Worth a try
Ordering correctly here, the chef's more laudable classics, is probably important...in fact key. For first time customers, that isn't easy. For example, I dislike fat, thickly cut frites, which they serve. The small side salad accompanying the croque was drenched in dressing. The Dame Blanche (dessert) consisted of a tiny amount of ice cream topped with heaps of whipped cream in a very small parfait cup. Disappointing and a bit of an insult to this simple, yet yummy traditional classic. On the happy side, a full 5 stars for the sausage au four and puree, along with the beet root, trout caviar and smoked haddock entree ! These are examples of "ordering correctly' to have full appreciation for the chef's talents. Epi d'or has a wonderful history and a memorable ambiance. As this was the main reason for our lunch choice, it met with all expectations. The meal might have been slightly more appealing had the waiter not occupied too much time chatting. He was also a bit pushy (although well-meaning), insisting I order something different than I had.

We wanted to experience the new direction taken by Jean Francois Pièges, we all have memories in this almost mythical place My opinion shared by my guests is summed up by the biggest disappointment of the old bistro menu You don't sense a chef in a hat but a businessman So let's list, reservation at 7 p.m. well on time the room manager warned us that we will have to leave at 9 p.m. (no comment) Small, tiny starters to share are stupid The dish, the only slow-cooked dish on the small menu, is a very ordinary blanquette, without any generosity of taste (I should point out the small plate with a diameter close to a dessert plate. Let's finish with my dessert 'rice pudding' recipe to review, excellent orange blossom ice cream for the other guests I won't talk about a bad place, I'm one, it's a place to leave to tourists (the poor), but not to you Parisians in the neighborhood Sorry. I will end with a trap to avoid.

I have known this restaurant for 25 years, I hadn't been there for 3 years and I came away really disappointed. First of all, I don't really like it when my plate of charcuterie is so messed with by the waiter on the bar to put it together, it's not very appetizing, but hey, that's how it often happens in the kitchen. Furthermore, on the other hand, the size of the portions that were served to us were embarrassing, I ate my tab in three bites and again to take my time. We also go to a bistro to eat and in terms of prices, there is a minimum of decency to respect

This restaurant was simply amazing! The food was delicious and the atmosphere was so cozy! The staff were friendly and welcoming but never overbearing. I liked the fact that most of the guests were French, which says a lot! I'm in Paris a lot and would definitely go back!

Those who were expecting a two-star restaurant from JF Piège will inevitably be disappointed, for others, those who come for a bistro in its own right will appreciate the setting, the homemade fries and the totally regressive rice pudding from the owner! A little expensive, others might say? Yes maybe and even dessert dish at 37€ it's still cheap in the neighborhood!

Very moderately friendly waiters. Very average food. Not bad but really nothing special. Bad value for money...

AMBIANCE/DÉCOR This is chef Jean-Francois Piege’s fifth restaurant. The second purchase of a long-established more modest restaurant (see La Poule au Pot). I’m sure Piege’s CFO and operations head spends time there, but this is a distant connection to his world class Le Grand Restaurant (see). I never ate at (or knew) Epi D’Or in its original 1920’s version. Physically, nothing much could have changed. It is intentionally so. This is no re-creation. It is as it was left by its former owners. That’s not all bad. It helps create the strong energy which is the restaurant’s best attribute. Full, uncomfortable, jammed. It is a small space with 40-50 seats, a prominent bar flanked by tiny tables for 2 and an open closet of a kitchen manned at a packed dinner service by a young chef and one helper (there must be prep and dishwasher in the basement). I’m sure people were having fun, all ages and nationalities. Prices appear low (although it adds up); walk-ins turned away. FOOD The food? It’s an issue, and not the highlight. Actually, at any price, it was a disappointment, both what was served and what wasn’t. The unique feature presumably carried over from the 1920’s is a very limited menu with a daily menu of 3 widely advertised courses offered every week. It was Monday, so the offer was ricotta gnocchi in a (delicious) fresh tomato sauce, duck confit and whipped cream with pastry dessert. So, we knew from the date we reserved what we would eat. Except at 8:00 p.m. on Monday, no duck. How can that be, contradicting the key feature of the restaurant’s format? Maybe worse, an hour later when I walked past the open kitchen, what did I see? Two orders of duck, saved, I assumed, for special guests. More confusing, in substitution I was offered pork belly with leeks (pretty good). But this is a slow-cooked dish, not something pulled out of the refrigerator when they run out of duck. This was planned. We were disappointed, glad to have tried it, but are not considering returning. SERVICE Service was not very good; two hard-working waiters in the entire restaurant setting and cleaning tables, opening and serving wine, taking orders, greeting guests and frequently stopping to close the front door. I’ve never seen two harder working staff, and keeping it together, more or less. PRICES 155€ for two.

Excellent restaurant with a good choice of typical French dishes. The menu changes every week, so it is difficult to recommend a typical dish. But I think all the dishes will be very tasty.
Be the first to ReplyOne of our favourite meals on our Europe trip!
We visited this restaurant after originally intending to go to one of the owner's other places but failing to get a restaurant, and it certainly did not disappoint! Right from the beginning, we were super impressed by the amazing service and hospitality of the staff. My boyfriend ordered the fish, while I had the steak hache. We also had the side green salad, which my boyfriend thought was the best salad he'd ever had. If we had had another night in Paris, we might have tried to come back to try to the set daily menu. An absolutely amazing place with delicious food and great service!

I've been a happy diner at the Epi d'Or for many years, so when I heard that it was under new ownership I was worried that the fabulous Parisian bistro deco would disappear. How wonderful to discover that on the contrary, it's still intact, but sparkling with a new dynamic and a menu to match.
On a recent visit I found perfect service, good French food at reasonable prices and a priceless piece of old-world Paris that money can't buy.
Any critics should understand that the last 2 years of pandemic ( March 2020 - Febuary 2022 ) have been a challenge for restaurants and hotels and even finding staff is a struggle - bravo to the Epi d'Or for opening the doors and giving us such a warm welcome.
ONE STAR FOR EVERYTHING
The restaurant excels at one thing: being mediocre. Not sure why it has so many positive reviews as the food was either extremely bland or oversalted. The lentil salad was salty and overcooked. I honestly had better pate from a café.
While the food is mediocre, the service is even worse. The staff lives up to the Parisian stereotypes of being rude, cold, and unfriendly. The waiters rushed me throughout my meal, asking me multiple times if they could clear my table while I was still eating. The restaurant was not even at full capacity, yet the staff were frantic. I felt rushed throughout my meal. It was truly an unpleasant dining experience.
Literally go to any other restaurant in Paris for a better experience.
Absolutely atrocious service and food
The service here is terrible. The servers are inattentive and rush you to order your food, eat, and leave the restaurant. The servers are frantic, unprofessional, and interrupt you when you ask a question without actually understanding what you are asking. The server asked us if we were done with our food thrice.
The manager misunderstood our drink orders and when we said that one of them was not what we wanted, she still charged us for the item that we sent back. She refused to remove it from the check. Absolutely no awareness for customer service.
The food is also basic and not good. In a city with amazing restaurants and great customer service, this is not one of them and should be skipped.
Busy lunch spot, run-of-the-mill Parisian bistro
Busy venue primarily frequented by locals-regulars enjoying lunch with a few glasses of red . They offer the typical French bistro menu, no complaints on the food quality and service (staff was friendly and prompt).
