simply the best!
this spot was a cut above every other italian restaurant in Vail Valley, in every way. From the service to the food, it was excellent! After introducing herself, our server asked if we had any dietary allergies. It was so nice to be asked, instead of having to remember to mention it. and...the calamari was, hands down, the best ive ever had.

Wow! What a colossal disappointment. Olive Garden would have been so much better. It was our 33rd anniversary. The lady that took our reservations was super nice. We arrived about 30 minutes before our reservation and had a nice Manhattan and glass of chardonnay in the bar. Then we were seated at a nice table in the upper room. So far, so good. Our waitress was a bit gruff, especially when she dumped our $18 pichet of wine into our glasses, but OK. Kind of like Berta on Two and a Half Men. Our calamari was good and well-seasoned. So far, so good. But then the train went off the track. My wife had the gnocchetti with sun dried tomatoes and I had the gnocchi with Bolognese sauce. Bolognese is never really deep in flavor but this was just on this side of OK. The gnocci was OK because it wasn’t too dense. The dish was a 3 out of five. However, the gnocchetti was a different matter. It was just a big bowl of glommy, sticky pasta in a salty goo of pesto-ish sauce. As stated above, Olive Garden would never serve such a heaping bowl. Home-made? When and in whose home? When we declined dessert, Berta (the waitress) seemed to take it personally. Then, then worst moment arrived. Along with our bill, Berta put down a votive candle cup (think Dollar Store), filled with little glass beads, a birthday candle, and a Party City Happy Anniversary thing onto our table. Geez! If that is what you are going to do, just don’t do anything. Cheesy doesn’t even begin to describe this. Even the people at the next table were laughing. When we have celebrated our anniversary in Vail the last six years at other restaurants, they not only served up some good food, but also some recognition that they appreciated us spending our special night (and some bucks) at their establishment. As we were leaving, the manager (?) asked if everything was fine, my wife (as she is wanted to do) let her know what a joke the meal and the anniversary thing was. Of course, no apology was forthcoming. The bottom line – there are much better restaurants in Vail, especially for the price that you will pay. If you are out for a special occasion, you can do much better that La Nonna.

The pasta is perfect. Excellent homemade soups. The specials are cooked perfectly. Whether it be halibut or veal scallopini gelato is homemade and super high delicious creamy flavor.
Be the first to ReplyVERY DISAPPOINTED
We ordered Focacia, they don’t serve bread, they were out of focaccia!!! What!!! No offer to replace the focacia Servers were efficient but so fake. Not genuine. Wine expensive and only a 5 oz pour. Most places pour 6 oz Our entrees seemed skimpy. Seems they were trying to stretch the food in the dishes. 3 potatoes on our order of veal. Alex

Wonderful restaurant! The staff is so nice and welcoming and the atmosphere is perfect. Food was phenomenal as well, so glad we found this place for dinner!
Be the first to ReplyBest Italian meal ever
What a memorable night. This was the best restaurant we have eaten at in Vail. Mira, the owner and General Manager was as lovely as the food. She greeted the guests at all the tables and made everyone feel welcome. The service was impeccable. The food was outstanding. We cannot wait to eat there again.

Great restaurant. We didn't have reservations but got a wonderful table on the patio. All the dishes and cocktails we ordered were excellent, but mushroom ravioli was excellent. The peach tart with homemade vanilla ice cream was the icing on the top.

Not your typical tourist restaurant. Outstanding food and service. Could be in NYC or LA. Front desk was awesome also
Be the first to ReplyBest meal we had in Vail.
Outstanding meal. When we called to make a reservation, they responded that they didn't have any spots but one, and that normally folks 'book a month out.' At first blush, that sounded arrogant, but once we had dinner there, we understood why. The waitress had lived in the area for some time, had excellent recommendations from the wine list down to every entree and salad. Especially delicious were the Wild Boar Tagliatelle and the Salad with beets and artichoke hearts. Patio seating was gorgeous. Expensive, but worth the experience and the quality of the food was over the top; fresh. We will be back.

Excellent (and fun) service! We were seated in the area with the kitchen and it was very warm - we have been here during the fall and it was great. It just had a hard time cooling down after it got dark so dress accordingly!
Be the first to ReplyFood and welcome amongst the best in Vail
La nonna is understated from the outside but my wife and I spent our second evening here while we stay in Vail and we have to say from a food and service perspective it’s one of the best restaurants we have visited in our two weeks here. It was always good in previous seasons but unlike a lot of other places that feel a little tired after a couple of covid years La Nonna is even better. On both visits so far we have had a super welcome from Heather, great cocktails at the bar, nice service but most importantly really good food. 100% recommended.

