Super customer service with good food and decent wine.
Super customer service. Simple but tasty menu. Reasonable (but extensive) collection - that works for me though may be short for a wine enthusiast- of wine selection. We ended up doing wine pairing. Ambience was great. Overall, a very good experience- especially with customer service as the highlight.

If you look at my history of reviews (not that I would expect this) never in my life did I think that I would be in a position to review a Michelin star restaurant. My daughter took me to lunch for Father’s Day and had figured our best experience would be to order the six course tasting menu. Each course was a work of art on a plate. Tasting dishes are small portions rich with such flavor you wanted to only take small bites to savor the dish. The pace of the meal was just right. Service was excellent in every phase. Normally I comment on the price in my reviews, but that would be ridiculous here. This was more than just a lunch, it was an experience never to forget. Thank you Skylar!

I was taken to this restaurant by a friend. The ambiance is magnificent. But from start to finish the service is probably everything that a Michelin star restaurant should not be. If I had to create a playbook of what is considered bad service, they hit every point. Reception was rather cold and cool. We got to our table and waiter was friendly but not that attentive. Every plate was put down like I was at Denny's. Explanation for each course were curt. So let's start at the beginning. We brought in our own wine so that seemed to offend the somms as none of them came over to talk about our wine, taste or even serve it. Many times during the night we had to serve ourselves, which is almost never seen at a Michelin star restaurant. We had to direct the waiter to say we would like our wine served and we would like to order. Bread was thrown on the table like we were in a ship's mess hall. The food was actually quite good and the portions were incredible large. Given the reasonable price, this is probably why they have a Michelin star in spite of its service standard. I started with the lagoustine spaghetti which was very nice. The plating was good but there were some streak to the plating which should their sloppiness and lack of care (I know this because my friend had the same dish and did not have the streaks or spot of sauce on the plate). Next I had the lamb dish. Plating was very good and food was of good quality. Finished with the cheese plate, which again was plated very well, very substantial (lots of food on the plate) and of good quality. I wouldn't say the food was exceptional but it was definitely of high quality. I cannot remember another Michelin star restaurant where I have had worse service. It was honestly non existent and atrocious even to a Bib or Michelin recommended standard. There was lot of staff around doing nothing. Not attentive at all.. never once asked us for feedback on the food. Can't recall them refilling water. Never cleaned the table even though there were wine stains and bread crumbs. I know you go to a restaurant for the food but when service is so substandard, it does affect your appreciation of the food. I would think they were given a Michelin star for their ambiance, location, the chef's reputation and the quantity of food. If they were not located in One Vanderbilt or because of Daniel Boulud name, I doubt they woudl have a star. I think I would still go back for the food but would lower my expectation for the quality of service. Really large portions for a Michelin one star restaurant so it does give value if you can ignore the service. Kinda like throwback Paris aloof service only you are in New York

World-class restaurant across the street from Grand Central Station. Daniel Boulud is one of the top chefs in New York City - probably the best chef in the city; this is a more casual version of Daniel, his place on the upper East side, with a much more open atmosphere - the bar scene offers an amazing view of the Chrysler Building. The food is updated-French - and leans to the ocean in terms of choices - and is always excellent. The wine list is also top-notch, and they have an excellent set of somelliers to guide you through it. Think of it also as a bit-more-casual competitor to Le Bernardin. I've been there maybe 10 times by now, and have always had great food and a great time. It recently retained it's Michellin Star - but it should really have two.

Our party of 4 had a very good experience. Service was excellent from check-in to wait staff. Both the food and presentation were excellent. The $145 fixed price menu was, I believe, extremely reasonable for the 3 courses. My husband and I had the spaghetti with langostino for the first course - very good. Our friends had the oysters and octopus/seafood and they also raved about the course. I had the artic char in pastery with a beurre blanc sauce - well balanced and complex flavors. I have hearing loss and was able to understand the conversation. We will return for special occasions.

Such a fantastic tasting menu. Enjoyed the spaghetti langoustine, salmon with caviar, ceviche, roasted dover sole and duck breast. The negroni and mango mezcal were great drinks. Worth a visit!

