A taste of Oaxaca in the BX
Because of the owners' involvement and activism surrounding immigration/politics - plus some of the articles that I had read about La Morada's authentic Oaxacan cuisine - this restaurant had been bookmarked in my queue for quite some time. In searching for the perfect location for my Mexican Meetup group's December outing, this was the first venue that came to mind.
Conveniently located about a five minute walk from the 6 train, La Morada offers its customers a full service meal served in a clean, relatively spacious, and bright environment. And, while I didn't find the service to be overly friendly or hospitable, it was cordial enough and very well paced.
As a (somewhat pricey) addition to the delightful squeeze bottle trio filled with salsa rojo, salsa verde, and crema, I ordered a $10 cup of the unique vegan white mole to sample (using crispy tortilla chips as my vessel). Undeniably voluptuous and creamy, I preferred the thick, warm sauce blended with the other salsas versus enjoying it on its own.
While the albondigas (meatballs) lunch special rendered drier beef than I had hoped, the balls were served within a shallow pool of a delicious tomato-based salsa that I sopped up using the accompanying homemade, warm corn tortillas.
For me, the unequivocal star of the show was the chile relleno platter, which was accompanied by homemade corn tortillas (for taco and burrito-making purposes!). Do not miss this stick-to-your-ribs vegetarian entree (cheese-stuffed green chile that is breaded and fried and smothered with a chunky red salsa) that is plated with creamy black beans and saffron rice.
Wonderful Oaxaquena in the Bronx
What an inviting place. Family run and all so fresh. They have many Mole lunch specials plus an decent assortment of seafood, steak, pork and vegetarian concoctions. It has an authentic “you’re in Mexico” decor and feel. Patrons generally “hipsters” so you know it’s a destination place.

I recently had a delightful visit to La Morada on Willis Avenue. From the moment I was greeted, I felt like I was visiting a good friend's home. The atmosphere was great. Am a huge fan of Oaxaca cuisine and learned about Natalie's restaurant nearby. The menu was broad and food was delicious! Enjoyed fresh Tamales followed by Chicken Enchiladas and Mole Negro. I'll be back for sure with friends soon. A jem...

Homey and welcoming family-operated restaurant. Delicious honest home-style food. I'm definitely coming back.
Be the first to ReplyInformal Mexican in the South Bronx
We had heard and read about this small, family-run, authentic Mexican restaurant in the Bronx, and we decided to take a drive and try it. Perhaps our expectations were too high, based on the reviews we had seen, but it did not seem anything so special. The place is VERY informal while welcoming, they don't take reservations, the friendly service makes it a pleasant visit. We tried different plates, both appetizers and mains, and they were ok, nothing extraordinary. The bill for the four of us was around $100 (no drinks, they don't serve alcoholic beverages), no complaint about that. Overall, while it was good to see that restaurant in the area, I don't consider it worth driving there on purpose when you have the whole of NYC to choose from.

Just when you thought there was no restaurant at all in the Bronx worthy of going to, I stumble on to this place. La Morada isn't only good for the Bronx, it's an exceptional place that rivals the finest restaurants I've been to in Mexico. It's unbelievably perfect! Absolutely delicious. The cooking and hospitality at La Morada passed my "shiver" test - meaning that when I eat food that's so impossibly out of this world, I shiver from the inside and go into a trance. The food, the people who work here, the smells, the colors and tastes are all overwhelming. I can't believe it took me so long to find out about this place and can't wait to go back! There's no need to recommend any dishes because they're all exquisite. I went with three other people and we couldn't believe how good everything tasted and was prepared; plate after plate of mouthwatering flavors. And the people that work here are magical and charming. I love La Morada! I simply LOVE IT! Thank you for what you bring to the Bronx. Sensational!
Be the first to ReplyA Little Purple Place in the South Bronx
We were there for the first time recently after having read the review by an auspicious New York publication. We learned that it was "excellent," "authentic Oaxacan," and offered a "rainbow of moles. (mō-layz). As my mother would say: "So, what could be bad?"
Absolutely nothing. Everything was excellent and the place was packed on at midday on a Saturday.
The terrific, authentic food served in a warm, friendly, family-owned setting. Everything was created and served with pride! The mole pablano was most delicious, the molcajete, a kind of hot-pot melange of meats and veggies, served in an iron, footed pot, was excellent. Plates of food passed our table and each one was a masterpiece.
It is a noisy, family-oriented, upbeat place. There is a lending library in the back and it contributes to the community atmosphere, embracing the tourist-visitors.
Excellent, prideful service.
Little "Purple" Mexican Gem in the South Bronx
Love, love, love this place! We were there for the first time this past Saturday after having read the review by an auspicious New York publication:
"...the food is excellent."
"A woman from Mexico City recently swore that it was some of the best Mexican cuisine she'd had outside her home country."
"...a rainbow of moles."
Terrific, authentic food served in a warm, friendly setting. Fabulous-family owned. Everything created and served with pride! Packed on a Saturday afternoon. The best mole pablano ever. Excellent Molcajete. Plates of food passed our table and each one was a masterpiece.
Authentic Mexican Food
Very nice place with authentic mexican food,
Just like in Mexico, dishes are very fresh and the staff very nice.
The place is noisy and a bit expensive for the area, if you are in the South Bronx, do not hesitate to try La Morada anyway!
