A Gem is Sold and Ruined
Le Comptoir has long been one of the great tables in Paris, with a line out front. There wasn't a line last night, which was surprising, but as the wildly mediocre dinner was served, we understood why. We asked our waitress what had changed. Turns out the chef sold it last summer, and is focusing on his EXCELLENT two tapas bars next door, where we had had a drink first, and were wishing we had stayed. My frisee salad was straight out of a bag, and over vinegary, and the "poached egg" was hard-boiled. My main, which I imagined to be a plate of beautiful Iberian ham, like you get in Spain, was a mountain of shredded--I mean shredded--low-grade cured ham, with two small spears of grocery-store lettuce. My husband's scallops were overcooked (I'm gonna guess microwaved.) We gave up after that. The neighbors' food also looked very unappetizing, and they were picking at it. No one around us finished their plate. And the staff was sweet, but not well trained and not terribly professional--at least, not like French waiters normally are, especially sort that had long worked there. More like college bartenders, if you see what I mean. Scratching Le Comptoir off our list, with a heavy heart. Only going to L'Avant Comptoir, next door.

Trendy, studied casual spot in Odeon. Really more a hip Canal St. Martin vibe in St. Germain. Young and vibrant. Great bistro food with a twist. Good sized portions and not too pricey. Friendly exuberant staff. Tightly packed room was warm and inviting. Spill over terrace would be great for people watching on a sunny afternoon.

The food was really delicious and quite original. The room is quirky and small with a nice convivial atmosphere. The staff were super nice and service was good. The place fills up, so go before 7pm if you want a table without a wait (we visited on a cold December evening, so dinner on the sidewalk terrace was not really an option). We had a great meal at a reasonable price and we highly recommend the Comptoir.

My wife and I went there for a dinner meal as she wanted to try their beef cheek stew. I had their fish stew and must say it is very different from the usual food choices elsewhere. The food has a homely warm feel to it giving you a sense of comfort and joy. A recommended try.
