional ‘push-cart’.
Perfect for large groups and singles
I have dined here for business meals and I absolutely loved the overall experience. Today, I was able to enjoy a dinner with our family (13 of us together - teens and adults). We had the most spectacular experience. A combination of DimSum and entrees. Jumbo Shrimp Har-Gow, Shrimp & Pork Siu-Ma, Steamed B.B.Q. Pork Bao, Crispy Shrimp Roll, Pain-Friod String Beans, Poking Duck w/ 'Steamed Buns, Kung-Pao Chicken, Shrimp Rice Noodle Roll, and a Lobster dish. Our server helped us select our family feast. We also had potstickers and egg rolls. Lots of tea!! Excellent service and incredible food. Street parking was quite easy for three families.

The dim sum is always incredible here. Especially anything with shrimp in it. They even have dim sum available for dinner

Pretty crazy, but cracking down will cost them a lot to maintain. They probably will lose the fight.

In my experience they will typically restore your reservation if you say it was an error.