My wife and I attend the Annual Black & White Truffle Dinner, Saturday December 9th. We were very excited and had extremely high expectations. We just returned from our vacation in France and Daniel Boulud is one of our favorite chefs. Our reservation was for 5pm. We told our wait staff at the very beginning we had a theater reservation and had to leave at 7:30. They said “no problem”. The dinner courses arrived to our table and we watched other tables around us receive shaved truffles as part of their individual courses. Our waitstaff never offered or communicated to my wife and I about the shaved truffles. When we inquired we were told “the shaved truffles will be on your dessert”? We couldn’t have dessert or our last wine pairing, we ran out of time. It seems petty, but we didn’t receive the same experience the other guests received. I’m sorry, my wife and I have dined at some of the finest restaurants in the world, when you are spending $700+ per person, your dining experience should be perfect! We also missed our dessert course because we had to leave for our theater reservation. We expressed our disappointment with the GM, he offered to “take care of us” the next time we are in NYC. My wife told him “we came for the truffle dinner and our experience was unacceptable”. The GM removed one of our dinners, $495 from the check. The entire experience was extremely poor and disappointing while having such a high expectation.

Virtually a perfect evening! We were there for a prepaid, prix fix sampling menu and the ten (? We lost count) courses with wines were just unequaled in our experience. The decor, too -- livened up for Christmas -- contributed to our pleasure. Every course was delicious, and every wine perfectly complemented the food. In spite of the plethora of delights, the portions were small enough so that, until the last one (a delicious duck breast, when I ran out of gas), we could enjoy it all. What more an I say? Well. the bill was high, in keeping with everything else. If you go, just don't ask, and enjoy.

Le Pavillon is located on 1 Vanderbilt right next to Grand Central Station. It‘s on the 2nd floor of a very modern building, which translates into the upscale design of the restaurant. Owned by celebrity chef Daniel Boulud, the a la carte menu is classic French. You choose one starter, one main, and one dessert from a selection of meat, fish, and vegetarian options. Dress code is smart casual, most men wore shirts but no ties. We had expected it to be posher, and were pleasantly surprised that the style was less stiff than most traditional French restaurants. Upon arrival, we chose a cocktail to start with. However, while we were asked when to start with the food so that we could finish our cocktail first, the first (sparkling) wine from the wine pairing was served shortly after the cocktail - it was supposed to go with the amuse bouche, which I was unaware of, I thought that it would go with the starter. Hence I finished my cocktail and left the champagne untouched while enjoying the kitchen greeting. Bad idea, because then the 2nd wine arrived which was supposed to go with the starter. I ended up having three drinks on the table, which should not happen in an upscale restaurant. Food was of high quality and courses well composed. For our personal taste, flavors and textures could have been more innovative - everything tasted well, but too much on the classy side for us. While an enjoyable evening, we would probably not visit again as we found other restaurants offer more value for money. Not sure if one Michelin star is justified either, especially as service had several faux-pas and was not always well aligned.

I LOVED dining experience at Le Pavillon! It's one of Daniel Boulud's latest restaurants at One Vanderbilt. Super elegant and delicious meals prepared with the most fresh and high quality ingredients, LOVED each course! Service was impeccable! Beautiful interior, very smartly designed open concept provides an excellent view of surrounding manhattan skyscrapers with window walls. Very much looking forward to the next visit!

We had high hopes for this first visit to Le Pavillon as we have had mostly good experiences at other Daniel Boulud restaurants. The room is very attractive as advertised. We were seated presented with menus, placed an order for a bottle of wine and food. Then things started to fall apart a bit. You expect a very high level of attentive high touch service in a restaurant like this but that was not the case. People either had more tables than they could handle or were just not properly trained or experienced for this kind of setting. The hostess came over and acted as sommelier and took our wine order. The bottle of wine did not come for awhile and before it did our first courses arrived. We asked for them to be taken back and served after we had our wine. The hostess/sommelier then served the wine but had opened it at the nearby service area…no big deal but not what happens in fine dining restaurants serving the majority of wines here over $100 per bottle. Our waiter then came over and apologized about the apps showing up early and said they were “refiring” them up. My wife’s onion tart seemed to be just reheated or under a heat lamp when it did come out. I had grilled octopus that had some pieces of something that looked like food gras…when the hostess came to clear our plates I asked what it was. She said pork shoulder. I said I did not get to try it because all 4 pieces were so tough I could not cut into any of them. She really had no reaction to this or that my wife had left most of her appetizer uneaten on the plate. Both appetizers/first courses were mediocre. Next we both had rotisserie chicken salads for a main course. They were ok. Daniel Boulud happened to be there and began to make some rounds of the dining room. Perhaps he knows he has some rough edges hurdles to overcome in this place. Overall for a $78 2 course luncheon just did not leave with a good impression of this place, especially for a Boulud establishment. Perhaps it was comparing it to meals on the previous 3 days at Le Bernadin and La Grenouille that are just on another planet compared to Le Pavillon. If this restaurant was a couple of months old you could sort of understand it but it’s not. There are just too many other great options in NYC to opt for Le Pavillon.

