Meh
Having just been to Spain, we were trying to get that experience here. In 2023 it delivered, in 2024 it did not. The dishes were mild without much interest and flavor. We were very disappointed from when we first visited in 2023.
Be the first to ReplyFantastic Local Restaurant
The service was excellent. Very knowledgable about each dish. We ordered about 12 of the small dishes. All were wonderfully prepared and easy to share. The timing of the dishes as they came out was wonderful. Easy to share and each offered a special flavor or twist to normal tapas style plates.

This is a wonderful tapas place! We had a lovely table in the front which was. very comfortable! The food was great: especially the fideo, the chickory salad, the deviled eggs, the anchovies! We asked for wine recommendations and were steered to reasonably priced unusual wines. The noise level was low. Service was attentive. We plan to return again!
Be the first to ReplyGood food but not worth the price
The food here is pretty good. But it's sort of pretentious-feeling and the prices are a lot higher than what the food's worth.

It's been a few years since the last time I ate here, but the food is even better than I remembered. The croquetas are a must-get and the best I've had in the States. The pulpo was sliced thinly with a melt-in-your-mouth texture, and we devoured the rest of our meal including the suckling pig bone. Prices are comparable to similar restaurants in Brooklyn and this tops most of them. In addition, the service was excellent; I even accidentally dropped a croqueta and was brought another without asking. I look forward to coming back soon.

This was one of the best meals we’ve had recently. Four of us shared eight dishes and two desserts. There wasn’t a bad bite in any of them. It’s difficult to choose a favorite dish. The anchovies with dukkah butter were amazing, as were mussels. Iberico sausage with crispy artichokes - yes! Flat beans with romesco and butter beans - yes! The croquetas, octopus, suckling pig and rice with lobster tomatoes and mushrooms were all delicious. Service was top notch. La Vara offers an interesting selection of cocktails and a limited but well-curated wine list. This is not an inexpensive restaurant, but offers great value nonetheless.
Be the first to ReplyPretentious / Inflated prices / Go elsewhere
“a restaurant that …instead of a lecture at every course” I thought of this comment by restaurant reviewer Grace Dent (The Guardian UK) after eating at La Vara which was totally pretentious and overly expensive. My friend had been to the restaurant 8 years previously was keen to see what it was like. What a change from the more neighbourly place he knew, he said. Whatever it was like in the past they now serve tiny portions which are hard to share, at inflated prices- about 25 or 30$ a plate. We had tongue of beef, octopus- frail slithers in a tomatoey sauce, some beans and other plates I can’t recall. The most laughable aspect was indeed the lecture at the delivery of each dish- especially the beans. The waitress telling us at great length, their provenance. Sure it’s nice to know, but no need for a lecture whereby they lean over the table and dominate. So pretentious and yukky. The place though was full - so maybe Broolynites have a ton more money than sense. I’d love @jayrayner1 of The Observer (UK) to review here if he’s ever this way. This small place is very much ‘up themselves’ as I described it to my US friend. None of us will be returning
Be the first to ReplyTiny portions- Unbelievably high prices!!!! NEVER AGAIN!
Restaurant is very loud- but that's not the worst-
The portions are beyond ridiculously small..- I know those are tapas, but I know what tapas are- I go to Spain nearly every year, and have eaten in a lot of Spanish restaurants in the city. Smaller than these portions, I have never seen, and neither have the other 3 people with me at the table- and the prices are outrageously high for the size of the portions. 20 to 26 plus for a tiny plate??a total of 4 mussels in a mussel dish for around 20$??????? everything is like that-
It gets to a point where no matter how good the food is, you feel like the management is actually laughing at you.....
For us 4 , we all agreed that we will never be back- They are just laughing at us!!!
Underrated! Amazing dinner!
Our night at La Vara was phenomenal! The Arroz Meloso was the highlight of the meal, but everything else was delicious, the service from Bryan was immaculate, and the atmosphere made us feel like this restaurant is a really strong operation! They also take COVID protocols seriously which is nice. I can honestly say this is one of the better restaurants in all of Brooklyn!
Be the first to ReplyExcellent!!
Exceptional! Delicious food, perfect size tapas bites. Cozy atmosphere. Delicious sangria and wine. Friendly servers. Came for my sister in laws birthday and we couldn’t have been happier! Will be back.

Interesting and varied menu. Great service. Food was excellent. Server recommended a great wine that was also not the most expensive. Outside tables.
Be the first to ReplyInteresting, delicious tapas
As noted by many others, the space is small but tastefully arranged. Reservations are essential, but in our case, some snafu prevented us from being seated for a half-hour past time. No matter; the staff sent us a dish of crispy chick peas gratis for the inconvenience, which was much appreciated. Everything that our party of four ordered was delicious, but in particular, the tuna tartare and the cochinillo were outstanding. We really enjoyed this place and recommend it. Should mention that the bartender was very well-versed with the wine selections.
Be the first to ReplyReally good but overpriced
Went to la vara for dinner and were pleased to get seated at this busy place on a friday without a reservation. Sat on the back patio, which is pleasant but small. We went for a lighter dinner and had the anchovies, torn bread and fideua. All the food was very good, flavorful and not too small given other reviews. However the wine pours were very underwhelming, felt like we were being served 1/2 a glass of wine for $15. Service was fine. Surprised to find out this place has a Michelin.
Be the first to ReplyTasty, pricey food
We decided to try this neighborhood tapas restaurant for dinner. The place was tastefully decorated, with a bar, on a charming Cobble Hill street. The menu was appealing but not extensive. We enjoyed the crispy garbanzo beans and the tasty fideua noodle dish. The fish fillet and croquet were not standouts. Service was good but not great. We liked eating here, and the place is liked by locals, but I found it hit or miss and pricey.
Be the first to ReplyA Great Brooklyn Gem
I was in Brooklyn for the Frida Kahlo exhibit at the Brooklyn Museum, and didn't want to go too far afield (i.e., Williamsburg) for dinner. A little research led me to La Vara, and it was a great choice.
The restaurant is in a residential neighborhood and is very small but comfortable enough. The service was pleasant and helpful. As a solo diner going to a tapas restaurant is a bit of a challenge. I eat solo a lot for various reasons, but it is definitely more fun to be with friends in a restaurant like this so you can share plates. But, no matter, I dove in.
The menu wasn't quite what I expected, and I was glad of it. No papas bravas, no iberico ham, etc. Heavy on Middle Eastern ingredients and flavors, nearly everything was terrific. I selected fried chickpeas (amazingly good) as a nibble to start; a cucumber/grain/yogurt dish that was one of my favorite bites of my whole 4-day trip; fried artichoke hearts with anchovy aoli; gurullos pasta (long rods of pasta that were soft like gnocchi) with browned butter and sumac, and a Galacian almond cake with drunken cherries.
My only quibbles were with the artichokes (where the outer leaves had gotten leathery), and the cake which was a little overdone. Other than that, everything was perfect. Highly recommend if you are in the area.