We have coming to this place one or two times a year for decades- first as Campo dei Fiori and for the last five years as La Nonna. The food has always been good and authentic Italian. This visit was no different, the gnocchi, tagliatelle al cinghiale, linguine and starters were all delicious. We really love the Italian centric wine list. I have two issues that caused me to change my opinion of the restaurant and will likely make this our last visit. The first is the reservation process. I was aware from past experience that reservations are only accepted by phone starting at 3 pm MST thirty days out. I called at exactly 3 pm MST thirty days out and for 15 minutes received a busy signal. When I finally managed to get through at 3:15 pm, I requested a 7 pm reservation, but was only able to secure a 5:15 pm reservation. I find it impossible to believe that a restaurant with many tables as La Nonna filled the entire restaurant in 15 minutes. Clearly there is a “back door” process to reserve tables at this restaurant. My second issue was how we felt rushed. A few minutes after we ordered cocktails, our server stopped by to take our food orders and told us the restaurant management requires that appetizers and entrees must be ordered at the same time. Our appetizers arrived the same time as our cocktails. Our wine was served before our we had finished our cocktails or the appetizers. Our entrees arrived a short time later. We had not been in the restaurant 30 minutes and all our food and beverages had been served. So much for a relaxing dining experience. It’s sad - because

Was surprised after reading this restaurant’s award history that the food was just average. The mushroom raviolis were understuffed so no flavor or texture inside. For $35 it was so disappointing. The veal Marsala’s broth had a nice flavor but could have used more mushrooms, etc and the veal was not the finest quality. Having been spoiled by true homemade Italian cooking, and fortunate to have eaten in many great Italian restaurants, I may be more critical than most.

We were bummed we couldn’t get a reservation at La Nonna. However, locals had advised us to show up at 4:45pm to get a bar seat. So, that is what we did. We were first in line! We were fortunate that a reservation had cancelled so we got to sit in the dining room which was so warm and comfy. Our waiter Jason was great! We had incredible pasta (the mushroom ravioli with truffle oil was to die for!). All the pastas are homemade! We are so glad we got to dine at this great restaurant. We will be back the next time we are in town!
Be the first to ReplyChef argued with customer about food
We’ve been many times over the years and always love the food. We went last night with our friends and as usual the food was great EXCEPT one of our friend ordered the pork chop med-rare and it came out med in parts and med-well in others. He nicely asked the server to bring another chop. A minute later, the chef comes out with the plate and starts arguing with him as to how it was cooked and wouldn’t back down. I saw the chop and it WAS overcooked as ordered and the chef was completely out of line. As we have circulated this around town it seems this chef has a rep for this sort of thing. Is the chef’s rudeness worth the good food? I think NOT as there are plenty of alternatives in and around Vail.
Be the first to ReplyPasta is worth coming for but keep your sense of humor
This is a consistent place and we have had similar experiences as other reviewers. Come with a sense of humor. You'll start downstairs at the coat check. The woman working the check this year was more aggressive than last year: when we said we wished to keep our jackets she warned us that putting them on our chair backs would not be permitted because it interfered with staff. If that actually had been the case, we would have brought our jackets back but the reality was that our table backed up to another table and the people sitting at both had just enough room to have our backs to each other without issue: _no_ server was getting through between our tables so it was a non-issue that our jackets were there. Once you've navigated past her you'll head upstairs to the host stand. It has been our experience that they (there always seems to be two people there) will both be on the phone and unable to even indicate they see you in front of them for at least a minute. Don't worry: they'll get to you when they are ready. Be sure to have a reservation. Finally, once you are seated service is usually pretty prompt and the food is good. Cocktails were great (as always) and the wine list was reasonable: we had a delicious barolo for a not unreasonable price. Pasta dishes are big so come hungry, share, or plan on leftovers (if you want to avoid wasting food). We appreciated that our server let us know that one of the appetizers we ordered only had 4 pieces and, since we were a group of 6, did we want to add two more (not asking us to double our order but just to add half of one). Every one loved the pasta; only one of us avoided leftovers.
Be the first to ReplyExcellent Italian - Average Service
The pastas were excellent. Portion on fish of the day (Grouper) was tiny < 4oz. Boar Ragu and Pappardelle were the highlights for our group.

Absolutely incredible food in a very charming setting. Cocktails are hand crafted and delicious. We would have happily eaten here multiple days in a row if our schedule would have permitted it. Highly recommend!

This restaurant was generally very highly recommended by out hotel’s front desk. We went on a weeknight and didn’t think we’d have an issue getting a table. The hostess was very snooty and advised there were only inside tables and to come back in an hour if want to sit outside. We were offered an inside table. We took the inside and five minutes later saw the outside open up. Things happen but her attitude was not appreciated. The food though was Ok. Pastas were over cooked (mushy not al dente) and sauces (i had bolognese) after the table next door said not to get meatball since Im from NYC. Again was OK. Wife got zucchini linguine dish and tasted OK. Made friends with couple at next table they had similar feelings that food was Ok. Wine list was good. Prices were high but we were in Vail so expected. Restaurant was attractive and very busy for a weeknight. In summary if used to really good Italian food this may place may not live up to the recommendations but its a nice setting and the service (not hostess) were very accommodating.
