Le Diplomate Washington Reviews from The Last Year
I have been here many times with friends but thought to
I have been here many times with friends but thought to being my God parents for the first time. They were a little skeptical as the menu isn't exactly easy to read and they aren't the most adventurous when it comes to their food, but you guys understood the assignment. Le Dip never disappoints but, on this visit, everyone made my godparents feel right at home. The food (burger, pork chop, truffle spaghetti, warm shrimp salad, ravioli and dessert) was great as always, but the service took it over the top. Our server Emilia was the absolute best! She was patient and explained the different menu items and even made some suggestions. Shoutout to T, the manager, who was also a delight and very sweet. We left with full bellies and warm hearts. Hands down one of my favorite restaurants in DC! Thank you Le Diplomate
Great dinner.
I will go back and I reserve the right to upgrade to 5 star. I had been here a while ago and remember the service being a little "French". Which is to say, I felt like a necessary evil of the waiter's day. This time everyone we came in contact with smiled and was genuinely helpful. Whoever is running front of house should get a high five (or bottle of Bourbon). Yes - the tables were close and too small which always ends up being a small buzz kill when the waiter shows up with food and does their jenga moves to put 2 plates on a table. The beef tartare was most excellent as was the mushroom tarte. Try at least one if not both if you can. The one star deduction is probably what I ordered more than food quality. The waiter described the green peppercorn encrusted NY strip accurately. I just didn't really believe him that someone with put that many crushed and whole peppercorns all over a steak. Seriously, i scraped off 2 tablespoons of peppercorns and probably still ate 2! The frites were first rate. I will try a different entree next time.
Consistently good French food.
Prob the best quiche I've ever had. Baguette is fresh and very good as were my oysters and duck.
A Washington DC institution.
It's solid, really good. But unfortunately it's also a victim of its own reputation and cost. It's known as one of the best food spots in DC, and many people's favorite. District hotshots are often spotted here and out-of-towners will flock to Le Diplomate for dinner if they can get in. All this despite how pricey a meal here can be. Knowing all this, you'd think it'd be a ground breaking meal. And it's really good. It just isn't anything transcendent or deserving of that reputation. If you keep that in mind, and don't mind the cost, you'll have an enjoyable meal. I really like the bread.
We had a fantastic experienceat Le diplomat.
Charlie, the manager was outstanding and a wonderful guy and really took exceptional care of us both nights first at Pastis and then at the diplomat. I highly recommend everything on the menu and the bar is great to hang out in.
I was really surprised after reading all the rave reviews
I was really surprised after reading all the rave reviews for this place with the service and food we received. We have spent several months in Paris and this had a similar atmosphere but fell short on everything else. The wait staff was lackluster and it felt more as if they had a load of customers and were running them in and out like a cafeteria. We asked the somm for advice and shared what we were ordering and he offered us a 70 dollar bottle that was lackluster. He did not seem aware of what plate we were on or what food we were having with it. Nor did he offer to decant it. It was really a bland offering that needed much air. You will get full here, but not a meal to remember. In nice weather, maybe just have an Aperol on the patio with some bread and water and leave it at that.
This is the place for French food in DC.
We held our pre engagement dinner for 14 there. They kindly accommodated our requests and made sure it was a night to remember. Our guests loved the Bouillabaisse, (the Friday special), escargot and rabbit papardelle. The only drawback was that they were unable to accommodate celiac restrictions. We were able to find a few dishes, and everyone had a wonderful evening.
The food was terrible.
The salmon was practically raw when I ordered it. There was no asterisk next to it, so I would assume it's well done. It was too difficult to get through the lentils. The red wine was too much. The person next to me also asked for a slice of my bread and then used my knife to butter her bread. I only mention what another guest did bc she clearly was some sort of regular bc the staff knew her. I've never left a dinner so hungry. Btw they saw that I barely touched my food and offered me a box, which I declined. I paid full price for the food I barely ate. Idk what happened to the service bc although I'm not a regular, it's not my first time dining there. This is even a place I've recommended to others in the past
Everything about this restaurant was lovely and I would go
Everything about this restaurant was lovely and I would go back. Highly recommend. Great seating indoor and outdoor. Food and service were great. Loved my cocktail as well.
