Nice place with good food
Very busy place at night, reservations must be made but we still waited. The food is very good, several options but the cheeseburger is of excellent quality. Good range of drinks and wines, and you can bring a bottle with corkage. Good service.

Let's be honest: LAG is the only place in Los Altos with the cocktails, ambiance, and food that is worth the time, money and effort to get a reservation in Los Altos...or Mountain View... or Sunnyvale...or Redwood City? Anyway ... Excellent Steaks. Excellent French Dip. Roasted artichokes. Cornbread. Good wine list. Generous cocktails. Comfy booths. Sometimes some live music to improve your evening. Horseshoe bar. They know what they're doing. I've eaten here dozens of times. Never had a bad meal, let alone poor service. Go.

Lunch is quieter vs. evening is a happening vibe! Outstanding menu using fresh ingredients. Individual cornbreads a delight! Good cocktails and wine list. Great place to take visiting guests. Reservations needed in evening.
Be the first to ReplyWhat's happened to the Los Altos Grill? Good food and service were missing.
Very disappointed with dinner tonight. We were celebrating our daughter's birthday and engagement. This was one of our daughter's favorite restaurants, which is why we went here tonight. The restaurant wasn't super busy so no real reason for lackluster food and service. We'd been to Los Altos Grill several times and always had excellent food and service. Tonight fell well short of that. The menu was very limited - no specials had to ask server questions, and he provided no information upfront. The food was just okay - nothing special, bland at best. The ribeye steak was thin and not great; 3 puny BBQ ribs; In N Out burger puts the LAG burger to shame (for about 1/4 the cost); and Ahi Tartare was bland, and needed Tabasaco to give it any flavor. The best thing was the queso dip appetizer. We had to continue asking for water, drink glasses were smaller than a juice glass. I know we're coming out of a drought, but give more than a thimble full of water. I don't often write reviews, but I read them all the time and just thought I needed to share our disappointment so that other readers had this perspective. If you try LAG, I hope you have a better experience than we did tonight. So, so disappointed.

Great food and a rich atmosphere. Felt like I was dining with the wealthiest people in the world and probably was.

