Lotus of Awesome
I love, love, love Lotus of Siam. This is the best restaurant in Las Vegas AND the best Thai restaurant in the United States. I dine from Lotus routinely, twice per month on average, and I make an effort to try something new each time (though I always get Issan sausage and Panang curry, in addition). I have been impressed every single time.
My pro-tip is to order take out and avoid the hassle of making a reservation. Your food will be prepared and packaged promptly, par excellence, but even if you find yourself waiting at the bar for a few minutes, you will find yourself well taken care of.
This is a bucket list place for locals and out-of-towers alike.
Still great after 20+ years
We started coming here years ago when the restaurant maybe sat 30 people total. Now they have 2 locations and each could probably serve 300 in normal times. Social distancing is in play and you still must make a reservation. One of the more popular places in town. Try a Thai basic Pad Thai to compare to your favorite Thai place and you will agree. We have tried numerous things over the years and have never been disappointed
Be the first to ReplyLove Thai, and this place offers an alternate view, specializing in Northern style Thai food.
When in Vegas, almost like being in NYC, you can pretty much find any cuisine you're looking for. Lotus of Siam came very high recommended and my buddy and I decided to give it a try.
Given the Covid restrictions in Nevada, you need to have a reservation, so I made one on Resy the day before.
This location is in a huge strip mall just east of the strip, past the Westgate. Easy enough to get here via Uber.
Upon entering, you are greeting and asked for reservation information. The place is cavernous and they do a good job of spacing out the tables to be safe. We were seating in room back behind the bar that had about 4 or 5 tables completely spaced out. I liked that very much.
The one thing I didn't realize, is that this place is known for NORTHERN Thai cuisine. I didn't know there was such a distinction, so I was eager to learn and try some things outside the norm of what I usually order when having the urge for Thai. There's a whole section on the menu with items that cover this area.
I would have given this place FIVE STARS. There was just a couple of nit picky things that knocked it down one.
When I asked about some of the regional differences of the food, there didn't seem to be too much interest in educating me. It was kind of like "pick something." One of the main appetizers I always like to get is the traditional Thom Kah Kai soup, with the coconut milk & chicken. I saw there was "Northern" version, and I wondered what the difference was. My server said that it was more like a meal and would come in a huge bowl. When I asked if I could get it as an app, it wasn't possible. Seems odd that here I am willing to be adventurous to taste something, and it would have been easy for them to oblige, but they chose not to. As a result, I just ordered the standard Thom Kah Kai soup, and it was awesome, but it would have been cool to taste the Northern version. Ball dropped here.
I also did go ahead and order the Khao Soi which is a Northern style dish. I got it with beef and I will say it was very, very good. Lots of good spice.
We also washed down all our food with Thai beer.
The only other thing that I noticed, and I sort of get it, due to limited capacity and the popularity of this place, is there seemed to be a sense of trying to move us in and out of the establishment with a bit quicker pace then normal.
I did manage to order the banana dessert and it was a nice way to cut through a bit of the spiciness of the evening.
All in all, the food that I did have was very good, and even with the minor hiccups I experienced, I would highly recommend this place if you have a hankering for Thai food while rollin' the dice in Vegas!
Khao Soi with Crispy Duck
If there’s one thing to get here, it’s the Khao Soi with Crispy Duck. Or anything with the Crispy Duck. Do not leave here without trying the Crispy Duck. Seriously. Wonderfully crispy and perfectly fatty, my mouth is watering just thinking about it.
I first tried this place in 2013. Already famous and critically acclaimed, I was curious what all the hype was about. What stood out distinctly in that first visit was the stark contrast between limos dropping off fancily dressed patrons in front of this hole in a wall restaurant in a random Vegas strip mall. I remember the food being good, but still didn’t understand what all the hype was about. Fast forward to 2 days ago and I finally get it. Don’t order what you’d normally get at your favorite Thai place, just skip straight to their Northern Thai section and order from there. These are the dishes that set this place apart. But if you had to get just one dish, definitely make it the Khao Soi with Crispy Duck.