Great ambiance.
I've never been to France but I imagine this is what a typical brasserie would sound, taste and feel like. I started with the onion soup gratineé, which was bubbling as it was delicately placed on my table. The cheese was rich, stretchy, and the soup itself hit me like a wave of oniony awesomeness. I then moved onto the main entree, which was a duck sarladaise. The duck confit was tender, and, as with most French cuisine, rich. The only thing I can really ding Le Diplómate for is the service. They seemed to have one server for the entire sidewalk table area, which resulted with me being checked on every 20 minutes or so. I'm not one to make a fuss over bad service, so DC's most renown brasserie should expect me back.
Wow! Amazing!
Wow. This was amazing! In DC for week, and of all the places we tried for the 1st time, this was the best by far. Great food, great service, just great all around. Thank you. We will be back.
Horrible Waitstaff
Rudest waitstaff I have ever experienced and I live in Boston. I don't know if they think is is French, or trying to be cute. You will receive much better food and service In Paris. The food is okay, but I have been to many lovely and lively restaurants and when the service is rude, it is over for me. The restaurant loses all cache. If I were you, I would pick somewhere else. This restaurant is not worth the sneers and rude behavior for no reason, except that you are here for a lovely meal with friends.
Outstanding
Outstanding. Every course was delicious. Flavorful and balanced. Gabriel offered perfect pairings with each course. We look forward to returning!
Amazing service and food
First of all , our waitress was incredible- she was the perfect amount of accessible/attentive without feeling pushed out the door. The receipt said her name was Gulnar? Not sure if that is correct. She was awesome. The restaurant was very crowded and she served all her tables so well. She also gave us great recommendations on wine and cheese selections. The food was just as amazing as the service. We had an assortment of cheese with almonds in honey, raspberry sauce and d an incredible assortment of homemade breads!! I had the steak frittes perfect medium rare and my mom had the scallops-such wonderful food.
Best French bistro
We came for brunch and had a great meal. Coffee was strong and dark, baguettes tasted like the ones we’ve had in France and the onion soup full of gruyere. I had an omelette which was filled with herbs & gruyere and yummy potatoes roasted and then fried. My husband had eggs Benedict with poached eggs and ham. All delicious and filling. Service was attentive and friendly. There was a line waiting to get in when they opened at 9:30. Reservations are a must!
Bad Food and Mediocre Service
I was very disappointed in Le Diplomate. I have never eaten there before today, and I do not plan to return. I ordered chicken paillard and only ate a small portion of it because its taste was truly horrible. I have had many chicken paillards that were delicious, but this one was served lukewarm and had a terrible topping that contained way too much lemon. I truly enjoy lemon on many foods, but the combination of an overly zealous lemon-loving chef’s handiwork and the olive tapenade on top of the chicken was too much. The salad that accompanied the chicken would have been fine, but the abundant lemon-chicken juice on the plate spoiled it. The only good part of the meal was a piece of delicious bread. I tasted my friend’s onion soup, and it was good. Finally, I ordered decaf coffee after the main course, and none appeared for a very long time even though my friend received her beverage and dessert within a reasonable time. This restaurant is over-rated! I have posted a number of reviews on TripAdvisor but never a negative review before. My experience at Le Diplomate was that bad.
Authentic French feeling a bustling and vibrant setting
Really nice place that smashed it! Everything from reception, seating, menu intro, speed of service and quality of food, made this a place I warmly recommend and will come back to. The French food and taste, maybe a tad ‘americanised’ I may say so. Just a matter of taste, all I’m saying. Suitable for all occasions, family, business and couple. Quite bustling and energetic place, so if you’re in for a quite romantic moment, this is maybe not this place.