My youngest son, Kevin, was in town last month and he wanted to visit Le Pavillion. Currently, he works in the kitchen at Bouchon Bistro in Yountville so he wanted to try a Daniel Boulud restaurant. Needless to say, we were blown away by the experience from the venue, to the service, and the incredible food. We were so impressed that you could open this restaurant during Covid and deliver at such a high standard. We had the chance to visit the kitchen and Kevin was salivating at the size of the workspace (the things you notice when in the business). We can't wait to return as I fully believe that more stars are in the future. Great work! Sincerely, Doug Jordan

This was a new restaurant for us and is now at the top of the list. Every coarse was delicious and beautifully presented. The foie gras was one of the best dishes. The wait staff was excellent and the restaurant is full of natural light. Great experience!

We went to the restaurant for our anniversary. The atmosphere and design is stunning but as a French person, I was disappointed by the food that was just ok and not a the level I would have expected for a one Michelin star restaurant which costed us 500 dollars…

Although we had dined at most of the other Daniel Boulud restaurants, one never knows what a new establishment will bring. At Le Pavillon, the staff were cheerful, helpful, and attentive from the moment we entered, without being overbearing. Cocktails were excellent, menu offerings and the food itself were truly outstanding, and the wine list was impressive. The cost is a bit sobering, but this is a very special and rewarding experience.

Sensational Christmas Dinner. Amazing and tasteful food, excellent service, beautiful restaurant. We went there for Christmas Set menu and had great evening. The food was delicious, the service was friendly and efficient, the wine list its huge and really well selected wines inside...overall great evening. Looking forward for our next visit.

Le Pavilion is one of Daniel Boulards many restaurants in the New York area. It is located at One Vanderbilt which is directly next to Grand Central Station. Interestingly the main entrance is right across from the entrance to the Campbell Apartments which has an old art deco bar that we have been to many times and we visited last night and it is the same as it's been since the 1920s. We were warmly greeted on arrival and throughout the evening staff was professional accommodating friendly and helpful. Overall the food was excellent there were some exceptional dishes one of which I had probably the best Epoisse cheese sauce I've ever had in my life it could not have been made more perfectly and tasty. I could not refuse shaved white truffles on Dover Sole. The wine list was extensive with plenty of great wines including cult ones to experience but be aware the prices or 300% retail so very expensive though I was able to find a reasonable White Burgundy that satisfied our taste buds for the evening. Overall the dinner was elegant and expertly prepared the chef was able to accommodate special requests and in general we thought we received value for our dinner understanding of course that this restaurant is an expensive evening out but it is also in line with what you would expect in New York City from a top shelf restaurant.

second time earring at this restaurant so got to try more dishes. it really is perfect. One of the best restaurants I have eaten in. Service and food is wonderful. It is expensive, especially if you come from the UK with the poor exchange rate. For 2 people, with two cocktails it cost about £380.