Critically acclaimed Thai Restaurant
Critically acclaimed Thai eatery in a strip mall. Obviously this is a super popular place, and I’ve been eyeing this spot after seeing Anthony Bourdain eat here. As other people have noted, order off the Northern Thai menu and make a reservation online. Parking is free and available in the lot. Credit cards are accepted, and they’re open for dine-in/takeout during covid (masks a required). Here’s a breakdown of what we ate:
Khao Soi with crispy duck: yes it’s more expensive than the rest of the menu, but it’s well worth it. The sauce is creamy and the noodles are nicely chewy, but the duck is the true standout. I loved how crispy the skin still stayed even after being soaked in the sauce. You must order this.
Northern Larb: another standout dish. It’s spicy and comes with rice (which you should definitely eat to temper down the spiciness).
Nam Prik Noom: I’d describe this as like a Thai salsa verde that you eat with veggies/chicharon. The medium spicy still had all our tongues burning. It’s more of an appetizer than a meal, but a good option for any vegetarians (ignoring the pork rinds of course).
Sai Oua: Honestly, I was a bit disappointed by this. The sausage was dry and has a strong ginger flavor. It came with veggies on the side.
Sticky Rice with Mango: just like the sticky rice you’d get in Thailand, with a wonderfully chewy texture and some crunchy things on the top. The mango was also appropriately ripe.
The restaurant is a lot bigger than it appears from the outside. While there weren’t any outdoor seating options, the tables are spaced far apart and the waiters are all wearing masks. Service seemed a bit stretched thin, but the restaurant seemed constantly bustling, so it’s all good. Overall, I’m glad I had the chance to eat here, as I’m sure many other people are.
Anthony Bourdain's Review set the bar too high - Location stinks however
We were awed by Anthony Bourdain's review and decided we had to try it for ourselves. We're not authentic Thai experts, but we know what we like. The service was awesome. Glasses were constantly filled, straw wrappers removed, that in and of itself was a pleasant surprise. Imagine the ball person running around a Wimbledon court, and this is what our table was like.
Service aside the food was good but not f'in amazing. It was on par with some of the best tasting Thai food we've had in our travels. It wasn't above and beyond all other Thai food however; and that was the implicit promise from the deceased Mr. Bourdain.
Did we like it? yes. Was the location in what looked like a bombed out strip mall from the 70s? yes again. Was is the best f'n amazing Thai food we've ever had? Not so much.
They have a 2nd location which the reviews say is much better looking, but the food isn't supposed to be as good. Style over substance? Eh, maybe we'll keep looking for a place that has both.
Good food, but you cannot tell from outside.
Heard good things about this place so we had to visit on our LV trip. With the plague, we didn't think to make a reservation for a mid-week night. That was a mistake as we had to wait an hour for a table.
Good food, good drinks. The use of spices is excellent. Prices are a little higher than what I've experienced elsewhere for Thai. Then again, they are not a James Beard award winner.
Good experience, but make reservations!
Location does not feel great
Second time to visit, but first time to this location. Delicious food, not so great neighborhood.
The beef wontons were fantastic, as were the Tom Kha and Tom Yum soups. Followed by shrimp pad thai, red curry, and pineapple fried rice. It was too much food, but boxed up the leftovers to go.
Total with tip was about $93.
Social distancing was adhered to and seemed to work ok since the space is huge.
Make a reservation!
This is the original!
Don’t be dissuaded by the location or the outside appearance. Food is outstanding and not expensive by Las Vegas standards. Crunchy rice appetizer was flavorful and had a tough of heat. Short ribs melted in your mouth. Crispy duck with drunken noodles was a winner and the curry egg noodle with pork turned out to be very mild. Should have asked for more heat. Sweet iced coffee was also a winner. Because of location, I rate it a hidden gem.