Twice disappointed
We came here last year and did not have a great experience so we decided to give this place another try; again disappointed. We asked for a seat inside but were told the only seats available (in an empty restaurant at 5pm) were outside on the ‘heated patio’. It’s spring and it’s about 50 F with a wind that makes it feel colder. The ‘heater’ is a vent that points at your feet - so we had to wear coats throughout dinner. The food was good and the bus woman was more attentive than the waitstaff. The following night we ate at the red light pizza place nearby and ate in their actual heated patio and had a great time with better food and service. I wouldn’t waste your time here - so many other great options in DC.
Visiting Dc for a few days.
...We took a chance after seeing this a couple of nights ago when we were in the area. Soooo glad we went back! You definitely get the French vibe here! From the tables to the decor you feel like you're transported! The food is amazing! We had the crispy artichokes to start and the mayo was sooooo yummy! The bread basket was plentiful and you know it's fresh. The butter was delicious. We got the warm shrimp salad, trout almandine and the rabbit paparadelle.... Everything was superb and well cooked. Dessert - profiteroles, apple tartine and cafe au lait rounded out the meals - the profiteroles were so light and delicious and the tartine had a wonderful amount of apple. The impeccable service is the cherry on top - our waiter was so friendly and everyone assisting made the experience even better! Too often I find restaurants are lacking somewhere and this place has it all right!!!!
I don't get the hype.
. ordered the onion soup, crab cocktail, steak and frites and a chocolate pot dessert. Soup was good probably highlight of the meal and the dessert. The fries were tasty as well. The steak has so many good reviews and fell flat it was so so salty and over seasoned. Not a fan but it was a popular spot. The service at the bar was average. There's better places imo

I'm a French food snob and I have to say, I'm surprised by the rave reviews. I ordered the burger and green beans for delivery via grub hub The beans were fresh, tasty, and DRENCHED in butter (which made them tasty but didn't help the health profile). The burger was alright. Loved the pickles, could have done without the American cheese, would have liked it cooked medium (a little too pink for my liking). Fries were also just ok. Service wise, I love that they let me customize to have a bun free burger! I'd try them again but wouldn't rush back.
Great food, service and atmosphere.
Love the onion soup au gratin, warm shrimp salad, great american burger. Awesome place.

I was in DC for a conference a few weeks ago, but was luckily able to meet my friend and her husband for dinner on a Wednesday night. She'd made the reservation several weeks and advance and we were seated immediately once our entire party had arrived. The restaurant was bustling and the atmosphere was fun, warm and lively. Since I arrived before the others, I tried securing a seat at the bar while I waited, but it was standing room only. It's clearly a popular place! Once we were seated, my friends ordered some wine and we shared the Royal Seabream Crudo, while her husband had a soup. The crudo was perfect and he seemed to enjoy his appetizer. When it came time to ordering entrees, I couldn't say no to the burger and thankfully it did NOT disappoint! The fries were also perfectly cooked. My friends each had the Steak Frites which I tried and their dishes were also perfectly cooked. For dessert, we shared the Milk Chocolate Pot De Crème which was TO DIE FOR. I'm a chocoholic and felt like I'd died and gone to heaven. Overall, the service was great and the food couldn't have been better. If only I lived in DC!
Can't go wrong with a meal or drinks at Le Dip whether it's
Can't go wrong with a meal or drinks at Le Dip whether it's brunch, dinner, dessert or cocktails- everything is always lovely! My favorite is the warm shrimp salad and French toast! Folks are regularly bustling in and out of this establishment because they do a great job! The basket of bread is one of my favorites, in fact the one with cranberries is my #1! On a nice day the outdoor space is fun to sit, enjoy and also people watch. It almost feels like you're somewhere in France enjoying a meal with friends at a local cafe!

The food was really amazing, only issue was the person who brought our plates to our table making fun of my order

You can tell that this place is the real deal from how their extensive list of wines and champagnes are priced. I challenge anyone to compare with other places in DC. Well trained and ultra friendly staff. Don't miss the seafood tower!!
Having lived in France, I find this plave OVERLY OVERPRICED
Having lived in France, I find this plave OVERLY OVERPRICED and despicable for American food turned French.. Come on, this is American food, from American soil, raised in America sold at a wannabe French-inspired restaurant for a very high price. Sucker born everyday!!!! LoL
Another great meal but sorry no pics.