Recommend making reservations as they are always fully booked for dinner. Desert offering changes often. If available key lime pie is favorite.
Be the first to ReplyVibrant atmosphere, efficient service, good (but not great) food
This a delightful restaurant, definitely worth a visit. Most portions are super-sized, which makes it difficult to calibrate how to order. Some items we ordered were delicious, while others (the appetizers, mainly) were okay not great.
Be the first to ReplyService Has Fallen Off
We have been fans of Los Altos Grill since it opened in about 1997. They seem to have had trouble adapting to the return to normalcy recently, though. The last few times we have come in the service has been choppy, and this evening - a birthday dinner for our son - things went off the rails. We were made to wait 25 minutes for the table we had reserved, and even though we were promised a free appetizer (not enough compensation for that much inconvenience), it was not made good on the bill. Our waitress was helpful and nice, but was required to tend bar as well as wait tables, so even after we were seated things were very slow. Food was as good as ever, but it will be a long time before we come here again.
Be the first to ReplyThe bar has been neutered
We're not coming back until the bar wait list is gone and the bar is back to full capacity, signalling that The Grill has reemerged from its COVID slump. The bar used to be the center of this iconic treasure, with Silicon Valley movers, cougars, gold diggers, and just regular folk happily mingling and having a great time. It was the best show in town! But the bar restrictions have neutered this unique scene, making The Grill just another pricey steak place.
If you like your dining experience to be fun like we do, there are way better alternatives right now with outdoor seating on Main Street, or Castro Street in Mountain View, or Murphy Street in Sunnyvale, or Laurel Street in San Carlos, etc. You don't have to settle for boring. Hopefully The Grill will find its way back to its former glory soon, get rid of the bar wait list, and the good times will roll once more! Once this happens we'll be back, but not before.
Meanwhile, The Grill's small but excellent menu remains strong. The Hawaiian Rib Eye and Ribs are our favorites. The Caesar and kale salads are great as well. Sadly, Porsche appears to be the only long-time bartender to still be there. She is wonderful, as ever. And the martinis are the best in the Silicon Valley!
Here's hoping The Grill will find its way back soon.
Racist management !
The manager Ericka was a complete passive aggressive and disrespectful, excuse for management I have ever came across. I have never met anyone with such low regard for a potential all employee . Not sure if it was due to me being black or her having a bad day but she has serious issues . Do not recommend anyone coming here .
Be the first to ReplyMmmm ... the steak ...
Let's get some perspective. This is four star relative to other, similar fine dining establishments. The potential is there for five stars but some details would have to be worked out first. So here's the breakdown.
What we liked: The food. It was perfect. Well prepared, flavorful, inspired and yet simple. We had the prime steak and the salmon. We each had phenomenal Caesar salads. The skillet cornbread is so good that we had to restrain ourselves from ordering a second one. We liked our server, she was attentive without hovering, and spot on when it came to details.
What needs work: Presentation. The steak comes with mashed potatoes. Our reservation was for 6:30 PM, so not too early and not too late. Certainly not busy (COVID and all), so just HOW could they not have mashed potatoes prepared? Again, our server was on it, she offered a substitute side dish (did the cucumber salad, which was good), but that's a glaring error when it comes to presentation. (The potatoes arrived at the end of the meal, and they were delicious).
What we didn't like - the table where we were seated was near the fireplace and should have been nice and warm, but for some reason it was drafty. The Bay Area is experiencing UNUSUALLY cold nights this week, so we were FREEZING during our meal. We left our coats on, but were still cold.
Final thoughts, prices were high, but this is Los Altos, and the food is good, but when I do drop $165 for a meal, everything should be flawless. I would go back, and I would try other menu items ... but that steak will be calling my name for a long time.
Nice outdoor dinner
Came with 3 friends for dinner at 4:30. They only have 5 tables for outdoor dining and take no reservations . All tables were full and we had to sit in the semi outdoor bar tables for an hour to wait. While there, we had wine and a fabulous appetizer that was 1/2 guacamole and one half jalapeรฑo and cheese. At 5:40, we were seated. Service was excellent. I had the tri tip and Cesar salad. ($29) The tri tip was perfect! The Cesar salad was made from kale, corn and big corn bread croutons. It was drenched in salad dressing, way too much! Others had chicken or chicken/rib combo. Overall, very good
Be the first to ReplySurprise Caesar Salad
The cheeseburger and whipped potatoes were great. But if you order the Caesar, be forewarned that it comes with kale and not romaine, like it or not. No where on the menu does it mention kale in the Caesar. I called and talked to the manager and she just said that's how they do it and they don't list all in ingredients on the menu. Would have been a higher grade if I had known about the kale or if the manager had been a little sympathetic.
Be the first to ReplyCan't miss spot for a great dinner Los Altos
While the Los Altos Grill is part of the Hillstone restaurant chain (and with a menu that is 90% the same), this is still a favorite of ours for dinner. The food and staff are consistent in making the evening fabulous. Make sure to make a reservation, as this place fills up starting when the doors open at 5pm!
Be the first to Reply3rd Time is the charm
We have ordered the French dip as we make a habit of ordering that each time we go to a Houston's Restaurant. Our first order came out COLD (meaning the meat was Cold to the touch). The only thing hot was the bun and the au-jus. They took it back and brought another. Just above room temp. this time. Then we were told if they were to heat it it would not be rare but well done. So be it - I like food hot that is supposed to be served hot. The meat was a bit fattier than other Houston related restaurants.
The corn bread is VERY GOOD. Good thing we ordered it as it took a bit to get the French dip right.
1 French dip sandwich (split) - 1 order of corn bread - 2 wines (each) - over $100 - pricey.
Salads looked GREAT and all the locals were ordering them - wish we had - you might want to try them!
Make reservations or call ahead of your arrival
We try to patronize local restaurants when we go out, so when looking for an anniversary dinner restaurant, decided to make reservations at Los Altos Bar and Grill. We had not been there for quite a while, and when we dropped by on previous occassions, there was always a long wait, so we'd try something else on State or Main. They also serve dinner at the bar, so that is an option too.
We arrived a bit early for our 7pm reservation on a weeknight and were told our table wasn't ready yet. We waited for a few minutes -- past 7pm, and were shown to our table. While we waited we were asked if we'd been helped. So definitely helpful service.
After we were seated, we were comp'd a flute of champagne for our anniversary -- nice!
We noticed the cornbread mentioned in reviews and ordered. This was a slight disappointment -- dryer than we expected, flavor was good.
The grill items were fantastic -- cooked to perfection. It isn't smoked, so if you're looking for smoked flavor, this isn't the place. We ordered the pork chops and rib-eye.
Dessert was a lime pie with a candle.
And, we brought a bottle of wine -- there is a corkage fee.
The service was attentive and kept the table cleared.
We were happy with dinner and would return.