We had dinner at Le Pavillon on Saturday night. It was a spectacular experience. The restaurant is located adjacent to Grand Central Station on Vanderbilt Square, which is a plaza with a large new high rise building. Find the square and you have found the restaurant. It has an entrance off the Square, with a private elevator taking you up a floor. The restaurant is breathtaking. There is a bar at each end. Restaurant seating is in the middle. There is a pathway between the two bar areas along one side of the dining area. The pathway is lined with full sized olive trees imported from Europe. It is great. There is abundant staff. We were seated at the entrance desk. We were visited by the sommelier and served by the wine steward. There were managers visiting the table and waitstaff delivering the food. The staff delivered and the manager explained each dish in detail. When you visit Le Pavillon you either go the three course price fixed dinner route ($135) or the six course tasting menu route. I chose the six course menu priced at $205 and my wife chose the vegetable based six course menu at $155. As you read this, you might be saying “This sounds expensive.” I asked if they do wine pairings for the tasting menu. They do. That would add about $125/head. I am a wine fan, so I studied the large wine list. I am convinced big lists have hidden gems ready to be discovered by true wine fans. I did find a French white priced at $60. We ordered it. The sommelier came by and let me know a couple of features about the wine that might not make it our first choice. He suggested one priced at $75 in it’s place. Considering the vast majority of the wines have three numbers to the left of the decimal point, this was a great “value driven” selection. It was a White Burgundy from the Macon region, a Vire-Clesse. It was an excellent choice. As an FYI, the wine steward carefully poured the bottle over s 2+ hour period, so i5 lasted through the meal. She was very good at her job. The six course menus started with a trio of Amuse Bouchée. The meal ran 2+ hours, which means we were not rushed, nor did we feel there was down t8me between courses. Although I could go through each course in detail, that would take forever to read. The tasting menus are on the restaurant’s website. Each course is explained in detail. There were standouts. The Arctic char was brought to the table on a rolling cart topped with a rectangular block of pink Himalayan sea salt, looking like a pink carving board. The fish was then topped with six grams of Kaluga caviar, which is a variety the Chinese are producing from a deep lake near the China/Russia border. It was spectacular. You might be saying “How exciting could a vegetable based tasting menu be? The standout was an egg and corn based dish with an abundant amount of black truffles shaved over the top. There were lots of truffle slices! My wife tore off small pieces of bread, put a truffle slice on top and shared them with me. What about bread? A basket was served with three types. My favorite was the triangular olive rolls. The butter came from Normandy. As you can tell, we had a great experience. There is more to tell, because there is incredible attention to detail here. I was noticing my wife’s jewelry sparkled. There are tiny pin spotlights in the ceiling making this happen. Doesn’t everyone want their jewelry to sparkle? This was a spectacular experience. Bear in mind, it is costly. Obviously you need reservations. They open the reservation book on a rolling 30 day basis. I called at 9:00 AM on June 15th to get a 7:30 PM reservation on July 15th. It was great!

We ate here to celebrate my wife's birthday and chose the vegetarian tasting menu with the wine pairing and it was exquisite! Each of the six courses were beautifully presented and simply exploding with flavor. We had a hard time deciding which we liked best. Service was impeccable and the staff is friendly too. It could not have been better in any way. Simply delicious!

Le Pavillon is almost worthy of five stars, but they have some service kinks still to work out. The atmosphere is vibrant and beautiful. The cocktails were excellent, and the wine recommended by the sommelier was delicious and perfectly paired. The food was outstanding. Each course was delicious, except perhaps for the mascarpone cheesecake, which was small and underwhelming, in comparison to the chocolate noisette, which was delicious. Now for the service. Our waiter took too long to ask whether we wished to order a cocktail. The pacing of the courses was a bit on the slow side. And the coffee we ordered was served after we had already finished our dessert (which came out of the kitchen within minutes of ordering it…odd, considering the appetizers and main courses took a bit too long to come out, compared to standard pacing at 3-star restaurants). In general, the service was not as attentive or well-choreographed as one would expect of a restaurant that aspires to be one of NYC’s best. With that said, the evening was wonderful, and I would go back in a heartbeat.

The experience with Le Pavillon started after the reservation was made. Reminder messages arrived two day before, 6 hours before, and 30 minutes before. It is for major anniversary dinner, and from the reception to entire dinner staffs noted the occasion in interacting with us. The foods were fabulous, yet equally wonderful was the conversation with the service staff. They tell amazing stories behind each dish which make the experience much more memorable. We felt we have absolutely selected the right dishes after listening to Anthony patiently describing them, and the sommelier picked the absolutely a right bottle of burgundy that accompanied the entire meal. Each dishes come with a little bit of surprises in plating artistry and taste. This is the dining experience that can anchor any major celebration.