Tried the ratatouille egg while omelet for the first time and it was delicious!!! Joe, our server shared that recommendation with high praise. Excellent service, quick to order and check as requested. We were on a time crunch so that was perfect!
Beautiful restaurant in DC
Beautiful place in a great location. It is always super full so I suggest you reserve in advance. Breads they serve when arriving are amazing. Food was good but not amazing.
Despite a packed night, I managed to snag a seat for two at
Despite a packed night, I managed to snag a seat for two at the bustling bar of Le Diplomate. And let me tell you, it was an unforgettable experience. The Steak Frites stole the show - perfectly cooked and bursting with flavor. With every bite, I felt transported to France, thanks to the impeccable ambiance that surrounds you. The energy in the venue was electric, adding to the lively atmosphere. And to top it all off, their spiked cider is truly something special - a delightful twist on a classic drink. Whether you're craving exceptional cuisine, immersive ambiance, or just a great time, Le Diplomate delivers on all fronts.
Over priced, over rated and cold food
Food way over cooked with a burnt taste no better than any other mediocre second tier restaurant, Main Dish mashed potatoes cold. White Veal so hard was more like a crispy potato chip. Decore really rickety and uncomfortable. I would never recommend this restaurant to my business clients or friends. Only Bright spot away our server. He was great.
Very nice French bistro
Fun, vibrant restaurant. They are obviously very popular but were able to accommodate us as walk-ins. The area where we weee seated was comfortable and quiet enough for conversation. The service was prompt and friendly. The food is typical bistro fare. The steaks frites was tasty but very salty. Very pleasant French bistro
Manager needs to tone down the cologne
We have walked by Le Diplómate many times over the past few years and decided to finally give it a try. Even though we did not have a reservation, the host was able to fit us in. Our server was great and the atmosphere reminded us both of Parisian cafes. What we ordered was tasty (and a huge portion) but the big no-no in a restaurant was committed by the manager. He had apparently drenched himself in a heavy, over powering cologne before coming to work. The cologne arrived before he did and would burn our noses and change the flavor of the food every time he would walk by. Other than this, everything was great.
Used to be a restaurant; now just a scene
Le Diplomate used to be a restaurant; now it is just a scene. Though overpriced, the small portions are a relief since the food is no longer very good. Dishes arrive from the kitchen lukewarm, quickly after order – suggesting many are prepared in advance and served straight from the refrigerator or warmer towards speedy table turnover. Several of the servers seem to wish they were elsewhere. If cost is no concern and you’re not there for the food, the atmosphere remains great, with beautiful décor, a lively bar, and an energetic crowd.
Yummy cheeseburger and onion soup!
Best cheeseburger and onion soup in town. Super busy place - there was a line out the door before they even opened. Staff was great.
Best Dinner I’ve had in DC
I had a reservation for 2 at 9:00. I arrived early and ordered drinks and a starter at the bar. We ordered the Escargot, Bœuf Bourguignon and the Steak Frites. The food and the atmosphere were A+.
Excellent food, superb service, delightful atmosphere at Le Diplomate - we greatly enjoyed lunch yesterday! Thank you!
Loved it! Four of us had a wonderful lunch at Le Diplomate yesterday. Our server, Nate, was amazing. He was professional and kind. Nate elevated a superbly delicious dining experience to an even higher level! Our food was perfect. Superbly prepared and pleasantly served. Among the four of us, we enjoyed: boeuf bourguignon, branzino, the mushroom tart, a club sandwich, roasted cauliflower, haricots verts, profiteroles, and port. They were all excellent. The atmosphere at Le Diplomate was delightful. We are greatly looking forward to returning. Thank you from Lorraine.
Unprofessional hostess
Very disappointing unpleasant staff. We was waiting more than 1 hour to get our table and hostess lady even didn’t check the availability of tables . So disrespectful regarding to clients. This restaurant should definitely improve their attitude regarding their future clients.
